February 10, 2024 Cartersville’s Anetra Witherspoon placed second in the 190-pound weight class and Adairsville freshman Jaylee Long finished third in the 100-pound division this past Friday at the Girls Section 2 tournament at Harris County High School. Both local wrestlers will advance to the all-classification GHSA Girls State Championship tournament in Macon this coming Thursday through Saturday. Witherspoon finished 3-1 in her sectional bracket. She had two wins by fall over opponents from Dacula and Carrollton plus a 10-6 decision victory over an opponent from Brantley County. In the finals, she lost 6-0 to Terra Burse of Southeast Whitfield. Long went 4-1 in the Sectional tournament with wins over opponents from Mountain View, Wayne County, Troup, and Pickens. Her lone loss was a 1-0 decision to Jordan Epstein of Greenbrier. The Round of 12 and Round of 8 at the state tournament will take place on Thursday afternoon at the Macon Centreplex. Friday will be for the wrestlebacks and Semifinals. The state title bouts will take place on Saturday.

February 10, 2024 The Adairsville girls' soccer team dropped a 4-3 decision on Friday evening at Sonoraville. Goals by Ella Edwards in the 25th minute and Lizzie LeMay in the 35th minute gave the Lady Tigers a 2-1 advantage at halftime. Emma Edwards and Victoria Loudon assisted on the first-half goals. Alexa Damer scored in the 41st minute for Adairsville, but the Lady Tigers were outscored 3-1 in the second half. Adairsville (2-1) plays at Pepperell on Tuesday.

February 10, 2024 The Woodland boys soccer team roared into action on Friday night at East Paulding and dispatched the host Raiders, 6-1. Joel Alberto ignited the Wildcats' offense with a goal in the 13th minute off an assist from Juan Mendoza to give Woodland a 1-0 lead. Chris Sanchez followed with a nice header into the net in the 30th minute off another Mendoza pass. Alberto struck again off a Mendoza feed in the 39th minute giving the Wildcats a 3-0 advantage at the intermission. In the second half, Sanchez contributed goals in the 47th, 58th, and 73rd minutes. Each goal was assisted by Juan Pineda. Keeper Miguel Pineda made eight saves on the night for the Wildcats. Woodland (1-0) will host Pepperell on Thursday.

February 10, 2024 UNITY CHRISTIAN 69, EXCEL CHRISTIAN BOYS 60 Unity Christian defeated the Excel Christian boys for the third time this season on Friday night to capture the GAPPS Region 1 of Division I-A championship game in Powder Springs. Unity won both regular season matchups and the region title game on Friday, 69-60. The Lions led 30-26 at halftime and 51-45 through three quarters. Unity then held on in the final period for a nine-point win. Jayden Jinks and Kamarion Profit led the Eagles with 14 points each. David Jinks and Carlos Cartagena scored 10 points for Excel. By winning the region, Unity will receive a first-round bye in the GAPPS State Tournament and host the Alleluia Community / Holy Ground Baptist Academy winner in the second round. Excel Christian will host Trinity Prep on either Monday or Tuesday in the first round of the Division I-A State Tournament.

The Cass girls and boys basketball teams earned Region 7-5A wins Friday night at Woodland while both Cartersville teams suffered losses at Hiram. _____________ CASS GIRLS 51, WOODLAND 36 The Cass girls won at Woodland Friday night, 51-36. The Lady Colonels led 25-14 at the intermission. KK Evans led Cass with 14 points. Tamira Feanny added 10 points. Libby Morgan and Gracie Shipp scored nine points each for Woodland. Megan Echols added six points. Woodland (7-15, 0-10) and Cass (15-10, 4-6) will begin play in the Region 7-5A tournament on Monday at Cartersville High School. CASS BOYS 65, WOODLAND 61 The host Wildcats held leads of 12-8 after one quarter and 27-23 at halftime before the Colonels caught them at 40-all by the end of the third quarter. Cass outdistanced Woodland 25-21 in a high-scoring fourth quarter to squeeze out the region win. Jakai Baldwin and Kyron McClendon combined for 16 of the Colonels’ 25 points in the final period. McClendon led Cass with 17 points. Comari Nettles and Baldwin followed with 14 points each. Kevin Henderson added 13 for the Colonels. Brelace Williams paced Woodland with 21 points. Jayden Metcalf scored 14 and Zyon Heath added 12 points for the Wildcats. Woodland (7-17, 1-9) and Cass (7-14, 3-7) will both open the Region 7-5A tournament at Cartersville High School on Monday. HIRAM 64, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 49 The host Hornets broke open a tight game in the third quarter Friday night and held off the Canes down the stretch for a 64-49 Region 7-5A victory. The game was tied after the opening eight minutes, 12-12, and Hiram led 29-26 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Hornets stretched their lead to 52-39 en route to their 15-point win. Chase Tyler led Hiram with 32 points. Ced McClinic scored 14 and Nas Bennett had 11 points for the Hurricanes. Hiram improved to 16-8 on the season and 9-1 to win the Region 7-5A regular season title. Cartersville (11-14, 7-3) will host the region tournament next week. HIRAM 53, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 49 The Lady Canes dropped a narrow 53-49 decision Friday night at Hiram in both teams’ final region game. KK Arnold led Cartersville with 17 points and nine rebounds. Senai Camper followed with 13 points and seven boards. Ansley Griffin scored nine points for the Lady Canes. Hiram improved to 11-14 on the season and 4-6 in region play. The Lady Canes (14-11, 7-3) will host the Region 7-5A tournament that begins on Monday at the Storm Center.

February 9, 2024 The Woodland boys tennis team dropped a 5-0 decision Thursday night to North Paulding. All three singles lost to their Wolfpack opponent — Peter Heins (0-6, 2-6), Domenic Ciavarro (4-6, 2-6), and Jack Gore (3-6, 2-6). Woodland’s lone doubles team — Kaiden Holbrook and Alex Gerstner fell 4-6, 1-6. The second doubles line was forfeited by the Wildcats. Woodland returns to action on Wednesday at home against Allatoona.

February 8, 2024 The Adairsville girls' soccer team pulled out a 1-0 win Thursday night at Cedartown. After a scoreless first half, Lizzie LeMay scored for the Lady Tigers in the 59th minute off an assist from Elle Causby. The cross by Causby found LeMay perfectly centered in the box to tap the ball into the net. The Adairsville girls (2-0) play at Sonoraville on Friday.

The Excel Christian Academy Eagles routed their way into the GAPPS Region 1-IA championship game by pounding The Stonehaven School in Thursday night’s semifinals, 89-38. Excel raced to a 33-7 lead in the first quarter and was never threatened. They led 56-18 at halftime. David Jinks led four Eagles in double-figure scoring with 20 points. Carlos Cartagena finished with 16. Carter May contributed 14 points and Zion Green added 12 in the victory. David Galloway led The Stonehaven School with 11 points. Excel (9-17) advances to Friday night’s championship game against Unity Christian. The 6:30 p.m. start is hosted at Praise Academy in Powder Springs.

The Cass boys soccer team tied visiting Northwest Whitfield Thursday night at Cochran Stadium, 1-1. The Bruins led 1-0 at the intermission but an Alex Hernandez second-half goal knotted the score and the two non-region opponents finished in a tie. The Colonels (2-0-1) visit Ringgold on Tuesday. NORTHWEST WHITFIELD 9, CASS GIRLS 0 The Northwest Whitfield girls scored seven first-half goals Thursday night and won at Cass, 9-0. The visiting Bruins improved to 1-0. The Cass girls slipped to 0-2. Cass returns to action next Tuesday at Ringgold.
