The Adairsville Tigers held leads of 1-0 in the second inning and 4-2 in the fourth inning at Murray County, but a five-run fifth inning lifted the host Indians to a 7-4 win Wednesday night in Chatsworth. The Tigers out hit Murray County, 10 to 4, but Adairsville left base runners in scoring position in three different frames and committed three defensive errors that led to five unearned runs. Elijah Padgett (5 IP, 7R, 2ER, 4H, 5BB, 8K) was tagged with the Adairsville pitching loss. Wade Dooley (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB) closed out the sixth inning for the Tigers. Logan Hunt and Braden Powell had two hits each for Adairsville. Kyler Smith drove in two runs with a double. Padgett added a double. Connor Crunkleton and Brenden Carroll contributed one hit and one RBI each. Evan Sanders, Chris Roper, and Padgett added one hit each. Murray County improved to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (6-7, 1-2) will host the second game in this series Friday at 5:55 p.m.

The Adairsville and Cass soccer teams split games Tuesday night at Cochran Stadium with the Lady Tigers winning a hard fought 1-0 decision and the Colonels rolling to a 10-0 win. Megan Hardin scored in the 30th minute with an assist from Cat Wheeler for the only net finder in the girls game. Wheeler tapped the ball around the goalkeeper and Hardin finished off the goal. Adairsville keeper Annie McCormick was credited with a critical stop to keep the Lady Tigers ahead. She deflected a high ball to hit the cross bar and ultimately made the save. The Adairsville girls improved to 11-1 for the season and will return to Region 6-AAA play Thursday at home against Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. The loss drops the Lady Colonels to 5-8 on the season. The Lady Colonels will host Woodland Friday at 5 p.m. in a game likely to decide the final state playoff spot from Region 7-AAAAA. CASS BOYS 10, ADAIRSVILLE 0 Kaleb Speights scored four goals and had two assists on goals to power the Cass Colonels past visiting Adairsville Tuesday night in non-region action. Braxton Benham and Christian Viella had two goals and two assists each. Alfred Chege scored a goal and assisted on two more. Omar Garcia also scored a goal and added one assist. The Cass boys improved to 8-5 for the season and will host Woodland Friday night at 7 p.m. in a key Region 7-AAAAA game determining state playoff seeding.

Michah Earwood tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout Tuesday night to lead 3rd-ranked Cartersville to a 6-0 Region 7-AAAAA win over Woodland at Richard Bell Field. Earwood issued a first inning walk with two outs and that baserunner reached third base after an infield error, but that would be as close as the Wildcats would come to scoring. Blake Sutton gave Cartersville a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an infield single and RBI. Curt Bonner made it 2-0 in the second inning with an RBI single and the Canes carried that lead until the bottom of the fifth when they struck for four more insurance runs. Hank Smith and Colt McKibben had the only base hits in the four-run inning. A pair of Woodland errors, a sacrifice fly off the bat of Elliott Eastin, and a dropped third strike/wild pitch contributed to the scoring. Woodland starter Ayden Ray (2 IP, 2R, 1ER, 3H, 2BB) suffered the pitching loss despite allowing only one earned run. Drew Billings (4 IP, 4R, 1ER, 5H, 5K) worked the final four frames for the Wildcats, striking out five. Jakiyon Porter, Jacob Gravett, and Ray had one hit each for Woodland. The Wildcats fall to 5-12 overall and 1-6 in region play. Cartersville (11-5, 6-1) will travel to Woodland Friday to complete the three-game series in a doubleheader scheduled for 5 p.m. BLESSED TRINITY 9, CASS 0 A six-run third inning helped lift 2nd-ranked Blessed Trinity to an eventual 9-0 win over visiting Cass Tuesday night in Roswell. The Titans led 1-0 after one inning before adding six runs in the third and two more in the fourth inning. Titans’ pitcher D.J. Radke went five innings and Jackson Seng closed out the final two on the mound. The two limited Cass to only two hits and three walks. They combined for 11 strikeouts. Matt Shook had both Cass hits. Blessed Trinity (12-6, 6-1) travels to Cass (6-10, 5-2) for a doubleheader Friday.

The Woodland girls and boys tennis teams lost to Blessed Trinity Tuesday by identical 5-0 final scores. The Lady Cats’ Line 1 doubles team took their Titans opponents to three sets before falling 6-2, 3-6, 1-6, but the remainder of the Woodland competitors fell in straight set decisions. Woodland hosts Cartersville Thursday and will entertain Adairsville Friday afternoon.

Sewanee became one of the last collegiate programs in the South to begin their baseball season, but former Cartersville High hurler Logan Martin made sure Friday's debut was worth the wait. After teammate Jake Pendergraft tossed three no-hit innings to open the game, Martin entered in the fourth and followed suit. The right-hander finished off the combined no-no with six innings of nearly flawless pitching. Martin walked three but struck out six in his hitless frames, leading Sewanee to a 2-0 win over Covenant College. For his efforts, the sophomore earned Southern Athletic Association pitcher of the week recognition. Elsewhere, two-time high school state champion Stephen Smith took first place in the men's pole vault Friday during the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Georgia Tech. PRO BASEBALL Sam Howard (Pittsburgh Pirates; 8th-yr pro; Cartersville HS) — Howard made his fifth relief appearance of the spring training schedule Friday and was tagged with the loss as the Pirates dropped an 11-9 decision to the Baltimore Orioles. Howard entered in the seventh inning and allowed a one-out single. He induced a fly out for the second out, but Cedric Mullins followed with a two-run home run that gave Baltimore an 11-9 lead. The former Georgia Southern Eagle southpaw finished the frame with a strikeout. He has a 3.60 ERA this spring in five innings with five strikeouts. Opponents have been limited to a .111 batting average against him. COLLEGE BASEBALL Mason Barnett (Auburn So., Cartersville HS) — Barnett suffered his first loss of the season in a start Saturday at fourth-ranked Ole Miss. Barnett was touched for six runs, four earned, on five hits and a pair of walks by the Rebels. He also hit a batter and struck out four in his three innings of work. Auburn scored three runs late to make it close but lost 6-5. The right-hander is 2-1 for the season with a 2.18 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings pitched. Auburn (11-8, 0-3 SEC) was set for a home game with South Alabama Tuesday night and to host Kentucky in a three-game conference series Friday through Sunday. Clifton Dempsey (Toccoa Falls, Sr., Cartersville HS) — Dempsey went 2-for-5 with a double, a walk and two runs scored in a home doubleheader Saturday against Talladega College. Dempsey also stole a base. The Screamin’ Eagles split the doubleheader, losing 2-0 and winning 6-4. Toccoa Falls (9-13) was scheduled to host Truett McConnell Tuesday and a three-game series with Carolina University Friday and Saturday. Jake Gooch (Central Alabama CC So., Cartersville HS) — In a four-game, home-and-home series with Calhoun CC, Gooch was 5-for-11 at the plate with a pair of doubles and eight RBIs. He also walked three times. Gooch now has 24 RBIs in 25 games and has a .354 batting average. CACC (16-12, 5-3 ACCC) was set to play at Wallace-Dothan CC Tuesday and play a four-game, home-and-home conference series with Bevill State CC Thursday and Saturday. Lane Griffith (West Georgia Sr., Adairsville HS) — Griffith went 5-for-13 with a double and three RBIs in a three-game series against West Alabama Saturday and Sunday at home. West Georgia (10-9, 10-8 Gulf South Conference) hosts sixth-ranked Georgia College Wednesday and has a three-game home series Friday and Saturday with Lee University. Brycen Jones (Central Alabama CC Fr., Cartersville HS) — Jones made a sixth-inning appearance Friday in the Trojans’ 5-2 loss to Calhoun CC. He allowed a hit and a walk, and he struck out one in the scoreless appearance. Logan Martin (Sewanee Fr., Cartersville HS) — Martin was part of a combined no-hitter Friday with starter Jake Pendergraft, as the Tigers opened their season by blanking visiting Covenant College 2-0. Martin worked six no-hit innings of relief Friday to earn the pitching win. The right-hander walked three and struck out nine, facing 22 batters. As a result, Martin earned Southern Athletic Association pitcher of the week. Sewanee (1-2) was set to entertain Covenant College again Tuesday and host a pair of doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday with eighth-ranked Birmingham Southern. Steven Spell (Young Harris So., Cass HS) — Spell entered as a defensive substitution and played second base in the Mountain Lions’ 23-3 win over Claflin Saturday. Young Harris (10-6, 10-5 Peach Belt Conference) was scheduled to play a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at Union (Tennessee) and host sixth-ranked Georgia College in a three-game conference series Friday and Saturday. Preston Welchel (Coastal Alabama-Bay Minette Fr., Cartersville HS) — Welchel went 1-for-10 at the plate and scored two runs in a four-game, home-and-home conference series with Wallace State-Dothan CC last Friday and Saturday. BASKETBALL Justice Hayes (South Georgia Tech Fr., Cass HS) — Hayes compiled three points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal in three games last week, when the Jets went 1-2. DiAnthony Heathcock (Columbia International Fr., Woodland HS) — CIU finished 1-2, placing sixth, in the National Christian College Athletic Association national championship in Winona Lake, Indiana. Heathcock had seven points in a 79-72 opening-round loss to Alice Lloyd on Wednesday. During a 79-64 win over Southwestern Christian Thursday, he scored two points and grabbed two rebounds before fouling out. Heathcock posted eight points and two boards in an 87-68 defeat to Lancaster Bible College Friday. T.J. Horton (Georgia Highlands Fr., Cartersville HS) — In two games, Horton totaled seven points, six rebounds and two assists, as the Chargers recorded a pair of three-point wins. SOCCER Russell Shealy (Syracuse R-So., Cartersville native, Darlington HS) — Shealy recorded his first shutout of the season, making three saves over 110 minutes, in earning Syracuse a scoreless draw with North Carolina Saturday at home. SOFTBALL Colbi Ballard (Shorter So., Cartersville HS) — Ballard started all three games of a weekend series at Mississippi College and went 1-for-5 at the plate with one walk. The Hawks lost all three games in the series. Shorter (4-16, 0-12) hosts Georgia Southwestern Wednesday in non-conference action and will entertain Auburn-Montgomery in a three-game conference series Friday and Saturday. Alexa Varner (Shorter Fr., Adairsville HS) — Varner appeared as a pinch-runner in the fourth inning of Saturday’s 10-0 loss at Mississippi College. TENNIS Houston Medlock (Piedmont Jr., Adairsville HS) — In a road match Friday at USA South-foe Brevard, Medlock cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win on Line 1 singles and contributed to an 8-1 triumph on Line 2 doubles. While he came up short in an 8-6 decision in doubles action Sunday at Pfeiffer, Medlock downed his singles opponent 6-3 in both sets. Bryce VanOrder (Piedmont Fr., Woodland HS) — VanOrder dropped just one game in a dominant showing on Line 2 singles in what became a 9-0 victory over Brevard. Two days later, he eased to a 6-2, 6-3 win in a 7-2 triumph over Pfeiffer in nonconference action. TRACK AND FIELD Parker Breedlove (Reinhardt So., Cartersville HS) — Competing in the 10000-meter race, Breedlove finished 14th in 34 minutes, 38.79 seconds last week at Columbia International. Stephen Smith (Kennesaw State So., Cass HS) — Smith won the pole vault, topping out at 4.70 meters, Friday during the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Georgia Tech. The Georgia Highlands Chargers completed a doubleheader conference sweep of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Tuesday evening at LakePoint winning 7-2 in the opener and 6-2 in the second game of the twin bill. GEORGIA HIGHLANDS 7, ABAC 2 A three-run third inning gave Georgia Highlands a 4-2 lead and the Chargers added on late runs for a 7-2 conference win in the opener. Conner Perry (6.2 IP, 2ER, 7H, 1BB, 5K) pitched into the seventh inning to earn the win. Garrett Sagro (2.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 2K) closed out the contest for the Chargers. Brandon Prince had three hits including a pair of doubles at the plate for GHC. Connor Todaro also had three hits and one double. Joe Sutton finished with a double and three RBIs. Mick Moody, Palmer Sapp, and David Smith (double) all had one hit and one RBI each. Trace Twardoski (double) and Trenton Parker added one hit apiece. GEORGIA HIGHLANDS 6, ABAC 2 In the second game, Joe Sutton and Trace Twardoski homered while Chase Townsend scattered six hits and struck out six as the Chargers completed the doubleheader sweep, 6-2. The sweep also extended the current Chargers’ winning streak to 14 games. Sutton hit a solo shot in the first inning for a 1-0 lead and Twardoski added his solo home run in the fifth inning for the Chargers’ final run of the game. Another key blow for the GHC offense was a two-run double by David Smith that broke a tie in the third inning and put the Chargers ahead to stay at 3-1. Palmer Sapp and Twardoski both added RBI singles in the third as the Chargers built a 5-1 advantage. Max Kops, Ben Olson, and Connor Todaro added one hit each in the win. The Adairsville Tigers scored four runs in the top of the first and added plenty of scoring late in a five-inning, 21-1 Region 6-AAA win Tuesday night at North Murray. The win earned a season split with the Mountaineers who won Friday’s matchup at Adairsville, 4-0. Tuesday night, the Tigers pounded out thirteen hits but also took advantage of eight walks by North Murray pitchers and six errors by the Mountaineers’ defense. Adairsville pitchers Jack Whitley (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 2K) and Brenden Carroll (2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 3H, 1BB, 1K) split the pitching duties and limited the hosts to no earned runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Logan Hunt had three hits including a triple and one RBI. Evan Sanders contributed a pair of hits and five RBIs. Braden Powell added two hits and one RBI. Elijah Padget totaled one hit and three RBIs. Tyler Driggers, Connor Crunkleton, and Carroll all finished with one hit and one RBI each. The Cartersville girls and boys soccer teams lost their first Region 7-AAAAA games of the season Monday night facing Blessed Trinity at Weinman Stadium. Squaring off against the top-ranked girls team in Class AAAAA, the Lady Canes fell by a 9-0 final score. The Cartersville boys lost a 4-2 decision. The Canes (7-2-1, 3-1) are scheduled to play Northwest Whitfield Tuesday and Calhoun Friday to close out region play. The Lady Canes (6-4-1, 3-1) also travel to Calhoun Friday.

The Cass Colonels’ offense rolled up nine runs early Monday night at home, then held on over the final four innings for a 9-4 win that completed a three-game region series sweep of Hiram. Cass starting pitcher Jayden Smith earned the pitching victory with five innings of work. He allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits and three walks while striking out ten. Chase Botts (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 3K) and Aidan Cottingim (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2K) worked one inning each to close out the Colonels’ win. Carson Hill hit a three-run home run in the home half of the first inning to start the scoring for Cass. Nic Wallin had two hits including a double and three RBIs. Bentley Markley contributed two hits including a double and one RBI. Matt Ballas also had a pair of hits. Matt Shook drove in two runs with a double and Jordan Gani added one hit as the Colonels collected nine total hits. The loss drops Hiram to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (6-9, 5-1) opens a three-game region series with Blessed Trinity Tuesday in Roswell and the Colonels will host the 2nd-ranked Titans Friday.

The Woodland girls tennis team defeated Hiram Monday night, 3-2, in Region 7-AAAAA action. The boys team fell by a similar 3-2 score. The Cass boys track and field team won the 10-team Ronnie McClurg / Dalton Rotary Invitational Saturday hosted by Dalton High School. The Colonels totaled 102 points to finish ahead of the host Catamounts (89), Heritage-Catoosa (87), Model (82.5), and Woodland (74) in the top five. Northwest Whitfield (71), Signal Mountain (Tenn.) (59.16), Cleveland (Tenn.) (54.33), Gilmer (27), and Coahulla Creek (16) rounded out the team scoring. Cass sophomore Jashaun Brown Whatley was named the event's high point winner for the invitational. He took first in the 110M hurdles, 300M hurdles and was on the winning 4x100 relay team. Brown-Whatley was also fourth in the long jump. In the girls meet, Woodland placed fourth with 89 points and Cass was seventh with 53.5. Dalton (121) won the girls title followed by Signal Mountain (101) and Cleveland (98).
