Georgia Highlands softball racked up another doubleheader sweep Tuesday afternoon and won its ninth straight game defeating South Georgia State 9-1 and 6-1 at Stars Field in Cassville. Montana Ledbetter hurled a five inning, no hitter in the first game win and recorded her 100th strikeout of the season. Ledbetter walked three and gave up one, unearned run in the victory while recording nine strikeouts. On offense, nine Georgia Highlands batters had at least one hit as the Chargers finished with 11 total hits including two home runs. Allison Daffron hit one home run and finished with two hits and two RBIs. Kyndal Brown also had two hits including one double. Lacey Rutledge homered driving in two runs. Natalia Herrera, Haley Overton, and Taryn Hitchcock contributed a double and one RBI each. Madison Bennett and Bradey Tharp had the other Chargers’ hits. In the second game, Chargers pitcher Maggie Schandera scattered six hits and a pair of walks while allowing just one run in a six inning start. Gracee Ellis worked a clean seventh inning to close out the win. Ansley Todd had two hits including a double and three RBIs. Natalia Herrera drove in two runs with one hit. Lacey Rutledge (triple), Hailey Cronic (double), Bradey Tharp, Madeline Hairston, and Hannah Bobo added one hit each. South Georgia State falls to 4-22 for the season and 3-17 in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association play with the two losses. Georgia Highlands (17-18, 12-8) will look to continue their hot streak in a doubleheader Saturday at ABAC and Sunday at South Georgia State.

The Adairsville boys team is in third place and the Adairsville girls are fourth after one day of competition in the Region 6-AAA Track and Field Championships at Rockmart High School. Rockmart leads both the girls and boys standings with Coahulla Creek and Sonoraville also in the top four girls and boys teams along with the Tigers. The region finals for the running events will continue Wednesday at Rockmart. Adairsville athletes qualifying for the region finals included: Tre Mitchell (400M, 200M), Amya Arnold (100M, 200M), Aliya McBryde (100M, 100M Hurdles, 200M), Tokyo Gordon (110M Hurdles), Callie Viktora (800M), Christian Gough (800M), Keyonce Pitts (200M), Kayli Hilburn (300M Hurdles), and Noah Matthews (300M Hurdles). The field event finals were completed Monday with the top four placers qualifying for the Class AAA State Sectionals May 8 at Lakewood Stadium in Atlanta. Adairsville’s State Sectional qualifiers included Kayli Hilburn and Skylar Caudill in shot put, Tre Mitchell and T.J. Printup in high jump, and Dylan Matthews in long jump.

The Cartersville gymnastics team came away from the GHSA State Preliminary Meet Friday at Buford with a 14th place finish. While neither Canes competitor qualified for the Class AA-AAAAA State Championship meet on Saturday, freshman Karley Garrison did claim 14th place in the All-Around preliminaries including a 12th place in the floor exercise and 15th place on bars. Garrison scored 33.475 in the All-Around, 8.925 in floor, and 8.375 in bars. The other Cartersville competitor was sophomore Annaston Wilson who qualified for the State Preliminaries in floor exercise. Wilson scored 8.6 in last Friday’s competition. “The competition was steep and our ladies held strong,” said Cartersville head coach Kimberly Mosteller. “I am proud of all the work the girls have done this year and looking forward to next season to grow this program. We have some incredible talent here in Cartersville and I am honored to lead them.”

Georgia Highlands College softball won both games of a doubleheader Sunday at Andrew College winning 7-5 and 8-4. The Chargers built a 7-1 lead by the third inning of the first game and held on behind a solid pitching performance by starter Maggie Schandera. The second game was more of a back-and-forth battle with both teams holding early leads but heading into the fifth inning tied 4-4. Georgia Highlands posted four runs in the sixth inning to take the lead for good and an 8-4 victory. Chargers pitcher Madalyn Morton picked up the second game win in the cirlcle by working the final five innings. She allowed only one unearned run on two hits and a walk while fanning five. Madison Bennett and Madeline Hairston led the GHC offense in the doubleheader with three hits each. Bennett scored two runs and drove in three. Hairston scored one run. Ansley Todd had a pair of doubles on the day with five RBIs. Hailey Cronic finished with two hits including a double and one RBI. Both Todd and Cronic scored one run. Izzy Marcotte hit a home run with three RBIs. Natalia Herrera (2 RBIs), Taryn Hitchcock, Allison Daffron, Bradey Tharp (RBI), and Hannah Bobo added one hit apiece. With the two losses, Andrew fell to 9-39 on the season and 2-18 in the GCAA. Georgia Highlands (15-18, 10-8) will host a doubleheader with South Georgia CC Tuesday and travel to ABAC Saturday and South Georgia State Sunday to complete the regular season.

The Cartersville boys tennis team were beneficiaries of the GHSA Universal Coin Toss for 2021 Spring Sports this week and will host their Class AAAAA state quarterfinal match against Coffee Wednesday. The universal coin toss determines the host team when equal seeds meet in the quarterfinals and beyond for GHSA sports. Cartersville and Coffee are both region champions from Region 7AAAAA and Region 1AAAAA, respectively. The two teams will square off Wednesday at Dellinger Park on Courts 1-5 at 4 p.m. according to Canes’ coach Brett Tolbert. The Cartersville/Coffee winner will advance to the state semifinals and will host the Starr’s Mill/Grady winner. The other two quarterfinal matches in Class AAAAA include St. Pius at Woodward Academy and North Springs at McIntosh.

The Adairsville Tigers lost their final game of the 2021 season Friday at home, falling to Rockmart 8-1. The visiting Yellow Jackets took a 3-1 lead in the third inning and the score stayed that way until the sixth. Rockmart added three runs in the top of the sixth and two more in the seventh for their seven-run win. Rockmart pitcher Trevor Caldwell threw a complete game allowing only one unearned run on three hits and one walk. He struck out twelve. Kyler Smith, Evan Sanders, and Braden Powell had one hit each for the Tigers. Sanders (3 IP, 3R, 1ER, 4H, 2BB, 4K) started on the mound and took the pitching loss. Brenden Carroll (2.2 IP, 3R, 2ER, 3H, 2BB, 3K), Grayson Belcher (0.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1K), and Elijah Padgett (1 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB, 2K) all pitched for Adairsville. The Woodland girls finished second and the Cartersville boys were third as the top placing local teams at the Region 7-AAAAA Track & Field Championships Monday and Thursday at Calhoun. Blessed Trinity won the girls region title with 173.5 points. Woodland was second with 133.5 followed by Calhoun (106), Cartersville (85), Cass (83), and Hiram (54). Calhoun won the boys region championship with 176 points followed by Blessed Trinity (173), Cartersville (119), Hiram (85), Woodland (50), and Cass (45). The Adairsville Tigers banged out thirteen hits Thursday night and pitchers Jack Whitley and Dawson Craig combined for a two-hitter and an 8-2 Region 6-AAA win at Rockmart. Whitley (6.2 IP, 2R, 1ER, 2H, 4BB, 7K) struck out seven in the first 6-and-2/3 innings. Craig (0.1 IP, 0R, 0H) retired the final out in the seventh inning to close out the win. The Tigers took a 4-0 lead in the first two innings and added two additional runs in both the fifth and seventh innings. Rockmart managed two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a string of walks and a passed ball before Craig ended the threat by inducing a ground out. On offense, Craig had three hits and three RBIs for Adairsville. Kyler Smith drove in a pair of runs with two hits. Logan Hunt finished with two hits and one RBI. Conner Crunkleton contributed two hits. Evan Sanders (RBI), P.J. Weeks, Braden Powell, and Chris Roper added one hit apiece. The Cartersville boys tennis team swept all three singles lines Thursday at Dellinger Park to defeat Northview 3-2 in the Sweet Sixteen round of the GHSA Class 5A state playoffs. Luke Kottemann and Jackson Cline at Line 1 and Line 3 singles, respectively, won in straight sets. Kottemann won 6-2, 6-4 and Cline won by a 6-2, 7-5 score. Luke Gambill won his Line 2 singles match in come-from-behind fashion. After falling 6-1 in the opening set, Gambill captured the next two sets 6-2, 6-2 to secure the Canes third point. The two Cartersville doubles lines — Nate McDonald/Robert Novak and Banks Wilson/John Paul lost in straight sets. McDonald/Novak fell 6-2, 6-2 on Line 1. Wilson/Paul lost 6-3, 6-1. Cartersville advances to the state quarterfinal round where they will square off with the Northgate / Coffee winner. The site and date will be determined with the match to be played by April 29.
