- Lady Tigers finish 3-3 at Model Invitational
Following a Friday night split with Rockmart and Trion, the Adairsville Lady Tigers softball team went 2-2 on Saturday at the annual Model Invitational Tournament in Rome to finish 3-3 in the season opening event. Adairsville defeated Coosa 9-0 and Rome 18-1 on Saturday, but suffered a 6-2 loss to Bleckley County and a 10-8 loss to Southeast Whitfield in their tournament finale. On Friday night, the Lady Tigers lost to Trion 8-0, but defeated Rockmart 5-3. Adairsville travels to Calhoun Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 11, 5:30pm) to open region play.
- Lady Canes open 2015 softball season Monday at Woodland
Cartersville softball opens the 2015 campaign Monday at Woodland with a lineup comprised mostly of sophomores and juniors, but coach Shannon Dietrich is pleased with the progress her team’s pitching and defense have made this summer. Key starters Michaela Crowe, Kennedy Bailey, Molly Wilson, Taylor Waits and Tara Mathis return to lead the Lady Canes in a tough region that includes Northwest Whitfield, Heritage-Catoosa, Pickens, Gilmer, Southeast Whitfield, Ridgeland, and Lafayette. - Adairsville, Woodland open softball seasons
Adairsville opened play at the Model Invitational in Rome Friday night (Aug. 7) with a 5-3 victory over Rockmart and an 8-0 loss to Trion. Adairsville scored four times in the top of the third against Rockmart to take a 5-2 lead, then held on for their season’s first win. Loren Harris struck out nine and scattered four hits over five innings of work in the circle to earn the pitching win. Seven different players had one hit each for Adairsville, including Harris, Natalie Burrow, Alyssa Hughs, Hannah Knapp, Morgan Deboard, and Havyn Isaac. In the loss to Trion, the Lady Tigers (1-1) managed only one hit by Emily Collum. Hughs took the pitching loss despite yielding only one earned run on nine hits with no walks. Adairsville committed three errors. Hughs struck out six. The Lady Tigers continue play in the Model Invitational Saturday, August 8 and will travel to Calhoun on Tuesday (Aug. 11) for a 5:30pm start. NORTHWEST WHITFIELD 4, WOODLAND 2 Woodland softball dropped a 4-2 decision to Northwest Whitfield Friday night (Aug. 7) at home in the regular season opener for both teams. Northwest scored single runs in the first two innings, but Woodland matched them with single runs in the bottom of the second and third frames. After a scoreless fourth inning, the visiting Lady Bruins scored the deciding runs on a walk and a two-run homer. Northwest’s second inning run also came on a homerun. Taylor Calhoun drove in Keri Cagle in the second for the Lady Wildcats’ first run. Kylie Knox singled and later scored on a passed ball in the third for Woodland. Lily Watson suffered the pitching loss for the ‘Cats. She allowed 3 earned runs on seven hits and five walks. Watson struck out three. Woodland (0-1) is scheduled for three games next week. The Lady Wildcats will host Cartersville Monday (Aug. 10) at 5pm before traveling to Dalton Tuesday (Aug. 11) for a 5:55pm start. Cass visits Woodland Thursday (Aug. 13) for a 7pm start.
- Woodland volleyball splits opening matches
Woodland volleyball split a pair of matches Thursday night (August 6) at Paulding County. The Lady Wildcats defeated Paulding 25-21, 19-25, 25-7 before dropping a close 25-22, 25-22 decision to Marietta. Next on the schedule for Woodland (1-1) is a home match Thursday, August 13 against Hiram and North Paulding. Matches are scheduled to begin at 5pm.
- Lady Colonels softball ready to challenge in 2015
The Cass Lady Colonels softball team returns six players with varsity experience as they open the 2015 season Monday (Aug. 10) at Cedartown, but will be looking to replace five starters lost to graduation. Cass coach Greg Hight will rely on shortstop Sierrah Gani and pitcher Hannah Lee for leadership early in the season as the Lady Colonels look forward to the return of outfielder Hope Elrod some time in September. Coach Hight identified Creekview and Dalton as the two front runners heading into 2015 sub-region play. Sequoyah, Woodland, Rome, and River Ridge will also be on the Lady Colonels' sub-region slate. Including this weekend’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, the 2015 FedExCup regular season is down to only three tournaments before the playoffs begin. Jordan Speith currently leads the standings by 1720 points over Bubba Watson, but several current and former players affiliated with Cartersville Country Club’s Scott Hamilton Golf Academy are in contention for the 2015 FedExCup title. Scott Hamilton (photo) is the Director of Golf at Cartersville Country Club and has many prominent golf professionals who are affiliated with his academy for teaching, instruction, and guidance. CURRENT FEDEXCUP STANDINGS FOR SCOTT HAMILTON GOLF ACADEMY PLAYERS 19th — Steven Bowditch 26th — Chris Kirk 44th — Harris English 45th — Russell Henley 48th — Brendon Todd 60th — Boo Weekley 133rd — Tom Gillis 208th — Jim Renner Former SH Academy player and Acworth resident, Jason Bohn, is currently 32nd in the standings. Bowditch, Henley, and Todd are active this week at Firestone. Gillis and Renner are playing this week at the Barracuda Championship in Reno, NV. The FedExCup playoffs consist of four events immediately following the PGA TOUR Season, starting with The Barclays (August 27-30), Deutsche Bank Championship (Sept. 4-7), BMW Championship (Sept. 17-20) and the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola (Sept. 24-27). The PGA TOUR regular season standings determine the top-125 players who qualify for the first event, The Barclays. Each playoff event offers 2,000 points (quadruple the PGA TOUR Season). The second event, the Deutsche Bank Championship outside Boston, will have a 100-player field. The third tournament, the BMW Championship in Chicago, will have 70 players (with no cut). The finale, the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola in Atlanta, will be comprised of only the top-30 qualifiers following the BMW Championship. Following a points reset, those players will compete for the FedExCup, with one to be crowned the FedExCup champion. Each tournament will have an $8 million purse in addition to the $35-million FedExCup bonus pool. On other tours, SH Golf Academy’s Joe Durant is currently sixth in the Charles Schwab Cup points on the PGA Champions Tour. The tour schedule and championship for the senior players continues through November 8. - Woodland's Franklin, Godfrey to lead 2015 Lady Wildcats
Woodland softball head coach Colman Roberts has high expectations for his 2015 Lady Wildcats despite the loss of seven starters from last year's team. Roberts expects returning starters Kereston Franklin and Courtney Godfrey to lead on the field and will utilize a group of four or five pitchers to replace the graduation loss of three-year starter Brooke Rogers in the circle. The Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department is now taking registration for its 2015 7-on-7 Adult Flag Football League. - Wood, Castillo to compete for Cheerleader of the Year
Two Cartersville High School cheerleaders will compete August 8 in the Georgia Cheerleader Coaches Association Cheerleader of the Year event. Cameryn Wood and Sydney Castillo have already been selected as a Top 40 Cheerleader of the Year candidate. Nearly 200 nominees competed this fall to be named to the Georgia All State Squad. Applicants are judged on scholarship application, interview, and performance. Coaches must be members of the GCCA and GACA in order to be eligible to nominate their seniors.
