Carrollton scored early and often Thursday at home to make short work of the Woodland Wildcats in the first game of a two-game Region 7-AAAAA home-and-home series. The host Trojans blanked Woodland 15-0 in four innings and limited the Wildcats to only one hit — a third inning single by Fisher Davis. Carrollton starting pitcher Chris Gater (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 1K) and reliever Colton Cosper (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K) silenced the Woodland bats. The Trojans connected for a dozen hits with Asa Awbrey (2 RBI), Brandon Prince (RBI), and Charlie Lanier (RBI) leading the way with two hits each. Koby Stansel (3 IP, 13R, 10ER, 11H, 2BB) suffered the pitching loss. Trent Porter (0.1 IP, 2R, 1ER) was on the mound in the bottom of the fourth when the Trojans ended the game with Ryan Anderson’s inside-the-park two-run home run. Woodland (9-7, 5-4) will host Carrollton (14-4, 5-2) Monday at 5:55 p.m.

Sonoraville scored a season-high 20 runs Thursday night at Adairsville to even their season record and region mark with a 20-7 win over the Tigers. The visiting Phoenix sent twelve men to the plate and scored eight runs in the top of the first inning and eased to a five-inning Region 6-AAA victory. Beau Bullard (3 IP, 4R, 1ER, 7H, 1BB, 2K) garnered the pitching win for Sonoraville. Matthew Parrott (2 IP, 3ER, 5H, 2BB, 1K) closed out the final two innings for the Phoenix. Five different Tigers pitched in the loss with half of Sonoraville’s runs unearned. Adairsville committed four errors. Elijah Padgett, who did not get through the first inning, was tagged with the loss. Wade Conduff, Jacob Ray, Logan Hunt, and Brenden Carroll all pitched in the contest for Adairsville. Hagan Steely, Jacob Cornette, and Cole Gross had two hits each for Sonoraville. Tyler Sheriff (2 RBI), Padgett (RBI), and Conduff (RBI) finished with two hits each for Adairsville. Chase Horn (RBI), Trace Still (RBI), B.J. Roper, Hunt, and Ray added one hit apiece. Sonoraville improved to 7-7 overall and 2-2 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (1-10, 0-5) hosts Coahulla Creek Tuesday.

Georgia Highlands’ baseball led conference leader Gordon College 4-1 through five innings Thursday at LakePoint, but the visiting Highlanders scored seven unanswered runs over the next three innings to beat the Chargers, 8-4. Georgia Highlands out hit Gordon 18 to 11, but the Highlanders made more of their opportunities and had a pair of long balls. Sam Kuchinski and Ethan Scott both homered for Gordon. Jason Fointno, Sam Sly, Paul Grazzini, and Kuchinski all had two hits each. Lavoisier Fisher, Bryson Horne, and Skylar McPhee finished with three hits apiece for Georgia Highlands. Trace Twardoski (1.2 IP, 1ER, 2H) suffered the pitching loss for the Chargers in relief of starter Brant Brown (5.1 IP, 4R, 3ER, 5H, 4BB, 6K). Ryan Smithson (1 IP, 3R, 2ER, 4H) and Brady Barker (1 IP, 1BB, 1K) worked the eighth and ninth innings on the mound. Gordon improved to 23-4 overall and 6-1 in the GCAA. Georgia Highlands (18-12, 6-5) hosts a doubleheader between the two teams Saturday at 1 p.m. at LakePoint to conclude the four-game conference series.

The Adairsville girls locked up a seventh-straight state playoff appearance and the Tigers also picked up a win Thursday night at Ringgold in Region 6-AAA soccer action. Ringgold packed ten defenders in the box to stymie the Adairsville girls’ offense for much of the night, but once Megan Hardin scored in the 59th minute off an assist from Hannah Deboard the flood gates opened for an eventual 5-0 win. Cat Wheeler score a minute later, Hardin added her second goal in the 68th minute, and Kaylee Jordan scored a pair of late goals for the Tigers. Hardin and Lillie McBride had assists while goalkeeper Havyn Isaac recorded seven saves on the night for the shutout. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 2, RINGGOLD 0 The Adairsville boys also earned a region win at Ringgold Thursday night, winning 2-0. Joseph Pacheco had an unassisted goal in the first half and Emanuel Lopez scored an unassisted goal in the second half. Ringold was held scoreless by a strong team defensive effort according to coach Jayme Laney. William Longmore was credited with a nice defensive stop as the Tigers’ diamond defense kept Ringgold off the scoreboard. Goalkeeper Tyrek Bryant stopped eight shots. The Tigers are home Friday against Model at 5:30 p.m.

Woodland’s girls and boys soccer teams both defeated Cedartown Wednesday night at home in non-region games and the Cartersville girls and boys both blanked visiting Troup in Region 5-AAAA action. WOODLAND GIRLS 6, CEDARTOWN 0 The Woodland girls blanked visiting Cedartown Wednesday night 6-0 in a non-region contest at Wildcat Stadium. Tiera Feanny scored the Lady Cats’ opening goal and Grace Webb added a second Woodland goal for an early lead. Feanny then added two more tallies in the opening half for a 4-0 lead at the intermission. Sydney Molinaroand Kiersten Iruegas added a goal each in the second half as the Lady Cats cruised. Woodland (2-8-1) hosts East Paulding Friday. WOODLAND BOYS 7, CEDARTOWN 3 Preston Godfrey scored a hat trick in the first half as the Wildcats took care of business Wednesday night at home against the Bulldogs. Abeja also assisted on a goal as did Alex Rios and Javier Morillon. Ethan Eckert and Leo Betancourt split time for the Canes as goalkeeper in the shutout. Woodland pitchers Bailey Ward and Ben Ammons combined to limit the Cass offense while the Wildcats’ bats produced just enough offense to defeat the visiting Colonels Wednesday night at The Ballpark at Woodland, 5-3. The Region 7-AAAAA win by Woodland completed a two-game series sweep of the Colonels by the Wildcats. Woodland won at Cass Monday night, 6-4. Cass took a 2-0 lead off starter Ward in the fourth inning on three walks and a two-RBI single by Jordan Gani. The Wildcats answered, however, with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. That was enough offense for Ward (5.1 IP, 3ER, 6H, 4BB, 5K) who picked up the pitching win. Dallas Adams doubled home two runs in the fourth for the Wildcats. Ward drove in a fifth inning run with a bloop single to right field and two more runs scored on a wild pitch and a throwing error by the Colonels. Clay Means singled home a run for Cass in the sixth inning, but Woodland coach Matt Montgomery turned to reliever Ben Ammons (1.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K) who got out of the sixth and worked a spotless seventh for his second save in the series. Matt Shook (1 IP, 3R, 2ER, 1H, 1BB) suffered the pitching loss in relief of starter Blaine Ingram (2 IP, 0R, 1H, 2K) and Jayden Smith (2 IP, 2ER, 4H, 3K). Thomas Botts (1 IP, 0R, 1K) worked the sixth inning for the Colonels. Means had two hits and one RBI for Cass. Gani finished with the two-RBI double. A high school pitcher’s duel ended with fireworks Wednesday when Canes’ centerfielder Preston Welchel smacked a two-run, walk-off home run over the centerfield wall to lift Cartersville to a come-from-behind 2-1 win over visiting LaGrange. After six scoreless innings, LaGrange took a 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh inning off Canes’ ace Mason Barnett when Cole Crawford singled home Trent Bailey who had led off the inning with a hit of his own. There was a walk to Charles Crawford sandwiched in between. Barnett (photo right, #18) fanned the next batter on four pitches to end the inning and the Hurricanes responded in their half of the seventh. Josh Davis walked to start the Canes’ seventh, Cohen Wilbanks laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Davis into scoring position, and Welchel hit a 1-0 pitch over the purple wall at Richard Bell Field for the dramatic win. Barnett (7 IP, 1ER, 3H, 3BB, 13K) collected the pitching win with a complete-game effort the took 101 pitches. The Auburn-signee was in the strike zone with almost 69 percent of his pitches. Matthew Morgan (6.1 IP, 2ER, 6H, 5BB, 3K) was the hard-luck losing pitcher for the Grangers. The home run by Welchel (photo, #27) capped a perfect night at the plate. He finished 2-for-2 with a double and two walks. Barnett had two hits including a double. Davis finished with two hits for the Canes. The loss drops LaGrange to 5-13-1 on the season and 0-2 in Region 5-AAAA. The Cartersville girls and boys tennis teams completed a road sweep of Cedartown Tuesday in Region 5-AAAA matches. Will Allen, Luke Kottemann, and Griffin Shaw all secured singles wins for the Hurricanes. Nate McDonald and Luke Gambill took a Line 1 doubles victory. Isaac Gridley and Robert Novak combined for a win a Line 2. In the girls’ match at Cedartown, Ashley Popham, Emily Bush, and Chloe Satterfield each took singles lines. The doubles teams of Alice Terry/Lydia Wiedetz and Mason Cline/Mia Shaw captured wins as well. The Cartersville boys can lock up the region’s top seed with a win at Chapel Hill Thursday. The Lady Canes will secure the region’s No. 2-seed with a win Thursday at Chapel Hill. Cartersville will host the Region 5-AAAA tournament April 9-10 at Dellinger Park.
