The Adairsville High School swim team competed Saturday at the 4th annual Pope Greyhound Invitational in Cobb County. The meet included 14 teams with the host Greyhounds coming out on top in both the girls and boys divisions. Kennesaw Mountain, Allatoona, East Coweta, and Riverwood rounded out the top five girls teams. Second place through fifth in the boys meet were Kennesaw Mountain, Riverwood, North Cobb, and Heritage. Both Adairsville teams placed tenth. Adairsville’s Harper Powell had her team’s top performance of the day with a fourth place finish in the girls 50-yard freestyle. It was a difficult afternoon and early evening Saturday for local high school basketball teams with all teams in action dropping region contests. The Cartersville boys fell at Central-Carroll. Adairsville dropped a home matchup with Murray County. Woodland lost at Villa Rica and Excel Christian Academy lost to Bowdon. CENTRAL-CAROLL 68, CARTERSVILLE 61 The host Lions pulled out a nip-and-tuck battle with the Cartersville Hurricanes Saturday in Carrollton, defeating the Canes 68-61. Cartersville led 12-9 after the first eight minutes, but Central held two point leads both at halftime and at the end of the third quarter before going on to win by seven. Canden McClure scored a game-high 21 points for the Lions. Trey Powell followed with 16 and Jayden Greene contributed 12 points for Central-Carroll (10-5, 1-1). The Tigers failed to score in the opening quarter and found themselves down 19-0. Adairsville cut the lead to 27-12 by halftime and were down 39-27 at the end of the third quarter but could not overcome the early deficit. Athan Hicks poured in 35 points for the visiting Indians. Haden Newport added 16 for Murray County (11-4, 5-3). Jaxon Welchel led Adairsville with 11 points. Malachi Gardner followed with 10. Gaven Crunkleton and Savaun Henderson added eight each for the Tigers. The visiting Red Devils led 17-12 after one quarter and 38-34 at halftime before pulling away to a 58-41 lead by the end of the third quarter. The three local high school girls basketball teams in action Saturday all dropped region contests. Cartersville fell at Class AAAA 10th-ranked Central-Carroll, Woodland lost at Class AAAAA 3rd-ranked Villa Rica, and Adairsville lost at home to Murray County. Dekyia Cofield scored 12 of her game-high 18 points for Villa Rica (15-2, 6-2) in the first quarter. Kyndal Coleman followed with nine points for the hosting Wildcats. Woodland — the visiting Wildcats Saturday — got 12 points from Carli Clymer, eight from Jordan Thompson, and seven from Gracie Styles in their loss. The Lady Cats (3-12, 1-6) host East Paulding Tuesday and Rome Friday. Both games are 6 p.m. starts. Tuesday night, Woodland is offering $1 admission to anyone wearing Woodland apparel. MURRAY COUNTY 69, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 32 Murray County led at each quarter stop and pulled away late for a 69-32 win Saturday at Adairsville. The visiting Lady Indians led 29-15 after one quarter, 42-23 at the intermission, and 62-26 through three quarters. Murray County (6-10, 3-5) was led by Mattie Nuckolls with 21 points. Kerra Lowe scored 17 and Natalie O’Neal added nine for the Indians. Haley Stiles was the top scorer for Adairsville with 12 points. The Cartersville boys utilized a late rally Friday night at The Storm Center for a come-from-behind Region 5-AAAA win over Cedartown. Cartersville outscored Cedartown 6-0 over the final 36 seconds to edge the Bulldogs 59-57 in both teams’ region opener. Cartersville led 15-10 after the opening quarter, but Cedartown took a 31-27 advantage to the halftime locker room. The Hurricanes led again, 45-40, after three quarters but Cedartown (6-3, 0-1) held the lead heading into the final minute. Kam Callahan paced the Canes with 22 points. Kolbe Benham followed with 13 and Robert Novak scored nine for Cartersville. Jeremiah Johnson led Cedartown with 22 points. Elijah Diamond scored 14 for the Bulldogs. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 56, HARALSON COUNTY 36 The Adairsville Tigers evened their season mark and picked up a Region 6-AAA victory Friday night at Haralson County, 56-36. Gaven Crunkleton, Malachi Gardner, and Savaun Henderson led Adairsville with 14, 11, and 10 points, respectively. The Tigers led 27-16 at the intermission and 36-24 after three quarters before pulling away in the final period. Adairsville improved to 7-7 on the season and 4-3 in region action. The loss dropped the Rebels to 2-12 overall and 0-7 in Region 6-AAA. The Tigers host Murray County in another region tilt Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. HIRAM 60, CASS BOYS 52 The Cass boys led after the opening eight minutes Friday night at Hiram, but the tables turned in the second quarter and the Colonels were not able to catch the Hornets in the second half. Cass led 11-6 after one quarter, but the Hornets held leads of 22-19 at halftime and 47-33 through three quarters. The Colonels made a run at Hiram in the final period but came up eight points short, 60-52. Tyler Merriweather led four Hornets in double figures with 14 points. Jayven Brown had 13. The host Tigers led 32-27 at the intermission before extending their lead to 55-32 after three quarters. Patrick Shelley led Darlington with 18 points. Griffin Brewster scored 12 and Hank Crawford finished with 10 for the Tigers. Rayshawn Womack paced ECA with 12 points. Brenden Qullin and Kalil Holley scored nine points apiece for the Eagles. The Lady Tigers of Adairsville were the only local girls basketball team to pick up a win Friday night as teams began the January grind through region schedules. Adairsville rallied in the final minute for a come-from-behind win at Haralson County, but the other three local girls teams suffered losses Friday night. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 40, HARALSON COUNTY 39 The Lady Tigers battled from behind most of Friday night but rallied in the final minute to escape Haralson County with a one-point, Region 6-AAA victory. The host Lady Rebels led 11-8 after one period and 20-17 at halftime. Haralson also maintained a 35-32 advantage after three quarters, but Adairsville stayed within three points heading into the game’s final minute. The Lady Tigers’ defense forced a pair of late turnovers and buckets by Lexie Childers and Alexa Varner put Adairsville ahead 40-39 with 15 seconds remaining. A turnover by the Lady Tigers near the division line gave Haralson County one last chance with 0:03 remaining but the Rebels’ last second, three-point attempt missed. Varner and Childers led Adairsville with 10 points each. Haley Stiles was next with nine. Autumn Henderson scored six points and Ji’Lyah Mitchell added five for the Lady Tigers. The Lady Canes (7-6, 0-1) play at Central-Carroll Saturday at 4:30 p.m. HIRAM 56, CASS GIRLS 49 (Overtime) The Cass girls dropped an important Region 7-AAAAA game at Hiram Friday night 56-49 in overtime. Hiram, who led by one point at halftime and by one point heading into the fourth quarter, outscored the Lady Colonels 13-6 in the overtime period. The Lady Hornets made 20 of 23 free throws in the contest while Cass was only 10 for 16 with four misses coming in the final period. Hiram (8-6, 4-2) was led by Imani Smith with 20 points. Erial Owens followed with 13 and Lauryn Towner added 10 for the Hornets. Londaisha Smith scored 19 for Cass. Claire Davis tossed in 16 points and Ariana Hames had nine for the Lady Colonels. Cartersville High School offensive lineman Jonah Gambill was named to the Atlanta Journal Constitution's Class AAAA 2019 All-State High School Football Team. The 6’4", 280-lb. senior has signed to play his collegiate football with the Memphis Tigers. Cartersville senior quarterback Tee Webb -- who has signed with Louisville, junior wide receiver Devonte Ross, and junior linebacker/running back Evan Slocum were honorable mention. The Woodland High School wrestling team placed second December 27-28 at the Osceola High School Knockout Christmas Classic in Kissimmee, Florida. Lake Gibson High School won the tournament championship with 218.5 points. Woodland was next at 204.5 with Jesuit (203), South Dade (153), and Somerset (150) rounding out the top five teams in the 41-team event. Woodland's Caleb Henson won the 145-pound division individual championship while teammate Jaxon Smith finished runner-up in the 170-pound weight class. The Cass girls repeated as Adairsville Ace Home Center Christmas Clash champions Monday night with a 71-44 rout of Trion in the three-day tournament finals. The Lady Colonels sprinted to a 21-7 lead after one quarter and never looked back in their 27-point win. Londaisha Smith, named Tournament MVP, led a quartet of Lady Colonels in double figures with 17 points. Claire Davis, who was selected to the All-Tournament team, and Haley Johnson followed with 13 points each while Justice Bennett scored 11 for Cass. Ariana Hames added eight points for Cass and was chosen for the All-Tournament team. Keara McDaniel and Amaya Ford finished with three points each. Raziyah Ware and Mikaela Jackson added two and one point, respectively. Davis scored 10 of her 13 points in the opening quarter, Smith scored 11 of her 17 in the second half, and Johnson knocked down 11 of her 13 points — including three shots from behind the arc — in the second half. Cass guard and floor general, Taryn Callahan (photo), was also named to the All-Tournament team for the Lady Colonels. Trion (8-5) was paced by Chloe Murdock who scored 12 points. Tianna Youngblood and Shelby Carlock added nine points apiece for the Lady Bulldogs. Cass had tournament wins over Lafayette and Cartersville to reach Monday’s finals. The Christmas Clash win also comes on the heels of a Gordon Lee Christmas Tournament title December 19-21. The Lady Colonels (13-4) now turn their attention to Region 7-AAAAA action Friday night at Hiram at 6 p.m. CORNERSTONE PREP ACADEMY 61, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 54 The Adairsville boys dropped a back-and-forth, third place game Monday to Cornerstone Prep Academy as the Tigers hosted the 2nd annual Christmas Clash. The visiting Cougars led 19-13 after one quarter and held a 30-26 advantage at halftime before Adairsville grabbed a 45-42 lead by the end of the third quarter. Cornerstone outscored the Tigers 19-9 in the final eight minutes to pull out the victory. Devon Sweat scored a dozen of his game-high 24 points in the first quarter to lead the Cougars. Joshua Greene added nine for CPA as the Cougars improved to 16-3 on the year. Adairsville had four players reach double figures in scoring led by Jaxon Welchel’s 14 points. T.J. Printup scored 13 while Malachi Gardner and Gaven Crunkleton finished with 10 each. Savaun Henderson finished with four points. Tucker Deams added three. Greene and Sweat were selected to the All-Tournament team for Cornerstone Prep Academy. Crunkleton and Welchel were named All-Tournament selections for the Tigers. Adairsville (6-7) returns to Region 6-AAA action this weekend with a trip to Haralson County Friday night and a home game against Murray County Saturday. Both games are 7:30 p.m. tips for the Tigers. WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP (NJ) 40, CASS BOYS 39 The Cass boys, playing in the fifth place game at the KSA Tournament in Orlando, Florida Monday morning, fell to the Washington Township Minutemen of Sewell, New Jersey, 40-39. Cass finished 1-2 in the tournament with a 61-44 Friday loss to Monsignor Farrell (NY) and a victory over Orlando’s Conrad Academy Saturday, 58-32. The Colonels (10-6) travel to Hiram Friday night at 7:30 p.m. as they return to Region 7-AAAAA action. WALKER BOYS 76, LAFAYETTE 58 Class A-Private third-ranked Walker won the boys championship game of the Adairsville Christmas Clash Monday night by handing the Lafayette Ramblers their first loss of the season, 76-58. Walker, who also won the Paulding County Hoopsgiving Classic back in November, improved to 13-1 on the season behind 22 points by tournament MVP Chandler Baker and 19 by Chris Newell. Omar Cooper and Burke Chabahao were also named to the All-Tournament team. Lafayette (14-1) was led by Jalen Ramsey with 17 points and Aiden Hadaway with 15. Ramsey, Hadaway, and teammate Decameron Porter were selected to the All-Tournament team.

The Woodland girls and boys basketball teams each lost their respective consolation games Monday afternoon at the Adairsville Ace Home Center Christmas Clash hosted by Adairsville High School. TRION 64, WOODLAND BOYS 58 The Woodland boys lost to Trion 64-58 in the seventh place consolation game of the Adairsville Christmas Clash Monday. Trion led 10-4 after one quarter and held a lead at each quarter stop. The Bulldogs were ahead 28-16 at halftime and held a 42-31 advantage through three quarters. The Bulldogs (5-6) had three players in double figures. Rob Brown, Andy Allen, and Austin Mason finished with 20, 14, and 13 points, respectively. K.J. Rogers (photo) paced Woodland with 17 points. Jaden Johnson followed with 15. DiAnthony Heathcock contributed 11. Jamison Lawrence scored nine. Johnathan Thomas had three points and Tyler Thurman added two for the Wildcats. Woodland (2-12) returns to Region 7-AAAAA action at Carrollton Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and travels to Villa Rica Saturday at 4:30 p.m. LAFAYETTE 50, WOODLAND GIRLS 27 For three quarters, the Lady Cats struggled to get points on the board Monday afternoon in their fifth place game of the Adairsville Christmas Clash. Woodland, who went 1-2 in the event, lost to Lafayette, 50-27. The Lady Ramblers led 11-4 after eight minutes, were up 24-7 at the intermission, and led 31-13 after three quarters. Lafayette (9-6) was led in scoring by LaTyah Barber with 14 points and Imani Cook with 13. Ansley Evans scored eight points for the Lady Cats. Jordan Thompson, Morgan Cooper, and Callie Jones had four each. Abigail Taylor scored three and Lauren Morris added two points. Thompson was named to the All-Tournament team. Woodland (3-10) has Region 7-AAAAA games this weekend at Carrollton Friday at 6 p.m. and at Villa Rica Saturday at 3 p.m.
