Cartersville volleyball swept a pair of non-region matches Monday night at the Storm Center. The Lady Canes defeated Sonoraville in three sets 25-9, 22-25, and 15-13. They also took a straight set win over Murray County 25-18 and 25-9. “We’ve battled some injuries this season and have now lost one of our setters,” said Cartersville coach Dustin Cothran. “As a result, we switched offensive systems and for some reason we are struggling with it a bit. We played better against Murray County, so hopefully that will give us some momentum going into the region tournament.” With the two wins, the Lady Canes improved to 23-3 on the season. Woodland softball lost its opening game of the Region 7-AAAAA playoff tournament Monday night in Carrollton to the Kell Longhorns, 8-3. Kell took a 4-0 lead through two innings and added a run in the fourth inning and three more in the sixth inning. Woodland scored single runs in the third, fifth, and seventh innings. Kell out hit the Lady Cats 11 to five and Woodland committed six defensive errors in the loss. Cartersville softball rallied from behind Saturday for a 12-6 win in the second game of a doubleheader to even the best-of-three Region 5-AAAA playoff series with Troup County. Troup won the first game of the day, 10-9. The Lady Canes trailed 6-5 heading into the fifth inning, but tied the game with a run in that frame and took control with a six-run sixth inning. Cartersville out hit Troup eleven to four in the second game and the Lady Tigers committed five errors. Anna Kate McElhaney (3.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 2K) picked up the pitching win for Cartersville in relief of starter Colbi Ballard (3.1 IP, 6R, 4ER, 3H, 6BB, 1K). Allie Jackson had three hits and three RBIs for the Lady Canes. Hope Short (RBI) and Anna Kate McElhaney (double) both had a pair of hits. Cio Seigler (3 RBIs), Mattie Johnson (3 RBIs), Lauren McElhaney, and Paris Poston (double) added one hit each. TROUP 10, CARTERSVILLE 9 In the first game Cartersville led 6-2 going into the final two innings, but Troup posted three runs in the sixth inning and five more in the top of the seventh inning to generate the margin of victory. The Lady Canes out hit the Lady Tigers 15 to eight and still held an 8-5 lead going to the final frame, but Troup scored five runs in the top of the seventh. Cartersville scored a run in their final inning and had two in scoring position, but could not muster the go-ahead run. Kayla Lane drove in six runs for Troup County on three hits that included the go-ahead hit in the seventh inning and a sixth inning home run. Mackenzie Miller drove in two runs with one hit for the Tigers. Abby Taylor (7 IP, 9R, 4ER, 15H, 3BB, 3K) was the pitching winner in a complete game effort for Troup. Lauren McElhaney (7 IP, 10R, 9ER, 8H, 7BB) also went the distance for Cartersville. Cio Siegler doubled twice for the Lady Canes. Paris Poston (3 RBI), Kalli Scheff (RBI), Colbi Ballard (RBI), Allie Jackson, and Hope Short had two hits each for Cartersville. Woodland evened its season and region record Friday night and snapped a two-game losing streak with a 21-10 home victory over the Hiram Hornets. Woodland took an 8-3 lead in the final minute of the first quarter on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Brody Williams to Zach Pitner. Those two then connected again on a two-point pass when Pitner slipped into the end zone following a direct snap to Williams on the “swinging gate” PAT formation. It was the same formation and similar play used by the Wildcats in their overtime win earlier this season over Rockmart. The Woodland scoring drive covered 67 yards on nine plays. Hiram regained the lead before halftime, 10-8. The Hornets drove 69 yards on nine plays and scored on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Nate Presnell to Justin Crayton. Late in the third quarter, Woodland’s Titus Jones set up a touchdown for the Wildcats by returning a punt 69 yards to the Hiram four yard line. Two plays later, DeMarcus Williams scored on a three-yard run, but the two-point conversion attempt failed for a 14-10 Wildcats’ lead. Woodland (3-3, 2-2) took control in the fourth quarter with a 74 yard drive that took 11 plays. Brody Williams and Pitner hooked up again on a 31-yard pass play with 7:13 left in the game. The pass was tipped by a Hiram defender, but was caught by Pitner in full stride and he cruised into the end zone. Michael Campuzano added the PAT kick for Woodland’s 21-10 advantage. Hiram slipped to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland hosts Paulding County next Friday night. HURRICANES POUND LIONS, 55-6 Cartersville took a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter and eventually cruised to a 55-6 Region 5-AAAA win at Central-Carroll Friday night. The win extended the top-ranked Hurricanes streak to 36 consecutive victories over the past three seasons. Trevor Lawrence threw for 308 yards and five touchdowns while TJ Horton had six receptions for 111 yards and three touchdowns as the explosive Cartersville offense exploited the Lions. The Canes wasted no time registering a score. Cartersville found the end zone on two of their first three plays. Lawrence found Kaleb Chatmon on the first play from scrimmage for a 54-yard touchdown pass and a 7-0 lead. Cartersville kicker Jonathan Cruz, who made all his kicks, tacked on the PAT. Following a Central turnover, Lawrence added a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Lowe for a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Lawrence hooked up with Horton for a 14-yard score and running back Rico Frye scored on a 57-yard burst that gave the Canes a 28-0 lead with just over nine minutes remaining in the second quarter. Central-Carroll scored its six points with 3:33 remaining in the half on a 44-yard touchdown pass from Landon Schulenburg to Josh McClendon. The Lions missed the PAT. In the second half, Lawrence connected with Horton for a 64-yard touchdown and a 7-yard scoring pass; Frye added another rushing touchdown from 43 yards; and Terry Berdin scored on an 8-yard run. Frye finished with 110 yards on five carries. Lawrence was 16-for-23 passing and also had 22 rushing yards. Chatmon totaled 143 yards and a touchdown with three receptions. Cartersville High School senior Anthony Seigler has been named the 27th top prospect in the Class of 2018 by Baseball America. The 5-11, 200 switch-hitting catcher and both-hand pitcher has verbally committed to Auburn but will rank high among potential draftees in the 2018 MLB draft. Cartersville softball will host Troup County Saturday afternoon in a Region 5-AAAA playoffs doubleheader to open a best-of-three series between the region foes. Cartersville, the No. 4 seed, will entertain the 5th-seeded Lady Tigers in a 1 p.m. start for the two games. If a third game in the series is needed, it will be played Monday evening. The series winner locks up a state playoffs berth and advances to play the LaGrange/Cedartown series winner for the state playoff third seed next Tuesday. Meanwhile, top-seeded Chapel Hill and 2nd-seeded Central-Carroll will face off for the region championship starting Monday for the region's top seed in the state playoffs. The loser of that series will be the No. 2 seed in the Class AAAA state tournament.

Cass volleyball swept a pair of non-region matches Thursday night at Adairsville defeating both the host Lady Tigers and Gordon Central. Cass defeated Gordon Central 25-13, 25-11 and topped Adairsville 25-6, 25-10. Keegan Krause had five assists and Brianna Bullock was credited with six digs for the Lady Colonels. Cass (20-13, 2-4) is back in action Tuesday for a pair of region matches at Rome High School. The region tournament begins later in the week at Kell High School.

Woodland softball swept a Region 7-AAAAA playoff doubleheader with East Paulding Thursday night at home to win their best-of-three series and advance to play Kell Monday in the region semifinals. Host and 4th-seeded Woodland won the series opener 8-6 and took the nightcap, 6-4. The Lady Cats took an 8-1 lead into the sixth inning in Game 1 and held off a late charge from the Raiders for the 8-6 victory. Woodland pitcher Sarah Baynard (7 IP, 6R, 5ER, 9H, 3BB, 3K) tossed the first of two complete games to pick up the series opening win in the circle. In the series clincher, Woodland — playing as the visiting team and batting first — took a 5-1 lead to the sixth inning. East Paulding rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth however, to narrow the margin to 5-4. The Lady Cats added an insurance run in the top of the seventh for a 6-4 lead and Baynard sat down the Lady Raiders in order to secure the doubleheader sweep. Baynard (7 IP, 4ER, 6H, 1BB, 2K) again earned the pitching win for Woodland. Evans had a three-hit game for the Lady Cats and drove in one run. Jordan Duck (3 RBIs) and Skylar Chappell (double) had two hits each. Higdon added a triple and two RBIs. Morgan Bailey had one hit. East Paulding’s season ends with an 11-14 record. Woodland (12-13) advances to play at Kell Monday and has also secured a berth in the Class AAAAA state playoffs. The starting time for the matchup with Kell has yet to be announced.

She is also an UCA All-American cheerleader. Adairsville Athletic Director Meredith Barnhill said, “She was named Athlete of the Month for her leadership skills and athleticism. She is hard-working, driven, and determined. She serves as an impeccable example to her fellow cheerleaders and peers.” Bishop also carries an outstanding 3.8 grade point average. The September Elite Athlete of the Month for Woodland High School is three sport standout, Carli Clymer. A sophomore cross country runner, basketball shooting guard, and track distance runner, she is the daughter of Laura and Jeff Clymer. Clymer is the 2017 Bartow County cross country champion and the school record holder in both the 1600 meter run in track and field and cross country 5K. “Carli is an outstanding individual who excels in school, sports, and in general character,” said Woodland coach Matthew Landolt. “I’m proud to be involved in her life.” An honor roll student, Clymer has plans to continue her athletic career at the NCAA Division I level. Rett Moore is the September Elite Athlete of the Month from Cass High School. Son of Tracey and Dr. Nicky Moore, Rett is a junior quarterback for the Colonels’ football team. Moore has continued to grow as a player and a leader for Cass. His gritty determination and relentless effort is starting to produce for the youthful Cass offense. He has been a constant threat in the Colonels’ running game and has shown productive signs with the play action passing game. Moore is a 4.0 grade point average student and a leader in the building and in the classroom at Cass High School. The September Elite Athlete of the Month from Cartersville High School is Addie Smith. A senior member of both the Lady Canes’ volleyball and basketball teams, Smith is the daughter of Julie and Howard Smith. Smith is the volleyball team’s captain and the defensive specialist/libero. She is also a two-year member of the Tsunami Rome travel volleyball program. Smith was awarded the FCA “All In” Award in 2017. She is a member of Splash Bartow, FBLA, and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. She is a four-year Beta Club member, a member of National Honor Society, earned the highest GPA for varsity volleyball and basketball the last two years, 2017 Junior Marshall, selected for the Clemson University CATS program in 2016, and will graduate this spring as an Honors graduate with distinction. "Addie is an asset in every sense of the word,” said Cartersville volleyball coach Dustin Cothran. “She is very steady at her position on the court, and is one of the best captains I've ever had in high school or college. She is a great student, a person of strong character, and I expect amazing things from her in the future. She is very deserving of this accolade as well as all of the others she has received to date.
