The Georgia Highlands offense had one of its most productive games Monday night in a 21-8 conference win at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The Chargers trailed 2-1 after three innings and the game was tied 4-4 after four frames, but Georgia Highlands scored seven runs in the top of the fifth to take control. Four more runs in the seventh and another six in the eighth inning put the game away. Three Chargers had four-hit games including Malik Spratling who hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs. Bryson Horne (double, two RBI) and Lavoisier Fisher (double and two triples, four RBI) also had four hits. Austin Foster had three hits including a double and one RBI. Skylar McPhee contributed two hits including a double, a home run, and four RBI. Hunter Moody had a hit and three RBI. Parker Orr drove in a run with one hit. Blake Brady and Trace Twardoski added one hit each. Ryan Smithson (1 IP, 2R, 1ER, 1H, 2BB, 2K) picked up the Chargers’ pitching win in relief of starter Ethan Underwood (3.1 IP, 4ER, 6H, 0BB, 1K). Levi Ayers (3.2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 4BB, 3K) closed out the final three and two-thirds innings. The loss drops ABAC to 11-28 overall and 5-17 in conference games. Georgia Highlands (26-19, 12-10) hosts West Georgia Tech Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at LakePoint and travels to Gordon College Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.

The Adairsville boys tennis team, appearing in the state tournament for the first time since 2014, was eliminated Monday by Greater Atlanta Christian in the opening round of the Class AAA bracket. GAC, Region 7-AAA champs, won all five lines in straight sets to advance to the Round of 16. The Spartans will face the Westminster/Jackson County winner in Round 2. Adairsville was represented by its standard lineup of Jack Bates, Cameron O’Neal, and Oak Hemby at Line 1-3 singles. Landon Swanson and Cody Kimbrough played Line 1 doubles with Zach Ogle and Tristin Alford representing the Tigers at Line 2 doubles. Adairsville, a four-seed from Region 6-AAA finished the regular season 6-5, went 1-2 in the region tournament, and finished the post season with a 7-8 mark.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL SARAH FOX — Agnes Scott College (Fr., Inf., Cass HS)… hit safely in three of the Scotties’ final four regular season games last week including a 3-for-4 game at Huntingdon College last Wednesday. For the week, Fox was 5-for-9 with a stolen base. In her first college season, Fox hit .279 with seven RBI in 27 games. Agnes Scott finished the year by missing the USA South Conference tournament with a 6-28 overall record. The Scotties were 3-13 in the conference. SIERRAH GANI — Georgia Highlands CC (So., Inf., Cass HS)… heading into the final two weeks of the regular season, Gani continues to lead the Chargers with a .472 batting average and has 40 RBI in 39 games played. In doubleheaders last week against conference leading Georgia Military College and Gordon State CC, Gani was 6-for-11 at the plate with a double, a walk, two RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored. GHC split games with both conference foes. The Chargers (22-16, 13-9 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association) host Andrew College Thursday and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Saturday in two more GCAA doubleheaders. SYDNEY HODORFF — LaGrange College (Sr., C/Inf., Woodland HS)… hit safely in five of the Panthers’ six games last week and finished 6-for- 17 at the plate with a double, a walk, and seven RBI. LaGrange swept doubleheaders with conference opponents Wesleyan and at Berea (KY) while splitting a home doubleheader with Judson College (AL). The Panthers (14-14, 9-7 USA South) complete regular season play out of conference at Judson Tuesday before opening the conference tournament in a best-of-three series at Huntingdon Friday and Saturday. HANNAH KNAPP — Talladega College (Jr., UT, Adairsville HS)… went 4-for-11 with one run scored and one RBI, but the Tornadoes dropped doubleheader decisions to Tennessee Wesleyan and Point University at home. Talladega (4-26) hosts Auburn-Montgomery Tuesday and Judson College Thursday. PARIS POSTON — Columbus State University (Fr., OF, Cartersville HS)… in their only two games this past week, the Cougars split a home conference doubleheader with Francis Marion University Saturday. Poston was 1-for 3 with two RBI and a run scored in a 5-4 win and was 1-for-3 with one RBI in a 12-9 loss. The Cougars’ right fielder has started 38 games this season and appeared in 39 with a .265 batting average. She has 18 RBI and a pair of homers among 14 extra base hits. CSU (29-13, 9-3 Peach Belt Conference) is currently third in the conference and hosts second place Georgia College Tuesday in a doubleheader. HANNAH TODD — Kansas University (So., P, Cartersville HS)… made appearances in all three games of the Jayhawks’ Big 12 Conference series at home with Oklahoma this past weekend tossing a total of six innings. She retired the only batter faced in the sixth inning of Friday’s 10-0 loss. She retired the only two batters she faced in the seventh inning of Saturday’s 5-0 loss, and entered with only one out in the first inning in Sunday’s 8-0 loss working five innings. Todd allowed three earned runs on five hits, three walks, and a hit batsman. She fanned three. Kansas (14-27, 2-7) will look to snap a six-game losing skid this weekend at Texas Tech with single games Thursday through Saturday. TAYLOR WAITS — Brewton Parker College (Jr., OF, Cartersville HS)… had a single to left-center field Saturday in her only plate appearance of the week. It came in the bottom of the seventh inning in a 4-0 loss to visiting Faulkner University (AL). She also appeared as a pinch runner in the Barons’ 1-0, 11-inning win over Faulkner on Friday. BPC (14-28, 8-18 Southern States Athletic Conference) hosts Middle Georgia State Tuesday for a conference doubleheader and entertains non-conference foe Trinity Baptist College (FL) for a doubleheader Thursday. ANNALYN YANTIS — Samford University (Sr., P, Cartersville HS)… picked up her fourth pitching win of the season Friday with a four inning relief appearance against visiting East Tennessee State. Yantis (4-7) allowed one earned run on three hits and one intentional walk. Samford (20-25, 9-3 Southern Conference) is in the midst of a five-game winning streak after sweeping the visiting Buccaneers. They host Mercer in a three-game SoCon series Friday and Saturday. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Albuquerque Isotopes (6th yr. pro; Triple-A Pacific Coast League; Colorado Rockies’ organization; LHP; Georgia Southern University; Cartersville HS)… made relief appearances last Wednesday and Saturday at Reno and at Tacoma. Howard earned his first win of the year with two and one-third innings of work at Reno. He entered with two outs in the fifth inning and did not allow a run. He scattered three hits and a walk with one strikeout as the Isotopes trumped the Aces 13-2. Saturday at Tacoma, Howard worked the final two innings of an 11-2 win over the Rainiers. He allowed one earned run on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Albuquerque (7-4) currently trails the Las Vegas Aviators by two games in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Southern Division. CONNOR JUSTUS — Mobile BayBears (4th yr. pro; Double-A Southern League; Los Angeles Angels’ organization; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS)… in a rain plagued four-game series at the Mississippi Braves last Wednesday through the weekend, Justus started twice at shortstop and twice at second base. He was 4-for-11 in the series with a double, a run scored, and three walks. The BayBears (4-5) are currently third in the Southern League South Division, two and one-half games behind the Pensacola Blue Wahoos and a half-game behind the Biloxi Shuckers. COLLEGE BASEBALL ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Auburn University (Jr., LHP, Cartersville HS)… made a pair of appearances in losses for the 24th-ranked Tigers as they went 1-3 for the week. He retired the final two outs of the sixth inning but was tagged with his first loss of the season last Tuesday as Auburn fell to Jacksonville State 11-6. Anderson (5-1) gave up four earned runs on two hits and two walks with one strikeout against the Gamecocks. In a 4-1 loss at 11th-ranked Texas A&M Sunday, he entered in the fourth inning with the Tigers trailing 3-1 and worked four and two-thirds innings. He allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk while recording five strikeouts. For the season, the southpaw has a 3.00 ERA in 33 innings with 36 strikeouts. Auburn (24-12, 8-7 SEC) plays at 13th-ranked Georgia Tech Tuesday and hosts 18th-ranked Ole Miss Thursday through Saturday in a three-game conference series. LEVI AYERS — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… was called on to retire the final two outs and the only two batters he faced Friday of a 19-2 home win over Andrew College. BAILEY CAMPBELL — Young Harris College (So., 1B, Cass HS)… still limited by a recent hand injury, Campbell made an unsuccessful pinch hitting appearance last Wednesday at Mars Hill College. Now with 24 appearances and 20 starts, Campbell still carries a .311 batting average with two homers and 23 RBI. LANE GRIFFITH — University of West Georgia (Jr., C, Adairsville)… started all five games behind the plate for the Wolves last week as they went 3-2. Griffith was 4-for-14 with a walk, five runs scored, and three RBI. West Georgia won one of three at Auburn Montgomery and had non-conference wins over Emmanuel and Georgia Southwestern. The Wolves (21-19, 12-11 GSC) currently hold the seventh of eight conference playoff spots in the Gulf South Conference with six league games remaining. MASON ROBINSON — Louisiana Tech (R-Sr., OF, Woodland HS)… in three games at Florida Atlantic this past weekend Robinson was 2-for-9 at the plate and scored a run as the Bulldogs won two of three Conference USA games, but the right fielder also made a pair of impressive defensive plays. In Friday’s game, he made a sliding catch in foul territory to end the third inning with the Bulldogs ahead 2-0. The catch came with the bases loaded to end an Owls’ threat. In Sunday’s game, Robinson ran full speed into the fence lining right field foul territory and flipped over the barrier but held on for a catch for the first out of the game. Louisiana Tech (24-18, 10-5) plays at Louisiana-Monroe Tuesday before hosting Marshall for three C-USA games Thursday through Saturday. TRISTIN SMITH — Young Harris College (Sr., 2B, Adairsville HS)… was 6-for-14 last week as the Mountain Lions won all four games — one at Mars Hill College and three in conference over visiting Augusta University. TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (R-Sr., OF, Adairsville HS)… helped lead the Mountain Lions to four straight wins last week. He was 6-for-15 at the plate with three doubles, four runs scored, three walks, and three RBI. YHC won at Mars Hill College and swept a home three-game series with Augusta University. The Mountain Lions (28-13, 14-8) make the trip to Columbus State for a three game Peach Belt Conference series Thursday through Saturday. PRO BASKETBALL ELIJAH ROBINSON -- Villa San Martin (1st yr. pro; Argentine League; Emmanuel College; Excel Christian Academy)... Robinson led Villa San Martin in scoring during a pair of wins last week. He scored 23 points and added five rebounds in an 80-76 win over Echague last Tuesday. Robinson followed that up with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds, while chipping in with four assists, during an 81-69 triumph over Hindu Club on Friday. GOLF LINDSEY BONNER -- York College (So., Cartersville HS)... saw a first-round lead slip away on the second day of the Gettysburg Invitational to finish runner-up in the event. Despite the team's second-round slide, Bonner improved over the weekend. She shot 88 on Saturday and 84 on Sunday to finish 13th in the 33-person field. TENNIS PEYTON GOLLHOFER -- Ball State University (Sr., Cartersville, GA; Laurel Springs Academy)... Gollhofer didn't have to do much to help the Cardinals to a 7-0 rout of Northern Illinois on Sunday. She teamed with Isabelle Dohanics for a 6-3 win on Line 2 doubles, but the dominant senior wasn't needed in singles play, as more inexperienced players still managed to shut out the Huskies. Ball State will close out the regular season against Akron on Saturday. The two teams will enter the match tied for third in the Mid-American Conference at 4-2. TRACK AND FIELD TREVOR KNOWLES -- Albion College (So., Woodland HS)... won the high jump and placed third in the long jump in Albion's home tri-match on Friday. He cleared 1.90 meters in the high jump and leapt 6.38 meters in the long jump.

Georgia Highlands softball split a conference doubleheader at Gordon State College Saturday with a 3-2 loss in the first game and a 5-4 extra innings win in Game 2. The Chargers were limited to only three hits in the opener by Highlanders’ pitcher Madison Powell (7 IP, 2R, 0ER, 3H, 0BB, 1K). Mallory Alford doubled. Alexis Davis had a hit and one RBI and Sydney McDonald had one hit for GHC. Pitcher Kara Kight drove in a Chargers’ run with a second inning groundout. Kight (6 IP, 3ER, 7H, 1BB, 3K) also suffered the pitching loss despite a solid, complete-game effort. In Game 2, Georgia Highlands came from behind for a win in eight innings. Haley Robinson (8 IP, 4ER, 9H, 1BB) was the Chargers’ complete-game pitcher. Lexi Palazzo had two hits including a solo home run in the second inning that gave the Chargers an early 1-0 lead. Alford also had two hits. Emma McDonald had one hit and one RBI. Davis contributed a hit. Deyonce Lewis and Sydney McDonald both added one RBI. With Saturday’s split, Gordon College is 12-25 overall and 8-14 in conference play. Georgia Highlands (22-16, 13-9) hosts a pair of conference doubleheaders next week. Georgia Highlands baseball dropped a conference doubleheader Saturday at LakePoint to visiting Andrew College, falling 9-6 and 8-2. The sweep by the Tigers earned a split in the four-game series for the week. The Chargers had won the first two games of the series in one-sided games. Cotton Phillips (4 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 4K) was the opening game winner for Andrew Saturday with four innings of relief work for starting pitcher Hunter Norman (4 IP, 6ER, 8H, 2BB, 5K). Justin Barr was 4-for-4 with a walk and three RBI to lead the Tigers’ offense. Joey Fletcher and L.J. Bryant both added a pair of hits and two RBI apiece. Early defensive mistakes cost Georgia Highlands. The Chargers gave up five unearned runs in the first three innings and six unearned in the games. Georgia Highlands trailed 5-1 early, but held a 6-5 lead through five innings only to have the Tigers send the game to extra innings with a run in the sixth. Andrew posted three runs in the top of the eighth inning and Phillips allowed a double, but worked a scoreless inning to complete the Tigers’ win. Skylar McPhee had three hits for the Chargers in the first game. Malik Spratling had two hits including a double, a home run, and four RBI. In Game 2 Andrew scored three times in the second inning, added a single run in the fourth, and four more in the fifth inning on their way to a six-run win. Georgia Highlands cut the lead to 3-1 in the second inning and scored a run in the fifth after the Tigers had taken an 8-1 lead. Daniel Lee (4.2 IP, 2ER, 4H, 1BB, 6K) and Chandler Griggs (2.1 IP, 0R, 2H, 2K) combined on the mound for Andrew. Bryant and Clint Sellers combined for five hits and three RBI. Parker Orr had three hits including a solo home run for the Chargers. Blake Brady, Trace Twardoski, and Hunter Moody (RBI) had the other GHC hits. With Saturday’s wins, Andrew improves to 22-25 overall and 10-11 in conference play. There was plenty of fishing action on Lake Allatoona Saturday morning as boys and girls representing seven high schools and a pair of middle schools competed in an Amateur High School Bass Anglers event. The high school competitors represented Adairsville, Calhoun, Cartersville, Cass, Gordon Central, Sonoraville, and Woodland. The middle school competitors represented Calhoun and Cass Middle Schools.

Cartersville took over sole possession of first place in Region 5-AAAA Friday night with a 6-2 win at Sandy Creek. The win over the Patriots, coupled with a Troup loss to Cedartown, means the Canes now have a one-game lead in the region standings over the Tigers. Cartersville started fast with five runs in the top of the first and added a run in the fourth inning for a 6-0 advantage. Sandy Creek (6-21, 0-10) scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Canes’ starting pitcher, Logan Martin, improved to 6-0 with a ten strikeout performance. Gage Morris struck out the only batter he faced to finish up the sixth inning, and J.P. Georgia Highlands College baseball won its second one-sided game in a row over Andrew College Friday night with a 19-2 win at LakePoint in Emerson. The Chargers won 16-7 at Andrew Wednesday to open the four-game conference series. Friday night, GHC sent a dozen men to the plate and scored nine times in the second inning to take a big lead early. The Chargers also finished the night with five home runs. Malik Spratling went 3-for-5 with a double, two homers, and six RBI. Blake Brady, Lavoisier Fisher, and Parker Orr also homered. Orr's homer was part of a three-hit game. Dalton Rhadans (6.1 IP, 2ER, 10H, 3BB, 9K) started on the mound and earned the pitching win. Levi Ayers (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H) wrapped up the game on the mound for the Chargers. GHC started the conference series Wednesday with a 16-7 blow out win at Andrew in Cuthbert. Orr, Skylar McPhee, Keith Lyle, and Hunter Moody combined for 14 of Georgia Highlands’ 20 hits as the quartet drove in a dozen runs in the series opening win. Ethan Underwood picked up his first pitching win for the Chargers with five innings of work after entering in the third inning. He allowed a solo home run and one walk in the appearance while fanning five. Brant Brown, Dalton Rhadans, Trace Twardoski, and Logan Ward all tossed one inning each for Georgia Highlands on Wednesday. The Chargers (25-17, 11-8) and Andrew (20-25, 8-11) will conclude the conference series Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m.

The Cartersville and Cass boys track and field teams finished first and second respectively, while the Cartersville girls were second in a five-way meet Thursday at Gordon Central High School in Calhoun. Cartersville won the boys meet with 129 points. Cass was second with 99 and host Gordon Central was third with 70 points. Sonoraville won the girls meet with 100 points. Cartersville tied Gordon Central for second with 90 points. The Cass girls were fifth with 18 points. The Adairsville baseball team came-from-behind Thursday evening to take the lead at Sonoraville with a five-run fourth inning then held on late for a 9-7 Region 6-AAA win. The Phoenix held leads of 3-0 after one inning and 6-3 after three, but the Tigers outscored Sonoraville 6-1 over the final four frames for the two-run victory. Noah Nation (4.2 IP, 2R, 1ER, 5H, 4BB, 1K) allowed only one earned run to pick up the pitching win for Adairsville. Wade Conduff (2.1 IP, 5ER, 3H, 2BB, 1K) also pitched for the Tigers. Grant Hegwood and Hagan Steely both had two hits to lead the Sonoraville offense as the Phoenix slipped to 10-12 overall and 5-7 in Region 6-AAA. Trace Still was the only Tiger with two hits. Landon Ayers drove in two runs and had a double. Jacob Ray (RBI), Kyler Smith (RBI), Levi Blackwell, B.J. Roper, Nation, and Conduff added one hit apiece. Adairsville (4-14, 3-9) travels to Coahulla Creek next Tuesday and will wrap up the regular season at home next Thursday and Friday against Murray County and Ringgold. All three games are scheduled for 5:55 p.m.

The Woodland High School girls tennis team dropped the Region 7-AAAAA third place consolation match to Hiram Thursday afternoon, but will advance to the Class 5A state tournament next week as a 4-seed. The Lady Cats’ Line 1 doubles tandem of Emma Savage and Eryn Gentry picked up the only Woodland win of the day with a straight sets 6-1, 6-3 victory. Breanna Shook at Line 1 singles and Kayla Gales at Line 3 singles took their matches to a third set, but lost. Shook won her opening set 6-4, but then lost 3-6, 3-6. Gales won her second set 6-3, but dropped the first and third sets by 1-6 scores. Woodland’s Line 2 doubles team of Abigail Spaulding and Monterya Morrow lost 3-6, 4-6 and Lady Cats’ Line 2 singles player, Becky Wesley, was pulled off the court when the team match was decided although Wesley was leading in the third set. Woodland (11-9) will open the state playoffs next week at the region champion from Region 6-AAAAA.
