  • Lady Canes' gymnasts secure state preliminary qualifying scores

    March 7, 2026 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com The Cartersville High School Lady Canes gymnastics team showed continued growth and resilience at the Cherokee Invitational on Friday in Canton. Competing against several Class 5A and Class 6A programs—including Cherokee, River Ridge, Etowah, Woodstock, Roswell, Lassiter, North Atlanta, and Kell—the Lady Canes posted a solid team score of 95.900, good for sixth place overall in the competitive field. The team delivered strong individual performances, particularly on vault. Senior Emerie Elrod continued her impressive season, securing another state preliminary qualifying score with a 9.10 on vault. Freshman Ellie Kate Jones also shone brightly, earning a 9.15 on vault—marking her second state preliminary qualifying score of the season. Head coach Kimberly Mosteller expressed pride in the team's ongoing progress. "I'm really proud of how the girls are continuing to improve and compete against bigger programs," Mosteller said. "These meets give us invaluable experience as we build toward the postseason.” The Lady Canes return to action soon when they host their next meet on Saturday at Cartersville Twisters Gym. Competition begins at 9:30 AM, with matchups against River Ridge High School, South Forsyth High School, and Bremen High School. The home event will double as Senior Recognition Day, where the team will honor its senior gymnasts for their contributions throughout the season.

GAME 1: DALTON 9, CASS 3 GAME 2: DALTON 13, CASS 7 The visiting Dalton Catamounts swept a doubleheader at Cass on Friday night and completed a three-game series sweep of the Colonels. Dalton posted a six-run top of the second inning in the first game that included two walks, three hits, two wild pitches, and a two-run home run by Dalton’s winning pitcher, Charles Chappelle (5 IP, 1R, 0ER, 4H, 1BB, 6K). Noah Rogers (1.2 IP, 6R, 2ER, 3H, 2BB, 4K) made the pitching start for Cass and was charged with the loss. Easton Lee (3.1 IP, 1ER, 4H, 0BB, 1K) and Andrew Ray (2 IP, 2R, 1ER, 1H, 2BB, 1K) pitched in relief. Maddox Koontz (RBI) and Cooper Rampley had two hits for the Colonels. Landon Lamb, Dawson Warner, and Aidan Castaneda each contributed one hit. Dustin Wallin added on RBI on a sacrifice fly. A similar result in the second game saw Dalton score five runs in the top of the first inning and never trail. The Catamounts plated eight additional runs across the fifth through seventh innings. Cass scored two runs in the first and five in the sixth. Dustin Wallin (4.2 IP, 9R, 5ER, 6H, 0BB, 7K) made the Colonels’ pitching start and worked into the fifth inning on the mound. GAME 1: CEDARTOWN 7, WOODLAND 2 GAME 2: CEDARTOWN 15, WOODLAND 0 The Cedartown Bulldogs’ pitching staff limited host Woodland to only four hits in a doubleheader on Friday and completed a regular-season sweep of the Wildcats, 7-2 and 15-0. Woodland only trailed 4-2 through four innings in the opening game on Friday, despite generating only three hits in the game. The visiting Bulldogs sealed the contest with three additional runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Clayton Wilkes (4 IP, 6ER, 8H, 0BB, 2K) made the pitching start for Woodland in the opener and was charged with the loss. Zaylen Cochran (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 5BB, 4K) and Levi Wheeler (0.1 IP) also pitched for the Wildcats. Grant Tidwell (double, RBI), Tommy Risner, and Cochran each had one hit for Woodland. In Friday’s second game, Cedartown sent 17 batters to the plate and scored 12 runs in the top of the fourth inning to blow the game open. The Bulldogs had eight hits in the frame and took advantage of three walks and three errors. Risner had the only hit for Woodland. Tidwell (3.1 IP, 10R, 6ER, 9H, 1BB, 5K) and Kason Miller (0.2 IP, 5R, 3ER, 3H, 2BB, 1K) pitched in the Game 2 loss.  Cedartown improved to 5-3 overall and 3-0 in Region 7-AAAA. Woodland (5-6, 0-3) opens a three-game region series with Southeast Whitfield at home on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The two teams will play a Friday doubleheader in Dalton. CALHOUN 5, ADAIRSVILLE 3 The host Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 4-1 lead on Friday evening and held off the Tigers 5-3 to take the rubber game of a three-game Region 7-AAA series. Adairsville scored single runs in the first, third, and sixth innings, but trailed the entire game after Calhoun posted three runs in the bottom of the first and added single runs in the second and fifth. Kaden Coker (5.1 IP, 5R, 4ER, 8H, 3BB, 3K) suffered the Tigers’ pitching loss after working into the sixth inning. Evan Hardin (0.2 IP) retired the final two outs of the sixth on the bump. Hudson Parr (RBI) and Westin Barfield led the Adairsville bats with two hits apiece. Tyler Parker, Coker, and Hardin each added one hit. Matthew Cook contributed one RBI. Calhoun improved to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in region action. Adairsville (9-4, 1-2) begins a three-game Region 7-AAA series on Tuesday by hosting Gilmer at 5:30 p.m. The Tigers will visit the Bobcats on Thursday and host the third game of the series on Friday.

  • Hurricanes win five-team meet at Rockmart

Photos: Cartersville HS Athletics The Cartersville High School girls and boys track and field teams each won a five-team meet on Thursday at Rockmart High School. The Lady Canes (78 points) finished ahead of host Rockmart (51) and Paulding County (51). Hiram (46) was fourth, followed by South Paulding (24). The Cartersville boys (124) dominated their competition, with Paulding County (40) and Hiram (35) taking second and third place, respectively. South Paulding and host Rockmart finished with 33 points. Actavious Thompson won the long jump and triple jump, and was on the winning 4x400 and 4x200 relay teams on March 5.   • Lady Tigers kick off region slate with a win

    March 5, 2026 The Adairsville Lady Tigers opened Region 7-AAA play in dominant fashion Thursday night, defeating the Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins 5-0 at Northwest in Tunnel Hill. Adairsville wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Alexa Damer netted the first goal in the ninth minute off an assist from Addi Jerauld, giving the Lady Tigers an early 1-0 advantage. Damer struck again late in the first half, scoring in the 37th minute on an assist from Alivia Joslin to extend the lead to 2-0. That score held through halftime as Adairsville controlled play. The Lady Tigers quickly added to their lead after the break. Joslin scored in the 41st minute off an assist from Damer to make it 3-0. Damer completed a hat trick just four minutes later, finding the net in the 45th minute on an assist from Ella Edwards. Adairsville capped the scoring in the 51st minute when Caelynn Disbrow scored off Joslin’s second assist of the night. Defensively, the Lady Tigers preserved the shutout behind goalkeeper Bethany Kilgore, who made a key save in the second half to maintain the clean sheet. Chikondi Banda later entered goal and played the final 20 minutes. Adairsville head coach Dave Sexauer credited Gracie Cash and Emma Edwards for their outstanding defensive play and also noted that Ella Edwards had her best game of the season. With the victory, Adairsville improves to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in Region 7-AAA. Northwest Whitfield falls to 3-4-1 overall and 1-1 in region play. The Lady Tigers return to action Tuesday when they travel to Calhoun. NORTHWEST WHITFIELD 10, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 0 The host Northwest Whitfield Bruins blanked the Adairsville boys soccer team 10-0 on Thursday night in Tunnel Hill. The Bruins improved to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in Region 7-AAA. Adairsville (0-6, 0-1) returns to action on Tuesday at Calhoun in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

  • Tigers walk off with 4-3 win in region thriller

    March 5, 2026 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com Adairsville’s Tyler Parker delivered the decisive blow Thursday night, doubling home the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Tigers a dramatic 4-3 walkoff victory over visiting Calhoun. Colton Sanford, who entered as a pinch runner after Hudson Parr drew a walk, crossed the plate with the winning run to cap the comeback. The win evened the Region 7-AAA series at one game apiece after Calhoun took the opener 6-3 on Tuesday. Adairsville held a 3-1 lead through three innings, but the Yellow Jackets fought back with single runs in the sixth and seventh to force extra innings. Parker earned the pitching victory in relief, working two shutout innings after Parr’s strong seven-inning start. Parr allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, with no walks and eight strikeouts. Parker gave up just one hit and one walk while striking out one. Offensively, Parker paced the Tigers with three hits, including two doubles and two RBI. Evan Hardin added two hits and one RBI, while Westin Barfield and McCayden Hufstetler each chipped in one hit. Adairsville improves to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in Region 7-AAA. Calhoun falls to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in the region. The teams will conclude the series on Friday at Calhoun, with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Adairsville has a three-game region series next week against Gilmer, beginning on Tuesday at home.

  • Undefeated Northeast Alabama CC blanks Chargers

    March 4, 2026 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com Georgia Highlands College softball lost both games of a home doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the unbeaten and nationally third-ranked Northeast Alabama CC Mustangs 4-0 and 10-0. Northeast Alabama starting pitcher, Addie Edwards, recorded eight strikeouts and tossed a complete-game one-hitter in the first game. The Mustangs then used a trio of pitchers in the circle in the second game and again limited the GHC offense to just four hits. Emily Ferro (6 IP, 4R, 3ER, 9H, 1BB, 2K) and Athens Hudson (1 IP, 0R, 0H) pitched for the Chargers in the opening loss. CeCe Williams (1.2 IP, 5ER, 3H, 3BB, 1K) and Hudson (5.1 IP, 5R, 3ER, 8H, 2BB, 2K) pitched for Georgia Highlands in Game 2. Anslee Logan had the only Chargers hit in the first game. Emma Darrow (double), Gracie Azpeitia, Williams, and Logan had one hit in the second game. Northeast Alabama CC improved to 18-0 on the season. Georgia Highlands (8-10, 1-1 GCAA) hosts a conference doubleheader with Gordon State College on Sunday at 1 p.m.

  • Woodland soccer sweeps to wins over Cedartown, Adairsville girls blank Dragons

    March 4, 2026 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com The Woodland Wildcats picked up a solid Region 7-AAAA victory Tuesday evening, defeating the Cedartown Bulldogs 4-1 at Wildcats Stadium in Cartersville. Cedartown struck first, scoring in the 11th minute to take an early 1-0 lead. The Wildcats responded before halftime, with Aiden Carrillo equalizing in the 35th minute on an assist from Luis Sanchez, sending the teams into the break tied at 1-1. Woodland took control after the intermission. In the 43rd minute, Marvin Morales converted a free kick to give the Wildcats a 2-1 advantage. They added insurance in the 53rd minute when Abel Pineda finished off a free kick assist from Hunter Limbaugh for a 3-1 lead. The Wildcats sealed the win with a late goal in the 78th minute, as Danny Chavez scored off an assist from Aiden Carrillo. Goalkeeper Seth Goodall was sharp in the net for Woodland, making seven saves to preserve the victory and limit the Bulldogs' opportunities. The win improves Woodland's record to 4-2 overall, and 1-0 in Region 7-AAAA play. Cedartown falls to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the region. The Wildcats hit the road for their next matchup, traveling to Dalton to face the Catamounts on Friday at 7:30 p.m. LADY TIGERS BLANK PICKENS, 6-0 The Adairsville Lady Tigers delivered a dominant performance on the road, shutting out the Pickens Lady Dragons 6-0 in a girls' high school soccer matchup played in Jasper. Adairsville built a commanding 3-0 lead by halftime, setting the stage for a convincing victory. Sam Gough opened the scoring in the 17th minute, finishing off an assist from Braylynn Martin. Addi Jerauld doubled the advantage in the 29th minute with an assist from Ella Edwards. Alexa Damer made it 3-0 in the 35th minute, connecting on a pass from Martin. The Lady Tigers kept the pressure on in the second half. Martin scored in the 48th minute off an assist from Alivia Joslin to push the lead to 4-0. Joslin added to the tally in the 62nd minute, assisted by Jerauld. Damer completed the scoring in the 68th minute with a penalty kick for the final 6-0 margin. Adairsville assistant coach Amanda Jones praised the team's strong passing game throughout the contest. Coach Jones also highlighted the leadership of Samantha Gough, who excelled in communication and directing the flow of the game, particularly on the Tigers' counterattacks. The win improves Adairsville's overall record to 5-1. Pickens drops to 4-1 overall with the loss. The Lady Tigers return to action with their next match at Northwest Whitfield on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. WOODLAND LADY CATS WIN REGION OPENER The Woodland Lady Cats earned a clean-sheet shutout victory Tuesday evening, blanking the Cedartown Lady Bulldogs 4-0 in a Region 7-AAAA girls soccer matchup at home. Woodland carried a 1-0 lead into halftime and then pulled away in the second half, adding three more goals to secure the convincing win. The shutout improves Woodland's record to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in Region 7-AAAA play, giving the team an early foothold in the region standings. Cedartown, despite entering the match with a strong 4-1 overall record, falls to 0-1 in region action with the loss. Woodland will look to build on the momentum when it hits the road for its next contest, traveling to face Dalton on Friday at 5:30 p.m. CARTERSVILLE SOCCER TEAMS FALL AT ALLATOONA The Allatoona Buccaneers swept a Region 7-AAAA doubleheader Tuesday against Cartersville, with both the girls' and boys' teams posting shutout victories on the Buccaneers' pitch in Acworth. In the girls' matchup, the Allatoona won 5-0, after erupting for four goals in the first half. Junior Helen Leaming stepped in as goalkeeper for the second half and delivered an impressive performance, allowing only a single goal—and that coming from a penalty kick. Her effort helped steady the team and energize a more physical, determined Cartersville side after the break. Lady Canes' coach, Mary Beth Popham, said that "Despite the 5-0 final, the match was far more competitive than the scoreline suggests," said Lady Canes' coach Mary Beth Popham. "The girls played with grit, intensity, and resilience from whistle to whistle, showing clear growth and fight throughout the contest." The win moves Allatoona to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in Region 7-AAAA play. Cartersville falls to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the region with the loss. The Lady Canes will look to rebound when they travel to face Cass on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The boys' game followed a similar script, as the Buccaneers blanked the Purple Hurricanes 6-0. Allatoona led 4-0 at halftime and added two more in the second half. The victory improves Allatoona's record to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in Region 7-AAAA. Cartersville drops to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in region competition. The Purple Hurricanes are next in action at Cass on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

    March 3, 2026 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com The Cass Lady Colonels dominated on the road Tuesday night, defeating the Southeast Whitfield Lady Raiders 4-1 in a Region 7-AAAA girls soccer matchup in Dalton. The Lady Colonels struck first in the opening half, with Amy Villanueva netting the game's opening goal off an assist from Ryland Piatt with 32:49 remaining before halftime. That 1-0 lead held into the break, setting the tone for a strong second-half performance by Cass. Cass exploded for three more goals after the intermission.  Nat Hughes doubled the advantage with 36:27 left, again courtesy of a pinpoint assist from Piatt. Zoe Bailey made it 3-0 at the 17:34 mark, finishing off a feed from Villanueva. Vanne Garcia capped the Lady Colonels’ scoring with 4:31 to play, converting a pass from Chloe Hunt to push the lead to 4-0. Southeast Whitfield managed a late consolation goal with just 2:00 remaining, but it was too little, too late. Cass coach Kyle Calandra commended the back line that was impenetrable for most of the contest. Hayleigh McGeehan, Shania Hernandez, Willow White, and Fatima Lopez turning in a solid defensive effort. In midfield, Gracey Nash, Jillian Silva, and Gisselle Sanabria controlled the tempo, winning key battles and distributing effectively to fuel the attack. “It was a balanced team effort,” added Calandra. “Tonight was a true collective win built on strong defense, creative midfield play, and some nice finishes up top.” Southeast Whitfield slipped to 1-7 overall and 0-1 in region play. Cass (2-3, 1-0) hosts Cartersville on Friday at 5:30 p.m. SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 5, CASS BOYS 1 The host Raiders took an early 2-0 lead and held off the Cass Colonels for a 5-1 Region 7-AAAA victory Tuesday night in Dalton. Southeast Whitfield scored in the 9th and 15th minutes to build a 2-0 advantage. Anthony Diaz scored off an assist from Tabo Mwandu with just over ten minutes remaining in the first half to narrow the margin to 2-1 at the break. The second half belonged to the Raiders, however, as they added three more goals to pull away.  Southeast Whitfield improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in region action. Cass (3-2, 0-1) hosts Cartersville for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on Friday.

  • Lady Canes topple Titans to reach the Class AAAA Final Four

    March 3, 2026 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com Zoe McCurry scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds Tuesday as the Lady Canes advanced to the Class AAAA Final Four. The Cartersville Lady Canes defeated the visiting Northview Titans 64-51 Tuesday night at The Storm Center, advancing the program to the GHSA Final Four for the second time in three years. Cartersville raced to an early lead, then held off a third-quarter threat before taking control in the fourth quarter. The Lady Canes led 22-8 after one quarter and 40-22 at halftime. Northview charged back in the third quarter by outscoring Cartersville 19-6, but the Hurricanes responded with an 18-10 final eight minutes for the victory. Columbus State signee Kaytlin Arnold paced Cartersville with 20 points, including 17 points in the first half and three buckets from behind the arc. Zoe McCurry scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Trinity Montgomery also produced 13 points with six boards and five assists. Blakely Morris contributed nine points. Reese Gibson pitched in seven, and Akira Leonard added two points for the Canes. Kelly Reynolds and Erin Hobbs led Northview (18-13) with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Cartersville (24-5) advanced to the Class AAAA state semifinals to play Marist (27-2) at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Akins Arena in Athens. The War Eagles defeated North Oconee 63-49 on Tuesday in their quarterfinal game. The other Class AAAA semifinal will be Kell (24-5) against Jones County (25-5) on Saturday in Athens at 1 p.m.  Kell topped Dalton 52-41 on Tuesday, and Jones County defeated Creekside 48-34.

CARTERSVILLE 5, ALLATOONA 0 Georgia Southern signee and right-hand pitcher Nate Russell tossed a complete game one-hitter on Tuesday night to lead the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes to a 5-0 shutout win over visiting Allatoona. Russell walked three, hit one batter, and struck out 12 of 25 batters faced. Nolan Elrod contributed an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning for a 1-0 Cartersville lead, and the score stayed that way until the sixth. The Canes took advantage of three walks, an Allatoona error, two hits, and a sacrifice fly to plate four insurance runs in the sixth inning to secure the Region 7-AAAA win. Clint Hosea had two hits, including a double and two RBI, for Cartersville. Brant Rutledge and Brayden Logan each added one hit. David Vargas contributed one RBI with a sacrifice fly. Allatoona (3-4, 0-1) will host a doubleheader with Cartersville (3-7, 1-0) on Friday, starting at 5 p.m. DALTON 10, CASS 6 The Colonels rallied for five runs in the final two innings at Dalton on Tuesday night, but could not overcome an early 10-1 deficit, losing their Region 7-AAAA opener to the Catamounts. Dalton scored in each of the first five innings to build a big lead, although Cass outhit the Catamounts twelve to eleven. Cane Woods and London Cox led the Dalton offense, combining for six hits and seven RBI. Woods homered twice, tripled, and doubled with four RBI. Cass starting pitcher Dustin Wallin (2.1 IP, 8R, 6ER, 7H, 2BB, 5K) took the loss on the mound. Landon Farmer (1.2 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB, 1K) and Andrew Ray (2 IP, 1ER, 3H, 0BB, 1K) pitched in relief. The Wildcats regained the lead at 6-4 in the top of the second, and Cedartown scored seven runs in their next two frames to build an 11-6 lead. Logan Smith (4 IP, 2R, 1ER, 2H, 0BB, 3K) was tagged with the pitching loss for the Wildcats in relief of starter Blake Forstie (0.2 IP, 4ER, 4H, 1BB), and reliever Brylon Reynolds (1.1 IP, 6R, 5ER, 6H, 1K). CALHOUN 6, ADAIRSVILLE 3 Adairsville scored three runs in the top of the first inning Tuesday evening at Calhoun, but the Yellow Jackets responded with six unanswered runs over the first five frames to beat the Tigers 6-3. The Adairsville defense committed five errors that contributed to three unearned runs, and the Tigers’ pitchers issued seven walks in the loss. McCayden Hufstetler (3 IP, 5R, 3ER, 6H, 4BB, 2K) made the pitching start for Adairsville and was saddled with the loss. Westin Barfield (1.1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 3BB, 3K) pitched in the middle innings, and Tyler Parker (1.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 3K) retired the final five outs for the Tigers. Barfield had two hits and one RBI for Adairsville. Kaden Coker (double), Brody Varner, Harrison Cole, and Hufstetler each added one hit in the loss.  Calhoun (8-3, 1-0) visits Adairsville (8-3, 0-1) on Thursday, and the two teams will complete the three-game series on Friday back in Calhoun.

    March 3, 2026 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com Georgia Highlands College baseball won its Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association opener on Tuesday afternoon, defeating visiting South Georgia State 13-3 in seven innings. South Georgia tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth, but the Chargers responded with 10 unanswered runs over their next three frames to end the game early. Georgia Highlands outhit the Hawks thirteen to four. David McKechnie picked up the pitching victory with a five-inning start. He allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks while fanning eight. Braxton Wade worked two shutout innings to close out the win. Wade yielded only one hit with no walks in the sixth and seventh innings. Every Charger in the batting order had at least one hit, led by Carson Page with four hits and one RBI. Emiliano Dominguez had two hits and one RBI. Andrew Bishop (home run, three RBI), Harper Davenport (home run, three RBI), Mason Moore (home run, two RBI), Wyatt Gatlin (double, sac fly, RBI), Caden Marcos, Aidan Larkin, and Hayden Miller (triple) each added one hit. The loss dropped South Georgia State to 15-10 overall and 0-1 in conference action. Georgia Highlands (21-7, 1-0) welcomes Andrew College for a conference doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
