August 27, 2024 Kylie Gentry tossed a four-inning, one-hitter while Harlee Thomason and Sydney Satterfield combined for five hits and three RBI as Cass shutout visiting Woodland on Tuesday evening, 13-0. Gentry needed only 50 pitches. She issued no walks and fanned four while earning the win in the circle.  Thomason was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Satterfield was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Braelyn Franklin (double, two RBI), Cayce Brown (two RBI), Bailey York (two RBI), KK Evans (RBI), Molli Morrow (RBI), and Darianna Sosa (double) added one hit for the Lady Colonels. CARTERSVILLE 13, DALTON 1 The Lady Canes scored nine runs in the bottom of the third inning on Tuesday evening leading to a 13-1 win in four innings. Zoie Shiflett (4 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 5K) pitched all four innings for the Hurricanes. Jordan Bishop (two home runs, four RBI) and Kennedy Crenshaw (home run, three RBI) led the Cartersville offense with two hits. Shiflett, Ansleigh Tilley (grand slam home run, four RBI), LaKaiya Banks, and Addie Burns added one hit. The loss dropped Dalton to 2-8 overall and 2-6 in Region 7-4A. Cartersville (10-2, 8-0) hosts Cass on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. RIDGELAND 15, ADAIRSVILLE 5 The Adairsville Lady Tigers produced eleven hits on Tuesday night but not enough runs in a 15-5 loss to visiting Ridgeland. Adairsville led 5-4 through three innings, but the Lady Panthers added eleven more runs to pull away over the next three innings. Three pitchers worked in the circle for the Tigers in their loss including Maddie Baggett (2.1 IP, 4ER, 6H, 1BB, 1K), Ashlyn Carlton (3 IP, 7R, 5ER, 5H, 2BB, 1K), and Jordan Clay (0.2 IP, 4ER, 6H, 1BB). Alivia Joslin, Brie Patterson (double, RBI), and Riley Mounger (RBI) had two hits for Adairsville. Lily Roberts (RBI), Ashlynn Durden (RBI), Carlton (RBI), Taylor Evans, and Ansley Powell added one hit. Ridgeland improved to 7-9 overall and 3-3 in Region 7-3A. Adairsville slipped to 9-6 overall and 2-5 in region action.  The two teams square off again Thursday at Ridgeland at 5:30 p.m.

August 26, 2024 Adairsville softball scored in all four offensive frames on Monday evening to rout visiting Southeast Whitfield, 11-1. The non-region victory for Adairsville was the Tigers’ fifth straight. Jordan Clay picked up the pitching victory for the Lady Tigers. She allowed one unearned run on one hit and two walks while striking out six. Maddie Baggett (two RBI), Ashlyn Carlton (triple), and Alivia Joslin (RBI) had two hits for Adairsville. Ansley Powell (triple, three RBI), Riley Mounger (double, RBI), and Taylor Evans added one hit. Adairsville (9-5, 2-4) returns to Region 7-3A play at home on Tuesday against Ridgeland.

August 24, 2024 The Cass Lady Colonels’ volleyball team finished 2-2 on Saturday at the Rockmart Invitational tournament. Cass had wins over Callaway (25-12, 25-14) and Gaylesville, AL (25-12, 25-7), but lost to Rockmart (18-25, 10-25) and South Paulding (21-25, 13-25). The Lady Colonels (3-5) host Hiram for a region match on Tuesday at 5 p.m. CARTERSVILLE WINS TWO OF THREE The Lady Canes (11-5) won matches on Saturday at the Calhoun Tournament over Sonoraville (25-14, 25-7) and West Forsyth (25-18, 27-25) but also dropped a three-set match with West Forsyth (21-25, 25-16, 9-15). In the win over Sonoraville, Riley Huff had seven kills and five blocks. Amara Ejieke finished with six kills. Addison Marisko had five kills and Aubree Barrett totaled 11 assists. In the win over West Forsyth, Ejieke had nine kills. Huff contributed six kills and six blocks. Holly Dufrene produced five kills. Sydney McNair-Seigler had three aces. McKenzie Wilkie contributed 11 digs and Barrett distributed 13 assists. In the loss to West Forsyth, Ejieke and Dufrene produced 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Huff finished with three blocks. Riley Jarrett contributed five aces. Barrett had 13 digs and 13 assists. Emma Wall totaled 14 assists. He allowed six earned runs on seven hits, one hit batsman, and three walks with four strikeouts. Barnett left with the game tied 6-6 but the RockHounds rallied to win 11-10 in eleven innings. For the season, the 23-year-old is 7-7 with a 4.62 ERA and 134 strikeouts in 133-⅔ innings. Midland (69-50 overall) has a 29-21 record in the Texas League’s second half and leads the South Division. The ‘Hounds play six games this week at the San Antonio Missions. LOGAN MARTIN — Columbia Fireflies (2nd-yr. pro; Kansas City Royals Single-A affiliate; Carolina League; Kentucky; Cartersville HS) … made a five-inning pitching start on Sunday evening at home with no decision against the Fredericksburg Nationals. The right-handed hurler allowed three earned runs on five hits and one walk. He fanned four.  Fredericksburg won the game in 10 innings, 7-6. Martin has a 3-3 record this season in 22 appearances including 14 starts. He also has three saves in relief stints. Martin has a 4.10 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 90 innings pitched. The Fireflies (63-53 overall) are 28-23 in the Carolina League’s second-half standings and trail the Charleston RiverDogs by three games. August 22, 2024 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com The Cass Colonels scored on each of their first half possessions Thursday night and cruised to a 48-0 home win over the Model Blue Devils. The Colonels' defense created turnovers and stifled the Blue Devils' offense for most of the night. Quarterback Brody McWhorter tossed three touchdown passes. Braylon Hill rushed for two touchdowns while Jachai Delgado and Jerome Sanders added one touchdown run each. Chase Tatum, Hill, and Elijah Slocum hauled in the Cass touchdown receptions. The Colonels received the opening kickoff and engineered an 80-yard drive to take a 6-0 lead just 3:16 into the first quarter. McWhorter connected with his tight end Chase Tatum for a 4-yard score but the PAT kick failed. The Cass defense forced Model to punt on their first possession and the Colonels’ offense marched back down the field. Braylon Hill scored the first of his touchdowns to culminate the drive with a 1-yard plunge. With 1:37 remaining in the first quarter the Colonels held a 13-0 lead following the first of six Mason Madrid PAT kicks. Hill finished off the Colonels’ third possession with a 6-yard jaunt. The scoring run put Cass up 20-0 with 9:16 left in the first half. Running back Jachai Delgado capped the fourth Cass offensive possession with a 13-yard scamper to give the Colonels a 27-0 advantage with 5:57 left in the second quarter. Ja’Kai Baldwin’s interception created the possession. Following a fumble recovery by Jeremiah Deroche’ that gave the Colonels another short field, McWhorter hooked up with Hill for a 17-yard touchdown pass and a 34-0 lead with 4:56 remaining before the half. The Cass defense got the ball back with less than a minute remaining in the half to set up another score. The offense responded with a 59-yard scoring drive. McWhorter found Slocum for a 38-yard strike and a 41-0 lead at the intermission. With a running clock, Jerome Sanders sprinted for a 46-yard touchdown with 1:21 left in the third quarter. It was the only scoring play of the second half. McWhorter was 14-for-18 passing for 227 yards and three touchdowns all in the first half. He added 12 rushing yards on three attempts. Hill totaled 87 rushing yards on nine carries. Sanders finished with 49 yards on five attempts and Jachai Delgado added 37 yards on six carries. Slocum led the receiving corp with six catches for 86 yards. The Colonels finished the night with 427 total yards on offense -- 200 rushing and 227 passing. Model (1-1) hosts Coosa next Friday. Cass (2-0) will entertain Adairsville (2-0) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

August 24, 2024 The Woodland girls finished sixth of 14 teams on Saturday at the 32nd Ridge Ferry Invitational held at Rome's Ridge Ferry Park. Meanwhile, the Cass boys were 12th and the Woodland boys were 14th of 19 teams in varsity races. The Lady Cats were led by Allison Snead (17th, 20:29), Miranda Pelow (20th, 21:00), Addison Brown (37th, 22:30), Abby George (64th, 24:10), and Sophia St. James (66th, 24:12). Pope won the girls' varsity race and it included 125 competitors. Pope also won the boys varsity race and it included 161 runners. The Cass boys were led by Nicholas Robinson (34th, 17:43), Leonardo Galeana (56th, 18:32), Booker Gearhart (59th, 18:41), Jordan Russell (74th, 18:59), and Benny Flores (105th, 20:08). The Woodland boys were led by Will Parker (43rd, 17:52), James Morris (52nd, 18:18), Gabe Hardin (73rd, 18:58), Logan Marr (78th, 19:06), and Charlie Hennington (100th, 19:49). Next on the Cass and Woodland schedules is the 18th Annual Run at the Rock hosted by Woodland on September 7. CARTERSVILLE XC TEAMS RACE AT BOB BLASTOW EARLY BIRD INVITE The Cartersville High cross country teams competed on Saturday at the Bob Blastow Early Bird Invitational in Whitesburg at the McIntosh Nature Preserve. The girls' event was won by Pace Academy and the boys' team race was won by Jones County. The girls' race included 199 runners and the boys' race had 249 competitors. The Lady Canes placed 17th of 21 teams while the Hurricanes were 11th of 27 teams. The Cartersville girls were led by Sofia Burns (10th, 19:25), Kylie Ham (77th, 21:56), Vivi Vest (109th, 22:42), Hadley Finnemore (144th, 23:36), and Samantha Stepp (151st, 23:49). The Cartersville boys leaders were Barrett Stepp (41st, 16:31), Will Feuerbach (54th, 16:48), Kaleb Lanier (63rd, 17:01), Hayden Mitchell (79th, 17:20), and Micah Sanders (90th, 17:32). August 24, 2024 LOCAL SOFTBALL ROUNDUP -- THURSDAY and SATURDAY The Adairsville Lady Tigers have won four straight games after sweeping Gilmer on Thursday and taking a doubleheader from Armuchee on Saturday. Adairsville blanked Gilmer on Thursday night to complete a region series sweep with the Bobcats this week. The Lady Tigers added to an early 2-0 lead with a four-run fourth inning to take control of the game.  Adairsville outhit Gilmer in the contest, nine to two. Brie Patterson had two hits against Gilmer including a double. Riley Mounger and Lily Roberts also had two hits each. Ashlyn Carlton collected Thursday’s pitching win with a seven-inning shutout. She allowed just two hits and one walk while fanning eleven. On Saturday, the Lady Tigers swept Armuchee in a doubleheader 14-8 and 13-6. Pitchers Jordan Clay (7 IP, 8R, 4ER, 11H, 4BB, 8K) and Maddie Baggett (7 IP, 6R, 4ER, 7H, 3BB, 3K) tossed complete games to earn wins. Ansley Powell, Roberts, and Taylor Evans had two hits in the opening game on Saturday. Roberts had four hits and three RBI in Game 2. Alivia Joslin followed with three hits. August 23, 2024 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com Cartersville quarterback Nate Russell tossed touchdown passes to Tyon Coe and Brady Marchese, running back Baylon Long rushed for two scores, and Jacaiden Leonard added another touchdown run in a 35-6 win over Rockmart on Friday night at Weinman Stadium. The Cartersville defense allowed its first points of the season but was dominant in the contest forcing five Rockmart turnovers. The Canes missed a pair of field goal attempts early in the first quarter before Leonard broke the scoring ice with a 63-yard touchdown run. Ramsey Rowell added the PAT kick for a 7-0 Cartersville lead with 2:34 left in the opening period. After possession exchanges, the Canes got on the scoreboard again.  Coe caught a short screen pass from Russell on third down and turned it into a 54-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead with 9:57 left in the second quarter. On the Hurricanes’ next possession, Leonard produced some key runs to move Cartersville deep into the red zone. On 3rd-and-goal, Long punched in a 1-yard run for a 21-0 advantage with 4:53 left in the half. Rockmart scored on the Yellow Jackets next possession to narrow the margin to 21-6. A 27-yard pass from Luke Parker to Aadrian Samples moved the ball into the red zone before Parker connected with Tristan Anderson for a 2-yard touchdown pass with 1:02 remaining in the second quarter. Riley Gober missed the Yellow Jackets’ extra point attempt but Rockmart was on the scoreboard following an 8-play, 59-yard drive. Cartersville answered immediately.  Brady Marchese caught a quick pass in the flat from Nate Russell and sprinted down the left sideline for a 53-yard touchdown. The scoring play and Rowell's PAT gave the Canes a 28-6 lead at halftime. Cartersville outgained the Yellow Jackets 320 yards to 82 total yards in the first half. Rockmart moved the ball into Cartersville territory on the opening possession of the second half and the drive was extended by a roughing the passer penalty. Canes’ defensive back Reed Ezell ended the drive, however, with a tipped-ball interception with 8:09 remaining in the third quarter. The Hurricanes were forced to punt again on their next possession and Anderson returned the kick into Cartersville territory. That possession for Rockmart ended with a fumble at the Cartersville 35-yard line with 5:40 remaining in the third quarter. Again, Rockmart forced a Cartersville punt and returned the kick beyond their 40-yard line. A personal foul penalty moved the Yellow Jackets into Cartersville territory and they eventually drove to the 10-yard line. The drive ended, however, with Rockmart’s fourth turnover of the night. Cartersville’s Brayden Logan intercepted Parker’s pass in the end zone with 11:57 remaining in the game. On the ensuing Cartersville drive, the Canes converted a 4th-and-short in their territory with a Russell keeper. Long added an 18-yard run and a Leonard run moved the Canes inside the Rockmart 30-yard line. Three plays later, Russell converted another fourth down play before Long raced it in for an 18-yard touchdown run with 4:42 left in the game.  The 13-play drive covered 80 yards and took 7:05 off the game clock essentially icing the game. The touchdown and PAT kick gave the Canes a 35-6 advantage. Russell was 10-for-17 for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Marchese led the receiving corps with three catches for 70 yards. A’Darian Taylor-Wilson had three receptions for 43 yards and Ja’Mauri Brice finished with four receptions. Leonard paced the Canes’ rushing attack with 127 yards on 11 attempts. Long had 103 yards on 16 carries. Rockmart (0-2) has a bye week before traveling to Ringgold on September 6. August 23, 2024 The Adairsville Tigers trailed at halftime on Thursday night at Pepperell but controlled the second half in a 31-14 win in Lindale. Tigers’ quarterback Ethan Long tossed four touchdown passes in the game — two each to Colt Sanford and Tre Winters and Adairsville scored 24 unanswered points in the second half. The Tigers' opening drive of the night chewed up six minutes off the game clock but was stopped at the Pepperell 30-yard line on a fourth-and-inches play.  Pepperell converted the turnover on downs into points in just one play. Madoc Garcia raced 70 yards on first down for a Dragons touchdown. The PAT by Cameron Jones gave Pepperell a 7-0 lead with 6:02 remaining in the first quarter. Adairsville tied the game on the next possession. A six-play, 69-yard drive culminated with a 41-yard touchdown pass from Long to Sanford. The PAT by Cooper Souders evened the score at 7-7. Following three-and-out possessions by both teams, Adairsville drove to the Pepperell 6-yard line only to turn the ball over on downs.  The Dragons responded with a 94-yard touchdown drive to take the lead. On the fifth play of the possession, quarterback Sam Ross connected with Kellen Edeburn on a screen pass that the receiver turned into a 59-yard touchdown. Pepperell’s PAT gave the Dragons a 14-7 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Tigers’ defense blanked Pepperell. Meanwhile, Long connected with Winters for a pair of third-quarter touchdowns. He also had a touchdown pass to Sanford in the fourth quarter.  A 38-yard field goal by Souders in the fourth quarter rounded out the scoring and solidified a 31-14 Adairsville victory. August 23, 2024 The Woodland Wildcats struggled offensively with turnovers on Thursday night and fell to the visiting Woodstock Wolverines, 42-3. Woodland matched Class 5A Woodstock defensively in the first quarter with both teams struggling to score. The Wildcats even managed to strike first with a 43-yard field goal by Nick Miranda with 1:56 remaining in the opening quarter. At the 10:32 mark of the second quarter, the Wolverines tied the score with their own 26-yard field goal to make the score 3-3. The remainder of the scoring would belong to Woodstock. The Wolverines broke the early tie with a 37-yard screen pass for a touchdown and grabbed a 10-3 lead with 5:04 remaining in the first half. Following a brief possession by Woodland, the Wolverines extended their lead to 13-3 with a 30-yard field goal with 3:15 remaining in the period.  Woodstock struck again just before the intermission. This time it was a short pass that turned into a 37-yard touchdown and built a 19-3 lead for the Wolverines. A two-point conversion attempt failed, but Woodstock held a 16-point advantage heading into the locker room. The Wolverines controlled the second half. A Woodland fumble turned into a 47-yard scoop and score for a touchdown with 9:30 left in the third quarter. A PAT kick and a safety on Woodland’s ensuing possession gave the Wolverines a 28-3 lead with 9:09 remaining in the quarter. Later in the third period, Woodstock added to the advantage with a 19-yard touchdown pass. Following the PAT kick, the Wolverines led 35-3 with 2:42 left in the third quarter. Woodstock added one more scoring drive in the fourth quarter. It was culminated by a short rushing touchdown with 5:30 remaining to seal a decisive 42-3 victory. The Wolverines improved to 2-0 and will host North Springs next Friday. Woodland (1-1) has a bye in their schedule next week. The Hurricanes have now won seven of their last eight matches. Amara Ejieke and Holly Dufrene led the Lady Canes’ front line against the Wildcats with eight and six kills, respectively.  Riley Huff contributed three blocks. In the win over the Lady Eagles, Dufrene had seven kills and four blocks. Addison Marisko totaled six kills. Huff contributed six blocks and Aubree Barrett added 10 assists. Cartersville (9-4) plays in a tournament on Saturday at Calhoun. WOODLAND DROPS MATCH WITH EAST PAULDING The Lady Cats fell in straight sets to East Paulding on Thursday in a best-of-three. The Raiders won 25-11, 25-15, and 25-16. Bella King had three service aces for the Wildcats and Izzy Hazelwood led the front line with eight attacks. Woodland (2-9) hosts Dalton and Cartersville on Tuesday. ADAIRSVILLE SPLITS REGION MATCHES The Adairsville Lady Tigers split their opening Region 7-AAA matches on Thursday evening falling to Calhoun (13-25, 10-25) but defeating Gilmer (20-25, 27-25, 15-12). In the loss to Calhoun, Addie Pearson had three kills, three blocks, and two digs. Delaney Baxter totaled 10 digs. In the win over Gilmer, Pearson finished with five kills, six digs, and 29 assists. Abby Farr added four kills. Adairsville (5-8) returns to action on Tuesday at Ridgeland and will also face LaFayette. CASS WINS AT GODRON CENTRAL, DROPS MATCH TO FANNIN The Lady Colonels split a tri-match at Gordon Central on Thursday evening. Cass lost to the Fannin Rebels (12-25, 8-25) but beat the host Warriors (25-16, 21-25, 15-11) in three sets. In the loss to Fannin, Blayke Gardiner had five blocks. Jaela Smith contributed two kills. Addison Reed had two assists and Harlee Davis added a service ace. In the three-set win over Gordon Central, Gardiner totaled seven blocks. Davis contributed five aces and four kills. Carson Brannon added 12 digs and Reed distributed 10 assists. Cass (1-3) plays on Saturday in a tournament at Rockmart.

August 21, 2024 The Cartersville Lady Canes volleyball team won a pair of home matches in the Storm Center on Tuesday night defeating Sequoyah and Harrison. In the opening match with Sequoyah, the Canes won the first set 25-21, dropped the middle set 20-25, but rallied to take the match with a 15-11 win in the third set. Riley Huff had nine kills and five blocks. Amara Ejieke finished with seven kills and five digs. Holly Dufrene contributed six kills while Addison Marisko added five kills and two blocks on the front line. Adahlyn Womack and Addie Rickman produced three and two blocks, respectively.  Riley Jarrett and Emma Wall had two aces each. Jarrett added six digs and Wall added 10 assists. McKenzie Wilkie led the Hurricanes with 12 digs and Aubree Barrett distributed 17 assists. Cartersville started slowly and trailed most of the opening set with Harrison before rallying to win 26-24. The Canes followed with a 25-20 win in set two to take the match with the Hoyas. Ejieke paced the Canes' front line with nine kills and two blocks. Marisko, Dufrene, and Huff had six kills and two blocks each. Sydney McNair-Seigler contributed eight digs and Wilkie had six digs. Jarrett finished with two aces and four digs. Barrett controlled the offense with 20 assists and Wall added eight assists. Cartersville (7-4) hosts Villa Rica and North Cobb Christian on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
