The Cass and Woodland High School swim teams squared off with Southeast Whitfield and Dawson County Tuesday night at the Adairsville High School facility with the Woodland girls and boys taking first place and both Cass teams finishing second. The Cass girls knocked off 3rd-ranked Rome 51-48 Tuesday night on the Lady Colonels home court in an important Region 7-AAAAA contest. The Lady Colonels started slowly. They trailed 12-4 after one quarter and 22-17 at halftime, but continued to chip away cutting the visiting Lady Wolves advantage to 35-32 by the end of the third period. Cass then outscored Rome 19-13 in the final period to secure their three-point win. Sophomore Claire Davis nailed four, three-pointers and scored 21 of her game-high 25 points in the second half to pace the Lady Colonels. Londaisha Smith followed with 17 points. The Davis-Smith duo accounted for 17 of the Lady Colonels' 19 fourth quarter points in the victory. Taryn Callahan chipped in five points for Cass while Haley Johnson and Justice Bennett added two apiece. Taemmica Nation and Amberly Brown led Rome (15-4, 8-2) with 10 and nine points, respectively. Cass (15-6, 6-6), who has now won three straight and moved into sole possession of fifth place in the region, travels to Carrollton Friday for a 6 p.m. start. WOODLAND GIRLS 53, PAULDING COUNTY 35 The Lady Cats picked up their second Region 7-AAAAA victory of the year Tuesday night over visiting Paulding County, 53-35. Woodland had four players reach double digit scoring as Gracie Styles led the way with 15 points. Carli Clymer contributed 11 points. Morgan Cooper and Jordan Thompson followed with 10 each. Abigail Taylor finished with three points for the Lady Cats while Lauren Morris and Ansley Evans added two apiece. Woodland led 15-10 after the first eight minutes and was up 32-21 by halftime. The Lady Cats extended their lead to 42-27 by the end of the third quarter. Bre’Nae Madiset led the Lady Patriots with 14 points. The loss dropped Paulding County to 1-19 overall and 0-12 in Region 7-AAAAA. “The girls keep improving and making progress,” said Woodland head coach Kyle Morgan. “We have decreased and/or increased final score margins on region opponents the second time through the schedule.” Woodland (4-14, 2-8) hosts unbeaten and 2nd-ranked Kell (19-0) Friday night at 6 p.m. and travels to Hiram Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. tip. SONORAVILLE 67, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 24 The visiting Lady Phoenix raced out of the gates Tuesday night at Adairsville to lead 20-4 after one quarter and 43-8 at halftime on their way to a 67-24 Region 6-AAA win over the Lady Tigers. Alexa Geary led Sonoraville with 20 points. Maliyah Parks and Kierra McAfee followed with 15 and 10 points, respectively. Lexie Childers led Adairsville with six points. Mia Scott scored four. Alexa Varner, Ji’Leyah Mitchell, and Autumn Henderson contributed three each. Alexia Crisp and Haley Stiles finished with two points apiece. Hannah Holligsworth added one point for the Lady Tigers. Sonoraville improved to 12-6 for the season and 7-2 in Region 6-AAA. The Lady Tigers (5-14, 2-9) make the trip to Coahulla Creek Friday night for a 7 p.m. start.

The Adairsville and Cass boys basketball teams picked up home wins Tuesday night as region basketball schedules hit the mid-January mark and teams begin jockeying for seeding in February’s region tournaments. The Adairsville boys rallied in the final eight minutes Tuesday night at home to defeat Sonoraville in come-from-behind fashion, 49-44. The visiting Phoenix led 10-6 after one quarter, 25-20 at the intermission, and 39-33 through three quarters before the Tigers outscored them 16-5 in the final quarter for a five-point Region 6-AAA win. Gaven Crunkleton and Savaun Henderson led the Tigers with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Malachi Gardner followed with eight points. Conner Crunkleton scored seven. T.J. Printup contributed four. Tucker Deams had three points and Jaxon Welchel added two. Orry Darnell led the Phoenix with 15 points. Murray Somers scored 10. The loss drops Sonoraville to 9-7 on the season and 5-4 in region action. “We played some tough defense tonight,” said Tigers head coach Alex Disbrow. “We also made some clutch free throws down the stretch to seal the game.” Adairsville (8-10, 5-6) is currently in sixth place in the nine-school Region 6-AAA and travels to Coahulla Creek Friday night for an 8:30 p.m. start. CASS BOYS 68, ROME 50 Colonels head coach Sean Glaze pointed out Tuesday night following his team’s game that it wasn’t always pretty, but he was proud of his guys for their effort in a 68-50 Region 7-AAAAA victory over visiting Rome. “We ran our offense well tonight,” noted Glaze, “but we missed a ton of shots. I’m still so proud of our guys, however, because we still played with enough energy and defense to get a region win.” Cass led 20-9 after one quarter before Rome closed the gap to 25-20 at halftime. The Colonels pulled away a bit in the third quarter with a 48-33 advantage and then expanded that lead in the final period. Zaylan Chaney and Braxton Benham reached double figures for the Colonels with 23 and 17 points, respectively. C.J. Pipkin contributed nine. Alfred Washington totaled eight. Zay Jackson tossed in five points. Jordan Ford finished with three, Ethan McIntyre two, and Andrew Glaze one point. Jaylen Nelson led the visiting Wolves with 17 points. Justin Ingram scored 13 for Rome (3-14, 2-8). Cass (13-8, 8-4 Region 7-AAAAA) currently holds down the fourth place spot in the region with a two-game lead over Paulding County. The Colonels trail Hiram and Carrollton by only one game in the standings. Cass travels to challenge Carrollton Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in another important region tilt. TRION 71, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BOYS 62 The Excel Christian Academy boys led 34-29 at halftime Tuesday night at Trion and were only down by one point — 50-49 — after three quarters, but the Eagles were outscored 21-13 in the fourth quarter and fell to the host Bulldogs, 71-62, in Region 6-A action. Jaden Hardy led Trion with 23 points. Andy Allen followed with 12 and Rob Brown scored 11 to help lead the Bulldogs (8-10, 4-5). Rayshawn Womack led ECA with 21 points. Rashard Doyal scored 15 and Jakaden Barkley 10 for the Eagles. Kalil Holley added eight points, Brenden Quillin scored six, and Trippe Anderson finished with two points for Excel. The Eagles (3-15, 2-6) play at North Cobb Christian Friday night at 7 p.m. and host Darlington Saturday at 4:30 p.m. PAULDING COUNTY 81, WOODLAND BOYS 47 The visiting Patriots led 19-10 after one quarter and 43-26 at the intermission on their way to a 34-point Region 7-AAAAA win Tuesday night at Woodland. Paulding County improved to 14-7 on the season and evened their region mark at 6-6. Woodland (2-17, 0-11) hosts region-leader Kell Friday night in a 7:30 p.m. start before traveling to HIram Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. tip.

Former Cartersville High School quarterback and current Clemson signal-caller led his Tigers to a second-straight College Football Playoffs National Championship Game this season, but the defending national champions fell Monday night in the New Orleans SuperDome to top-ranked LSU, 42-25. The loss was the first for Clemson in more than two years and the first-ever for Lawrence, snapping a 29-game winning streak. The loss, which was the Clemson’s first in 742 days, leaves the 2019 ACC champs with the 12th-longest winning streak in college football history and was the longest since Florida State won 29 straight between 2012-14. In Monday’s title game, Lawrence put Clemson on top 7-0 with a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Clemson took a 17-7 lead early in the second quarter, but the heralded LSU offense grabbed momentum later in the half to score three unanswered touchdowns and took a 28-17 lead at halftime. The Clemson defense forced a three-and-out to begin the second half and Lawrence helped engineer a 50-yard, LSU penalty aided, scoring drive that narrowed the margin to 28-25 in the first four minutes of the third quarter. LSU answered, however, with a 68-yard drive late in the third quarter and a 57-yard drive early in the fourth quarter — both on Heisman winner Joe Burrow TD passes — to seal their victory and the national title. Lawrence finished 18-of-37 for 234 yards but did not have a touchdown pass. His LSU counterpart, Burrow, was 31-for-49 for 463 yards and five touchdowns. The National Championship is the fourth in LSU football history. They also won the title in 2007, 2003, and 1958. With Lawrence back for his junior year, Clemson is a heavy favorite to make it to the College Football Playoff for a sixth consecutive season in the 2020 season. They are already the top-ranked team in ESPN’s 2020 Way-Too-Early Top 25.

Cartersville native Ashton Hagans flirted with a triple-double Saturday in Kentucky's Southeastern Conference win at Rupp Arena over Alabama. Meanwhile, a dozen other local basketball players contributed with their pro or college teams around the nation last week and Adairsville swimmer Rylee Moss contributed with the Old Dominion University swim team. SWIMMING RYLEE MOSS — Old Dominion University (Fr., Adairsville HS)… was second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.59) and finished seventh in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.44) as the Monarchs lost 193-101 at William & Mary Saturday. Moss was also part of the sixth place 200-yard medley relay team (1:51.12). ODU hosts Davidson this Saturday in Williamsburg. PRO BASKETBALL ELIJAH ROBINSON — Atenas Cordoba (3rd yr. pro; Argentina-La Liga; F; Emmanuel College; Excel Christian Academy)… scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds Wednesday in a 92-88 over Instituto Atletico Central Cordoba. Robinson also had four assists and a steal in the win. In Sunday’s 83-74 loss to Boca Juniors, Robinson scored 23 points and had nine rebounds. Fountain then scored nine points, grabbed six rebounds, and added two assists and a pair of steals Saturday in a 74-70 overtime win at Central Georgia Tech. ASHTON HAGANS — University of Kentucky (So., G, Cartersville native, Newton HS)… flirted with a triple-double Saturday in a 76-67 home win over Alabama. Hagans finished with 15 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. He also added three steals in the SEC win. Tuesday during a 78-69 victory at Georgia he had 13 points, five assists, four steals, two rebounds, and one shot block. This week the 14th-ranked Wildcats (12-3, 3-0) play at South Carolina Wednesday night and travel to Arkansas for a Saturday afternoon game. CARTER HEDDEN — Hocking CC (So., G, Cass HS)… scored five points and issued a pair of assists Wednesday in a 77-73 home loss to Owens CC. The Hawks (10-5, 0-2) also had an 87-58 loss Saturday at Bryant & Stratton (OH). Hocking hosts Edison State Wednesday night and plays at Owens Saturday afternoon. Defending state champion Woodland is the top seed in Class AAAAA and will open the first round Thursday against Miller Grove. In Class AAAA, Cartersville will square off with Cairo in the first round Thursday and Adairsville has an opening round match in Class AAA against Pierce County. As expected Saturday, the defending state champion Woodland High School wrestling team dominated the competition at the Region 7-AAAAA Team Duals Championship and cruised to a second straight title region at Paulding County. The Wildcats blanked Kell 82-0 and beat Kell 62-15 to reach the championship match where they utilized 13 first-period pins in 14 matches for a 78-3 rout of the Trojans. In the finals match against Carrollton, Demarcus Williams got things rolling for the Wildcats with a first-period pin at 195 pounds in a match that was expected to be much closer. The momentum carried forward as Woodland teammates Bryce Shedd, Beau Jernigan, Asher Jernigan, Carson Bailey, Easton Bailey, Caleb Jones, Caden McCrary, Caleb Henson, Bryce Hughes, Cole Cochran, Jaxon Smith, and Bryce Collum all followed with similar results. Woodland will likely be the No. 1 seed in the Class AAAAA State Duals Championship that begins Thursday morning at the Macon Centreplex. The Wildcats will be seeking their fourth duals state title since 2003 (2011, 2019). Woodland also won traditional state championships in 2003 and 2019. ADAIRSVILLE, CARTERSVILLE ADVANCE TO STATE The wrestling teams at Adairsville and Cartersville placed second at their respective region duals championships Saturday to advance to next weekend’s GHSA State Duals Championships at the Macon Centreplex. Adairsville finished second at the Area 4-AAA Duals at Sonoraville while Cartersville was runner-up at the Region 5-AAAA Duals at Central-Carroll. The Tigers had wins over Ringgold (66-12) and Coahulla Creek (57-18) Saturday to reach the finals against defending Class AAA state champions Sonoraville. Adairsville challenged, but fell to the Phoenix 47-27. The Adairsville loss left only one more match to secure a trip to the state tournament. In a challenge for true second place, the Tigers cruised past Calhoun 69-9. James Standridge and Steven Lynch went 4-0 on the day for Adairsville. Standridge pinned all four of his opponents while Lynch split time in the 195-pound and 220-pound divisions to win four matches. Teammates Dalton Cornett and Owen Henry also were undefeated on the day with 2-0 marks, splitting time in the 160-pound division. In Carrollton, Cartersville secured its second straight trip to the Class AAAA State Duals with wins over Chapel Hill and Cedartown before succumbing to host Central-Carroll in the finals for a runner-up finish. The third-seeded Canes narrowly beat Cedartown to reach the finals. Cartersville rallied for wins in the final three matches — Tyler Earick (113 pounds), Giles Turner (120), and Eoin Neal (126) to secure the victory. Cedartown, who had narrowly beaten Cartersville earlier in the season, later eliminated LaGrange in the loser’s bracket to prevent Cartersville from having to wrestle a fourth match for a true second place. CASS FINISHES THIRD IN 7-AAAAA The Colonels failed to reach the state duals championship next weekend in Macon but managed to finish third in the Region 7-AAAAA Saturday at Paulding County. Cass had wins over Villa Rica (59-18), Paulding County (49-18), and Kell (49-36) on the day, but a loss to Carrollton (36-32) kept the Colonels from reaching the state tournament. Zach McKnight (152) pinned all four of his opponents on the day to go 4-0. Montgomery Tompkins (106) and Bryce Kresho (120) were also unbeaten on the day with three pins each. .

The local high school swim teams competed Friday and Saturday at the Northwest Georgia Regions Meet at the Calhoun Aquatic Center. Adairsville finished seventh for the best combined finish among the local teams. Woodland placed 13th, Cartersville 14th, and Cass was 20th in the 22 team competition that was won by Calhoun. Blessed Trinity placed second with Creekview, Jefferson, and North Paulding rounding out the top five teams in combined scores for girls and boys. The Adairsville girls were sixth of 21 teams in the girls events. Cartersville was ninth and Woodland 12th. The Tigers also had the best finish among local teams in the boys events with a ninth place finish. Woodland was 12th and the Cass boys were 18th. The Cartersville girls and boys basketball teams lost home games with Chapel Hill Saturday afternoon at The Storm Center while the Excel Christian Academy boys fell on the road at Mt. Zion-Carroll. CHAPEL HILL 43, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 38 The Cartersville girls stayed close throughout, but could not quite overcome Chapel Hill Saturday in a 43-38 Region 5-AAAA loss at The Storm Center. With inclement weather forecast and on its way for the afternoon and early evening, the games were played early in the day. Chapel Hill trailed 11-10 after one quarter, but held leads of 22-15 at halftime and 30-24 through three quarters before holding on for a five-point victory. Savannah Howard led Chapel Hill (8-9, 1-3) with 14 points. Nadia Barbary added nine for the Panthers. Cartersville was led by Ariana Cochran with 11 points. Cio Seigler (photo) followed with nine. Naijah Evans scored seven. Jimaya Moore contributed six points. Jakayah Draughn and Lehla Thomas finished with two points each. Kierra Milline added one point for the Lady Canes. “We missed a lot of shots,” said Cartersville head coach Cindy Moore. “We had it cut to two points late but Chapel Hill hit the shots they needed down the stretch.” Cartersville (8-8, 1-3) plays at Class AAAA 6th-ranked Troup County next Friday night at 6 p.m. and at Cedartown Saturday night — also at 6 p.m. CHAPEL HILL 82, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 79 (Overtime) The Hurricanes fell behind early and trailed by 14 at halftime before rallying in the second half to send the game into overtime tied at 62-all Saturday at The Storm Center. Unfortunately for Cartersville, they ultimately fell in double overtime to the Class AAAA, 5th-ranked Panthers, 82-79. The visiting Panthers led 17-11 after one quarter and 37-23 at the intermission, but the Canes outscored Chapel Hill 20-10 in the third period to pull within four. Cartersville then sent the game to overtime tied at 62 by holding a 19-15 advantage in the fourth quarter. Chapel Hill was only 4-for-9 from the charity stripe in the extra periods — leaving an opportunity for the Hurricanes — but Cartersville was only 2-for-5 themselves and came up just short. K.J. Doucet led the Panthers with 21 points. Kelvin Hunter scored 17. Mikai Valentine knocked down 16 points and Micah Bell added 14 for Chapel Hill. Kolbe Benham (photo) led four Cartersville players in double figures with 19 points. Micah Tart followed with 16. Kyler Johnson scored 14 and Kam Callahan 11. Marquail Coaxum finished with eight points. Marko Dudley contributed seven and Robert Novak tossed in four points for the Canes. Chapel Hill improved to 11-6 on the season and 3-1 in Region 5-AAAA. ZION- CARROLL 79, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BOYS 53 Excel’s leading scorer, Rayshawn Womack, managed only four points in the first quarter before going out with an ankle injury and the Eagles struggled to keep up at Mt. Zion-Carroll Saturday during a 79-53 loss. J.D. Hindsman led Mt. Zion with 25 points. Kendrick Brownlow tossed in 12 in the victory. Mt. Zion (7-7, 4-4) led 14-11 after one quarter, 24-19 at halftime, and 49-41 through three quarters before pulling away in the fourth quarter. Rashard Doyal stepped up with 31 points for Excel in the loss. Trippe Anderson followed with eight. Kalil Holley scored five. Jakaden Barkley had three points and Brenden Quillin added two. Excel (3-14, 2-5) plays at Trion Tuesday night at 7 p.m. and travels to North Cobb Christian Friday for a 7 p.m. tip. The Eagles will host Darlington next Saturday afternoon at The Nest.
