Cass Middle School's wrestling team made it a clean sweep of the 2015-16 season Saturday by capturing the Bartow-Gordon Middle School Athletic Association traditional format championship. Cass had top-four finishers in 12 of 18 weight classes to finish with 262 team points. That was good for a 97-point win over second place Calhoun who captured 165 team points. Woodland placed third with 159, followed by Red Bud (145.5), Cartersville (114), Ashworth (106.5), Adairsville (87), and South Central (79.5). In addition to Saturday's BGMSAA traditional format championship, Cass Middle completed the season 23-0 in dual matches; won the Bartow County championship; the BGMSAA Duals title; and won the Georgia Middle School state championship tournament. Beginning with the 2017 high school baseball season, the Georgia High School Association will host its state baseball championships at neutral sites in Columbus and Rome. Historic Golden Park in Columbus and State Mutual Stadium in Rome will be the Georgia High School Association's two neutral site locations. Golden Park was home to the Columbus Catfish, a Tampa Bay Rays affiliate, until the minor league franchise moved away following the 2006 season. State Mutual Stadium is the current home of the Rome Braves, the Atlanta Braves' Class A affiliate. Both parks seat around 5,000 spectators. With eight different state championship series to be played, the park assignments will not be made until after the finalists are determined. The Adairsville Tigers wrestling team had seven individuals to advance to the Class AAA State Sectionals this weekend (Feb. 5-6) by placing among the top four spots at the Area 6 Traditional Championship last Saturday at Ringgold High School. Adairsville's Daelen Harrison and Henry Pabst were Area 6 champions in their respective weight classes, wrestling at 160- and 170-pounds. Tigers teammate, Salvador Grimaldo, was an Area 6 finalist in the 106-pound division. Other Adairsville wrestlers to advance include: Bryce Burgess (152-pounds, 3rd at Area), Nic Jackson (132-pounds, 4th), Kyle Cain (138-pounds, 4th), and Nick Fuller (195-pounds, 4th). Ringgold won the team Area 6 team title. Adairsville placed fifth, only one-half point behind Calhoun. The seven state sectional qualifiers for Adairsville will compete at Calhoun High School Friday and Saturday in the Class AAA- 'B' Sectional where the top eight finishers will earn a berth in the GHSA Class AAA state tournament at the Gwinnett Infinite Energy Arena Feb. 11-13.

MATTHEW SINIARD — Berry College (Sr., Cartersville HS) . . . was a member of the fourth place 800-yard freestyle relay team; member of the fifth place Berry ‘B’ 200-yard freestyle relay team; member of the sixth place Berry ‘B’ 200-yard medley relay; and placed eighth, individually, in the 200-yard freestyle as the Vikings placed third as a team hosting Birmingham Southern and Savannah College of Art & Design Jan. 22-23. TENNIS PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Cartersville, GA; Laurel Springs Academy) . . . paired up with teammate Audrey Berger at No. 2 doubles to win 6-0 as the Cardinals took an early lead over Butler (0-5). CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 51, RIDGELAND 43 Leading 19-15 heading into the second half, the Lady Canes outscored visiting Ridgeland 18-13 in the third quarter before holding on for an eight point region victory. Madison Mckinney led Cartersville with 15 points, followed by Monica Matuba with 11. Lady Canes’ coach Cindy Moore also credited Matuba with drawing a crucial charge call late in the game to help secure the win. Amaya Davis added seven points for the Lady Canes, while Addie Smith totaled six. Kai Bolton, Genesis Burks, India Reed, and London Shaw also chipped in with two points each. Destiny Irvin had a game-high 16 points for Ridgeland that included four three-pointers in the fourth quarter. Kelci Sparks scored 11 for the Lady Panthers. Balanced scoring from six different contributors and a solid defensive effort in the fourth quarter, secured a come-from-behind seven point win for ECA. Caleb West and Darius Thrower led the Eagles with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Dylan Drew scored seven points, followed by Max Rowland, Hunter Johnson, and Chris Hale with four each. Sam Kirkland added three points for the Eagles, while Joseph Cuomo scored two and Latrel Jones one. Holt Shannon had a game-high 17 points to lead Mount Paran Christian. Graham Kington added 10. All four Bartow-Gordon Middle School Athletic Association basketball championship games for the 2015-16 season will feature the top two seeds from the regular season. Each tournament followed form with the same teams that finished the regular season in first and second places, meeting for the league titles next week. The JV girls and JV boys championship games will take place Tuesday evening (Feb 2) at Calhoun Middle School. The JV girls championship on Tuesday will have top seeded Red Bud (13-0) meeting second seeded Calhoun (12-2) at 4:15pm. The JV boys title will be decided between Cartersville (13-0) and Calhoun (12-2) scheduled for a 5:30pm tip. On Wednesday (Feb. 3), the middle school girls and boys varsity league titles will be decided at Calhoun Middle School. Wednesday's girls championship will feature top seeded Red Bud (16-0) against second seeded Ashworth (12-4). Red Bud edged Cass Saturday morning in the league semifinals 24-23. Ashworth advanced Saturday with a 59-36 victory over host Calhoun. The boys championship game will include top seeded Cartersville (16-0) against second seeded Adairsville (12-4). Cartersville defeated Cass in Saturday afternoon's semifinals 54-35. Adairsville advanced to the championship game with a 40-20 win over Calhoun on Saturday. The girls title game Wednesday will tip at 4:15pm with the boys championship to follow at 5:30pm.

CARTERSVILLE BOYS 74, HERITAGE-CATOOSA 61 With their victory Friday night over Heritage, the Canes continue to cling to a half-game lead in the Region 7AAAA standings over Heritage and Northwest Whitfield. Cartersville grabbed a 15-12 first quarter lead and stretched their advantage to 33-23 at the break Friday night, then shot well in the second half to hold off the Generals 74-61. Jaylon Pugh finished with 24 points to lead the Hurricanes. Cade Archer and T.J. Horton added 10 each. The Canes improved to 15-6 overall and 11-2 in Region 7AAAA. Heritage fell to 16-6 overall and 10-2 in the region. Northwest Whitfield is also 10-2 in region games. Cartersville plays at home Saturday against Ridgeland. HERITAGE-CATOOSA GIRLS 58, CARTERSVILLE 51 The Lady Canes rallied after trailing by as many as 19 points and narrowed the deficit to only six points late in the game, but the top team in the region held off Cartersville 58-51. Madison McKinney scored 25 points for the Lady Canes. Heritage improved to 17-4 on the season and 10-2 in 7AAAA. The Lady Canes are now 4-17 overall and 2-10 in region play. Cartersville hosts Ridgeland Saturday afternoon at 1pm. DALTON GIRLS 54, CASS 49 by Yash Bhika, Cass HS student correspondent Senior night for the Lady Colonels was a close affair in what turned out to be a pair of equally matched teams. Dalton led 14-11 after one quarter, but Cass battled back to knot the score at 26-all at the intermission and the teams remained even after three quarters, 34-34. The visiting Lady Catamounts made the plays in the final period to escape with a five point region win. Esmeralda Thomas led Cass with 16 points, followed by Jana Morning with 10. Peyton Stoddard and Lexie Wallraven both finished with nine points each. Callie Smith had a game-high 18 points to lead Dalton, followed by Gabby Wright with 15 points and Bowen Land with nine. Dalton improved to 7-14 overall and 2-8 in Region 7AAAAA with the victory. The Lady Colonels fell to 11-12 overall and 3-9 in region games. The Lady Colonels honored seniors Hayley Gildersleeve, Breanna Hutchins, Lexie Wallraven and Kayla Matchen during the evening. Cass travels to Cartersville on Monday. DALTON BOYS 78, CASS 71 by Yash Bhika, Cass HS student correspondent The visiting Catamounts spoiled Senior Night for the Colonels by jumping out to a huge 35-6 lead after just one quarter. Cass rallied, but could not overcome the deficit in a seven-point home loss. Dalton led 44-20 at halftime and 56-37 after three quarters, before the Colonels exploded for 34 points of their own in the fourth quarter. The leading scorer for the Colonels was C.J. Bennett with 24 points, followed by Mike Sims with 21 points. Jake Collum scored 10 points, and Ian Whittington finished with eight points. The leading scorer for the Catamounts was Nick Hurt with 27 points, followed by Drake McCowan 19 points, and Wyatt Erwin finished with 13 points. Cass seniors Noah James, Matt Mundy, Mike Sims, Matt Ginn, and Ed Curtis were honored in ceremonies Friday night. Dalton improved to 17-5 overall and 8-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Colonels are now 9-13 overall and 3-9 in region games. Cass travels to Cartersville on Monday. EXCEL CHRISTIAN GIRLS 53, MOUNT ZION 38 The Lady Eagles won at Mount Zion Friday night behind a trio of double figure scoring performances. Rylie Boston had a game-high 16 points for Excel, followed by Whitney Harris with 14 and Xena Enos with 11 points. Anna Lane Hattaway tossed in seven points, while Brighton McCollum added four and Kalli Beth Scheff scored one. ECA hosts Mount Paran Saturday at 2:30pm MOUNT ZION BOYS 66, EXCEL CHRISTIAN 63 (Overtime) Caleb West and Darius Thrower led Excel with 16 and 13 points, respectively, but Mount Zion pulled out the overtime victory. Excel held leads of 11-8, 24-16, and 41-33 through the first three quarters, but Mount Zion outscored ECA 21-13 in the final period to send the game to overtime. Excel slipped to 11-10 overall and 5-2 in Region 6A. Mount Zion’s win brings their season mark to 11-10 overall and 5-4 in region games. ECA hosts Mount Paran Saturday at 4pm. The Cass High School basketball teams were swept in a pair of Region 7AAAAA makeup games Wednesday night at Sequoyah. The Lady Chiefs and Chiefs remained atop the sub-region A standings with their wins. SEQUOYAH GIRLS 53, CASS 15 The Lady Colonels trailed from the onset against a Sequoyah defense that made it difficult for Cass to get good looks at the basket. Sequoyah took a 14-4 lead after one quarter and stretched that lead to 32-5 at the intermission. Ayssa Cagle led the Lady Chiefs with 15 points. Kelley Hartman scored seven points. Peyton Satterfield and Lauren Hartman both added five points. Jana Morning scored four points for Cass, followed by Jaclyn Hazelwood and Esmeralda Thomas with three and two points, respectively. The Sequoyah girls remained undefeated in region play at 10-0. The Lady Chiefs improved to 19-3 overall. The loss drops the Lady Colonels’ season mark back to the .500 mark at 11-11. They are 3-8 in Region 7AAAAA. Cass hosts Dalton Friday. SEQUOYAH 69, CASS 48 The Sequoyah defense made it difficult on the visiting Colonels Wednesday night on their way to a 21-point Region 7AAAAA win. The Chiefs never trailed, leading 14-8, 35-17, and 52-25 at each of the three quarter stops. Jake Sunday led Sequoyah with 16 points. Jordan Usher added 14 points, followed by Hunter Gaddis and Mitchell Peters with 10 points each. C.J. Bennett scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Colonels, followed by Jacquez Milles eight points, Jake Collum six points, and Mike Sims finished with five points. Sequoyah improved to 9-1 in region play and 15-7 overall. The Colonels slipped to 9-12 overall and 3-8 in 7AAAAA. Cass hosts Dalton Friday.
