Georgia Highlands College softball finished up their four game trip to the Sand Mountain Invitational Saturday by splitting games against Southern Union State and Chattanooga State. The Chargers defeated Southern Union 4-2 but lost to Chattanooga State 7-6. GHC also split games Friday defeating Snead State but falling to Pearl River. In Saturday’s win over Southern Union, three Chargers’ pitchers — Haley Robinson, Katie Traynor, and Maggie Schandera — combined to limit the Bison to just six hits. GHC led 3-1 through five innings and matched sixth inning singles runs for the 4-2 win. Hailey Cronic had three hits in the win including a triple and two RBIs. Robinson and Audrey Johnson followed with two hits and one RBI each. Taylor Justice tripled. Malone Aldridge and Haley Overton added one hit apiece. The Chargers rapped out 13 hits in the loss to Chattanooga State. Cronic compiled three hits including a double. Bradey Tharp (double), Robinson, and Allison Deweese (double) contributed two hits and one RBI each. Kyndal Brown (2 RBIs), Aldridge (RBI), Madison Dennis, and Ansley Todd added one hit apiece. Gracee Ellis pitched six innings in the one-run loss. She allowed five earned runs on eight hits with no walks and recorded one strikeout. Schandera (0.1 IP, 1ER, 3H) retired the final out. Georgia Highlands (6-12) will rematch with Chattanooga State Tuesday at home in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Stars Field in Cassville.

The Georgia Highlands Chargers split a doubleheader Saturday with Wabash Valley College (Illinois) to salvage one game in a three-game weekend series with the Warriors. The series was played at Pickens County High School in Jasper. Wabash Valley handed Georgia Highlands its first loss of the season Friday and won the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, 14-2. The Chargers responded and won the third game of the series, 9-6. Wabash Valley pounded out 16 hits in Game 1 Saturday after banging out 14 hits in the series opener. Chargers’ pitchers slowed down the Warrior offense in the series finale’, allowing just six hits. The Chargers’ Conner Perry (4 IP, 6R, 2ER, 4H, 5BB, 5K) and Cason Rich (3 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 1K) combined on the mound to allow only two earned runs in the GHC win. The two hurlers also combined for six strikeouts. Eric Moore (5 IP, 10R, 7ER, 13H, 0BB, 3K) and Bubba Luke (2 IP, 4R, 2ER, 3H, 2BB, 2K) were the Chargers’ pitchers. David Smith and Zayd Brannigan led the Georgia Highlands offense in Saturday’s doubleheader with three hits each. Smith hit a solo home run and added a double and two RBIs. Brannigan finished the day with a pair of RBIs. Mick Moody (4 RBIs) and Ben Olson had two hits. Ethan Anderson, Max Kops, Parker Poteet, and Caden Smith (RBI, sac fly) contributed one hit apiece. With Saturday’s doubleheader split, Wabash Valley is now 10-3 on the season. Georgia Highlands (17-2) returns to the diamond Tuesday at LakePoint against Roane State CC.

The Cass girls and boys track and field teams both finished fourth Saturday at the six-team Calhoun Yellow Jacket Invitational. Southeast Whitfield won the girls meet with 110 points. Host Calhoun was second with 105.5 followed by Heritage-Catoosa (101.5), Cass (99), Cedartown (98), and Northwest Whitfield (80). Cedartown won the boys competition with 180.3 points. Calhoun was runner-up with 121.5. Heritage-Catoosa (103.8) placed third followed by Cass (103), Southeast Whitfield (86.3), and Northwest Whitfield (61). Purple Hurricanes’ pitchers Caden Carroll and Drew Rothschild combined Saturday to shutout visiting Forsyth Central and the two combined for 14 strikeouts in the process. Carroll started on the mound. He scattered five hits and two walks over the first four innings and struck out seven. Rothschild did not allow a hit and struck out seven over the final three innings. He also walked two. The Cartersville offense took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and added four more runs in the third. Rothschild had two hits including a double and two RBIs. Curt Bonner also had a two hit game with a double. Hank Smith finished with a double and one RBI. Landon Cole contributed a base hit. Harrison Childers and Blake Sutton added one RBI each. The Bulldogs slipped to 0-4 on the year with their loss. Cartersville (3-1) will participate in the 2022 Perfect Game High School Showdown Thursday through Saturday in Hoover, Alabama. The Canes open pool play Thursday at 4:30 p.m. against Sparkman (Ala.) and will face Cherokee County (Ala.) that evening at 7 p.m. MARIETTA 6, WOODLAND 5 Woodland went to extra innings at Marietta Saturday, but came up short when the Blue Devils pushed across a walk-off run in the bottom of the eighth inning with an RBI bunt single. The two teams went to extra innings tied 5-5. Woodland scored a single run in the top of the first and added a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Marietta posted single runs in the first and fifth innings and scored three times in the sixth. Seven Wildcats had one hit each including Jacob Gravett (2 RBIs), Rowan Billings (RBI), Julian Wright (double), Chase Carson, Jakiyon Porter, Ayden Ray, and Conner Stermer. As it turned out, that was enough as pitchers from both teams kept runs off the board from the third inning forward. Jack Rogers picked up the pitching win for Armuchee allowing just one earned run in six innings of work. He walked two and struck out six. Ethan Campbell worked a scoreless seventh to earn a save for the Indians. None of the three runs allowed by the Tigers were earned. Brendan Carroll (4.1 IP, 3R, 0ER, 4H, 1BB, 3K) and Braden Powell (2.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 4K) combined in the loss to strikeout seven. P.J. Weeks had two hits including a double at the top of the Tigers’ order. Tyler Driggers (RBI) and Chris Roper also had two hits for Adairsville. Dawson Craig added one hit. ADAIRSVILLE 1, ARMUCHEE 0 Adairsville’s Jack Whitley scattered four hits and a walk while fanning eight Saturday to shutout Armuchee, 1-0, in the second game of a doubleheader between the two teams. Meanwhile, the Tigers’ offense produced the game’s only run in the bottom of the fourth when Peyton Bowen singled home Braden Powell. Powell had reached after being hit by a pitch and moved to third on a throwing error by the Indians’ pitcher. With the doubleheader split, Armuchee is now 2-4 on the season. Adairsville (2-3) is scheduled to host Trion Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and has a home doubleheader next Saturday at 12 noon against Temple.

After opening the 2022 season with 16 straight wins, the Georgia Highlands Chargers lost Friday to visiting Wabash Valley College (Illinois), 20-7. The game was hosted by GHC at Pickens High School in Jasper. Georgia Highlands led 6-1 through three innings, but the Warriors scored 19 unanswered runs over the next five frames to run away with a win. The Chargers sent five pitchers to the mound in the loss. They yielded 17 earned runs on 14 hits and ten walks while combining for seven strikeouts. The Warriors hit a pair of home runs. Conner Todaro had three hits including a home run for Georgia Highlands. Zayd Brannigan and David Smith also homered in the loss. Wabash Valley improved to 9-2 on the season and Georgia Highlands slipped to 16-1. The two teams will continue their series Saturday with a doubleheader, also at Pickens High School.

Malone Aldridge drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly and a walk-off victory over Snead State. The RBI was set up by three consecutive singles in the inning from Annsley Todd, Katie Traynor, and Madison Dennis of the Chargers. Haley Robinson had two hits including a double and one RBI for Georgia Highlands. Gracee Ellis picked up the pitching win for the Chargers. She tossed all seven innings allowing three earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven. In the loss to Pearl River, the Chargers trailed 3-1 through five innings before narrowing the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the sixth. The Wildcats responded with two more runs in their half of the sixth. GHC scored a run in the seventh, but came up two runs short. Both teams had ten hits in the contest. Aldridge, Robinson, and Taylor Justice pace Georgia Highlands with two hits each in the loss. Robinson’s two hits were doubles. Dennis also doubled for the Chargers. Maggie Schandera (3 IP, 3R, 2ER, 4H, 1BB, 1K) suffered the pitching loss for Georgia Highlands. Katie Traynor (3 IP, 2R, 1ER, 6H, 0BB, 2K) also pitched in relief. Georgia Highlands (5-11) will play Southern Union State and Chattanooga State Saturday as the Sand Mountain Classic continues.

The Cass girls and boys soccer teams lost their Region 7-AAAAA openers Friday night at Calhoun. The Lady Colonels fell 5-2 and the Cass boys were blanked 2-0. The Calhoun girls led 3-1 at halftime in the opener. Morgan Tompkins scored the Lady Colonels’ first half goal. The Lady Jackets added two more goals in the second half while Sheridan Johnson scored the second Lady Colonels’ goal off a penalty kick. The Calhoun girls improved to 2-4-1. The Lady Colonels (1-6-1, 0-1) will host Murray County Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in a non-region match and will host region-foe Cartersville next Friday — also a 5:30 p.m. kickoff. CALHOUN 2, CASS BOYS 0 The Cass boys were shutout at Calhoun Friday night in their region opener, 2-0. Calhoun improved to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Cartersville boys soccer team trailed at Villa Rica at halftime Friday night before scoring three unanswered goals in the second half to take a 4-2 non-region win over the Wildcats. The Canes trailed 1-0 in the first half despite having five breakaway opportunities that went unfinished early in the game. Near the 30th minute, Alex Rios got away from the Villa Rica defense again and slotted the ball between the keeper and post at an awkward angle to knot the score 1-1. The Wildcats scored again just before the intermission to take a 2-1 lead into the half. The Canes took control in the second half. Hector Galaviz scored for the Canes to tie the game 2-2. The goal came off a deflection from a Yosavanni Pineda shot that the Villa Rica goalie could not handle. Keeping up the pressure, Cartersville’s Melvin Velasquez was taken down from behind in the box leading to a penalty kick goal that gave the Hurricanes a 3-2 lead. Antonio Garcia added the final Cartersville goal off a deflected shot from Kaden Anderson. The Canes took 21 shots on the night with 14 on frame. Cartersville (3-4-1) returns to the pitch Tuesday at Sandy Creek and will travel to Cass Friday. Both games are 7:30 p.m. starts. VILLA RICA 4, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 2 Visiting Villa Rica improved to 8-1 on the season Friday night with a 4-2 win over the Lady Canes. Cartersville (1-5-1) plays at Sandy Creek Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

The Adairsville girls soccer team bounced back from a loss at Rockmart earlier in the week to shutout visiting LaFayette Thursday night in Tiger Valley, 2-0. Kaylee Jordan scored for the Lady Tigers in the 25th minute off an assist from Gabi Becerra. Arthur Leffler found the net with the Tigers goal. “We have a young team,” said Adairsville coach John Terrell. “Nine of our eleven starters are underclassmen, but we are improving each game as we gather more experience. We’ve got to learn how to play with a winning attitude and maintain our effort for an entire game. We look good in stretches but still haven’t put together a complete game. We’re still learning how to deal with adversity and how to control our actions during adverse situations.” Adairsville (3-4, 1-1 Region 6AAA) will host North Murray Tuesday night when the Tigers recognize and honor their senior players.

The Woodland Wildcats won their third game of the season Thursday night, defeating the McEachern Indians 4-3. Meanwhile, the Cass Colonels won for the first time this season collecting a 6-2 victory over Armuchee at LakePoint. Also at LakePoint, Adairsville dropped a 5-3 decision to Coosa. WOODLAND 4, McEACHERN 3 The Wildcats collected a 4-3 win over Class 7A McEachern Thursday in non-region action. The two teams matched single runs in the fourth inning before Woodland took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth. McEachern answered with a pair of runs in the fifth but the Wildcats held on across the final two frames for the victory. Both teams finished with five hits. Jakiyon Porter had two hits for the Wildcats. Julian Wright contributed a hit and one RBI with a sacrifice fly. Jacob Gravett doubled. Chase Carson added a hit and Jackson Rutledge drove in one run for Woodland. Ayden Ray (4 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 4K) picked up the pitching win as the Woodland starter. Coby Barrett (3 IP, 2R, 0ER, 3H, 2BB) earned a save by retiring the final nine outs. The loss dropped McEachern to 3-4 on the season. Woodland (3-1) plays a doubleheader at Marietta Saturday at 2 p.m. CASS 6, ARMUCHEE 2 Carson Hill earned a pitching victory on the mound and had two hits including one RBI to help lead the Colonels to their first win of the 2022 season at home Thursday night over Armuchee, 6-2. Cass took a 3-0 lead through three innings and added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Armuchee’s two runs came in the top of the seventh. Hill went four innings in his pitching start allowing no runs on one hit with no walks. He struck out six. Connor Jenkins (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 3BB, 1K), Devan Hutchinson (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 1K), and Aidan Larkin (1 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) pitched in relief for the Colonels. Larkin (RBI), Jesiel Moctezuma, Cayden Roberts (RBI), Hayden Cole (double), and Bentley Markley finished with one hit each for Cass. The loss drops Armuchee to 1-3 on the season. Cass (1-4) hosts Heritage-Rockdale Friday at 5:55 p.m. COOSA 5, ADAIRSVILLE 3 The Adairsville Tigers dropped a 5-3 decision to Coosa Thursday night in a game played at LakePoint in Emerson. The Tigers out hit the Eagles seven to four in the loss. Coosa built a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth and added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Adairsville posted two runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth inning. Evan Sanders (4.2 IP, 4R, 2ER, 4H, 4BB, 6K) was tagged with the pitching loss. Jack Nelson (2.1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 0H, 0BB, 6K) pitched in relief for the Tigers. Jack Whitley had two hits including a triple and one RBI for Adairsville. Sanders contributed a double and one RBI. Brenden Carroll finished with a hit and one RBI. P.J. Weeks, Tyler Driggers, and Peyton Bowen had the other Adairsville base hits. Coosa improved to 2-2 on the season with their win. Adairsville (1-2) hosts a doubleheader with Armuchee Saturday starting at 12 noon.

Pitchers from both Cartersville and Etowah were dominant for most of the evening Thursday night at Richard Bell Field. In fact, the two teams had combined for only three hits in the regulation seven innings and only combined for four hits after eight innings. Both teams scored twice in the ninth inning to continue extra innings before the visiting Eagles scored five times in the top of the 12th inning for an eventual 7-4 win. Etowah took a 2-0 lead in the top of the ninth on a two-run single by Jordan Fricks, but Cartersville answered immediately. The Canes responded with RBI singles by Caleb Daniel and Elliott Eastin to knot the score 2-2. On the Eastin hit, Daniel was cut down at home plate for the final out of the ninth sending the game deeper into the night. In the top of the 12th, Etowah utilized a double, three singles, a walk, and a hit batsmen to compile their five runs. Drew Rothschild produced a two-out, two-run hit in the bottom of the inning, but the rally ended there. Geoffrey Gore (3.2 IP, 5R, 4ER, 5H, 2BB, 6K) was saddled with the pitching loss for the Hurricanes after entering in relief in the ninth inning. Colt McKibben (4 IP, 0R, 0H, 3BB, 2K) was the Cartersville starter. Ryan Johnson (4 IP, 2ER, 2H, 4BB, 7K) and Cal Goss (0.1 IP) also pitched. Daniel finished with three hits including a double and one RBI. Eastin had two hits and one RBI. Smith contributed two hits including a double. Rothschild drove in two runs with one hit. Harrison Childers and Blake Sutton added one hit apiece. Etowah improved to 3-1. Cartersville (2-1) hosts Forsyth Central Saturday at 1 p.m.
