The Cass Lady Colonels won their opening round game in the Region 7-AAAAA tournament Friday night in Cumming, GA defeating North Atlanta, 53-44. Cass saw a 14-8 first quarter lead slip away in the second quarter for a tied game at the intermission, 23-23. The Lady Colonels held a four point edge after three periods at 35-31, before outscoring North Atlanta 18-9 in the final period to pull away. Esmeralda Thomas led Cass (13-12) with 16 points. Payton Stoddard scored 12 and Jana Morning 10 for the Lady Colonels. Kyla Micheinzi scored seven points, while Jaclyn Hazelwood and Lexy Walraven added two points each. Lauren Henderson and Naya Brooks led the Lady Warriros with 22 and 10 points, respectively. The Lady Colonels play host Forsyth Central Saturday at 7pm in the next round of the region tournament.

Georgia Highlands’ softball is hosting the Border Battle tournament this weekend (Feb. 5-7) and is scheduled to play a total of five games during the three day event. Along with GHC, Shelton State (AL), Cleveland State (TN), Roane State (TN), East Georgia State, and West Georgia Tech will participate in games at Hamilton Crossing Park. The Chargers opened play Friday with a pair of losses in a doubleheader with Shelton State, losing 4-2 and 3-2. Highlands managed only a pair of hits in the opener, but led 2-1 heading into the final frame. Shelton State scored three times in the top of the seventh to come-from-behind. Rebecca Meade took the complete game pitching loss for the Chargers. She allowed four earned runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out ten. In Game 2, GHC led 1-0 after one inning and 2-1 after three innings, before yielding single runs in the fourth and seventh frames. Brianna Fickes had a pair of hits and two RBI to lead the Chargers’ offense. Madison Gianfala, Ashley Jordan, and Kaleigh Mobley also had hits. Natalie Pederson suffered the loss in the pitching circle. She allowed a pair of earned runs on eight hits and four walks in a complete game performance. She struck out four. Georgia Highlands (0-2) plays Cleveland State Saturday at 3pm and has a doubleheader against Roane State Sunday at 11am.

Georgia Highlands took a three run lead after two innings, added another run in the fifth and then held on for an opening day 4-3 win over Surry (NC) CC at LakePoint Friday night. Surry scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning, a sacrifice fly by Danny Hauck in the sixth inning, and a fielder’s choice in the seventh frame, but never pulled even. Andrew Cooley led the Chargers at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance. He drove in a run and scored a run. He tripled in the second inning and added singles in the fourth and sixth frames. Brandon Bell, Brandon Etheridge, and Devin Bilardello each had two hits for GHC. Daniel Gooden drove in a run with a hit and Zach McCrum drove home a run with a sacrifice fly. Bryan Quillens recorded the pitching victory. He yielded one run on four hits and a pair of walks in four innings of work. He struck out four. Tanner Thomson, Sam Sowerbrower, and Will Griffin all worked in relief for the Chargers. Griffin was credited with a save. The two teams are back on the diamond at LakePoint Saturday for a double header scheduled for 1 p.m. The four game series wraps up Sunday with a single game at noon.

A big weekend of Georgia High School Association state championship events get started or continue for local swimmers and wrestlers this weekend. The GHSA Swimming and Diving Championship began Thursday at Georgia Tech and will continue through Saturday's swimming state finals. Adairsville freshman, Rylee Moss, headlines a group of local qualifers in various events. Heading into the state meet for Class AAAAA-A, Moss has top eight qualifying times in both the 100 yard backstroke and the 100 yard butterfly. The Tigers' Dylan Smith -- a junior -- also qualified for the state meet in the backstroke and butterfly, along with Adairsville's 200 yard and 400 yard freestyle relay team of Smith, Jake Eberly, Johnathon Wilkes, and Daniel Sullivan. The Woodland girls' 200 yard freestyle relay team comprised of seniors Ashlyn Smith, Caliope Miron, junior Kera Lawhon, and sophomore Maddi Tuplin will also be competing at Georgia Tech. ​​ Cartersville junior, Georgia Rutledge, will represent the Lady Canes in the 100 yard freestyle. The GHSA traditional format wrestling state sectionals also take place this weekend at various locations. Each classification has two sectionals. Competitors are vying for top eight individual finishes in the sectionals to advance to the 16-man, state championship bracket at Gwinnett Arena February 11-14. Adairsville will be represented in seven different weight classes at the Class AAA sectional hosted Friday and Saturday by Calhoun High School. Daelen Harrison (160 pounds) and Henry Pabst (170) won area titles last weekend for the Tigers. Salvador Grimaldo (106), Nic Jackson (132), Kyle Cain (138), Bryce Burgess (152), and Nick Fuller (195) also earned spots at the state sectional. Cartersville will send Robbie Earick (126) and Jonathan De La Cruz (220) to the Class AAAA sectional hosted by Gilmer High School. In Class AAAAA, Woodland was state duals runner up and area champs in both duals and traditional. They were closely trailed by Cass who was runner up to Woodland in both area tournaments and placed third at the Class AAAAA state duals. Cass advanced wrestlers in twelve of fourteen weight classes and had fifth place finishes (alternates) in the other two divisions. Woodland had wrestlers to earn sectional spots in all fourteen weight classes. Both teams will compete in the Class AAAAA sectional hosted by Lanier High School. For the Colonels, Chance Scrutchins (182), Tripp Breeden (195), and Seven Richards (285) won area titles last week. Devin Garrett, Tyler Pilcher, Cody Mauldin, Jordan Mitchell, Hunter Quinn, Jaylen Callahan, Khalil Farmer, C.J. McKnight, and Houston Jones all qualified. Woodland's area champs were Kyle Gollhofer (106), Jahvar Lewis (120), Dawson Woods (126), Logan Sims (132), Cody Cochran (152), and Hunter Hardin (220). The Wildcats also send Jesus Montero, Kyle Veley, Spencer Cooper, Joseph Jones, Jacob Frye, Raekwan Hicks, Brett Shedd, and Dalton May.

DALTON GIRLS 51, WOODLAND 42 Gabby Bradley scored 18 points to lead Woodland and Eryikah Pender dropped in 14 points, but the Lady Wildcats lost their regular season finale’ at Dalton by nine. Aubrey Young led the Lady Catamounts with 17 points. Woodland is scheduled to play Cambridge in the region tournament at Forsyth Central on Friday at 4 p.m. DALTON BOYS 59, WOODLAND 43 Woodland led 26-20 at halftime, but the Catamounts outscored the Wildcats 16-2 in the third quarter to turn the game around. With the win, Dalton (19-6 overall, 9-3 in 7AAAAA) ran its home winning streak to 30 consecutive games. Drake McCowan led Dalton with 25 points and seven rebounds, while Nick Hurt had 13 points, six boards and two assists. Jordon McKinney added seven points with 12 rebounds and dished out eight assists. Jarvis James paced Woodland (5-18, 1-11) with nine points. Woodland plays next in the Region 7AAAAA tournament at Forsyth Central. Date, time, and opponent to be determined.

TEMPLE GIRLS 40, EXCEL CHRISTIAN 31 The Excel Lady Eagles lost a tightly contested, non-region matchup with visiting Temple Tuesday night, 40-31. The Lady Tigers held leads of 18-15 at halftime and 27-26 after three quarters. Nisha Doby led Temple with 16 points as the Lady Tigers improved to 5-17 on the season. Excel was led by Whitney Harris with 11 points. Anna Lane Hattaway followed with eight points. Brighton McCollum and Rylie Boston scored four points each. Kalli Beth Scheff and Xena Enos chipped in with two points apiece. With the loss, the Lady Eagles are now 11-13 on the season and wrap up their regular season at Christian Heritage in Dalton Saturday. The game is scheduled for 6pm. TEMPLE BOYS 62, EXCEL CHRISTIAN 57 (Overtime) Excel took visiting Temple to overtime Wednesday night in a non-region matchup, but the Tigers edged the Eagles 62-57. Temple, playing without senior, 6-foot-7-inch center, Peyton Applegate, held slim leads at each of the first three quarter stops, but Excel tied the game at 49-all at the end of regulation. The Tigers led 15-13 after one quarter; 29-26 at halftime; and 38-36 after three periods. Javin Boles scored a game-high 31 points to lead Temple as they improved their season record to 19-3. Briahious McPherson scored 12 points, followed by Alvin Doby with eight, and Nick Lonas with seven points. Darius Thrower led ECA with 23 points, followed by Chris Hale and Latrel Jones with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Caleb West added three points. Joseph Cuomo and Max Rowland contributed two points each. With the loss, Excel is now 12-12 and will wrap up their regular season slate Saturday night at Christian Heritage in Dalton. The game is set for a 7:30pm tip.

For the first time in many years, all four basketball champions of the Bartow-Gordon Middle School Athletic Association finished the entire regular season and championship tournaments undefeated. On the girls’ side, Red Bud Middle School won the girls’ championship and the JV middle school girls’ title. Cartersville Middle School accomplished an identical feat in the two boys’ divisions. The Red Bud girls team finished with a 17-0 record and defeated county rival Ashworth Middle School Wednesday evening in the league championship game, 55-36. The Red Bud JV finished the year 14-0 and defeated Calhoun, 41-37, in their league title game Tuesday. Cartersville’s boys team completed a 17-0 season Wednesday night with a 56-30 win over Adairsville Middle School in the league championship game. The Cartersville JV middle school boys defeated Calhoun Tuesday night to wrap up their championship and finish with a 14-0 mark. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 84, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 56 The Canes locked up a berth in the Class AAAA state tournament Tuesday night when they downed visiting Southeast Whitfield at the Storm Center to clinch the No. 1 seed in the upcoming region tournament. Jaylon Pugh scored 20, Gabe Gridley 17, Cortney Cooley 14, Travon Davis 10, and Cade Archer seven for Cartersville. The Canes finished the regular season 18-6 overall and 12-2 in Region 7AAAA. Southeast Whitfield (9-15; 6-7) was led by Ty Pendley with a game-high 32 points. Cartersville will play next in the Region 7AAAA tournament on February 12 against an opening round tournament winner. By winning the regular season region title, the Canes receive a bye to the region tournament semifinals and are assured of a top four spot regardless of their results at the region tournament. Cartersville could secure a home state playoff game with a win on Feb. 12 and will need two wins to be the region’s No. 1 seed in the state tournament. The 7AAAA tournament will be hosted by Southeast Whitfield. SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD GIRLS 64, CARTERSVILLE 38 The Lady Canes finished the regular season 5-19 overall and 3-11 in Region 7AAAA. The Lady Raiders improved to 17-7 overall and 9-4 with their victory. EXCEL CHRISTIAN GIRLS 31, NORTH COBB CHRISTIAN 25 The Lady Eagles found their scoring punch in the final period for a comeback win over North Cobb Christian at home Tuesday night, 31-25. The victory established a new school record for wins for the girls basketball program. North Cobb Christian led 11-4 after one period and 17-8 at halftime, before Excel started their comeback. The Lady Eagles cut the deficit to 21-15 after three quarters and then outscored North Cobb Christian 16-4 in the fourth quarter to win for the 11th time this year. Brighton McCollum led Excel Christian with 10 points. She was followed by Rylie Boston with eight, Whitney Harris five, Kalli Beth Scheff four, Lindsey Mauldin two, and Anna Lane Hattaway with two points. Moriah Hidden scored eight points to lead North Cobb Christian, followed by Caroline Bohannon and Gabby Mills with six each. Excel is now 11-12 on the season and 5-4 in Region 6-A. North Cobb Christian slips to 13-8 overall and 7-2 in Region 6-A. The Lady Eagles have two games remaining on their regular season schedule. Excel hosts Temple Wednesday at 4:30pm and travels to Christian Heritage Saturday for a 6pm tip. NORTH COBB CHRISTIAN BOYS 66, EXCEL CHRISTIAN 27 Demiere Brown scored 24 points and Will Crumley added 13 as the Class A No. 1 team, North Cobb Christian, won handily at Excel Christian Tuesday night. Chris Hale led Excel with 12 points, followed by Darius Thrower with nine, Max Rowland with four, and Dylan Drew added two points. Excel is 12-11 overall and 6-3 in Region 6-A. North Cobb Christian improved to 19-3 overall and 9-0 in region play. ECA hosts Temple Wednesday at 6pm and travels to Christian Heritage in Dalton Saturday. WOODLAND BOYS 72, RIVER RIDGE 64 The Wildcats earned their first region win of the season Tuesday night at home over River Ridge, 72-64. Woodland used a strong second half effort on both ends of the floor to secure the victory. Jonathan Pritchett led the Wildcats in scoring with 21 points. Woodland is now 5-17 on the year and 1-11 in region play. The loss dropped the Knights to 8-17 overall and 3-9 in 7AAAAA. RIVER RIDGE GIRLS 38, WOODLAND 37 River Ridge led 22-11 at halftime and 28-19 after three quarters before the Lady Wildcats made their fourth quarter surge. Gabby Bradley led Woodland with 14 points. Meredith Bailey scored six for the Cats, followed by Makayla Richardson and Lyric Curtis with five each. Hayley Roberson added four. Eryikah Pender scored two and Madgie Robinson added one. Woodland falls to 5-18 on the season with the loss and remains winless in region play. The Lady Knights improved to 10-15 overall and 6-6 in Region 7AAAAA. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 58, GORDON CENTRAL 46 The Lady Tigers defeated Gordon Central for a Region 6AAA victory Tuesday night. Adairsville improved to 10-14 with the victory and 7-8 in region play. The Lady Tigers play at Murray County Friday night. GORDON CENTRAL BOYS 55, ADAIRSVILLE 49 The Adairsville boys slipped to 7-17 overall and 3-12 in Region 6AAA with a six point home loss Tuesday night to Gordon Central. The Warriors picked up only their second region win of the year and fourth overall. Adairsville travels to Murray County Friday night.

CASS GIRLS 46, CARTERSVILLE 45 Yash Bhika, Cass HS student correspondent, contributed to this report. Lady Colonels’ freshman, Payton Stoddard, made only one shot in the second half at Cartersville Monday night, but it turned out to be a game winner with only nine seconds remaining as Cass edged the Lady Canes 46-45. Cass led by 11 at halftime, but Cartersville narrowed the lead to 36-32 after three quarters. The Lady Canes’ rally continued into the fourth with Cartersville taking a late lead. Cartersville’s Kai Bolton nailed a three-point shot with 0:30 remaining to tie the game before Stoddard connected on a three-pointer for the Lady Colonels. Cass’ Jana Morning scored a game-high 17 points, followed by Stoddard with 10. Chanel Clemons totaled eight points, followed by Kyla Michienzi with five. Esmeralda Thomas added four points and Lexy Wallraven two for the Lady Colonels. Monica Matuba led three Cartersville players in double figures with 16 points. Kimora McClinic scored 11 and Madison McKinney 10 for the Lady Canes. Bolton added four points, while Genesis Burks and India Reid rounded out the scoring with two points each. The win evened the Lady Colonels’ record at 12-12 and gave them a season sweep of their county opponents. Cass will now prepare for the Region 7AAAAA tournament. Cartersville drops to 5-18 for the year and will host Southeast Whitfield Tuesday at 6pm in their final regular season and region game before the 7AAAA tournament. The Canes took control of their second meeting of the season with county rival Cass with a strong second quarter. Cass led 17-16 after one period, but Cartersville outscored the Colonels 24-5 in the second period to carry a 40-22 advantage to the halftime locker room. The Hurricanes controlled the remainder of the game, leading 59-35 after three quarters on their way to a convincing 33-point rout. Cortney Cooley led the Canes with 15 points, followed by Kobie Whitfield 13 points, Jaylon Pugh 12 points, TJ Horton and Cade Archer with eight points each. The leading scorer for the Colonels was Mike Sims with 12 points. C.J. Bennett scored nine, Ian Whittington eight, and Ed Curtis added seven. Cass, who lost to a county opponent for the first time this season, plays next in the Region 7AAAAA tournament. The Colonels have a season mark of 9-14. Cartersville (17-6) has an opportunity to clinch the Region 7AAAA top seed and a guaranteed berth in the Class AAAA state tournament with a home win Tuesday night against Southeast Whitfield.
