The Adairsville Tigers and the Cass Colonels produced one-sided wins Friday night while the Woodland Wildcats came up short on the road. Adairsville won an important Region 6-AAA game at home over expected region contender Ringgold 49-10. The victory keeps the Tigers unbeaten through two region games. Cass traveled to Decatur and posted 63 unanswered points in a blowout win at M.L. King, while Woodland fell behind early and never recovered in a 38-14 loss at Osborne. ADAIRSVILLE 49, RINGGOLD 10 The Adairsville Tigers made another statement Friday night with a solid 49-10 win over visiting Region 6-AAA foe Ringgold. Chris Roper scored on touchdown runs of 20 and 16 yards and tossed a three-yard jump pass for a touchdown to Connor Ray to pace the Tigers’ offense. Ethan Blome sprinted to a 94-yard touchdown run in the second quarter; quarterback Jonathan Gough scored on a one-yard keeper and tossed a three-yard touchdown passes to Grayson Belcher in the second half; Authur Leffler converted a 33-yard field goal in the second quarter and kicker Cooper Souders converted four PAT kicks. Adairsville rushed for 330 yards while limiting Ringgold to just 161 total yards. Ethan Blome had 114 yards rushing on eight carries. Caden Copeland finished with 84 yards on five carries, and Roper totaled 66 rushing yards on 10 attempts. Gough completed 13 of 15 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns. Belcher had nine receptions for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Tre Winters made three catches for 23 yards and Roper added one reception for 44 yards. Adairsville (4-1, 2-0 Region 6-AAA) travels to LaFayette next Friday for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. CASS 63, M.L. KING 7 Freshman quarterback Brodie McWhorter threw five touchdown passes while Devin Henderson passed for a touchdown and caught two McWhorter scoring passes as the Cass Colonels cruised to a 63-7 non-region win over M.L. King at Buck Godfrey Stadium in Decatur. McWhorter had touchdown tosses of 34-yards to Devin Henderson, 27-yards to Sacovie White, 3-yards to Chase Tatum, 63-yards to White, and 30-yards to Devin Henderson in the first three quarters. Devin Henderson threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Henderson with 5:06 remaining in the first quarter to put the Colonels’ first points on the board. Saul Viella kicked two Cass extra points in the first half although two PAT attempts failed. The Colonels still led 28-0 at halftime. The Cass defense cashed in with a safety midway through the second quarter after Viella pinned to Lions down at their own 1-yard line with an excellent punt and team coverage. The Cass defense added to the scoring barrage in the third quarter. Ja’Kai Baldwin picked off an M.L. King pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown with 9:34 remaining in the period. He later scooped up a Lions’ fumble at the 15-yard line and raced it into the end zone for another Cass score. In the final minute of the third quarter, Devin Henderson picked off another Lions’ pass and returned it to the M.L. King 14-yard line. Four plays later, Freddi Gbadie scored on a three-yard run to give Cass a 63-0 lead. In a continuously running clock fourth quarter, M.L. King scored a touchdown with 9:55 remaining. Ramique Thomas broke free for the Lions’ 53-yard touchdown run. On the ensuing possession, the Cass offense drove to the M.L. King red zone and ended the game with a fourth down play at the Lions’ 10-yard line. The loss drops M.L. King to 1-4 on the season. Cass (2-3) begins play in Region 7-AAAAA next Friday at Woodland. Pregame coverage will begin at 6 p.m. with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. OSBORNE 38, WOODLAND 14 Too many turnovers and an inability to finish scoring drives left the Woodland Wildcats on the short end of a 38-14 decision Friday night at Osborne. The host Cardinals (5-0) benefited from three first half Khalif Walters touchdown runs on their way to a 31-3 halftime lead. Walters scored on 1-yard and 4-yard runs in the first quarter and ripped off a 48-yard scamper early in the second quarter. Edward Burr added a 14-yard touchdown run midway through the second period and the Cardinals booted a 38-yard field goal in the final minute of the opening half. The 31-point surge for Osborne came after Woodland started the game with a productive drive. The Wildcats methodically drove to the Cards’ 10-yard line on their opening possession before the drive stalled. Woodland’s Spencer Fleming made a 27-yard field goal that had the Wildcats up 3-0 midway through the first quarter. Two minutes into the third quarter, Burr connected with Joshua Horton for a 45-yard Osborne touchdown pass that gave the Cardinals a 38-3 lead. Later in the third period, Fleming made a short field goal narrowing the Osborne lead to 38-6. Then in the final minute of the third quarter, Woodland quarterback Brelace Williams found Fleming for a 15-yard touchdown pass. The Wildcats added a two-point conversion pass from Williams to Jamarion Walker making the score, 38-14. The loss leaves Woodland at 1-4 on the season. The Wildcats will host Bartow-rival Cass next Friday in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The Woodland-Cass matchup will be broadcast live on BartowSportsZone.com with pregame coverage starting at 6 p.m.

All three local teams in action Thursday night suffered losses with Cass and Adairsville falling in region games. Woodland dropped a non-region contest. DALTON 11, CASS 1 In the replay of a game that was rain out after 4-1/2 innings two weeks ago with Cass leading, Dalton returned the favor when it counted and overpowered the visitors Thursday night 11-1. The Lady Colonels took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but Dalton took control starting in the second inning. The Catamounts totaled 10 hits in their four offensive frames, scoring five runs in the second inning, four in the third, and two more in the fourth inning. Alexis Woods tripled and scored the Cass run in the first inning. Darianna Sosa finished with two hits. Reese Howard and KK Evans added one hit each. Woods (2.1 IP, 7R, 6ER, 7H, 1BB, 1K) took the pitching loss. Emma Gibson (1.2 IP, 4ER, 3H, 3BB) also pitched for the Colonels. Dalton improved to 3-11 overall and 1-7 in Region 7-5A. Cass (8-15, 5-5) hosts a rematch with the Catamounts next Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. RINGGOLD 4, ADAIRSVILLE 1 The Tigers trailed 4-0 through four innings and couldn’t overcome the deficit in a 4-1 loss Thursday night at Ringgold. Adairsville’s Megan Gregory, who had two hits in the game, hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth to account for the only Lady Tigers’ run. Gregory (4.1 IP, 4R, 1ER, 4H, 3BB, 6K) was also the losing pitcher for Adairsville despite allowing only one earned run. Jordan Clay (1.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB) pitched in relief for the Tigers. Brie Patterson (double), Annalee Morris, and Halle Chasen had the other Adairsville base hits. With the win, Ringgold improved to 7-12 overall and 5-4 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (6-10-1, 2-7) plays at Ridgeland next Tuesday with first pitch at 5:30 p.m. WHEELER 3, WOODLAND 2 Although the run was unearned and aided by two hit batsmen, a walk, and an error, the Wheeler Wildcats broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the fifth inning Thursday night to edge the visiting Woodland Wildcats in a non-region game — 3-2. Woodland scored a run in the top of the first inning for an early lead, but Wheeler’s Kayla Hutchinson hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning for a 2-1 advantage. Woodland’s Kamryn Smith grounded out in the top of the third, but drove in Karmen Zeferino with a tying run. Zeferino had singled to start the frame. Woodland out hit Wheeler five to four, but came up a run short on the scoreboard. Jordan Hammonds, Cambrie Carrington, Alana Carnes, Smith, and Zeferino had one single each. Ashlyn Dowdy (4 IP, 2ER, 4H, 2BB, 5K) was the Woodland starter in the pitching circle. Haley Collum (0.0 IP, 1R, 0ER, 0H, 1BB) suffered the tough luck pitching loss and Ashlyn Baines (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K) also pitched for the locals. Wheeler improved to 5-14 with the win. Woodland (11-12, 5-5 Region 7-5A) returns to region action Tuesday at home against Calhoun.

Adairsville’s volleyball team split matches at home Thursday night with the Tigers defeating Coosa 25-23, 25-9 but losing to Dalton 25-18, 25-14. “The girls fought hard tonight and played for their loved ones who are battling breast cancer or have battled the disease. That’s a win no matter how you slice it in my book,” said Adairsville head coach Kailey Vaughn Martin. A portion of the money raised at the Lady Tigers’ home match Thursday will go to the Melanie Vaughn Memorial Suite at the Harris Radiation Center and the Melanie Vaughn Memorial Scholarship Fund. In the win over Coosa, Addie Pearson had three kills, two blocks, and seven assists. Jenna Claire Hendley finished with three kills and two blocks. Jordan Hartline and Jayna Wilson totaled five and four kills, respectively. Annie McCormick shared seven assists and Sherry Wells contributed 16 digs. In the loss to Dalton, Wells had seven digs. Wilson had two kills and a pair of blocks. McCormick totaled three assists and Richlyn Blair produced two kills. Adairsville, now 9-15-2, will square off with Cartersville Saturday morning at 8 a.m. in the opening round of the Bartow County Championship Tournament hosted by Cass High School.

In local volleyball action Tuesday night, Cartersville defeated Dalton in straight sets to remain unbeaten in Region 7-5A action. The Lady Canes also dropped a non-region match with Lassiter at the Storm Center. Cass split a pair of region matches. The Lady Colonels beat Woodland but lost to Calhoun. Woodland lost twice on the evening in a pair of three set matches. The Lady Cats won the opening set matches against Cass and Hiram, but lost the final two sets for region losses. Adairsville also fell twice in region matches at home, falling to Bremen and LaFayette. CARTERSVILLE SPLITS HOME MATCHES, STAYS UNBEATEN IN REGION PLAY Cartersville volleyball edged visiting Dalton 25-23 and 26-24 in straight sets Tuesday night at the Storm Center to earn a Region 7-5A victory, but lost their non-region match with Lassiter in straight sets, 25-19 and 25-10. Lauren Lawson had 11 kills and Ailee England finished with nine kills and nine digs in the win over Dalton. Tennessee Abernathy contributed three blocks and had five kills. Lily Gochee added 30 assists against the Catamounts. In the loss to Lassiter, Lawson had seven kills. Abernathy totaled four kills and one block. Mia Nicklaus and Riley Jarrett contributed six digs each with Gochee adding 15 assists. Cartersville (17-12, 3-0 Region 7-5A) has a road match at Marietta Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. and will open play against Adairsville Saturday morning in the Bartow County Championship Tournament hosted by Cass. CASS EDGES WOODLAND IN THREE SETS, FALLS TO CALHOUN Cass volleyball won at Woodland Tuesday night in three sets for a Region 7-5A victory, then fell to region foe Calhoun in straight sets. Woodland won the opening set 25-22 before Cass took Sets 2 and 3, 25-23 and 15-8. Calhoun’s win over Cass was 25-12, 25-12. Sophomore Tamira Feanny had nine kills on the night for the Lady Colonels. Caidence Woolridge, also a sophomore, totaled 14 digs while junior Carlee Turner added a block and a pair of block assists. Cass (9-16-1, 1-3) will host the Bartow County Championship Tournament Saturday. WOODLAND DROPS MATCH WITH HIRAM The Lady Cats won the opening set against visiting Hiram Tuesday night, but lost the final two sets and the Region 7-5A match with scores of 25-12 and 15-7 over the final two sets. Combined stats for Woodland (including the match loss to Cass): Kendall Condon had 19 assists, eight digs, and three aces. Kailynn Mullinax finished with four kills, four aces, and four assists. Lili Womack totaled 20 digs and one kill. Bailee Motes was credited with 12 digs, four kills, and two aces. Anastyn Jones had seven kills and five digs while Madison West contributed seven kills in the doubleheader. Woodland (4-19-1, 0-4) plays in the Bartow County Championship Tournament Saturday at Cass. ADAIRSVILLE VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN REGION MATCHES The Lady Tigers lost a pair of Region 6-AAA matches Tuesday night at home — falling to Bremen 25-8, 25-17 and LaFayette 25-21, 25-22. Richlyn Blair had four kills; Sherry Wells contributed eight digs; and Annie McCormick had five assists in the Bremen match. Against LaFayette, Blair finished with eight kills, seven digs, and one block. Jenna Claire Hendley finished with three kills and three blocks. McCormick totaled eight assists and Wells added nine digs. Adairsville (8-14-2, 1-5 in Region 6-AAA) hosts non-region matches with Dalton and Coosa Thursday starting at 5 p.m. and will play in the Bartow County Championship Tournament Saturday at Cass.

Sophomore outfielder Reese Dumas delivered a one-out, walk-off base hit in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday night to lift the Lady Canes to a 7-6 win over visiting Calhoun. The Cartersville victory moves the Lady Canes into sole possession of first place in the Region 7-5A standings with just five region games remaining in the regular season. Calhoun led 2-0 through four innings Tuesday and built a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Cartersville narrowed their deficit to 4-3 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Yellow Jackets responded with two more runs in the top of the sixth to make the score 6-3 but the Hurricanes tied the scored with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the seventh, Cartersville pitcher Ava Perkins allowed a pair of two-out hits to Calhoun but got out of the frame with a line out to Dumas in left field. The Cartersville seventh started with a triple off the bat of Jordan Bishop. Following a strikeout, Campbell Rogers reached on a bunt single but Bishop held up at third on the play. Calhoun opted to intentionally walk Layne Callan to load the bases setting up the game-winning hit by Dumas. Perkins earned the pitching victory with a complete game effort. She scattered nine hits and seven walks while striking out two. The Cartersville offense out hit Calhoun 11 to nine. Elizabeth Nelson had three hits with two RBIs. Dumas followed with two hits and one RBI. Callan also finished with a pair of hits. Mikey Lewis (2 RBIs), Kiley Arnold (RBI), Bishop, and Rogers added one hit each for the Canes. Calhoun slips to 16-5 overall and 8-2 in region play. Cartersville (11-7-1, 9-1) is off until a Monday, non-region doubleheader at Villa Rica. The Canes will then have one more full rotation of games against all five of their region opponents remaining.

Cass softball posted five runs in the bottom of the second inning Tuesday night and never trailed in a 7-4 Region 7-5A win over visiting Woodland. Emma Gibson (4.2 IP, 4ER, 6H, 5BB, 3K) earned the pitching win for the Lady Colonels with Alexis Woods (2.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 1K) picking up a save by recording the final seven outs in relief. Haylee Dishmon paced the Cass offense with three hits and a pair of RBIs. KK Evans followed with two hits including a double. Woods also finished with two hits. Darianna Sosa contributed a double with three RBIs. Ansley Hight (RBI), Braelyn Franklin (RBI), and Harlee Thomason (triple) added one hit each for the Lady Colonels. Kamryn Smith had two hits and a sac fly for one RBI to lead the Woodland attack. Alana Carnes (RBI), Jordan Hammonds, Peyton Dorn, Cambrie Carrington, and Bailey Sakacsi added one hit each. Karmen Zeferino had one RBI with a sacrifice fly. Dorn (3.2 IP, 6ER, 10H, 3BB) was saddled with the pitching loss. Ashlyn Dowdy (2.1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 3BB, 1K) also pitched for the Lady Cats. Megan Gregory earned the pitching victory and finished with four hits at the plate as the Lady Tigers beat visiting Model Tuesday evening, 10-2, in non-region play. Gregory (3 IP, 2R, 0ER, 1H, 1BB, 6K) fanned six and did not allow an earned run in her three innings of work on the mound. At the plate, she had singles in the first, third, and fourth innings before smacking a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to finish with two RBIs. The homer ended the game by run-rule. Jordan Clay (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 3K) and Chelsea Bates (1.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 2K) also pitched for the Tigers in the win. McKenzie Pullam had three hits for Adairsville including a double. Jenna Young (double, 2 RBIs), Annalee Morris (double, RBI), and Taylor Evans followed with two hits each. Halle Chason (2 RBIs), Brie Patterson (RBI), and Madison Baker (RBI) added one hit apiece. The loss dropped Model to 5-10 on the season. Adairsville (7-9-1, 2-6) returns to Region 6-AAA play Thursday at Ringgold in a 5:30 p.m. start.

LaFayette pitcher Ava Brown limited the visiting Lady Canes’ lineup to only three hits Monday night as the Ramblers blanked Cartersville, 11-0, in five innings. LaFayette scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, added five more in the third, and one more in the fourth inning for their 11-run total. Kiley Arnold, Jordan Bishop, and Campbell Rogers had one hit each for Cartersville. Arnold (4 IP, 11R, 6ER, 8H, 4BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss. LaFayette improved to 14-3-1 win their non-region win. Cartersville (10-7-1, 8-1) returns home Tuesday to square off with Calhoun (16-4, 8-1) in a Region 7-5A matchup between the two teams tied atop the league standings.

The Class 5A No. 1-ranked Cartersville Purple Hurricanes will carry an unblemished record into the second half of their season following a 49-0 homecoming win Friday night over the Heritage-Conyers Patriots. The Canes scored on five of their first six possessions and led 35-0 at the intermission. Quarterback Nate Russell tossed four touchdown passes in the win and was 8-for-11 for 157 yards through the air. The freshman found Morocco Wilkey for a 23-yard score with 9:38 remaining in the opening quarter; delivered a short screen pass to Ja’Mauri Brice that Brice took to the end zone from 63-yards away; connected with Collin Fletcher for a 17-yard touchdown with 8:44 left in the second quarter, and tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Romo Pace with 5:08 left in the first half. The first quarter also included a 12-yard touchdown run by Malachi Jeffries after Heritage fumbled at their own 12-yard line. Ryan Johnson converted the first five Canes’ extra point kicks. With a continuous clock in the second half, Tayshaun Carter picked off a pass late in the third quarter and returned it for a pick-six and Baylon Long added a 47-yard touchdown run with 8:34 remaining in the fourth quarter for a 49-0 final. Osiel Nava booted the final extra points. The loss drops the Patriots to 2-2 on the season. Cartersville (5-0) has a bye week before hosting Calhoun September 30.

The Woodland girls and boys cross country teams both finished third Saturday in the Wire2Wire Cross Country Invitational hosted by Cartersville High School at Dellinger Park. The Cartersville girls finished ninth in the 14-team competition that was won by Sequoyah. The girls race included 101 participants. Chamblee won the 17-team boys championship followed by North Forsyth. Cartersville placed seventh and Cass was tenth. The boys field included 121 runners. Olivia Berry (17th, 21:20) led the Lady Cats who bunched all five scoring runners between 17th and 23rd place. Emma Segars (21:26), Miranda Pelow (21:45), Danielle Thayer (21:52), and Abby George (22:11) followed Berry. Meredith Gaines (41st, 23:55) led the Lady Canes. She was followed by teammates Vivi Vest (24:07), Samantha Herrera (24:23), Julianne Latham (25:27), and Milena Bihm (26:06). Cartersville’s Malachi Vosburgh (2nd, 16:24) and Woodland’s Tyler Jones (4th, 16:27) led all local harriers. Vosburgh finished less than one second behind Chamblee’s William Elder for the individual title. Other Woodland scoring runs: Drew Thayer (13th, 17:20), Juan Mendoza (26th, 17:58), Landon McSwain (27th, 17:59), and Rowan Lee (18:17). Other Cartersville scoring runs: Barrett Stepp (37th, 18:18), Hayden Mitchell (18:31), Paul Hyman (18:58), and Micah Sanders (19:32). Critton Gearhart (31st, 18:09) had the best Cass finish followed by Leonardo Galeana (18:39), Adam Pierce (19:04), Jake Wright (19:22), and Sawyer Foy (19:48). Woodland and Cartersville will compete in the Wingfoot Cross Country Classic next Saturday at Sam Smith Park. Next on the Cass schedule is the Rangers Cross Country Invitational in Cumming on October 1.

Cartersville led 1-0 through three innings with Ringgold tying the game 1-1 in the top of the fourth. Ava Perkins hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth as the Hurricanes regained the lead 2-1. The Tigers scored three runs in the top of the fifth to lead 4-2 before the Lady Canes took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. The Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, then added two runs in the third, two in the fourth, and one more run in the fifth inning. Cass managed only four hits. Darianna Sosa (double), Harlee Thomason, Alexis Woods, and Reese Howard had one hit apiece. Cass (7-14, 4-4) went 0-4 in the tournament and now returns to Region 7-5A action Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. when the Colonels host Woodland.

Woodland and Cass both participated in tournament games at the Chattanooga Score International Tournament Friday night. The games were played at Warner Park. Woodland defeated Ringgold in their opener but the Wildcats were shutout by Gordon Lee in the late game. Cass was blanked in both of the Lady Colonels' games — falling to Northwest Whitfield and Heritage-Catoosa by identical 8-0 scores. WOODLAND 4, RINGGOLD 2 The Lady Cats scored two runs in the second inning and two more in the fifth Friday night and it turned out to be enough for pitchers Peyton Dorn and Ashlyn Dowdy to hold off the Ringgold Tigers, 4-2. The two Ringgold runs came in the bottom of the fifth inning after Woodland had taken a 4-0 lead. Dorn (4.2 IP, 2ER, 6H, 1BB) picked up the pitching win. Dowdy (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H) earned a save. Jordan Hammonds had two hits for the Wildcats. Elizabeth Hartsfield contributed a double. Cambrie Carrington finished with one hit and Mackenzie Araya tossed in one hit and one RBI. Bailey Sakacsi and Dorn had the other Woodland RBIs. GORDON LEE 9, WOODLAND 0 Woodland’s Cambrie Carrington had the only Lady Cats’ hit Friday night in a 9-0 loss to Gordon Lee. The Trojans had five hits and added four walks to score seven times in the third inning putting the game out of reach for the Wildcats. Ellie Parker (2 IP, 4ER, 4H, 1BB) suffered the pitching loss. Ashlyn Baines (0.2 IP, 3ER, 2H, 1BB), Bailey Gerstner (0.0 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 2BB), and Kamryn Smith (1.1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1K) all pitched for the Wildcats. Woodland (10-9, 5-4 Region 7-5A) returns to region action Tuesday at Cass at 5:55 p.m. NORTHWEST WHITFIELD 8, CASS 0 A pair of Lady Bruins’ pitchers limited Cass to only four hits Friday night in an 8-0 shutout. Northwest scored a run in the top of the first, added four in the second, and posted three more runs in the top of the fifth. Alexis Woods had two hits for Cass. Braelyn Franklin and KK Evans had the other Lady Colonels’ base hits. Bailey York (5 IP, 8R, 3ER, 9H, 4BB) was tagged with the pitching loss. The Cass defense committed four errors leading to five, unearned runs. HERITAGE-CATOOSA 8, CASS 0 The Heritage-Catoosa Generals outranked the Colonels Friday night with an 8-0 shutout win. Heritage broke open a 2-0 game in the fourth inning by scoring four times. The Generals then added two more runs in the fifth to end the game early. Heritage pounded out 13 hits in their win. Cass managed just two hits — both singles — by Haylee Dishmon and Bailey York. Emma Gibson (4.1 IP, 8R, 6ER, 13H, 2BB, 1K) was the losing pitcher for the Colonels. Cass (7-12, 4-4) is scheduled to play St. Pius X (11 a.m.) and Ringgold (1 p.m.) Saturday in Chattanooga before hosting Woodland in region action Tuesday at 5:55 p.m.
