There were very few changes this week in the statewide rankings involving teams from the local high school football regions. Standings provided by Georgia High School Association and rankings by Georgia High School Football Daily and Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Region 7-AAAAA Rome remains the No. 1 ranked team in all of Class AAAAA following a 62-0 rout of Paulding County last week. The defending state champions led 49-0 at halftime. Quarterback Knox Kadum was 7-for-7 passing for 149 yards and a pair of scores. The Wolves host 4th-ranked Carrollton Friday night. Carrollton (4-0) defeated Woodland last week 41-6. Trojans’ quarterback Mark Wright threw for 169 yards and one touchdown. Kodee Brewer rushed for 64 yards and two scores on nine carries. Kell moved up one notch in the Class AAAAA rankings to No. 8 following their 28-10 win over Cass. Josiah Futral rushed for 129 yards and Dre Houston ran for another 95. The remainder of the top ten in Class AAAAA includes: No. 2 Buford, No. 3 Stockbridge, No. 5 Warner Robins, No. 6 Jones County, No. 7 Starr’s Mill, No. 9 Wayne County, and No. 10 Bainbridge. Region 5-AAAA Cartersville continues its streak as the No. 1 team in Class AAAA following a 41-7 homecoming victory over Cedartown. The Canes led 38-0 at the intermission and scored on all six first-half possessions. Trevor Lawrence was 15-for-20 passing for 327 yards and three touchdowns. JKobe Orr had 100 yards in receptions. Sandy Creek remains 8th-ranked in Class AAAAA following an idle week on the schedule. The Patriots play undefeated and 10th-ranked Troup County this Friday night. Troup (5-0) defeated Chapel Hill 48-12 last week. Montez Crowe threw for 364 yards and five touchdowns. Jamari Thrash had four of those catches for 146 yards and a pair of scores. Cedartown, who was ranked 10th in Class AAAA, fell out of the rankings this week. The remainder of the Class AAAA top ten includes: No. 2 Thomson, No. 3 Marist, No. 4 Blessed Trinity, No. 5 Jefferson, No. 6 Ridgeland, No. 7 Burke County, and No. 9 Woodward Academy. Region 6-AAA Calhoun comes in again this week as the No. 5 team in Class AAA. The Yellow Jackets defeated North Murray 40-13. Zack Fuller rushed for over 200 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Gavin Gray threw for 262 yards. Bremen remains ranked No. 7 this week following the Blue Devils’ 51-0 blanking of Coahulla Creek. Bremen allowed only nine yards of total offense in the shutout. Twins Tyran and Tyric Dobbs rushed for 188 yards and three touchdowns on a mere six carries. Quarterback Wade Cartwright connected on 3-of-4 passes for 98 yards and a pair of scores. Jalen Dallas caught both touchdown passes. The remainder of the Class AAA top ten includes: No. 1 Cedar Grove, No. 2 Peach County, No. 3 Greater Atlanta Christian, No. 4 Crisp County, No. 6 Jenkins, No. 8 Monroe Area, No. 9 Lovett, and No. 10 Pace Academy.

The Woodland volleyball team lost a pair of non-region matches Wednesday on their senior night to Calhoun and Haralson County. Calhoun defeated Woodland 25-11, 25-12 and Haralson County won in three sets 23-25, 25-13, 15-5. The Lady Cats (12-8) play at Adairsville Thursday against the host Lady Tigers and Gordon Central.

Woodland softball secured home field advantage for the opening round of the Region 7-AAAAA playoffs with an 11-3, six-inning victory at Cass Wednesday night. The Lady Cats scored nine runs over the first four innings and Woodland pitcher Sarah Baynard limited Cass to only four hits and a pair of earned runs in the game. Baynard walked three and struck out four. Bella Carnes and Ansley Evans both had three hits and two RBIs each for Woodland. Skylar Chappell (RBI), Morgan Cooper (RBI), Morgan Bailey (RBI), and Brittany Cox had two hits each. Audrey Morris added one hit and one RBI. Alexia Najarro had two hits for Cass. Sarah Fox (double, RBI) and Sarah Moore (RBI) had the other Lady Colonels’ hits. Taylor Gibson (4.1 IP, 9R, 6ER, 11H, 4BB, 2K) was the starting pitching and was tagged with the loss for Cass. Haley Owens (1.2 IP, 2ER, 4H, 0BB, 1K) also pitched for the Lady Colonels. Cass finished the season 5-21 overall and 1-13 in region play. The Lady Colonels did not qualify for the region playoffs. Woodland (10-13, 6-8) will open the Region 7-AAAAA playoffs Thursday at home against East Paulding with a doubleheader in a best-of-three series. The first game will begin at 5 p.m. The Lady Cats and East Paulding finished the region slate with six wins each. Based on region tie-breakers, Woodland will be the fourth seed in the region playoffs and East Paulding is the fifth seed. The series winner will advance to the region semifinals and will lock up a berth in the Class AAAAA state playoffs.

Sarah Baynard tossed a five inning no-hitter as the Woodland Lady Cats blanked East Paulding Tuesday night at home, 8-0. Baynard issued only one walk, hit one batter, and struck out two in the 18 batters faced. She needed only 61 pitches and 37 were for strikes. Woodland scored three runs in the first inning, added two more in the second, another run in the third, and two more in the fourth inning. Caroline HIgdon tripled and drove in two runs for the Lady Cats. Ansley Evans, Brittany Cox, and Skylar Chappell had the other Woodland hits. Jordan Duck drove in one run. East Paulding slipped to 11-12 overall and 6-8 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (10-13, 5-8) wraps up regular season play Wednesday at Cass at 5:55 p.m. CARROLLTON 9, CASS 0 (8 innings) Cass softball stood toe-to-toe with Region 7-AAAAA leader Carrollton Tuesday night for seven innings, but the Lady Trojans took advantage of three Cass errors and had seven hits in the top of the eighth on their way to a 9-0 win at the Lady Colonels’ home field. Aslinn Spradlin picked up the pitching win for Carrollton with three shutout innings of relief. Zahri Dunson (2 RBIs) and Savannah Cook led the Trojans with two hits each. Cass pitcher Taylor Gibson scattered three hits and struck out three through seven shutout innings. She did not issue a walk in the game and the eighth inning rally by the Trojans resulted in only one earned run. Carrollton improved to 21-2 overall and 13-1 in region play. Cass (5-21, 1-13) wraps up the regular season at home Wednesday against Woodland.

Cass volleyball split a pair of Region 7-AAAAA matches Tuesday evening at Woodland. The Lady Colonels defeated the host Lady Cats 25-15, 25-16, but lost a close match to Villa Rica 25-20, 26-24. “Keegan Krause and Alexis Ware had great offensive nights,” said Cass coach Chelsea Morris. “Kyler Trouten had a great night on defense with several blocks and digs.” Cass (18-13, 2-4) plays at Adairsville Thursday in a non-region match and will also face Gordon Central. In their second match, Woodland defeated Rome 28-26, 25-21 for a region victory. Woodland hosts Haralson County and Calhoun Thursday at 5 p.m.

Woodland softball totaled seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings Monday night to break open a close game in a 10-4 non-region win at Cartersville. Cartersville led 1-0 after one inning. Woodland took a 3-1 lead in the second inning and Cartersville tied the game at 3-all through four innings. Woodland pitcher Sarah Baynard allowed only two earned runs on seven hits and two walks to pick up the complete-game pitching victory in the circle. She struck out four. Brittney Cox had a three hit game for the Lady Cats and drove in one run. Caroline Higdon had a pair of hits that included a triple and three RBIs. Bella Carnes added two hits. Skylar Chappell had one hit. Ansley Evans and Audrey Morris each contributed one RBI. Cartersville was led at the plate by Colbi Ballard with three hits and one RBI. Hope Short had a pair of hits. Paris Poston had one hit and drove in a run with a sacr fly. AnnaKate McElhaney added a hit. Ballard (5 IP, 10R, 8ER, 8H, 6BB, 3K) started in the pitching circle for Cartersville and suffered the loss. Lauren McElhaney (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 1K) worked the final two frames for the Lady Canes. Woodland (8-13, 4-8) hosts East Paulding Tuesday at 5:55 pm and closes the regular season at Cass Wednesday at 5:55 pm. Cartersville (8-14, 5-7) concluded the regular season and now awaits results from two Cedartown games this week to determine their playoff fate. Cedartown is 4-6 in region play with games remaining against Chapel Hill and Central-Carroll.

Local collegiate athletes from Cartersville and Bartow County made significant contributions with their respective fall sports teams this past week in football, volleyball, golf and tennis. Most of the cross country programs with local athletes were idle this past weekend and the return status for the Falcons' Vic Beasley remains unknown. NFL VIC BEASLEY — Atlanta Falcons (3rd year pro, OLB/DE, Clemson University, Adairsville HS). . . Beasley suffered a hamstring strain in the Falcons’ win over the Green Bay Packers Sunday night, September 17 and there is no timetable for his return. Prior to his injury, the 2016 NFL sack leader had four tackles, one forced fumble, and two sacks in Atlanta’s first two games. Atlanta (3-0) defeated the Detroit Lions 30-26 Sunday in dramatic style with the Lions at the one-inch line at the end of the game. A catch by Detroit near the goal line was originally ruled a go-ahead touchdown for the Lions, but replay officials determined receiver Golden Tate II was short of the goal line and a 10-second run-off ended the game. Cartersville softball split a pair of games Saturday at the North Cobb Invitational in Cobb County. The Lady Canes defeated Campbell 12-4, but was shutout by Ridgeland 8-0. Cartersville pitcher Colbi Ballard (5 IP, 4R, 2ER, 4H, 3BB, 5K) picked up the victory in the Hurricanes’ opening win. Paris Poston homered and doubled at the plate driving in a pair of runs. Cio Seigler, Presley Edwards, and Hope Short also had two hits and one RBI each. Neely Ledford finished with one hit and three RBIs. Kalli Scheff and Allie Jackson added one hit each for the Lady Canes. Campbell’s loss dropped the Lady Spartans to a 5-16 season record. Hailey Carroll tossed a five inning shutout and struck out three for Ridgeland in Cartersville’s second game of the day. Carroll scattered four hits. Laine Hicks had three hits and two RBIs to lead the Panthers’ offense. Poston had two of the Lady Canes’ hits. Jackson and Lauren McElhaney each added one hit. Cass softball scored three runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh inning Friday night at home to catch Paulding County and send the Region 7-AAAAA game to extra innings tied 6-6. After a scoreless eighth inning, the visiting Lady Patriots scored a run in the top of the ninth to go ahead 7-6 but Cass responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning for an 8-7 win. Kaila Carson singled to lead off the Lady Colonels’ ninth inning in front of walks issued to Alexia Najarro and Sarah Fox. Courtesy runner Keturah Hight scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 7-7 and Sarah Moore drove home the walk-off winning run with a grounder that scored Najarro. It was the first region win for Cass this season. Savannah Hilderbrand led Paulding County’s offense with two hits and one RBI. Six other Lady Patriots had one hit each. Carson led the Cass offense with three hits. Fox, Taylor Gibson, and Holli Elrod had the other Cass hits. Mae Mae McIntyre, Haley Owens, and Moore had one RBI each. Owens (1 IP, 5R, 2ER, 3H) started in the circle for Cass and was lifted after one inning. Gibson (8 IP, 2R, 0ER, 5H, 2BB, 9K) picked up the pitching win. With the loss, Paulding County fell to 4-13 overall and 3-9 in region games. Cass (5-19, 1-11) has two home region games remaining. The Lady Colonels play Carrollton Tuesday and Woodland Wednesday. Both games are 5:55 p.m. starts. VILLA RICA 6, WOODLAND 5 Woodland had the tying run on third in the top of the seventh Friday night at Villa Rica, but could not get the big hit in a 6-5 Region 7-AAAAA loss. The Lady Cats led 3-1 after one inning and pushed their lead to 4-1 in the third inning. Villa Rica scored single runs in the fourth and fifth inning to narrow the margin to 4-3 and then scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead 6-4. Abbey Gamble (7 IP, 5R, 2ER, 7H, 4BB, 6K) picked up the pitching win and had three hits including a home run and two RBIs to lead Villa Rica. Baylee Walls and Izzy Rohr finished with two hits each for the hosts. Woodland pitcher Sarah Baynard (6 IP, 6R, 2ER, 9H, 4BB, 2K) was tagged with the loss. Caroline Higdon and Brittany Cox (RBI) had two hits each for the Lady Cats. Jordan Duck had two RBIs with a double. Skylar Chappel (RBI) and Audrey Morris had the other Woodland hits. Villa Rica improved to 16-7 overall and 9-4 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (7-13, 4-8) plays a non-region game at Cartersville Monday at 5:30 p.m. before playing region opponents East Paulding and Cass on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Lady Cats host East Paulding and travel to Cass. Both region games are 5:55 p.m. starts.
