Trailing by four points at the intermission Saturday night, the Cass Lady Colonels surged in the third quarter to take the lead and made just enough free throws down the stretch to defeat Class 6A New Manchester and win the championship game of the 2022 SMI Carrollton Christmas Classic, 59-56. New Manchester (9-2) held an 18-14 lead after one quarter and carried a 33-29 advantage to the halftime locker room, but Cass made adjustments and took control of the game in the second half. The Lady Jaguars’ leading scorer, Andrea Guilford, was limited to just four points in the second half after pouring in 14 in the first half. Meanwhile, Darianna Sosa and Mikaela Jackson of the Lady Colonels both knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the third quarter and Kiana McDaniel added six more points inside as Cass outscored New Manchester 20-12 in the period and gained a 49-45 lead. Both teams had their chances down the stretch. A tight fourth quarter came down to free throws with the Jags converting 6 of 10 opportunities while the Lady Colonels held on for a three-point victory by making 6 of 12 chances. Olivia Woods, who made the All-Tournament Team, scored a game-high 19 points to lead Cass in scoring. Tournament MVP, Kiana McDaniel, followed with 13 points. Mikaela Jackson and Adrianna Sosa finished with nine points each. Nevaeh Woods contributed seven and KK Evans added two points in the Lady Colonels' win. The Woodland boys’ and girls’ basketball teams lost tournament games Saturday in the Rome Christmas Tournament at Armuchee High School. DARLINGTON 79, WOODLAND BOYS 33 At the Rome Christmas Tournament hosted by Armuchee High School Saturday afternoon, the defending boys’ champion Darlington Tigers defeated Woodland 79-33. Woodland stayed close through the first quarter with Tigers holding a 17-14 lead after the opening eight minutes. Darlington then outscored the Wildcats 23-4 in the second quarter to build a 40-18 lead at the intermission. The Tigers led 68-28 through three quarters. Szymon Paluch, who made six three-pointers, led Darlington with 24 points. Mackay Rush scored 10 for the Tigers. Brelace Williams led Woodland with 18 points. Darlington (6-1) advances to face Rome in the tournament semifinals Monday. Woodland (2-8) will play a consolation game Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Armuchee facing Saturday night’s Chattooga/Model loser. CHATTOOGA 50, WOODLAND GIRLS 27 The Woodland Lady Cats lost 50-27 to Chattooga in their consolation game at the Rome Christmas Tournament Saturday. Mikiyah Parrish scored 23 points to lead the Lady Indians. Morgan Echols scored 11 points for Woodland. Megan Schultz added seven. Woodland (2-8) returns to action Wednesday, December 28 in the Adairsville Holiday Tournament. The Lady Cats will rematch with Chattooga (2-7) at 4 p.m.

The Cartersville High wrestling team finished 15th of 18 teams Friday and Saturday at the Jefferson High School CFK Invitational. The host Dragons won the tournament with 213.5 points followed by Mill Creek (191), Mt. Pisgah Christian (172.5), Hewitt-Trussville, AL (149), and Columbus (144) rounding out the top five teams. Eaiden Neal (126-pounds) had Cartersville’s top performance going 4-1 on the day to place third. Grant Adams (120) was 3-2 and placed fifth. Julian Cline (106) went 2-3 and placed sixth. Montgomery Tompkins (144) was 2-2 in the tournament. The next event on the Canes’ schedule is the Guerrilla Warfare Duals hosted by Cass High School on December 30.

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes completed play Saturday at the Carrollton SMI Christmas Tournament at Central-Carroll High School with a 57-43 loss to North Paulding. The Canes, who finished 1-2 in the tournament, led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter but fell behind 25-16 by halftime. Cartersville narrowed the deficit to 38-33 by the end of the third quarter but was outscored 19-10 in the final period. Ryan Williams scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Wolfpack. Nathan Rodrigues followed with 16 points for North Paulding. Chandler Mathison led Cartersville with 11 points. Romo Pace finished with nine. Jaylen Scott scored six points. Tyren Milner and DJ Cain tossed in five each. Collin Fletcher contributed three points. Kaden Baldwin scored two. Jamauri Brice and Sam Wiedetz added one point each for the Hurricanes. The Wolfpack improved to 5-6 on the season. Cartersville (2-4) will play at the Pickens Holiday Tournament December 28-30 in Jasper. The Canes will open that tournament against the host Dragons on the 28th at 7 p.m. PAULDING COUNTY 71, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 59 The Cartersville Lady Canes lost a non-region decision Saturday afternoon at The Storm Center to visiting Paulding County, 71-59. The win by Paulding earned a season split with Cartersville. The Lady Canes won at Paulding by four points on December 8. Saturday, the Lady Patriots led at each quarter stop holding leads of 18-6, 35-25, and 57-45 at the end of the first three periods. Paulding County held on in the final eight minutes for a 12-point victory. Alexus Wilson scored a game-high 19 points to lead Paulding County. Addison Fuller scored 16 for the Patriots while Arizona Smart and Jenue Lane added 13 points each. Three Cartersville players reached double digits led by Ansley Griffin with 17. Senai Camper scored 13 and Zoe Casey finished with 11 points. KK Arnold contributed six. Jakayah Draughn scored five. Taff Bradley and Nayel Camper added four and three points, respectively. Paulding County improved to 6-5 on the season. Cartersville (4-2) will participate in the Carrollton High School Christmas Tournament Monday and Tuesday with games against Sandy Creek Monday at 2:30 p.m. and against Harris County Tuesday at 11:30 a.m.

The Adairsville Tigers trailed visiting Sonoraville for most of the game Friday night before rallying in the fourth quarter to earn a 54-52 win over the Phoenix. Sonoraville held leads of 17-10, 27-21, and 39-35 at the end of the first three quarters but the Tigers outscored the Phoenix 19-13 over the final eight minutes to collect a two-point, non-region win. “They jumped out to an early lead,” said Adairsville head coach Alex Disbrow, “but we were able to claw back with defensive stops and some timely shooting. Our team defense was excellent after the first quarter.” Tre Winters led Adairsville with 29 points. Tay Jackson and Ben Abernathy scored six each. Zach Postell and Xavious Nalls added five each for the Tigers. Jordyn Storey led Sonoraville with 20 points. Elijah Woods added 11 for the Phoenix. It was the first loss of the season for Sonoraville (8-1). Adairsville (6-2) returns to action Monday at Wesleyan High School in the Spalding Drive Classic. The Tigers will face Stephenson in the first round of the three-day tournament at 4 p.m. SONORAVILLE 51, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 45 The Lady Phoenix led 27-16 at halftime after outscoring the Lady Tigers 18-4 in the second quarter and then held on in the second half for a six-point win at Adairsville Friday night. Analee Morris made five three-pointers and scored 28 points to lead the Adairsville scoring. Zariyah Hicks finished with six points. NaXyria Roberts, Aliya McBryde, and Alissa Winters chipped in with three points each. Megan Gregory added two for the Lady Tigers. Sonoraville, who is now a member of Region 7-AAAA, improved to 8-1. Sonoraville was led by Brynley Walraven's 17 points. The Lady Tigers slipped to 7-2 on the season. Next up for the Adairsville girls will be a matchup with North Laurel, Kentucky in the first round of the Adairsville Holiday Tournament.

The Woodland boys snapped a six-game skid Friday night by defeating host Armuchee 58-55 in the preliminary round of the Rome Holiday Tournament. Woodland (2-7) advances to play Darlington Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the next round. The game will be back at Armuchee High School. The Cass Lady Colonels defeated Class A D-II 7th-ranked Mt. Zion-Carroll 66-38 Friday night at Central-Carroll High School in the semifinal round of the Carrollton SMI Christmas Tournament. Following a close first quarter, Cass broke away in the second period by outscoring the Lady Eagles 22-4 to take a 35-14 lead to the locker room at halftime. The Lady Colonels cruised in the second for a 28-point win. Olivia Woods led Cass in scoring with 17 points. She added five steals. Mikaela Jackson followed with 15 points for the Lady Colonels. Nevaeh Woods contributed 11 points, eight boards, and six assists. Rounding out the Cass effort were Darianna Sosa with six points. Kaitlyn Godwin had five points and seven rebounds. KK Evans scored four points. Kiana McDaniel finished with four points, five rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Sadie Paez and Reese Howard added two points apiece. The loss drops Mt. Zion-Carroll to 7-3 on the season. The Eagles will play Temple Saturday for third place. Cass (8-1) will play for the tournament championship Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. against New Manchester (9-1). The game will be played at Central-Carroll High School. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 64, MT. ZION-CARROLL 51 The Cartersville boys took a 22-10 lead in the first quarter Friday night over Mt. Zion-Carroll and never trailed in a 64-51 consolation round win at the Carrollton SMI Christmas Tournament at Central-Carroll High School. The Canes led 29-24 at halftime and 50-36 through three quarters. Chandler Mathison and Jaylen Scott led the Hurricanes in scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Parnel Gamble and Romo Pace followed with eight each. Jamauri Brice scored seven. Ced McClinic chipped in four points. Sam Wiedetz, Tyren Milner, and DJ Cain contributed three points each. Monte Tolbert added two points. Christian Lee led the Eagles (3-8) with 26 points. CASS GIRLS 53, EAST PAULDING 34 Despite scoring only two points in the second quarter Thursday evening, the Cass Lady Colonels defeated East Paulding in the opening round of the Carrollton SMI Christmas Tournament at Central-Carroll High School. The Cass girls led 15-6 at the end of the first period but trailed 19-17 at halftime. Cass regained the lead for good in the third quarter by outscoring the Lady Raiders 16-10 on their way to a 19-point win. Kiana McDaniel scored 13 points, collected 10 rebounds, and made eight steals to lead the Lady Colonels. Olivia Woods followed with 12 points. Dariana Sosa and Mikaela Jackson posted eight points each. Nevaeh Woods finished with six points, 10 rebounds, and 10 steals. KK Evans contributed four points and Reese Howard added two. The Raiders, who led at the end of each quarter, had four players reach double-digit scoring. Carter Pengelly led East Paulding with 22 points. Norris Martinez scored 17. Jabryan Smith totaled 16 points and Taj Jordan added 13 for the Raiders who improved to 7-2. DJ Cain scored nine points for Cartersville. Kaden Brown and Jamauri Brice finished with seven each. Monte Tolbert, Tyren Milner, and Jaylen Scott totaled six points each. Collin Fletcher added three for the Canes. The Adairsville Tigers' wrestling team swept a pair of duals Wednesday night at Model High School defeating Darlington 67-12 and Model 46-33. Three Tigers finished the night with a pair of wins each: Madden Boyce (113), Druu Faulk (165), and Jett Johnson (285) were all 2-0. Adairsville wrestling returns to action Friday and Saturday at Coahulla Creek's tournament.

Both Adairsville High basketball teams defeated visiting Coahuila Creek Tuesday night with the Lady Tigers winning 58-47 and the Tigers earning a 56-38 win. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 58, COAHULLA CREEK 47 Analee Morris, Naxyria Roberts, and Aliya McBryde reached double figures in scoring Tuesday night with 19, 11, and 10 points, respectively, as the Lady Tigers improved to 3-1 in Region 6-AAA games. The Lady Tigers and Lady Colts were tied 25-25 at halftime. Adairsville led 39-36 at the end of the third quarter and extended that lead in the fourth quarter for an 11-point victory. The host Raiders led 19-16 after the opening eight minutes and held a 33-26 lead at halftime. The Colonels narrowed the margin to 43-40 heading into the fourth quarter before outscoring Southeast 33-21 in the fourth quarter for a nine-point win. Cal Rich scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Raiders. Braden Miles added 16 for Southeast. Jelani Hames scored nine of his 15 points in the fourth quarter to help the Colonels to the win.
