On the strength of four goals by Cat Wheeler, the Adairsville girls soccer team remained unbeaten in region play Tuesday night with a convincing 6-0 win at Murray County. The Tigers, on the other hand, were not able to score in a loss to the Indians and both Woodland teams lost region matches to Rome. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 6, MURRAY COUNTY 0 Sophomore Cat Wheeler scored four goals, including three in the second half, to guide the Lady Tigers to a 6-0 Region 6-AAA road win Tuesday at Murray County. Taylor Rhoades assisted Kaylee Jordan on Adairsville’s second goal of the game in the 13th minute and Rhoades added a goal just before halftime to give Adairsville a 3-0 lead at the intermission. Goalkeeper Havyn Isaac (photo) had seven saves in the shutout. Murray County is now 1-3-1 overall and 0-2 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (5-2, 3-0) makes the trip to Coahulla Creek Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff. MURRAY COUNTY 4, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 0 Although Tigers’ goalkeeper Tyrek Bryant made fifteen saves in the game, the Indians scored three first half goals and added another in the second half for a 4-0 region win. Murray County improved to 4-1-2 on the season and 2-0 in region action. The Tigers fall to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in Region 6-AAA and travel to Coahulla Creek Thursday. ROME 4, WOODLAND GIRLS 1 The Lady Cats scored in the opening minute of the game Tuesday, but Rome answered with four first half goals of their own to hand Woodland a 4-1 Region 7-AAAAA loss. The Lady Wolves improved to 7-3 overall and 4-0 in the league. Next for the Lady Cats (1-7-1, 1-3) is a non-region match at North Cobb Wednesday. ROME 7, WOODLAND BOYS 1 Miguel Hernandez had the Wildcats only goal in a 7-1 home loss to Rome. The visiting Wolves improved to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (1-3-2, 1-2) travels to Villa Rica Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. start.

The Cass girls and boys soccer teams dropped Region 7-AAAAA matches Tuesday night at home against East Paulding. The Lady Colonels were edged 5-4. The Colonels fell 2-1. Leido Toribio scored two goals for the Lady Colonels on assists from Logan Vermaas and Lupita Pineda. Vermaas scored the third Cass goal on another assist from Pineda and Jaden Musacchio added the final Lady Colonels score off a feed from Maddie Shook. The Cass boys lost to the visiting Raiders 2-1. Alex Cabanas scored the only Colonels’ goal off an assist from Slomi Orozco. The Lady Colonels are now 3-5-1 overall and 1-3 in region play. The Colonels slipped to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the region. Cass travels to Hiram Friday evening.

Cass baseball rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh Tuesday night for a walk-off, Region 7-AAAAA win over the Hiram Hornets. The Colonels trailed 7-5 heading into their final three outs, but rallied with four hits and a sacrifice fly to escape with their second straight, one-run win over Hiram. In the eventful Colonels’ seventh, Thomas Botts singled and moved to third on a Sam Melton double. A wild pitch enabled Botts to score. Logan Nelson followed with a single into right field moving Melton to third and Nelson moved up to scoring position on the throw back to the infield. Kyle Miller was inserted as a courtesy runner for Nelson before Jayden Smith delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Melton and moved Miller to third base. Karson Kelley (photo) chased Miller home with a one-out RBI single to left field and Cass had its fourth win in its last five games. The Hornets led 3-0 until Cass scored twice in the bottom of the third. Hiram then extended the lead to 6-2, but the Colonels scored three runs over the next two innings to narrow the margin to 6-5. The Hornets (0-9, 0-5) added a run in the top of the seventh to go up 7-5, setting up the Colonels’ dramatic final frame. Smith (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win for Cass in relief of starter Clay Means (5 IP, 6R, 5ER, 10H, 3BB, 3K). Sophomore Matt Shook led the Colonels’ offense with three hits, including a double and a triple. Botts had two hits and two RBIs. Melton (double, RBI), Means (double), Nelson, Kelley (RBI), and Bryson Markley (double, RBI) had the other Cass base hits. Cass (8-5, 4-1) will continue region action Wednesday against Rome at LakePoint at 5 p.m. and will host the Wolves Friday at the Cass Athletic Complex at 5:55 p.m.

Woodland tennis took a pair of Region 7-AAAAA matches Tuesday evening from Cass at Hamilton Crossing Park. The Lady Cats and Wildcats both won by identical 3-2 final scores. The Cass girls took two of three singles matches, but Woodland swept both doubles lines to secure the win. Georgia Highlands baseball raced out of the starting gates Tuesday night at LakePoint and coasted to a 13-1 conference win over visiting West Georgia Tech. Chargers starting pitcher Zach Fordham tossed a one-hitter and fanned eight in a complete-game effort that extended GHC's win streak to five games. Georgia Highlands scored four runs in the first inning, four in the second, three more in the third, and single runs in the fourth and fifth innings in the blowout win. The Knights managed their lone run in the top of the fifth on two hit batsmen, a walk, and a sacrifice fly. The Chargers smacked 15 hits in the win. Blake Brady and Skylar McPhee both had three hit games. Malik Spratling hit a grand slam. Lavoisier Fisher doubled and homered and Parker Orr added a three-run home run. West Georgia Tech falls to 10-13 overall and 1-5 in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association play. Georgia Highlands (17-8, 5-1) continues the four-game series with the Knights this weekend in Carrollton with a single game Friday night at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m.

Playing at home, Central-Carroll took a 1-0 to the final ten minutes of regulation Monday night but the Cartersville boys soccer team pushed the offense forward and took the game into overtime with a Pedro Ghanem goal in the 72nd minute. Then late in the overtime, Joel Zazueta curled home the game-winner off the back post and the Hurricanes escaped with a 2-1 region road victory. It was the first region loss for the Lions (6-4, 3-1). Cartersville (5-3, 3-0) stayed unbeaten in Region 5-AAAA. LADY CANES 4, CENTRAL-CARROLL 2 Micah Vance scored a hat-trick of goals Monday evening in the Cartersville girls’ 4-2 win a over the Lady Lions. Kendyl Anderson scored the Lady Canes’ opening goal of the game off an assist from Abbey Craig in the 10th minute. Craig also had an assist on the first goal by Vance in the 25th minute that put Cartersville up 2-0. Linet Chege added an assist on a Vance goal as well. The Lady Canes (6-2-1, 3-0) and Hurricanes host Northwest Whitfield Friday.

Adairsville baseball scored four times in the sixth inning Monday night to secure a 5-1 non-region victory and the Tigers’ first win of the 2019 season. Armuchee, hosting at LakePoint took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but Chase Horn knotted the score at 1-1 in the fifth with an RBI single to score Jacob Ray. The Tigers’ four-run sixth included a three-run double by Kyler Smith and an RBI single by Ray. Noah Nation (4.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 6K) picked up the pitching win for Adairsville in relief of Levi Blackwell (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 3BB, 3K) and Peyton DeBerry (0.1 IP, 2BB). B.J. Roper had two hits for the Tigers. Trace Still, Landon Ayers, and Elijah Padgett added base hits. Armuchee slipped to 0-7 on the season. Adairsville (1-4) will host the Indians Wednesday to complete the home-and-home series.

On the college hardwoods, former Cartersville standout Ryan Davis was named to the all-Peach Belt Conference second team this past week. Davis has led his Francis Marion Patriots club into the NCAA D-II national tournament as an at-large team. Another Cartersville native, Ashton Hagans, and the Kentucky Wildcats begin their post-season efforts this week at the SEC Tournament. COLLEGE BASKETBALL Ryan Davis (Francis Marion Sr., Cartersville) — Davis garnered second-team all-Peach Belt Conference honors for his work this season. He scored six points with six rebounds in a quarterfinal win over Young Harris on Wednesday in the conference tournament. Davis produced a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double in the semifinals. He added four assists, but Francis Marion fell to USC-Aiken on. Even still, the Patriots were selected for the Division-II tournament. Francis Marion will face Augusta in the Southeast Regional on Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina. Ashton Hagans (Kentucky Fr., Cartersville native) — Hagans closed out the regular season with back-to-back double-digit scoring performances. He finished with 10 points against Ole Miss and 14 versus Florida. He wound up with a total of five rebounds and four assists across the two wins. Second-seeded Kentucky earned a double-bye into the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament. The Wildcats will face either seventh-seeded Ole Miss or No. 10 seed Alabama at 7 p.m. Friday. Jana Morning (Berry College So., Cass) — Morning was named the Berry College women's player of the year at the Northwest GA Tip-Off Club banquet last Tuesday. She averaged 9.4 points per game, while ranking in the top-10 in the Southern Athletic Association with 2.7 assists per game, a 70.7 free throw percentage and 38 total steals. Jonathan Pritchett (Vermont Tech So., Woodland) — Pritchett finished with six points, three rebounds and two assists, as Vermont Tech fell to Penn State Wilkes-Barre in the semifinals of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association national championship tournament. TENNIS Peyton Gollhofer (Ball State Sr., Cartersville native) — Gollhofer just went through her worst week of the season, and it says more about just how fantastic she's been that finishing 1-1 in both singles and doubles matches makes for a rough stretch. Gollhofer won 6-3, 6-0 in singles play against Azusa Pacific on Thursday but fell in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 versus her UC Riverside opponent Saturday. It marks her first singles loss of the season. In doubles action, Gollhofer again paired with Isabelle Dohanics, dropping a tough 6-4 decision Thursday and earning a 6-1 triumph Saturday. Overall, Ball State improved to 10-2 on the year with team wins on both days. TRACK AND FIELD Trevor Knowles (Albion So., Woodland) — Knowles placed seventh in the men's high jump at the Southern Invitational hosted by Birmingham Southern over the weekend. WRESTLING Jake Huffine (Chattanooga Jr., Woodland) — A 3-1 showing at the Southern Conference championships wasn't enough to earn Huffine a spot in the NCAA tournament, but it did land him in third place — a couple of notches higher than his fifth seed in the 133-pound division. Huffine secured a 4-2 win in the quarterfinals, avenging a regular-season loss to his Gardner-Webb opponent. He fell in the semifinals to the No. 1 seed before rallying for third with a 13-3 major decision and 10-3 minor decision in the consolation semifinals and consolation finals, respectively.

Woodland High School baseball dropped a pair of games Monday at LakePoint due to the completion of a game from Friday when lightning and heavy rains suspended play at The Ballpark at Woodland. The Wildcats dropped a 5-2 decision to host Rome in the completion of Friday’s game and then fell 2-1 to the Wolves in a pitchers’ duel in the regularly schedule game. Rome took a 2-0 lead through four innings with single runs in the third and fourth frames and that would be enough for Wolves' starting pitcher Knox Kadum. Woodland scored its lone run in the top of the sixth when Bailey Ward (photo) doubled. Ward’s courtesy runner, Lane Hutson, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored when Marco Haro grounded out to short. Kadum kept the Wildcats’ bats silenced for much of the day. The Virginia Tech football quarterback signee tossed a complete game for the Wolves allowing only one unearned run on two hits. Kadum did not walk a batter and struck out fifteen. Ward (5 IP, 2R, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 3K) and Ben Ammons (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 1K) combined on a two-hitter in the Wildcats’ loss. Ward managed the only other Woodland base hit. Rome improved to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (4-7, 1-3) hosts Hiram Wednesday at 5:55 p.m. and plays at Hiram Friday.

Fourth-year professional Connor Justus has made the best of his opportunities with the MLB Los Angeles Angels this Spring. The former Cartersville High and Georgia Tech shortstop is hitting at a high rate and shining in fairly regular playing time with the Big League club. Sam Howard, a non-roster Spring Training invitee with the Colorado Rockies, battled some illness this week, but worked two scoreless frames in Sunday’s loss. On the collegiate diamonds, former Cass High standout Bailey Campbell continues to lead his Young Harris College team at the plate and former Canes’ lefty Elliott Anderson — now a junior at Auburn — worked a pair of spotless innings for the 18th-ranked Tigers last Friday. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Colorado Rockies (6th yr. pro; LHP; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS)… Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reported Friday that Howard is one of a half dozen Rockies’ players who have missed time this past week due to a stomach bug making the rounds through Colorado’s spring training complex. On Sunday, however, Howard worked the final two innings of a Rockies’ split-squad 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The southpaw allowed only one hit and fanned two. Colorado is 6-10 in Spring Training games. CONNOR JUSTUS — Los Angeles Angels (4th yr. pro; SS; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS)… (photo above) came off the bench last Tuesday to replace Andrelton Simmons at shortstop and went 1-for-2 with a stolen base in a 9-2 win over the Chicago Cubs. He went 1-for-1 off the bench Friday and helped turn a pair of double plays in the Angels’ 15-8 loss to the White Sox and played some second base Saturday going 0-for-1 at the plate in an 11-4 loss to the Cubs. On Sunday, Justus was 1-for-2 after entering at shortstop and scored a run in a 9-9 draw with the Seattle Mariners. The 24-year-old is hitting .357 this spring with the MLB club in 14 at-bats. The Angels are 9-8-1 in Cactus League action. SOFTBALL SIERRA GANI — Georgia Highlands CC (So., Inf., Cass HS)… the Chargers’ second baseman was 3-for-6 with a walk, scored three times, and drove in a run in a doubleheader split with Gordon State last week. Gani also went 0-for-6 as GHC was swept Saturday by conference leader Georgia Military College in a doubleheader. The Chargers (9-11, 2-2) travel to Andrew College Saturday and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Sunday for conference doubleheaders. SYDNEY HODORFF — LaGrange College (Sr., C, Woodland HS)… went 1-for-7 in a pair of losses last week to Piedmont. She also made a pinch hitting appearance during a doubleheader with Fontbonne University (MO) Friday. The Panthers (2-4, 0-2 USA South Athletic Conference) host Huntingdon College Tuesday before traveling to Greensboro College Friday. HANNAH KNAPP — Talladega College (Jr., C, Adairsville HS)… was 3-for-5 with one RBI in a pair of one-sided losses at Brenau University Wednesday. Talladega also suffered two losses to visiting Ave Maria University Tuesday, but no individual data was provided on those games. PARIS POSTON — Columbus State University (Fr., OF, Cartersville HS)… in six starts this past week, Poston was 3-for-17 at the plate with a pair of doubles and three RBIs. She also reached base on a pair of walks and a hit by pitch. The Cougars went 4-2 for the week by splitting games with Palm Beach Atlantic and Nova Southeastern on a Florida swing along with wins over King University and University of Virginia-Wise at Saturday’s Tusculum College (TN) Invitational. CSU (17-8) begins Peach Belt Conference play Friday and Sunday with doubleheaders at USC-Aiken and Lander University. HANNAH TODD — Kansas University (So., P, Cartersville HS)… made a two inning, no-decision start Friday in a KU 6-4 win at home over Maine during the Jayhawk Invitational. Todd gave up two runs (only one earned) on two hits and three walks. She fanned one Black Bear facing 11 batters. Kansas (5-15 with two games pending Sunday) travels to University of Omaha Tuesday before hosting Tulsa and Nebraska in the Rock Chalk Challenge Friday through Sunday. TAYLOR WAITS — Brewton-Parker College (Jr., OF, Cartersville HS)… was utilized as a pinch runner in one game and was hitless, but scored a run in a pair of home losses last Wednesday to USC-Beaufort. She then came off the bench in two home losses to University of Mobile Friday, playing centerfield in the second game. The Barons (5-13, 1-3 Southern States Athletic Association) host Bethel University Friday and Saturday for a four-game series. COLLEGE BASEBALL ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Auburn University (Jr., LHP, Cartersville HS)… made a two-inning appearance Friday and combined with starter Tanner Burns for a 6-0 shutout of Texas-San Antonio at Plainsman Park. Anderson retired all six Roadrunners faced in the final two innings of the game, needing only 19 total pitches. 18th-ranked Auburn (14-2) plays at South Alabama Tuesday night before opening their Southeastern Conference schedule this weekend at home against 23rd-ranked Tennessee. BAILEY CAMPBELL — Young Harris College (So., 1B/DH, Cass HS)… hitting in the cleanup spot, Campbell was 2-for-6 with four walks and two RBIs in a pair of home wins this week for the Mountain Lions. Both hits came in an 8-6 win over Carson-Newman. The RBIs were during a 5-4 win over 15th-ranked Southern Indiana. Through his team’s first 20 games, Campbell leads the team with a .390 batting average and is second on the team in RBIs with 22. YHC (13-7, 4-3 Peach Belt Conference) travels to Lee University Wednesday night and will host a three-game conference series with Francis Marion University this weekend. JOHN REED EVANS — Shorter University (Fr., C, Cartersville HS)… made a back-up appearance at catcher in an 11-1 win over Moorehouse last Wednesday. He also entered to play left field and coaxed a walk in his only plate appearance in the second game of Shorter’s doubleheader sweep of Christian Brothers University. The Hawks (12-7, 5-5 Gulf South Conference) are scheduled to complete their series with Christian Brothers Monday before playing at Emmanuel College Tuesday. Shorter plays a GSC, three-game series at University of West Alabama Friday and Saturday. LANE GRIFFITH — University of West Georgia (Jr., C, Adairsville HS)… played in all six games for the Wolves last week going 4-for-14 at the plate with a double, seven walks, one RBI, and four runs scored as West Georgia went 3-3. The stretch of games included a split of two games with West Alabama, a non-conference win over Saint Anselm College, and one win in three games at NCAA D-II top-ranked Delta State University. Osborn gave up a pair of earned runs on five hits, two walks, a hit batsman, and a balk. Osborn is 3-1 in six starts and 32 innings with an ERA of 4.78. Smith is hitting .319 for the season in 11 starts and 47 at bats. He has a home run and nine RBIs. DEVIN WARNER — Auburn University (Fr., Inf., Cartersville HS)… still looking for his first collegiate hit, Warner made his second plate appearance as a pinch hitter Saturday in the Tigers’ 5-0 home win over Texas-San Antonio. Auburn (14-2) is ranked 18th and has a game at South Alabama Tuesday night before opening the 2019 Southeastern Conference schedule this weekend at home against 23rd-ranked Tennessee.

Georgia Highlands baseball completed a four-game series sweep of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College with a doubleheader win Sunday at LakePoint in Emerson. The Chargers won Sunday’s opener 10-1 and then took Game 2, 8-1. GHC won the series opener last Wednesday at ABAC and edged the Stallions Saturday, 6-5. In the first game Sunday, starting pitcher Stevie Szucs tossed a complete game and scattered six hits and a walk while fanning six ABAC hitters. The Lassiter High School product allowed a lone run to the Stallions on a Matt Cuthress RBI single in the fourth inning. Meanwhile the Chargers’ bats provided plenty of offense. McPhee homered with two hits and three RBIs. Horne had two hits including a double and six other Chargers finished with one hit each. Georgia Highlands (16-8, 4-1) starts a four-game conference series with West Georgia Tech Tuesday night at LakePoint. The remaining three games of the series will be in Carrollton Friday and Saturday.
