Adairsville quarterback Jonathan Gough tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Grayson Belcher and ran for another score as the Tigers dominated host Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 42-20 Friday night in both teams’ Region 6-AAA opener. Chris Roper had an 81-yard first quarter touchdown run. Ethan Blome scored the Tigers’ first touchdown on a 1-yard run and Caden Copeland added a 9-yard scoring run in the second quarter. Adairsville led 28-0 when LFO scored the Warriors’ initial touchdown. Quarterback Dylan Blankenship finished off a 9-play, 65-yard drive with a 2-yard run to make the score 28-7. The Tigers answered quickly, however, driving 80 yards for a 35-7 halftime lead. The scoring play was a 20-yard pass from Gough to Belcher. It was their second connection for a touchdown on the night. The duo also combined for a 79-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter. Cooper Souders was true on all six Adairsville PATs. Trailing 42-7 in a continuous clock fourth quarter, Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe added a pair of touchdown passes from Karian Keefe to Brent Bowman. The first TD pass was a 24-yarder. The second was a 10-yarder following an Adairsville turnover at their own 10 yard line. Bryson Sullivan made two-of-three PAT attempts for the Warriors. With the loss, LFO slips to 1-3 on the season and 0-1 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (3-1, 1-0) hosts a key region matchup with Ringgold next Friday night in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Cass volleyball team split a pair of non-region matches Thursday night in Ellijay. The Colonels outlasted Murray County 27-25 and 25-23 but lost a tough three-set contest with host Gilmer. The host Bobcats won the opening set 26-24 before Cass took the second set 25-19. Gilmer won the tie-breaker third set, 15-7. Alondra Burgos had six kills in the match against Gilmer. Carson Brannon added 15 assists. Tamira Feanny finished with five blocks in the doubleheader for the Colonels. Cass (9-14-1, 0-2) plays at Woodland Tuesday and will also face Calhoun in another region match.

Cartersville overcame a 6-4 deficit through four innings Thursday night for a come-from-behind 13-6 win at Cass. The Lady Canes scored three times in the fifth, sixth, and seventh inning to secure the victory. Kennedy Stevens (3.1 IP, 0R, 3H, 0BB, 2K) picked up the pitching win for Cartersville in relief of starter Ava Perkins (3.2 IP, 6R, 5ER, 3H, 7BB, 4K). Layne Callan (2 RBIs) and Jordan Bishop had two hits each for the Hurricanes. Elizabeth Nelson (RBI), Reese Dumas (RBI), Stevens (RBI), Erin McCrary (RBI), and Campbell Rogers finished with one hit each. Emma Gibson (4 IP, 6R, 4ER, 4H, 4BB, 1K) suffered the pitching loss for Cass. Alexis Woods (2 IP, 7R, 2ER, 5H, 5BB, 1K) and Bailey York (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 1K) also pitched for the Lady Colonels. Reese Howard (2 RBIs) had two hits for the Cass offense. Ansley Hight contributed a double. Haylee Dishmon, Harlee Thomason, and Braelyn Franklin had the other Cass base hits. Woods and York each drove in a run. The loss drops Cass to 7-10 overall and 4-4 in Region 7-5A while Cartersville improved to 9-5-1 overall and 8-1 in the region. Both teams will play tournament games this weekend in the Chattanooga Score International Invitational. WOODLAND 9, DALTON 3 The Lady Cats defeated visiting Dalton Thursday night in Region 7-AAAAA action, 9-3. Woodland led 4-1 after two innings and was up 5-2 when they Wildcats posted four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Dalton added a run in the seventh but pitcher Ashlyn Dowdy got a groundout to end any further threat. Ashlyn Baines (4 IP, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 3K) was the winning pitcher for Woodland. Dowdy (3 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 0BB, 1K) closed out the final three frames. Peyton Dorn had four hits including a double and three RBIs to lead the Lady Cats’ offense. Cambrie Carrington produced three hits including one home run, a double, and three RBIs. Kamryn Smith (RBI) and Jordan Hammonds had two hits each. Bailey Sakacsi (double), Mackenzie Araya, and Alana Carnes (double) added one hit apiece. E Hartsfield was credited with one RBI. The loss drops Dalton to 2-10 overall and 0-7 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (9-8, 5-4) will participate in the Chattanooga Score International Tournament this weekend. COAHULLA CREEK 11, ADAIRSVILLE 2 Adairsville softball lost a region game at Coahulla Creek Thursday evening, 11-2. The Colts led 11-0 through four innings. Adairsville added its runs in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run double by McKenzie Pullam. Megan Gregory had the other Adairsville hit. It was also a double. Gregory (3 IP, 5ER, 4H, 3BB, 2K) was tagged with the pitching loss. Jordan Clay (1 IP, 6R, 0ER, 4H, 0BB, 2K) also pitched. Adairsville (6-9-1, 2-6) hosts Model in a non-region game Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Cartersville volleyball swept non-region matches Thursday night over Rome and North Paulding to improve to 16-11 on the season. The Lady Canes beat Rome 29-27 and 25-17 and also topped North Paulding in straight sets — 25-23 and 25-17. Ailee England and Lauren Lawson had eight kills each in the win over Rome. England also finished with ten digs. Mia Nicklas added 11 digs and Lily Gochee finished with 21 assists against the Wolves. Against North Paulding, England totaled 12 kills while Tennessee Abernathy had seven kills. Gochee contributed 29 assists in the win over the Wolfpack. ADAIRSVILLE VOLLEYBALL SPLITS HOME MATCHES The Lady Tigers volleyball team split a pair of non-region matches Thursday night at home. Adairsville won the opening set with Paulding County 25-22, but lost the second set 25-12 and the deciding set 15-11. The Tigers then bounced back in the next match to top the Hiram Hornets 25-23 and 25-18. Richlyn Blair had six kills in the win over Hiram and finished with 14 on the night. Jordan Hartline had four kills against Hiram. Addie Pearson totaled five kills against Paulding County and Annie McCormick finished with 15 assists in the doubleheader. Adairsville (7-11-2, 1-3) returns to Region 6-AAA play Tuesday at 5 p.m. against Bremen and LaFayette.

Cartersville softball grabbed an early lead Tuesday night at Woodland and held on to defeat the host Lady Cats, 10-6. The Lady Canes led 7-0 in the early going before Woodland scored three runs across the third and fourth innings to make the score 7-3. Cartersville added a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh inning. Woodland threatened in the bottom of the seventh plating three runs of their own, but winning pitcher Ava Perkins got a groundout to end the Lady Cats final frame. Perkins, who homered twice and had four total hits on offense, tossed a complete game in the circle for the pitching win. She scattered ten hits and four walks while striking out six. Jordan Bishop had three hits including a double for the Hurricanes. Mikey Lewis (3 RBIs), Erin McCrary (RBI), and Elizabeth Nelson had the other Cartersville base hits. Elizabeth Hartsfield finished with four hits and two RBIs to pace the Woodland offense. Jordan Hammonds followed with three hits including a double and one RBI. Lady Colonels’ pitcher Alexis Woods was excellent in the circle allowing no runs and just two hits while recording three strikeouts. Ansley Hight homered twice — her seventh and eighth of the season — for four Cass runs. Haylee Dishmon homered, doubled twice, and had four total hits with five RBIs. Braelyn Franklin finished with two Cass hits while Woods (RBI), Reese Howard, Bailey York, and KK Evans added one hit apiece. The loss dropped Hiram to 4-9 overall and 0-7 in the region. Cass (7-9, 4-3) hosts Cartersville Thursday at 5:55 p.m. GORDON LEE 4, ADAIRSVILLE 0 The Lady Tigers suffered a 4-0 home loss Tuesday night without surrendering an earned run. Five Adairsville errors contributed to the region loss. Megan Gregory (6.2 IP, 4R, 0ER, 7H, 3BB, 6K) was tagged with the pitching loss for the Tigers. Jordon Clay (0.1 IP) retired one out in the seventh with a groundout. The visiting Trojans scored a run in the top of the first inning and added two more in the third. The final Gordon Lee run scored in the top of the seventh. The Adairsville offense produced just three hits. McKenzie Pullam, Annalee Morris, and Riley Mounger had one hit each. Gordon Lee improved to 10-2 overall and 4-2 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (6-8-1, 2-5) travels to Coahulla Creek Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch.

Cartersville volleyball defeated Woodland 25-8 and 25-18 then defeated host Calhoun in a tight three set match Tuesday night in Region 7-5A action. Calhoun won the opening set with Cartersville 25-15 but the Lady Canes (14-11, 2-0) won the final two sets 25-19 and 15-9 to win the match. Cass volleyball dropped a straight set decision to visiting Dalton Tuesday night 25-12 and 25-16. The Colonels also had a match with Hiram, but the results were not available at the time of this release. (Results will be added soon.) Adairsville volleyball (7-11-2, 1-3) lost a pair Region 6-AAA matches Tuesday at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. The Tigers won the opening set with LFO 25-15, but fell in the next two sets, 25-18 and 15-10. Richlyn Blair had seven kills for Adairsville. Jenna Claire Hendley finished with four blocks and Annie McCormick had seven assists. Coahulla Creek defeated Adairsville Tuesday 25-17 and 25-16 in straight sets. Jordan Hartline had three kills for the Lady Tigers. McCormick totaled three assists while Jayna Wilson and Sherry Wells combined for 15 digs.

Woodland senior Tyler Jones won the individual boys title Saturday at the Big Peach Mustang Stampede 5K conducted at Allatoona Creek Park in Kennesaw. Jones (16:31.20) finished just over six seconds ahead of Creekview’s Dillon Berger. Seth Grogan of Cherokee was third just over ten seconds behind. The race by Jones helped lead the Wildcats to a sixth place team finish out of 16 teams and 140 individual runners. Parkview won the team competition followed by Creekview, Clarkston, Lovett, and Wesleyan. The other Woodland scoring runners included Drew Thayer (25th, 18.04), Juan Mendoza (39th, 18:25), Landon McSwain (52nd, 18:34), and Kamron Chappell (60th, 18:52). The Woodland girls placed fourth of 14 teams. Parkview won the girls team race followed by Wesleyan and Creekview. The race included 113 runners. Emma Segars (23rd, 21:34) paced the Lady Cats. She was followed by teammates Danielle Thayer (30th, 22:07), Miranda Pelow (31st, 22:08), Olivia Berry (32nd, 22:09), and Abby George (37th, 22:17). Woodland joins Cartersville and Cass next Saturday at Dellinger Park for the Wire2Wire Invitational. At the Carrollton Orthopaedic Invitational Saturday at Carrollton High School, the Cartersville boys placed 16th and the Cass boys were 26th of 39 teams in the Large School Division. The Cartersville girls finished 26th of 30 teams. The races were held on the GHSA state meet course. The boys race included 263 runners while the girls large division included 219 competitors. Pope won the boys large division while McIntosh took the girls large division title. Malachi Vosburgh (11th, 17:38) paced the Cartersville boys. Other scoring runs for the Canes included Hayden Mitchell (84th, 19:35), Barrett Stepp (103rd, 19:58), Micah Sanders (114th, 20:12), and Omar Pina (120th, 20:19). Leonardo Galeana (107th, 20:04) led the Cass boys. Critton Gearhart (140th, 20:34), Adam Brush (169th, 21:00), Adam Pierce (175th, 21:13), and Sawyer Foy (176th, 21:13) rounded out the Colonels runners. Meredith Gaines (126th, 26:05) and Vivi Vest (127th, 26:05) led the Lady Canes. Milena Bihm (161st, 27:25), Violet Earwood (189th, 29:16), and Rileigh Worthan (193rd, 29:27) were the other Cartersville runners. Cass did not field a full team in the girls race, but Irelynn Wilmot (35:26) and Melinda McKinnon (37:09) participated in the large school girls division race. Thursday at Rocky Face in Whitfield County, the Adairsville boys placed 11th of 22 teams in a race that included 170 runners and was won by Cedartown. The Tigers were led by Griffin Bozeman (26th, 20:47). He was followed by Eli Pearson (29th, 20:56), Michael Spinks (69th, 22:26), Dutch Henderson (70th, 22:29), and Cody Teer (126th, 25:41) for Adairsville. The Lady Tigers did not field a team score but had two runners compete in the girls race that involved 113 participants. Callie Viktora placed 29th in 26:35. Caroline O’Kelley was 38th in 27:15. The Adairsville teams will compete next on September 22 at the Wildwood Run in Dalton.

Malachi Jeffries had two rushing touchdowns in the first half with Luke McBride and Kelvin Mitchell adding touchdown runs in the first half for Cartersville as the Class 5A top-ranked Canes blanked the Columbia Eagles Friday night, 42-0, at Weinman Stadium. The shutout was part of the 2022 Senior Night celebration for the Purple Hurricanes. Canes’ freshman quarterback Nate Russell tossed a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jamauri Brice late in the second quarter setting up a running clock in the second half. Jachai Delgado added a rushing touchdown for Cartersville in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, the Canes defense recorded four turnovers in the contest. Turner Ross Abernathy and Chad Lynn picked off Eagles’ passes. Connor Brasfield and Talan Nix both recovered fumbles. Columbia (3-1) lost for the first time this season. The Hurricanes (4-0) host Heritage-Conyers next Friday in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Adairsville Tigers controlled the line of scrimmage for much of Friday night’s skirmish with visiting Cass and the result was a 29-12 win over the Colonels. Cass took the opening kickoff and drove for a 6-0 lead when Mac Nelson scored on a 22-yard touchdown run with 9:17 to go in the opening period. The Colonels missed the PAT kick. On the ensuing possession, Adairsville took the lead with a 65-yard drive that was capped by Ethan Blome’s 55-yard scoring run. Cooper Souders converted the Tigers’ PAT kick to put Adairsville up 7-6 with 7:36 remaining in the first quarter. After both teams scored on their initial possessions, the first half turned into a stalemate. Adairsville missed a 28-yard field goal attempt late in the second quarter sending the teams to the locker room with no further scoring. Cass regained the lead with 4:24 left in the third quarter. Mac Nelson had a 50-yard run in the drive and Jacob McWhorter completed a 13-yard pass to Devin Henderson to help the Colonels reach the three yard line. Nelson punched in a run on the next play to give Cass a 12-7 lead. The Colonels’ two-point conversion pass attempt failed. The Tigers followed with a 61-yard drive to take the lead for good. Several chunk runs by Blome moved the Tigers steadily down the field. Chris Roper added a 15 yard run of his own and finished off the drive with a 4-yard plunge. A two point conversion pass from Roper to Jamarian Pullum gave Adairsville a 15-12 lead with 0:20 left in the third period. Cass drove deep into Adairsville territory early in the fourth quarter but missed a 29-yard field goal attempt. Two minutes later, Blome struck again with a 63-yard touchdown run. Souders’ kick had Adairsville on top, 22-12. The Tigers closed out the game by immediately stopping the next Cass possession. McWhorter’s pass was picked off by Tre Winters and returned to the Colonels’ 19-yard line. A few plays later, Blome scored on a 1-yard run with 3:54 remaining and the Tigers had a 29-12 victory. Adairsville (2-1) travels to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe next Friday night to open play in Region 6-AAA. Cass (1-3) has a bye week before traveling to M.L. King in Atlanta on September 23.

Woodland football dropped a 28-0 decision Friday night in Lindale, falling to the Pepperell Dragons in non-region action. Pepperell’s DJ Rogers had a pair of touchdown runs. Gage Owens contributed a touchdown run and DeMarcus Ragland added a second quarter pick-six for the Dragons’ scores. Owens scored first with a 19-yard run in the first quarter. Ragland returned his interception 46-yards for a touchdown in the second period. Rogers gave Pepperell a 21-0 lead at halftime with a 19-yard jaunt and added a 68-yard touchdown sprint in the fourth quarter for the game’s final points. Pepperell improved to 2-1. Woodland (1-3) has a bye week before traveling into Cobb County September 23 to take on the Osborne Cardinals in a 7:30 p.m. non-region kickoff.

Woodland and Cartersville picked up key region softball wins Thursday evening while Adairsville dropped a region matchup at home with Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. Perkins (5.2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 7BB, 3K) picked up the pitching victory. Stevens (1.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K) earned a save by retiring the final four outs. Rockmart won the opening set 25-23, took the fourth set 25-15, and won the fifth tie-breaker set 15-9. Tamira Feanny had five kills and seven service aces to Cass in the loss.
