  • Big first inning lifts Creekview past Woodland

    Creekview sent ten batters to the plate and scored seven runs in the top of the first inning Tuesday night at Woodland. The Grizzlies then held on for a 10-5 sub-region win over the Lady Wildcats. Six hits, a pair of walks, two stolen bases and an error combined for the Grizzlies fast start. Woodland battled back with three runs in the second and third innings but Creekview matched those in the fourth and fifth frames. The Lady Wildcats closed out the scoring with a pair of runs in the sixth.   • Lady Colonels lose in 9th inning tie-breaker at Dalton

    Hannah Lee allowed only two hits in 8 and one-third innings in the circle, but the Cass lost a sub-region game at Dalton Tuesday night, 4-3. Using the international tie-breaker rule for extra innings, Dalton used a sacrifice and a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win. In extra innings,, the tie-breaker rule places the ninth batter due up that inning on second base to begin the frame. Lee struck out six and walked only one. She also allowed only one earned run. Cass (2-14 overall, 2-4 in 7-AAAAA-A) scored twice in the top of the fifth and once in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead, but Dalton tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth to send it to extra innings. Sarah Moore had two hits for the Lady Colonels. Cat White had a hit and 2 RBI. Sierrah Gani drove in the other Colonels’ run and had a hit and two walks on the night. Sarah Fox scored twice and recorded a hit. Hannah Elrod had the remaining Cass hit. The Lady Colonels travel to Woodstock to take on River Ridge Thursday at 5:45pm. They host Woodland next Tuesday (Sep 8) at 5:30pm.

  • Canes cheerleaders Wood, Castillo selected GCCA all-state

    Two Cartersville High School cheerleaders, Cameryn Wood and Sydney Castillo, were recently selected all-state cheerleaders at the Georgia Cheerleading Coaches' Association competition held August 8 at Columbus State University. The top 40 cheerleaders across the state were chosen from almost 150 nominations of cheerleader coaches. Cartersville head cheer coach Kelly Hopkins nominated the two Hurricanes. The 40 finalists presented a two-minute cheer skills routine and were interviewed. The top 16 were named all-state cheerleaders for 2015-16. The all-state cheerleading squad will be presented at the conclusion of the GHSA Cheerleading State Championships in Columbus on Nov. 14. At that time, the Georgia Cheerleader of the Year scholarship winner, the top scorer in the all-state competition, will be announced, and all scholarships will be presented.

  • Lady Eagles pound North Cobb Christian

    Excel Christian Academy softball won at North Cobb Christian Monday night, 18-3. Brighton McCollum hit a grand slam and a 3-run homer for 7 RBI to lead the Lady Eagles offensive barrage. "It was Brighton's birthday," said coach Eric Harris. "The birthday girl had a big game." Taylor Gibson earned the pitching victory in the circle. She tossed a 4-inning complete game and recorded 11 strikeouts. Gibson and McCollum each added three hit performances at the plate for ECA. Whitney Harris and Lindsay Mauldin each contributed two hits apiece. The Lady Eagles hit the diamond again Thursday at Mount Pisgah.

  • Adairsville, Woodland pick up volleyball wins

    Adairsville volleyball split four matches on Saturday (Aug. 29). The Lady Tigers defeated Pickens in straight sets, but lost to Fannin County in the morning rounds. They then defeated Pickens, but fell to Calhoun in the afternoon matches. The Lady Tigers (5-8, 1-2 in Area) were playing in the Rally at the Ridge Invitational in Blue Ridge hosted by Fannin County High School. Adairsville defeated Pickens in a pair of close games 25-21, 25-23. The loss to Fannin County was by scores of 25-9, 25-14. The Lady Tigers defeated Lumpkin County 25-23,11-25 and 15-6, but lost their tournament finale' to Calhoun. Cass volleyball lost volleyball matches this week to North Cobb Christian and Woodland on Thursday (Aug. 27) and fell to Coosa on Saturday. All three losses were in straight sets, 2-0. North Cobb Christian defeated Cass 25-6, 25-7. Woodland topped the Lady Colonels 25-23, 25-17 and Coosa defeated Cass at the Coosa Invitational at Shorter University, 25-12, 25-15. Results from the Lady Colonels’ match with LaFayette on Saturday will be updated in this article when they become available. In addition to Woodland’s victory over Cass, the Lady Cats also had a Coosa Invitational loss to North Cobb Christian 25-20, 25-14. Woodland is now 9-9 on the season.
