The Adairsville Lady Tigers’ soccer team improved to 6-0 Wednesday night with a come-from-behind, 5-3 victory over Model. Emily Collum scored three goals to ignite the Adairsville offense after Model took an early 2-0 lead. Gillian Johnson scored in the 15th minute to get the Lady Tigers on the board and narrow the Lady Blue Devils lead to 2-1. Aimee Pacheco scored Adairsville’s third goal in the 39th minute. It was assisted by Katie Lawhorn. Havyn Isaac earned the victory in goal. The Lady Tigers play at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe next Tuesday at 5:30pm

The Woodland Wildcats led 5-2 through three innings Wednesday night in a home, sub-region matchup with River Ridge, but the Knights scored seven unanswered runs over the final four innings to win, 9-5. Jacob Frye had a pair of doubles, a single, one RBI and one run scored to spark the Wildcats’ offense. Grant Robinson followed with a pair of hits and two RBI. Mitchell Taylor also collected two hits with one RBI. Brandon Allen and Adam Martin had the other Woodland hits. Cauy Williams drove in a run. The first three hitters in the Knights’ order — Nick Blubaugh, Noah Fitzgerald, and Luke Berryhill — did the bulk of the damage for River Ridge. The three combined for eight hits and five RBI. Mitchell Taylor (3.1 IP, 6H, 5R, 4ER, 1BB, 3K), Garrett Pope (2 IP, 4H, 1BB, 1K), and Rodolpho Romo (1.2 IP, 4H, 4R, 2ER, 3BB, 1K) each pitched for the Wildcats. Woodland (1-4, 0-2) looks to get at least one win in the three-game series at River Ridge (4-1, 2-0) Friday in Woodstock. First pitch for Game 3 of the sub-region series is scheduled for 5:55pm.

Steven Spell drove home the go-ahead run and totaled four RBI on the night as Cass defeated Creekview 5-4 in a sub-region matchup in 7-AAAAA-A. The Cass victory evened the series at one game each. The two teams meet again Friday at Cass. With the score knotted at 3-3 in the top of the seventh, Spell single to drive home Evan Hinton and Casey Patterson. The Grizzlies scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by #32 that scored #23 Potts, but Cass pitcher Jordan Reed got out of the inning with a fly ball to end threat and secure the one run win. Cass (2-2 overall, 1-1 in sub-region) scored three times in the top of the first after two outs. Spell drove home Casey Patterson and Reed with a single to left. Nathan Smith drove in the other run with a ground ball single to left. Reed (2 IP, 2H, 1R, 0ER, 2BB, 1K) picked up the pitching victory in relief of Hinton (5 IP, 5H, 3R, 1ER, 3BB, 3K). Spell’s two-hit, four-RBI performance led the Colonels’ offense. Nathan Smith had a hit and RBI. Bailey Campbell and Patterson had the other Cass hits. Cass hosts Creekview Friday at 5:55pm and plays Monday and Wednesday at LakePoint in Emerson. The Colonels play Norfolk Academy (VA) Monday (Mar 7) at 5:30pm and will face Ooltewah (TN) at 5:30pm on Wednesday (Mar 9).

The Canes managed more hits than Parkview Wednesday night at Richard Bell Field, but came up on the short side of the scoring as the visiting Panthers edged Cartersville, 3-2. Cartersville took an early lead in the bottom of the first on a single by Devin Warner that scored Parker Tidwell. Parkview scored twice in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead, but the Canes responded with a tying run in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Trevor Lowe reached on an infield error, moved up on a wild pitch, and eventually scored on a single by Anthony Seigler. Parkview (1-2) scored the game winning run in the top of the fifth when Will Etheridge singled home Allan Del Castillo. Panthers’ senior right hand pitcher, Corey Whitlock, picked up the win for Parkview in relief. Whitlock pitched 2 and 2/3 innings and allowed no runs. Caleb Mitchell went four innings and allowed a pair of earned runs in his start for Parkview. Mitchell struck out seven and walked two. Garrett Fowler retired the final out of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Seigler suffered the pitching loss for the Canes. The ambidextrous sophomore walked one, struck out three, and allowed only one run in three innings of work on the mound. He worked the fifth inning right-handed and the last two innings left-handed. Starter, Elliott Anderson, pitched the first four innings for Cartersville. Anderson yielded two earned runs on two hits and five walks. He struck out six Parkview batters. Warner finished with two hits and an RBI for the Canes. Seigler, Anderson, Lowe, Cole Jamieson, and Jacob Fowler had the other Cartersville hits. Cartersville (0-3) plays Coosa Saturday at 6pm at State Mutual Stadium in Rome. The Canes then face Montevarde Academy (FL) at LakePoint on March 10 (3:45pm) and play at Collins Hill Monday, March 14 in a 5:30pm start.

SMYRNA, Ga. – Former Cartersville Hurricane, now a sophomore guard with the Golden Eagles, A.J. Mosby hit a three-pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining to give Chattahoochee Tech an 81-79 win Tuesday night in the GCAA tournament quarterfinals. The back-and-forth game featured 12 ties and 22 lead changes and saw the fourth-seeded Golden Eagles come back from a 41-36 halftime deficit. After Chattahoochee Tech (22-9) took a 78-77 lead on a Trevin Steede tip-in with 43 seconds to play, Atlanta Metro countered with a lay-up with 20 seconds remaining. On the Golden Eagles’ final possession, a missed Corey Tobin three led to a scramble for the ball, which was eventually picked up by Steede and tossed to Mosby in the corner. Mosby, who finished as the game-high scorer with 29 points, rose up to hit his fourth three of the game to fend off the No. 5 seed Trailblazers. The game’s final possession ended with a deflection of the Atlanta Metro inbounds pass. Mosby, recently named to the GCAA all-conference first team for the second year in a row, was 10-of-18 from the field, 4-of-9 from three and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. He added three rebounds, four assists and two steals in just over 37 minutes played. Ryan Davis (Cartersville HS) added 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting, seven rebounds and three steals, and Keith Ray (Hillgrove HS) had 12 points and seven rebounds. Steede (Wheeler HS) contributed eight points on 3-of-5 shooting, and Tobin (Cartersville HS) had six points and three rebounds. The Golden Eagles withstood outstanding individual efforts by Carnilious Simmons (25 pts, 13 rbds, 2 blks, 2 stls) and Fred Galloway Jr. (10 pts, 18 rbds) of Atlanta Metro. The first-round meeting between Chattahoochee Tech and Atlanta Metro was the second straight, as Tuesday’s win avenges a 76-74 home loss to the Trailblazers in last year’s GCAA tourney. The Golden Eagles move on to the semifinals, where they will travel to conference No. 1 seed Georgia Highlands on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. tip in Rome. Georgia Highlands, which went undefeated in conference at 16-0 and is fresh off a 104-95 win over No. 8 seed East Georgia State, ranked the No. 2 in NJCAA Division I. The Golden Eagles have dropped the teams’ two previous meetings, 87-77 on the road and 91-85 at home.

The Cass girls soccer team battled unbeaten Dalton through regulation time and overtimes Monday night. There was even a lightning delay that extended the length of the match, but Dalton ultimately won the match on penalty kicks at Cochran Stadium. The Lady Colonels and Lady Catamounts were tied 3-3 after regulation and overtimes. Dalton took the lead in the opening minutes on a goal by Deanna Marquez assisted by Angelise Altamirano. Cass responded in the eighth minute when Kelsey Rivera found Logan Vermaas and she put one in the back of the net. Dalton’s Salma Hijar put Dalton back ahead 2-1 with a headed goal off a corner kick by Altamirano, but Cass would respond again. Morgan Delarm scored for the Lady Colonels in the 29th minute on an assist from Stephanie Robledo to tie the score, 2-2. Dalton’s third goal came off a penalty kick after Cass was whistled for a handball in the penalty box. Maria Medina scored the goal for the Lady Catamounts. Cass' Sidney Vermaas tied the game in the 72nd minute with the Lady Colonels' third goal. There were no goals in the overtime periods, so the sub-region game went to penalty kicks. Dalton missed its first two attempts. Cass converted on its first two attempts, but Dalton made three in a row while the Lady Colonels were stopped on two attempts by the Dalton keeper. The final Cass attempt sailed high over the crossbar and the Lady Catamounts had a 4-3 match victory by outscoring Cass, 3-2, on the penalty kicks. With the loss, the Lady Colonels fall to 2-3-1 overall and 0-1 in sub-region play. Dalton improved to 2-0-1 and is now 1-0 in 7-AAAAA-A. Cass plays at Woodland Friday (March 4) and travels to currently unbeaten Paulding County March 9.

The Adairsville boys soccer team won a back-and-forth battle with Darlington Monday night as keeper B.J. Hardman made 16 saves in goal and Stuart Abernathy and Nick Jackson combined for five additional saves. Adairsville took an early lead only to have Darlington score a pair of goals to grab a 2-1 advantage in the battle of Tigers. Adairsville responded with a pair of unanswered goals for a 3-2 victory. Danny Carillo scored two goals for Adairsville. Jesus Garcia scored the game-winner. Chris Rodriguez contributed three assists in the contest. "The offense moved and passed the ball well," said Tigers coach Kelly Abernathy. "Gideon Perez and John Webster both had tremendous games defensively. They saved a couple of goals with their play." With the victory, Adairsville improves to 4-1 on the season. "Our defense is playing well right now and that's contributing to a lot of our success," noted Abernathy. "This is a big win for us. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going." Adairsville plays at Model Wednesday and begins play in Region 6-AAA next week, traveling to Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe Tuesday, March 8 and hosting Coahulla Creek on Thursday, March 10.

TY FOWLER — Tennessee Wesleyan College (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . made his second pitching appearance of the season Feb. 25 against Goshen College. He threw three shutout innings, yielding a pair of hits, no walks, and four strikeouts in a 3-0 victory. Fowler now has seven strikeouts for the season in four innings of work with no walks. He has not allowed an earned run and opponents are hitting only .133 against him. The 14th-ranked Bulldogs are 8-4 and play at St. Andrews University (NC) March 4-5. MICHAEL GOSS — University of North Carolina-Greensboro (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . started all four games last week as the Spartans are off to a 6-1 start. Goss went 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and four RBI against Binghamton Feb. 28. For the season, he has a .310 batting average and an on base percentage of .444 with a slugging percentage of .483. The first baseman also has 10 RBI and has scored eight runs in 29 at bats. UNCG plays at N.C. State March 1 and will host Army in a three-game series March 4-6. ROBERT HARRIS — Troy University (Jr., Adairsville HS) . . . made a pair of relief appearances last week. He threw two shutout innings in a 2-1 win over Alabama-Birmingham Feb. 24, allowing two hits and a walk. He struck out two Blazers. Harris also worked an inning and one-third Feb. 28 in a 7-2 loss at Southeastern Louisiana, but the Trojans won two of three in the series to improve to 7-1. Harris has struck out seven in five and one-third innings pitched with a .150 batting average against and is yet to allow an earned run. BRADLEY HOOD — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., Cass HS) . . . the right hand pitcher threw one-third of an inning in a Feb. 24 win over Southern Union CC and worked an inning and two-thirds during a Feb. 27 loss to Sinclair State CC. Hood yielded his first three runs of the year against Sinclair State. He has four strikeouts and no walks with a 6.57 ERA in five appearances. CONNOR JUSTUS — Georgia Tech (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . the Jackets have started the season 7-0 and Justus leads the team with a .433 batting average as the starting shortstop. Georgia Tech swept University of Maryland-Baltimore County in a three-game series Feb. 26-28 and edged Georgia Southern in 16 innings Feb. 24. For the season, Justus has scored six runs and driven in three while his on-base percentage is .469. He carries a .956 fielding percentage. Tech hosts Georgia State March 1 and Western Carolina comes to Russ Chandler Stadium March 4-6 for a three game set. SEAN McDERMOTT — Cleveland State CC (Fr., Adairsville HS) . . . went 2-for-3 at Chattanooga State CC Feb. 27 as the Cougars lost twice. He has a .364 batting average in 33 at bats. McDermott has scored five runs and produced five RBI with a .405 on-base percentage and .424 slugging percentage. CSU went 4-1 last week and won two of three at UNG. The Cougars are now 12-3 overall and 5-1 in the Peach Belt Conference. CHRISTIAN HERITAGE 6, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 0 The youthful Excel Christian Academy baseball team has struggled to generate offense through the first three games of the season. That trend continued Monday night at LakePoint as the Eagles managed only three hits and were shutout by visiting Christian Heritage, 6-0. The Lions plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on an error and a sacrifice fly. Heritage then added two more in the top of the third via a triple that was sandwiched between a pair of errors. Single runs in the fifth and sixth frames closed out the scoring. Excel threatened in the bottom of the third. Darius Thrower walked and advanced on a Levi Blackwell single and a groundout by Trace Still, but was picked off at third to end the inning. Christian Heritage finished the night with six hits and took advantage of five ECA errors. Wyatt Karlovich had two hits for Excel to lead the offense. Joseph Cuomo (5 IP, 4H, 5R, 1ER, 2BB, 4K) suffered the pitching loss. Marco Haro (1 IP, 1H, 1ER, 2BB, 1K) and Dylan Drew (1 IP, 1H, 3K) pitched in relief for the Eagles. Excel (0-3) hosts Trion Thursday (5pm) and will play Armuchee Friday (6pm) at State Mutual Stadium in Rome. The Eagles wrap up a four-game week Saturday by hosting North Cobb Christian at 5pm. CREEKVIEW 8, CASS 1 Creekview scored eight runs in the first three innings on their way to an 8-1 victory Monday night at Cass in the first game of a three game sub-region series this week. Clemson commit, Kyle Wilkie, was 4-for-4 with three RBI to lead the visiting Grizzlies. He also scored a run and stole a base. Michael Patterson was the winning pitcher for Creekview. The Grizzlies improved to 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in Region 7-AAAAA-A. Jake Collum had two hits to lead the Colonels offense. Cass scored its only run on a sacrifice fly by Boo Reed. Bailey Collum, Steven Spell, and Evan Hinton had the other Cass hits. Cody Johnson suffered the pitching loss for Cass. He lasted just one inning, walked three, struck out one, and allowed four runs. Austin Pruett had a productive outing on the mound for the Colonels. He allowed three hits, no earned runs, walked none, and struck out five during his 2 2/3 innings of work. Cass (1-2, 0-1) travels to Creekview Wednesday for Game 2 of the series and will host the Grizzlies again on Friday.

Katie Lawhorn scored on a free kick and Mac Stephenson found the net for the Lady Tigers third goal off a corner kick by Lawhorn. With the loss, Darlington slipped to 2-2 on the season. Adairsville has now shutout three opponents on the season and will be back on the pitch Tuesday (Mar. 1) to host Model.

The Woodland Wildcats dropped the first game of their sub-region, three game series with River Ridge Monday night (Feb. 29), 15-5. The Wildcats jumped to an early lead with four runs in the top of the first, but the Knights answered with four of their own in the bottom of the inning, then added a go-ahead run in the bottom of the second inning. Hunter Reaid reached on an error to start Woodland’s first inning rally. After a walk to Brandon Allen and a double steal, an RBI double by Cauy Williams put the Wildcats on top. Adam Martin coaxed a walk and then Grant Robinson drove home two more runs with a double. Woodland tied the game 5-5 in the top of the fourth. Mitchell Taylor singled with one out and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Garrett Cornett. Following a single by Jacob Frye, Taylor scored on an error. The Knights scored seven times in the fifth and closed out the game with three more runs in the sixth. Kolby Stansel had the only other Wildcats’ hit in the fifth inning. River Ridge (3-1, 1-0 in 7-AAAAA-A) pounded out 15 hits in the contest. Woodland committed five errors. Luke Berryhill had four hits and drove in four runs to lead the Knights’ attack. Zach Cable added a three hit performance for River Ridge. Woodland (1-3, 0-1) hosts River Ridge Wednesday and plays at River Ridge Friday to wrap up the three game set.
