Hoops roundup: Colonels win region opener at Villa Rica

Local high school basketball summaries for games played on Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3.
CASS BOYS 61, VILLA RICA 48
The Colonels built a comfortable lead early at Villa Rica Saturday and held on throughout for a 13-point Region 7-AAAAA win. Cass led 16-10 after one quarter and 30-17 at halftime. Villa Rica cut the lead to 42-32 after three quarters, but the Colonels outscored the Wildcats 19-16 in the final period for a 61-48 win.
The Colonels put four players in double figures, led by Ian Whittington with 17 points.
Jake Collum scored 15 points for Cass, followed by Jacquez Milles with 14 and C.J. Bennett with 12 points. Ashton Burley added three points.
Villa Rica (2-1, 1-1) was led by Tamarcus Middlebrook with 12 points. Micah Hodges and Rodney Thomas scored eight for the Wildcats and Jabrette Hart added seven. Cass (3-1, 1-0) plays at Paulding County Tuesday night, will host East Paulding Friday and Kell on Saturday night, December 10.
VILLA RICA GIRLS 61, CASS 47
Villa Rica led by six after one quarter, nine at halftime, and 10 after three quarters on their way to a 61-47 home region victory over the visiting Lady Colonels.
Junior Jaila Orozco led the Wildcats with 16 points. Sophomore Deasia Merrill followed with 15 points for Villa Rica.
Villa Rica improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Region 7-AAAAA with the win.
Cass (2-2, 0-1) plays at Paulding County Tuesday, hosts East Paulding Friday, and entertains Kell on Saturday.
ROCKMART BOYS 69, ADAIRSVILLE 59
The visiting Yellow Jackets led a close game at each quarter stop during a 10-point victory Saturday evening at Adairsville.
Rockmart led 12-9 after one quarter and 30-25 at halftime. They maintained their five point lead through three quarters, leading 48-43.
Adairsville had three players in double figures. Cole Hewatt led the Tigers with 12 points, followed by Ronald Hardin and Hunter Hice with 10 points each. Ethan Belcher finished with nine points. Cody Henderson scored seven. Juan Perez added six and James Sims scored five points.
Rockmart’s Bronson Garner led all scorers with 17 points. Morgan Sims contributed 16 points for the victors, followed by Avery Allen and Logan Burge with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Rockmart improved to 2-1 with their win. Adairsville (3-3) also fell to Ringgold Friday night by a 62-55 score. The Tigers host North Murray Tuesday night and travels to Murray County Friday night.
ROCKMART GIRLS 64, ADAIRSVILLE 48
The Lady Tigers led by nine after one quarter, but the visiting Lady Yellow Jackets scored 21, 18, and 17 points over the final three periods to distance themselves.
Havyn Isaac led Adairsville with 12 points.
The Lady Tigers host North Murray on Tuesday.
CALHOUN GIRLS 57, CARTERSVILLE 24
Anna George had a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Jana Johns scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Calhoun past Cartersville Saturday afternoon in Calhoun.
Ashlyn Barnes and Cassie Henderson scored eight points each for the Lady Jackets. They both also added eight rebounds. Barnes was credited with four steals.
Calhoun improved to 4-2.
Cartersville (2-3) plays next in two weeks — Saturday, December 17 — at Paulding County.
RINGGOLD GIRLS 74, ADAIRSVILLE 47
No game report made available for Friday night’s game at Adairsville.
RINGGOLD BOYS 62, ADAIRSVILLE 55
Ringgold came from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat Adairsville by seven points Friday night at Adairsville. Ringgold led 15-14 after one quarter, but Adairsville went to halftime ahead 32-29. Ringgold pulled to within one by the end of the third quarter at 44-43 and outscored Adairsville 19-11 in the fourth quarter for their win.
