- Canes, Tigers, and Colonels collect region wins
March 19, 2024 A seven-run first inning and a 13-0 lead through three innings launched the top-ranked Purple Hurricanes to a 13-3 win over Woodland Tuesday night at Richard Bell Field. Five walks, an error, and a grand slam home run by Tristan McKibben produced the Canes first inning runs. Ryan Johnson (3 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 2K) made the pitching start for Cartersville and collected the win. Dawson Bishop (1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 0H, 0BB, 1K) and Nicholas Hruby (1 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) worked one inning each for the Canes. Logan Bentley (5 BF, 5ER, 0H, 5BB) was the losing pitcher for Woodland. JD Trail (1.1 IP, 6ER, 5H, 1BB, 1K), Connor Stermer (0.2 IP, 2ER, 1H, 2BB), and Lucas Baker (2 IP, 0R, 3H, 1BB, 3K) also pitched for the Wildcats. Ayden Ray (double, two RBIs), Mason Williams, Baker, and Jake Clowers had one hit each for Woodland. McKibben had two hits including his homer. Andrew Purdy (two RBIs) also homered. Landon Cole (RBI), Cole Crawford (RBI), Charlie Rothschild (RBI), Nolan Elrod (RBI), Hayden James, and Caleb Daniel (double) added one hit for the Hurricanes. Class 5A top-ranked Cartersville improved to 14-3 overall and 4-0 in Region 7-5A. Woodland falls to 9-6 and 2-2 in region action. The series moves to Woodland on Thursday and will conclude on Friday at Cartersville. Both games are scheduled for 5:55 p.m. starts. ADAIRSVILLE 10, RIDGELAND 0 The Adairsville Tigers rattled off ten hits, got a shutout pitching performance, and finished the visiting Ridgeland Panthers 10-0 in five innings Tuesday night in Region 6-AAA baseball action. Pitcher Jack Nelson allowed no runs and only two hits to blank Ridgeland. He struck out seven of the 18 batters he faced. On offense he hit a leadoff home run in the fourth inning. The Tigers scored single runs in the first two innings followed by five in the third, two in the fourth, and one more run in the fifth inning to end the game by run rule. Peyton Bowen (double, two RBIs), Jarrett Scott (RBI), Hudson Parr, and Easton Elrod had two hits. Landon O’Neal added one hit. Adairsville (8-3, 1-0) will play at Ridgeland (9-2, 0-1) to complete the home-and-home series on Thursday at 5:55 p.m. CASS 5, DALTON 4 The Colonels held off a seventh inning threat by the Catamounts on Tuesday night at Dalton to win their Region 7-5A opener, 5-4. Cass led 4-0 in the middle of the fourth inning but the Catamounts hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth and scored two more runs in the fifth inning to cut the Colonels’ lead to 4-3. Cayden Roberts doubled home a Cass insurance run in the top of the seventh for a 5-3 lead and although he yielded a run, reliever Jacob Johnson got a fly out to center field to end a final inning threat. Hunter Lovett made the pitching start for the Colonels and went 5-⅔ innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and no walks while striking out six. Johnson (1.1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) was credited with a save. Chase Tatum had two hits for the Cass offense. Trenton Payne (RBI), Nic Wright, and Roberts (RBI) added one hit. Cass (9-6, 1-0) and Dalton (5-8, 1-3) will continue their series Wednesday back in Dalton and will play the third game on Thursday at Cass.

- Chargers start conference play with a win at home
March 19, 2024 Georgia Highlands College baseball scored seven runs in their final two frames Tuesday to overcome an 8-2 deficit in a 9-8 home conference victory over Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The visiting Stallions scored two runs in the first inning, one in the third, and five more in the sixth inning to build an early lead. A big, two-out double by Ryan Wideman drove in three runs for the Chargers in the seventh inning. In the next inning, GHC took advantage of three hits, a hit batsman, and three walks to plate four runs and grab a 9-8 advantage. Kyle Stephenson (2.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 3K) picked up the pitching win in relief. Starter Oliver Wood (5 IP, 3ER, 7H, 0BB, 4K) pitched the first five innings. Hunter Ward issued one walk but closed out a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts for a save. Six Chargers had two hits paced by Wideman with a double, a walk, and four RBIs. Grayson Godbee (double, RBI), Will Cawthon, Barrett Eldridge, and Gray Wilson (double) also had two hits. Ryan Martin (two RBIs), Luke Orfi (triple), and Ali Banks (RBI) added one hit. Former Cartersville Hurricane, Drew Rothschild, had a big homecoming for the Stallions. He went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs in ABAC’s loss. Georgia Highlands (29-2, 1-0) travels to ABAC (8-15, 0-1) to complete the four-game series with a single game on Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday.
- Canes gymnasts earn qualifying scores
March 18, 2024 The Cartersville High School Gymnastics team was outdistanced 107.35 - 82.175 this past Saturday (March 16) as they hosted North Oconee at the Cartersville Twisters facility. Cartersville sophomore Emerie Elrod placed third on floor exercise with a state qualifying score of 9.2. She was also fifth on vault with a qualifying score of 9.1. Freshman Arabella Kilgore was second on floor and qualified with a 9.3. She was third on beam with an 8.475. Senior Alyson Dunn received a qualifying score on floor, placing fourth with a 9.0. The Canes travel to the Westminster School in Atlanta on Wednesday for their next meet.

March 19, 2024 The Adairsville girls' and boys' tennis teams defeated the visiting Ridgeland Panthers Monday night in Region 6-AAA matches. The Lady Tigers won 3-2 and the Adairsville boys won 5-0. Adairsville results Girls singles Line 1-----Madison Abernathy won 6-0, 6-1 Line 2-----Sophie Hovatter lost 6-3, 4-6, 3-6 Line 3-----Camdyn Collins won 6-3, 6-1 Girls doubles Line 1-----Ella Baker/ Allison Potter lost 1-6, 4-6 Line 2-----Darby Adams/ Stella Rood won 6-3, 6-3 Boys singles Line 1-----Braden Potter won 6-0, 6-0 Line 2-----Michael Spinks won 6-0, 6-1 Line 3-----RJ Bowling won 6-0, 6-0 Boys doubles Line 1-----Braden Mathis/ Jack Baxter won 6-1, 6-1 Line 2-----Camden Teems/ Bryson Gooden won 6-0, 6-0 The Adairsville girls are now 3-0 in region matches. - Lady Tigers shutout Gilmer
March 19, 2024 The Adairsville girls soccer team blanked visiting Gilmer on Monday night, 3-0, in a non-region match. Alivia Joslin broke the scoring ice in the 37th minute off an assist from Carly Edwards to put the Lady Tigers up 1-0 at the halftime break. In the second half, Alexa Damer connected with Ella Edwards for a goal in the 77th minute to give Adairsville a 2-0 lead. Damer scored a goal of her own just about a minute later off an assist from Joslin. The Adairsville girls improved to 9-3 overall and are 3-1 in Region 6-AAA play. The Lady Tigers host Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe on Friday. GILMER 1, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 0 The visiting Bobcats defeated the Tigers 1-0 on Monday night in Tiger Valley in a non-region contest. Gilmer improved to 4-7 on the season. The Tigers (3-5-2, 2-1 Region 6-AAA) return to region action on Friday when they host Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe at 7 p.m.
- Eagles fail to hold early lead in loss at Johnson Ferry Christian Academy
March 18, 2024 The Excel Christian Academy Eagles took a 3-0 lead early on Monday at Johnson Ferry Christian, but the host Saints scored in every inning except the fourth to win 9-6. Johnson Ferry scored two runs in the bottom of the first to narrow Excel’s lead to 3-2. The Saints then took the lead in the second inning with three more runs. They extended their lead to 6-3 in the third inning with one more run. Excel scored twice in the fourth inning to make the score 6-5 but the Saints outscored the Eagles 3-1 down the stretch to secure the win. Jayden Jinks had two hits with one RBI and walked twice scoring two runs to pace the Eagles’ offense. David Jinks (double, RBI), Kamarion Profit (RBI), Jacob Jinks (RBI), Jacob Childers, and Cameron Adams added one hit. McKaden Gentry drove in one run. Jayden Winston (1.1 IP, 5ER, 2H, 5BB, 2K) made the pitching start for Excel and took the loss. Adams (4.2 IP, 4R, 1ER, 7H, 2BB, 4K) pitched the final 4-⅔ innings. Johnson Ferry improved to 4-5 on the season. ECA (2-4, 2-2) hosts Cornerstone Prep Academy on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL ZAYLAN CHANEY — Tallahassee CC (So., Cartersville resident, Legacy Academy) … scored eight points with six rebounds, one steal, and one assist in a 113-112 win Wednesday at Daytona State CC. He then finished with two points, five rebounds, three steals, two assists, and one blocked shot in a 73-68 loss last Friday at Chipola College. JA’KA’YAH DRAUGHN — Chattanooga State CC (Fr., Cartersville HS) … saw action but did not record a stat line in the Tigers’ 54-52 win district tournament win over Walters State CC last Tuesday. Chattanooga State (31-1) plays in the NJCAA National Championship Tournament that begins Tuesday, March 26 in Casper, Wyoming. The Tigers, seeded 17th, face 16-seed Cochise College in the first round. DiANTHONY HEATHCOCK — Columbia International University (Sr., Woodland HS) … scored 14 points with six rebounds and one assist on March 11 in the Rams’ 91-87 South Region semifinal loss to Paine College in the National Christian Colleges Athletic Association tournament. CIU finished the season with a 20-12 record. Heathcock started 30 games this season averaging 13.4 points and 8.4 rebounds. He led the Rams in blocked shots in his final three seasons and was second in steals. KEARA McDANIEL — Toccoa Falls College (So., Cass HS) … saw action in all three games for the Screaming Eagles at the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Division II National Championship Tournament at Crown College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. McDaniel totaled five points, seven rebounds, four assists, and one steal in wins over Great Lake Christian (78-59) and Pensacola Christian (62-51) plus the national championship game 79-70 loss to Simmons College (Ky.). McDaniel played in 25 games this season averaging 2.3 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists. Toccoa Falls finished the season with a 20-7 record. HALEY JOHNSON — Central Georgia Tech CC (So., Cass HS) … helped the Lady Titans reach the finals of their conference tournament last week with wins over Georgia Highlands and South Georgia Tech before falling to East Georgia State in the championship game. Johnson scored four points with four rebounds, three assists, and two steals vs. Georgia Highlands. She poured in 15 points with eight rebounds, four steals, and one assist against South Georgia Tech and finished with 10 points in the title game. She finished the year averaging 7.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. The Titans finished 17-15. LONDAISHA SMITH — Salem University (Jr., Cass HS) … saw action in all three games in the tournament as the Tigers won the USCAA Division 1 Small College National Championship. Salem beat Maine-Fort Kent, Bryant & Stratton (NY), and Lyon College (Ark.) to take the crown. The Tigers, an NCAA D-II independent, finished the season with a 7-24 mark. TENNIS EMILY BUSH — Young Harris College (So., Cartersville HS) … was forced to retire from her Line 2 singles match against Drury University last Tuesday in an 0-4 team loss. She split the first two sets — winning 6-1 and falling 0-6 — before retiring. In an 0-7 loss to Columbus State on Saturday, March 10, she lost her Line 1 doubles match with teammate Meghna Mallath, 2-6, and fell in her Line 2 singles match, 1-6, 1-6. YHC also lost last Wednesday to Catawba College without Bush in the lineup. The Rome girls and boys teams won the event with the Creekview girls and boys teams placing second. Top performances for Woodland: Aliya Strachan won the 100m dash with a 12.83 mark. March 16, 2024 The Woodland Wildcats scored five of their six runs across the final three innings Saturday night to win at Dalton, 6-2. The victory also secured the series win for Woodland. The Wildcats won Tuesday and Saturday on the road with the Catamounts winning the middle game of the series. Austin Daves picked up the pitching win by retiring the final eleven outs. He allowed just one, unearned run on one hit and two walks. He struck out six. Ayden Ray (2.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 5BB, 4K) made the pitching start for Woodland. Zach Lambert (0.2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB) also pitched for the Wildcats. Connor Stermer had two hits including a double and three RBIs for the Woodland offense. Mason Williams (RBI), Jonathan Ryan, Joshua Hicks, and Ray added one hit. Dalton falls to 5-7 on the season and 1-2 in Region 7-5A. Woodland (9-4, 2-1) begins a three-game region series with Cartersville on Tuesday at Richard Bell Field at 5:55 p.m. The Wildcats will host on Thursday and return to Cartersville on Friday.

March 16, 2024 The Adairsville Tigers completed a doubleheader sweep of visiting Jones County on Saturday winning the first game 10-4 and the second game 9-0. The Tigers took advantage of a seven-run, fourth inning to beat the Greyhounds in the opener. The big inning included three walks, three Adairsville hits, and two Jones County errors. Ryan Farr (2.1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 4BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win in the opener in relief of starter Dawson Craig (4 IP, 3ER, 4H, 3BB, 6K). Hudson Parr (0.2 IP) retired the final two outs to close the seventh inning. In Game 2, three Adairsville pitchers — Kaiden Coker, McCayden Hufstetler, and Jarrett Scott — shut out the Greyhounds and limited them to only three hits and four walks. The Tiger trio struck out six. Peyton Bowen led the Tigers’ offense with four hits and four RBIs in the doubleheader. Five other Adairsville hitters — Harrison Cole (RBI), Jack Nelson (double, four RBIs), Scott (double, sac fly, two RBIs), and Hayden Blalock (triple, two RBIs) had two hits. Braxton Ryan, Brody Varner, PJ Weeks, and Lucas Henry added one hit for the Tigers. Farr produced one RBI. The losses drop Jones County to 5-8 on the season. Adairsville (7-3) begins Region 6-AAA play on Tuesday at home against Ridgeland (10-0) at 5:55 p.m.
