The Cartersville High School wrestling team earned a fourth place finish Saturday at the 15-team North Atlanta Warrior Classic in the Paces neighborhood. Sonoraville won the event with 193.5 points followed by Lumpkin County and Lovett. Putnam County placed fifth, more than 50 points behind the Canes. Cartersville had four individual champions and four others to place in the top four of their respective weight divisions. Eaiden Neal (113), Talan Nix (132), Giles Turner (138), and Jackson Latimer (145) each won their brackets. Grant Adams (106) was a tournament runner-up. Houston Knott (170) placed third while Grey Williams (126) and Jamie Altuzar (220) both finished fourth. The Canes return to the mats Thursday in Rome against Armuchee and Trion before traveling to Chattanooga for the McCallie Classic Friday and Saturday.

The Adairsville High School wrestling team went 4-1 and captured third place overall at the Cherokee Bluff Duals Saturday in Flowery Branch. The Tigers picked up head-to-head victories over Madison County, Hart County, Dublin, and North Hall during the competition. Adairsville's lone loss was to Oconee County. Jaxson Owens (120-pounds) had a perfect 5-0 day for Adairsville. Jett Johnson, who split time in the heavyweight division with Luke Story, was 2-0 on the day. Next for the Tigers is a road match at Hiram Wednesday night before hosting Model and Cartersville Friday and heading to the Dragon Duals at Pepperell High School Saturday.

The Cass High School wrestling team finished third Saturday in the 2021 Southern Slam Invitational hosted by Eastside High School in Taylors, South Carolina just outside Greenville. The tournament, which ran Thursday through Saturday, was won by Georgia’s Woodward Academy with 189 points. The host school edged out the Colonels 175.5 to 173.5 in the battle for second and third. Two more Georgia schools, Archer and Buford rounded out the top five teams in the 35-team tournament. The Colonels had three individual weight division champions in the event and three other wrestlers to place. Cole Hunt (120-lbs.), Jake Crapps (126), and Bryce Kresho (138) each won individual titles. Tyler McKnight was the runner up at 145-pounds. A.J. Piatt (113) placed third and Zach McKnight (170) earned a seventh place finish.

Following three straight wins to open the 2021-22 season, the Woodland boys basketball team dropped a back-and-forth matchup with Bremen Saturday at home, 66-58. The visiting Blue Devils led by two points after a tight first quarter and held a narrow 31-30 advantage at the intermission. Bremen (1-2) extended its lead to 50-43 heading into the final period and that was enough to hold off Woodland in the fourth quarter. Diaz Garrett led Woodland with 19 points. Brelace Williams scored 14 and Harlin Morris added 11 for the Wildcats in the defeat. Jayden Hames contributed eight points. Woodland (3-1) entertains the Temple Tigers Tuesday night, travels to Bremen Friday, and hosts Pepperell Saturday afternoon. BREMEN 54, WOODLAND GIRLS 42 The Bremen girls improved to 5-1 on the season Saturday afternoon with a 54-42 non-region win at Woodland. The loss dropped Woodland to 0-6 on the season. The Lady Cats precede the boys' games Tuesday at home against Temple, Friday at Bremen, and back home Saturday afternoon against Pepperell.

The Cartersville girls and boys basketball teams split a pair of non-region games Saturday at Cedartown with the Lady Canes falling to the Lady Bulldogs 44-31 but the boys team holding on late for a 63-62 victory in Polk County. Kam Callahan and Romo Pace led the Hurricanes in their fourth consecutive win with 21 and 19 points, respectively. Luke Gambill contributed seven points. Jamauri Brice, Jaeden Scott, Kaden Scott, and Kedrick Chatmon added four points each for the Canes. Cartersville led 18-12 after one quarter; 33-26 at halftime; and 45-38 at the end of the third quarter prior to holding on in the final period for a one-point win. M.J. Holiday led Cedartown (0-1) with 26 points. Xavier Holiday followed with 10. Cartersville (4-1) plays at Dalton December 17. CEDARTOWN 44, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 31 Cedartown took control early and never trailed Saturday afternoon as the Lady Bulldogs defeated visiting Cartersville 44-31. Cedartown (1-0) led 13-4 at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to 23-7 at halftime. Cartersville outscored Cedartown in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit. Makayla Jordan led the Lady Bulldogs with 24 points Cartersville got 10 points from Layne Callan; eight by Ansley Griffin; and six by Taff Bradley. Cartersville (1-3) travels to Dalton Friday, December 17.

T.J. Printup had a 20-point second half and scored 28 in the game Friday night as the Adairsville Tigers pulled away at Rockmart for a 71-48 Region 6-AAA victory. Kavi Harris and Tre Winters finished with 13 points each for the Tigers and Tre Mitchell knocked down 11 as Adairsville placed four players in double-figure scoring. A stingy defensive effort in the second half led to the region win. Adairsville led 19-16 after one quarter and 33-27 at halftime. The Tigers extended their lead to 51-42 in the third quarter and pulled away in the final eight minutes, outscoring the host Yellow Jackets 20-6. Treylin Davis paced Rockmart (2-1) with 13 points. Adairsville (2-0) returns to region action Tuesday night at Ringgold. ROCKMART 48, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 42 The Adairsville girls struggled in the third quarter Friday night and suffered their first loss of the season at Rockmart, 48-42. The Lady Tigers held a 12-8 lead after one quarter and were ahead 18-14 at halftime before the Yellow Jackets took control in the third quarter outscoring Adairsville 18-4 for a 32-22 advantage. Analee Morris led Rockmart (1-2, 1-0) with 18 points. Lexie Childers scored 16 for Adairsville. Autumn Henderson and Ya’Torrean Hale followed with nine and eight points, respectively. The Lady Tigers (4-1, 0-1) return to Region 6-AAA action Tuesday at Ringgold.

The Cartersville Hurricanes improved to 3-1 on the season Friday night with a 68-49 win at the Storm Center over Dalton. Kam Callahan scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Canes. Jaeden Scott and Romo Pace followed with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Cartersville led 21-15 after the opening eight minutes and extended their lead to 34-29 by halftime. Dalton cut the lead to 51-45 by the end of the third quarter before Cartersville pulled away in the final period for a 19-point win. Anthony Dans led the visiting Catamounts with 13 points. Will Haley scored 11 for Dalton (0-1). Cartersville travels to Cedartown Saturday. The Lady Canes will tip at 1:30 followed by the Canes and Bulldogs at 3 p.m. WOODLAND BOYS 51, PEPPERELL 43 The Woodland boys basketball team remained unbeaten to start the 2021-22 season Friday night with a 51-43 win at Pepperell. The Wildcats held slim leads at the end of the first three periods and held on in the fourth quarter for an eight-point win. Woodland led 18-14 at the end of the first quarter; 23-19 at the intermission; and 37-34 heading into the final period. Diaz Garrett led the Wildcats with 17 points and added five assists. Jayden Hames followed with 13 points. Harlin Morris pulled down eight rebounds and had seven points. Brelace Williams finished with seven rebounds, six points, and three assists. Kalvarri Smith led Pepperell (0-3) with 11 points. Woodland (3-0) hosts Bremen Saturday in a 1 p.m. start. ALEXANDER 66, CASS BOYS 37 The Cass boys fell behind 21-12 in the first quarter Friday night at Alexander and never recovered in a 66-37 loss in Douglasville. The host Cougars extended their lead to 37-19 by halftime and led 61-30 heading into the final eight minutes. Alexander improved to 3-0 with their victory. Cass (2-3) will look to snap a two-game skid at Heritage-Conyers Tuesday night.

In a trip to Douglasville Friday night, the Class 5A ninth-ranked Cass girls outdistanced host Alexander 20-4 in the third quarter to break open a close game and eventually pull away for a 64-35 win over the Lady Cougars. Miya Winston led the Lady Colonels with 20 points. Keara McDaniel scored nine. Claire Davis pumped in eight points while Mikaela Jackson and Amaya Ford contributed six each. Katlin Gould was the high scorer for Alexander (1-5) with 10 points. Cass (5-1) travels to Conyers to take on Heritage Tuesday night. PEPPERELL 53, WOODLAND GIRLS 38 Gabi Smith scored 16 points and Aysia Day added 12 as the Pepperell Lady Dragons defeated visiting Woodland Friday night in Lindale. Woodland trailed 10-7 after one quarter, but grabbed a 24-19 advantage heading into halftime. Pepperell regained the lead 34-32 by the end of the third period and pulled away down the stretch for a 15-point non-region win. Abigail Taylor led the Lady Cats with 16 points. Morgan Echols and Dylynn Motes scored seven each for Woodland. The Lady Cats (0-5) host Bremen Saturday in an 11:30 a.m. start.

The Excel Christian Academy boys basketball team took an early lead Thursday night against visiting Pepperell and extended their lead in each period on their way to a 62-39 non-region win over the Dragons. The Eagles led 14-8 at the end of the initial period and held a 28-16 advantage at the intermission. Excel extended its lead to 48-21 after three quarters on the way to a 23-point win. Jakaden Barkley led Excel and all scorers with 27 points. He added five rebounds, five assists, and three steals for the Eagles. Jacob Taylor scored 19 points with five assists and four steals. Elijah Payne contributed a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds for the Eagles. Payne also blocked six shots. Elliott Gogins was the top scorer for Pepperell with eight points. Gage Owens added six for the Dragons (0-2). ECA (3-2) hosts Harvest Baptist Academy next Thursday night and will play at Cornerstone Prep Academy Saturday, December 11.

Local teams won five of eight games during a full slate of high school basketball games Tuesday night. The Adairsville girls and boys teams won easily at Dalton Academy while the teams from Cass, Cartersville, and Woodland split varsity contests. The November 2021 Elite Athlete of the Month representing Cartersville High School is Brylie Bohn. A junior and the daughter of Casey and Angie Bohn, Brylie is a member of the Hurricanes’ varsity competition, varsity football, and varsity Game Day cheerleading squads. This competition season, the Canes won a third consecutive region championship and placed fourth at the state championships. “Brylie leads by example and always goes the extra mile,” said Cartersville coach Breanna Johnson. “She continuously displays a great attitude at practices and in the classroom,” continued coach Cissi Adams. “It is her strong work ethic that makes her such a great cheerleader, a strong student, and a wonderful future teacher,” the coaches continued. “She is a blessing to have on our cheerleading teams.” A member of Future Georgia Educators, Bohn plans to attend a four-year university and pursue a degree in Early Childhood Education. The Cass High School Elite Athlete of the Month for November 2021 is Jackson Hyde. A senior offensive lineman for the Colonels’ football team, Hyde received Honorable Mention All-Region 7-AAAAA recognition this past season despite battling through multiple injuries. The coaching staff noted that even during his injuries, Hyde made practice every day and further exhibited his leadership and hunger to improve ultimately leading to his return for the end of the season and the state playoffs. He is the son of Jackson and Shannon Hyde. Stella Rood is the November 2021 Elite Athlete of the Month for Adairsville High School. Rood is a ninth grader, a main base on the Tigers’ competition cheerleading squad, and a member of the Adairsville tennis team. “Stella is a phenomenal athlete and teammate,” noted head cheer coach Kaylie Noe. “She is always kind, hard-working, and gives her best. She keeps a positive and uplifting attitude even in the most frustrating of times. She’s a true joy to coach.” Currently a 4.0 GPA student in Honors and Advanced Placement courses, Rood plans to attend Kennesaw State University. Woodland High School’s Elite Athlete of the Month for November 2021 is Emma Seagars. A junior and daughter of Amanda and Jake Segars, she is a member of the Lady Cats’ cross country team, track and field team, and swim team. Segars earned a sixth place individual finish at the Region 7-AAAAA Cross Country Championships this season and had a strong top-30 performance at the 2021 State Championships. Segars set personal bests this season and improved greatly. “Emma is a talented and hard working young lady,” said Woodland cross country coach Catherine Bollwerk. “She is a leader for her teams and community. She never gives up and earns every accomplishment through her dedication and drive. She is well deserving of this honor.” Segars is a member of the Cross Country Leadership Committee, FCA Leadership, Bartow Leadership, WHS Athletic Leadership Committee, and a Bartow County High School Top 10 Elite Runner. Former Cartersville High School quarterback Trevor Lawrence had one of his best performances of his 2021 rookie NFL season Sunday, but the Jacksonville Jaguars came up just short against the visiting Atlanta Falcons. In college football action, a pair of local specialists helped their teams advance in the NCAA FCS playoffs. Long snapper Jacob Potter and the Kennesaw State Owls along with John Scifers and the UIW Cardinals won their first round playoff games Saturday. Meanwhile, former local basketball athletes -- DiAnthony Heathcock, T.J. Horton, Josie Summerville, and Nakiyah Washington -- were all in recent Thanksgiving Week action. NFL TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (Rookie season, Cartersville HS) … the NFL’s overall No. 1 draft pick had the Jaguars 82 yards from tying the score Sunday with 2:14 remaining in the game, but the Atlanta defense forced four incompletions in a row as the Falcons (5-6) held on for a 21-14 win. Lawrence finished 23-for-42 passing for 228 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He also had five rushes for 39 yards. The rookie quarterback’s interception was thrown on Jags’ second series of the game and the Falcons took a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter on a pair of Cordarrelle Patterson touchdown runs. Lawrence guided a 14-play, 70-yard drive late in the half that led to a 22-yard field goal. The 6-6 signal-caller’s 7-yard touchdown pass came with 0:22 remaining in the third quarter and was followed by a two-point conversion completion to James O’Shaughnessey cutting the Atlanta lead to 21-11 at the time. Lawrence orchestrated a 74-yard, 14-play drive in the fourth quarter that resulted in a 34-yard field goal. Jacksonville (2-9) plays at the Los Angeles Rams (7-4) Sunday afternoon. COLLEGE FOOTBALL CHRIS BLACKSTON — University of West Georgia (Sr., Adairsville HS)… finished with a season-high six tackles, five of them solo in the Wolves 66-35 NCAA playoff loss at No. 1 Valdosta State Saturday. The fifth-year senior also added one quarterback hurry. West Georgia finished the season with a 9-3 record. TREY CREAMER — UNC Charlotte (R-Sr., Cartersville HS)… made a pair of tackles and blocked a second quarter field goal attempt but the 49ers lost at Old Dominion 56-34. The loss was the third straight for Charlotte to finish the season 5-7. Creamer finished the year with 26 tackles, 1.5 for loss, seven pass breakups, and a forced fumble. JONATHAN CRUZ — UNC Charlotte (Sr., Cartersville HS)… made all four of his PAT kicks and made a pair of fourth quarter field goals from 39 yards and 44 yards Saturday in the 49ers’ loss at Old Dominion. Cruz also booted four of seven kickoffs for touchbacks. For the season, Cruz made 9-of-13 field goals with a long of 56 yards.
