Several local players, led by Cartersville High School rising senior, Elliott Anderson, and Cass High School rising junior, Bailey Campbell, had key performances for their teams this past week at Perfect Game's 2015 World Wood Bat Association 17U National Championship tournament. The event is the most heavily scouted tournament of its kind in the world with hundreds of college and professional baseball scouts in attendance on a daily basis. The event is played on dozens of fields in the metro Atlanta area and across north Georgia, but is headquartered and centered at the eight-field Perfect Game South complex at LakePoint Sporting Community in Emerson. Other local high school players included Brett Gaddy (Cass), Jacob Fowler (Cartersville), Joseph Cuomo (Excel Christian), Cole Jameison (Cartersville), Sam Seaman (Adairsville), Carrington Evans (Cartersville), and Brycen Jones (Excel Christian). Paul Gamble reached base three times and pitched four shutout innings to lead Cartersville 10U Purple to a 4-0 win over Sumter County at the GRPA 10U state tournament in Savannah. Gamble walked two and struck out five in his four innings of work on the mound. Drake Carver closed out the game on the bump with two shutout innings for the locals. Cartersville Purple pulled out the win, despite managing only two hits. Gamble drew a base on balls and came around to score to give Cartersville a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Purple then used four walks, a pair of Sumter County passed balls, and a hit by Nicholas Kennedy to tally their other three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Hunter Kelly had the other Cartersville hit in the second inning. Cartersville 10U Purple now advances to face the Clayton County A’s at 6pm Friday at Paulson Park in Savannah. The winner qualifies for the state finals without a loss. The loser must win an elimination game just to reach the finals of the double elimination tournament. Meanwhile, Cartersville Gray 10U stayed alive in the same event with a pair of wins Thursday (July 9). Cartersville Gray lost its opener in the tournament Wednesday to Savannah Thunder 8-6 forcing them into the losers' bracket. They staved off elimination later Wednesday night by edging Long County 7-5. In two elimination games Thursday, Gray beat the Clayton County Orioles 11-3 and the Savannah Hot Rods 7-0. The tournament concludes on Saturday, July 11.

Bartow County forced a second championship game Wednesday night (July 8) at the Dizzy Dean 14 year old state tournament with a 9-6 win over Whitfield County. Whitfield entered the finals of the double elimination tournament unbeaten. They sent Bartow to the losers’ bracket earlier in the tournament. Bartow County and Whitfield County will square off Thursday (July 9) at 5:30 pm at Hobgood Park in Woodstock to determine the state championship. Bartow scored four times in the first inning to take an early lead, but Whitfield battled back to even the score at 6-6 going to the bottom of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Bartow’s Toby Queen started the inning with a walk one out walk. B.J. Roper followed by reaching on an error, followed by a walk to Jacob Cody to load the bases. Bryson Markley then doubled in two runs and Cody scored on a ground out to give Bartow a three run lead., 9-6. Queen pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the win on the mound in relief of starter Markley and middle reliever Connor Gallagher. Markley struck out three over three innings. Gallagher tossed one inning and struck out one. Queen struck out two in the seventh. Roper and Cody had two hits apiece and both scored twice to lead the Bartow offense. Gallagher, Markley, Austin Baker, and Parker Hardin added one hit each.

There will be one final meeting of the Reclassification Committee prior to the regularly-scheduled fall meeting of the State Executive Committee. This meeting will take place at 10 a.m., on Monday July 20, 2015 at the Thomaston-Upson County Civic Center. The purpose of the meeting is to review all reclassification proposals to date, to begin to focus on strategies for the committee as we move closer to the August 17th State Executive Committee meeting. GHSA council Alan Connell will be in attendance to guide the procedures for votes, etc., as proposals are eliminated or moved forward. The meeting is open to anyone wishing to attend. The Civic Center is located about 7/10ths of a mile east of the GHSA office just off Highway 74 (to Macon). The address is 101 Civic Center Drive.

Cartersville Purple 10U opened the 2015 Georgia Recreation and Parks Association state tournament Wednesday with a four-inning, 14-0 win over the Savannah Hot Rods. The 10 and under state tournament is being hosted by Savannah and Paulson Park. Cartersville Purple 10U scored six runs in the bottom of the first, four in the second, and four more in the third to complete the rout. Paul Gamble (1.2 IP, 2 H, 4 K) and Drake Carver (2.1 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 3 K) combined their pitching efforts to complete the four inning shutout. Cartersville’s offense out hit Savannah 14-2 in the contest. Isaac McNair-Seigler (3 RBI), Carver (double, triple, RBI), Hunter Kelly (double) , and A.J. Christina (2 RBI) had two hits each. Will Litton (triple, 2 RBI), Nicholas Kennedy (RBI), Trip Bradley (RBI), and JaKiyon Porter added the other Cartersville Purple hits. Cartersville Purple 10U plays Sumter County Thursday (July 9) at 6pm at Paulson Park in Savannah. In other action, Cartersville 10U Gray was edged by Savannah Thunder 8-6 and was scheduled to play Long County in an elimination game late Wednesday. The 10U GRPA state tournament continues in Savannah through Saturday, July 11.

The Bartow County 14 year old Dizzy Dean all stars reached a winner-take-all state championship game. Bartow survived a pair of elimination games Wednesday night with a 12-6 victory over Summerville and a victory over Whitfield County. It was the first loss in the state tournament for Whitfield County who had previously beaten Bartow. Both teams now have one loss and will meet in a final championship round game Thursday (July 9) at Hobgood Park in Woodstock. The game is scheduled for 5:30pm. Details from the first championship round game Wednesday night were not available at the publishing time of this article. Bartow Sports Zone will report on that game later. In the earlier elimination game over Summerville, Bartow scored four runs in the first inning and four more in the seventh frame to do the bulk of their damage. B. J. Roper was the starting pitcher for Bartow County. He tossed four innings, allowed four runs, and struck out three. Bryson Markley pitched the fifth and struck out a pair. Connor Gallagher tossed the sixth inning and recorded one strikeout, and Landon Ayers worked the final inning and had one strike out. Bartow was led at the plate by Austin Baker, Cody Parramore and Markley with a pair of hits each. Toby Queen, B. J. Roper, Kaleb Chance, and Gallagher each added a hit.

The Bartow County Recreation Department 10 and under girls with pitching machine all stars were three outs away from an opening round victory in the GRPA State Tournament at Effingham County on Wednesday (July 8), but were edged in the final inning.. With Bartow leading Thomasville YMCA 11-10 going to their final frame, Thomasville rallied for two runs to pull out the victory 12-11. Bartow had 20 hits in the contest. Thomasville totaled 14. For Bartow, Amaya Ford went 4-for-4 with an RBI. Alyssa Jarrett went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI. Haley Dishmon, Harley Owens (RBI), Emma Hensley (RBI), Malaney Teems, Savannah Jordan, and Kelly Young all went 2-for-4. Bartow will now play Pooler in an elimination game Thursday morning (July 9). The winner of that contest will face the winner of Washington County and Coffee County later in the day.

As we move deeper into July, the City of Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department still has plenty of summer activities continuing. The fourth summer session of Swim Lessons are available July 20-30 (2 weeks, Mon-Thur) at 5:30pm or 6:30pm. The lessons are for ages 6 month to adult and the cost is $50. A junior lifeguard training camp for ages 11-15 is July 21-31. The camp teaches everything you need to know about being a lifeguard. Red Cross CPR and first aid are included. The Bartow County 14 year old Dizzy Dean team finds itself only three wins away from the 2015 state championship, but must get there without another blemish after falling to Whitfield County Monday night, 6-2. Bartow, now 3-1 in the tournament, had previous wins over Hunter Park, Fannin County, and Summerville before the loss. Bartow managed only one hit against some strong Whitfield County pitching. Bryson Markley had a hit and scored both Bartow runs in the loss. Parker Hardin pitched the first four innings for Bartow. He struck out four and allowed a pair of runs. Toby Queen worked the final three frames on the mound. He struck out two. In a 2-0 victory over Summerville earlier in the day, Bartow took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a single by Cody Parramore that drove in Queen. Bartow County added their second run in the sixth frame when Connor Gallagher singled home Markley who had doubled earlier in the inning. Markley picked up the pitching victory with four innings on the mound. He struck out six. Gallagher pitched the final three innings for Bartow to earn a save. He recorded a pair of strikeouts. The 14 year old Bartow County Dizzy Dean all-stars return to action Wednesday (July 8). They will play the survivor of four teams playing Tuesday night. Summerville and Towns County play at 5:30 at Hobgood Park in Woodstock. Tallapoosa faces Lee County at the same time at Legion Field in Canton. The winners play again at 8pm Tuesday at Hobgood Park. That four-team survivor in the losers’ bracket meets Bartow Wednesday at 5:30pm in an elimination game. That winner faces unbeaten Whitfield County at 8pm. Whitfield can win the state title with one more win. The losers’ bracket survivor needs to defeated Whitfield twice to take the championship. An “if needed game” would be Thursday (July 9) at 5:30pm at Hobgood Park.
