Lady Colonels advance to SMI Christmas Tourney finals; Canes reach consolation finals


The Cass Lady Colonels defeated Class A D-II 7th-ranked Mt. Zion-Carroll 66-38 Friday night at Central-Carroll High School in the semifinal round of the Carrollton SMI Christmas Tournament.


Following a close first quarter, Cass broke away in the second period by outscoring the Lady Eagles 22-4 to take a 35-14 lead to the locker room at halftime. The Lady Colonels cruised in the second for a 28-point win.


Olivia Woods led Cass in scoring with 17 points. She added five steals.


Mikaela Jackson followed with 15 points for the Lady Colonels. Nevaeh Woods contributed 11 points, eight boards, and six assists.


Rounding out the Cass effort were Darianna Sosa with six points. Kaitlyn Godwin had five points and seven rebounds. KK Evans scored four points. Kiana McDaniel finished with four points, five rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Sadie Paez and Reese Howard added two points apiece.


The loss drops Mt. Zion-Carroll to 7-3 on the season. The Eagles will play Temple Saturday for third place.


Cass (8-1) will play for the tournament championship Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. against New Manchester (9-1). The game will be played at Central-Carroll High School.


CARTERSVILLE BOYS 64, MT. ZION-CARROLL 51


The Cartersville boys took a 22-10 lead in the first quarter Friday night over Mt. Zion-Carroll and never trailed in a 64-51 consolation round win at the Carrollton SMI Christmas Tournament at Central-Carroll High School.


The Canes led 29-24 at halftime and 50-36 through three quarters.


Chandler Mathison and Jaylen Scott led the Hurricanes in scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Parnel Gamble and Romo Pace followed with eight each. Jamauri Brice scored seven. Ced McClinic chipped in four points. Sam Wiedetz, Tyren Milner, and DJ Cain contributed three points each. Monte Tolbert added two points.


Christian Lee led the Eagles (3-8) with 26 points.


Cartersville (2-3) will play North Paulding Saturday at 2 p.m. at Central-Carroll for the consolation bracket championship.
