Canes complete sweep of Woodland; Cass, Adairsville drop region road contests

There was plenty of local high school baseball action Friday night.

Class 5A third-ranked Cartersville swept a doubleheader with region rival Woodland at Richard Bell Field, winning 12-3 and 15-0.

In Roswell, Cass lost both games of a doubleheader at Blessed Trinity 14-0 and 8-1 as the Titans remained unbeaten in region action.

Also, the Adairsville Tigers suffered their first region loss of the season at Murray County, 4-3.


GAME 1: CARTERSVILLE 12, WOODLAND 3


Jake Brasfield contributed a pair of hits and two RBIs in the Canes 12-3 win Friday night over Woodland.

After Woodland took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning, Cartersville tallied ten runs in their next two offensive frames to pull away with a 12-3 win.

Caleb Daniel had three hits for Cartersville including a double and one RBI. Drew Rothschild finished with two hits and three RBIs. Jake Brasfield totaled two hits with two RBIs. Curt Bonner hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Harrison Childers (3 RBIs), Elliott Easton (RBI), and Jacob Ray (triple) added one hit each for the Purple Hurricanes.

Jakiyon Porter had two hits for Woodland including a double and one RBI. Mason Williams had two hits. Chase Carson had one double and one RBI. Julian Wright contributed one hit and one RBI while Ayden Ray added one hit for the Wildcats.

Caden Carroll (4.2 IP, 3ER, 6H, 2BB, 6K) collected the pitching victory for the Canes. Phillip Schiltz (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 3K) retired the final four outs.

Hunter Shirley (5 IP, 8ER, 8H, 2BB, 3K) was charged with the pitching loss for Woodland. Coby Barrett (0.2 IP, 6ER, 3H, 2BB) also pitched for the Wildcats.



GAME 2: CARTERSVILLE 15, WOODLAND 0

Colt McKibben allowed only one hit and a pair of walks Friday night in the Canes four-inning 15-0 win over Woodland.

Cartersville pitcher Colt McKibben limited Woodland to only one hit and a pair of walks across four innings in Friday night’s second game to defeat the Wildcats 15-0.


The Canes’ southpaw surrendered a double off the bat of Woodland’s Julian Wright in the fourth inning. McKibbon issued walks in the second and fourth innings and needed only 56 pitches to work through the four frames.

Cartersville finished with seven hits, five walks, and took advantage of seven Woodland defensive errors. The Canes also swiped five bases.

Elliott Eastin was the only Hurricane with two hits. He also had one RBI. Harrison Childers had a triple with two RBIs. Hank Smith managed a double with two RBIs. Drew Rothschild drove in two runs with one hit. Caleb Daniel and Blake Sutton added the other Cartersville base hits.

Wright (2 IP, 12R, 6ER, 7H, 3BB, 3K) started on the mound for Woodland and was tagged with the loss. Nate Rosser (1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 0H, 2K) and Tore Foss (0.0 IP, 2ER, 2BB) also pitched for the Wildcats.

Woodland (7-11, 0-6) travels to Hiram to begin a three-game region series Tuesday at 5:55 p.m.

Cartersville (11-3, 4-0) opens a three-game series at Blessed Trinity Tuesday at 5:55 p.m.


GAME 1: BLESSED TRINITY 14, CASS 0

Three Blessed Trinity pitchers combined on a five-inning no hitter Friday night in Roswell to blank the Cass Colonels, 14-0.

Justice Haynes struck out six in three innings. Porter Buursema and Sean Wylie fanned two each in one inning of work apiece for the Titans.

Haynes produced two hits including a triple and three RBIs for the Blessed Trinity offense. Max Puckett hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning. Michael Zito, Kade Kisz, and Cole Harof drove in a pair of runs each.

Cayden Roberts (2 IP, 3ER, 3H, 1BB, 1K) suffered the pitching loss for the Colonels. Chase Botts (0.0 IP, 2ER, 0H, 3BB), Connor Jenkins (1 IP, 5ER, 1H, 5BB), and Chris Cabe (1 IP, 4ER, 2H, 2BB) all pitched in relief for Cass.


BLESSED TRINITY 8, CASS 1

More dominant pitching by Blessed Trinity in Game 2 of Friday’s doubleheader in Roswell carried the Titans to an 8-1 win over Cass.

Three Blessed Trinity pitchers — Luke Flading, Ethan Chernik, and Parker Spring — combined to limit the Colonels to only two hits and four walks while striking out eleven.

Todd Gaddy singled in the fifth inning for the Colonels and Cayden Roberts led off the seventh with the only other Cass hit. Roberts later scored on a groundout by Jesiel Moctezuma.

Cooper Milford and Michael Zito had two hits each for the Blessed Trinity offense. Kade Kisz, Zito, and Milford combined to drive in six of the Titans’ eight runs.

Carson Hill (3.2 IP, 4ER, 4H, 3BB, 5K) started on the mound for Cass and was tagged with the pitching loss. Hayden Cole (1.1 IP, 3R, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) and Aidan Larkin (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 3BB) also pitched for the Colonels.

Sixth-ranked Blessed Trinity improved to 12-6 overall and 6-0 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (4-14, 3-3) starts a three-game region series at fifth-ranked Calhoun Tuesday at 5:55 p.m.


MURRAY COUNTY 4, ADAIRSVILLE 3

Adairsville fell behind early Friday night and ultimately lost a one-run decision at Murray Countty for the Tigers’ first region loss of the year.

The host Indians took a 3-0 lead in the first inning with Adairsville narrowing the margin to 3-2 in the top of the fourth. Murray added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth that proved to be the decisive run. Adairsville added a run in the sixth to make it 4-3 but would get no closer.

Braden Powell (3.1 IP, 3ER, 3H, 2BB, 4K) was saddled with the pitching loss for Adairsville. Jack Nelson (2.2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 5K) also pitched in relief for the Tigers.

Brenden Carroll, who drove in Adairsville’s first run in the fourth inning with a groundout, also drove in the Tigers’ sixth inning run with a double. Jack Whitley also forced in an Adairsville fourth inning run with a groundout.

P.J. Weeks and Landon O’Neal had the other Adairsville base hits.

With the two-game series split, Murray County’s season record improved to 2-11 overall and 1-5 in Region 6-AAA.

Adairsville (8-5, 3-1) plays region foe Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe at home Tuesday at 5:55 p.m.
