The Georgia Highlands College baseball team extended its current win streak to nine games Friday afternoon at LakePoint by jumping out to an early lead on Indian Hills CC (Attumwa, Iowa). The Chargers placed seven runs on the scoreboard in the first two innings to take a 7-1 lead and later added a run in the fifth and five more in the seventh for an eventual 13-2 victory. GHC doubled the Falcons in hits, 12 to six. John White had a four RBI day and was 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored to lead the Chargers’ offense. Brandon Bell followed with two hits and a walk for three RBIs. Matt Vaccaro (2 RBI), Devin Bilardello, and Bronco O’Brien each had two hits also. Colby Taylor (7 IP, 2ER, 6H, 0BB, 2K) got the job done on the mound to earn a complete-game pitching victory. The Chargers (15-8) have a doubleheader vs. USC-Lancaster Saturday beginning at 1pm and will play Triton College (River Grove, Illinois) Sunday at 12 noon. All three games are at LakePoint in Emerson.

The Woodland High School tennis teams split Region 7AAAAA matches Friday with the Kell Longhorns. The Kell girls won all five lines for a 5-0 decision, but the Woodland boys won a tight match with the Longhorns that came down to the No. 2 doubles line. In a game marred by 14 combined errors, Cedartown scored seven runs in the first three innings and made it stand up for an 11-7 victory at Woodland Friday night. The Wildcats out hit the Bulldogs, 14-8, but fell behind 7-2 going to the bottom of the third and could not overcome the Cedartown lead. Woodland committed nine errors in the game that led to seven unearned runs for the Bulldogs. Woodland posted two runs in the bottom of the second inning to narrow Cedartown’s lead to 4-2. Another two runs in the bottom of the third for Woodland made the score 7-4 and then the two teams matched single runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth. Cedartown added an insurance run in the top of the seventh for an 11-7 final. Noah Ludy (RBI), Cauy Williams (RBI), and Trenton Harrison (double) finished with three hits each. Garrett Cornett had two hits for the Wildcats. Jacob Frye drove in two runs with one hit. Toby Queen (RBI) and Hunter Reaid had the other Woodland hits. Walker Barrow (triple, RBI), Miles Minge, Henley Haney (2 RBI), and Dalton Prince (2 RBI) combined for seven of the Bulldogs’ eight hits. Bowman picked up the pitching win for Cedartown. Grayson Bagwell was tagged with the pitching loss for the Wildcats. Cedartown improved to 9-1 with their win. Woodland (9-3) plays at Coosa Monday at 4:30pm and will begin Region 7AAAAA play next Friday at Cass at 5:55pm.

Cass and Woodland split a pair of Region 7AAAAA soccer games Friday night with the Lady Colonels taking the girls matchup while the Wildcats were able to shutout Cass in the boys' game. Meanwhile, the Cartersville girls and boys teams swept Sprayberry. CASS GIRLS 5, WOODLAND 3 The Cass girls soccer team defeated region foe, and county rival Woodland Friday night 5-3. Cass led 4-1 at halftime. Logan Vermaas, Brittney Ochoa, Briana Ochoa, and Kelsey Rivera scored the first half goals for the Lady Colonels. Brittney Ochoa and Stephanie Robledo had first half assists. Vermaas added a second half goal for Cass on an assist by Lupita Pineda. Brianna Bullock earned the win in net for the Lady Colonels. Grace Webb scored in the first half for Woodland. Kaitlin Winnenberg scored twice in the second half for the Lady Cats. Woodland falls to 0-7-1 with the loss and hosts Rome Tuesday. The Lady Colonels (3-5) will entertain East Paulding on Tuesday. WOODLAND BOYS 2, CASS 0 Following a scoreless but exciting first half, Woodland’s Miguel Hernandez gave Woodland a 1-0 lead with approximately 30 minutes remaining and Servando Aguirre added an insurance goal 12 minutes later. Cesar Pineda assisted on both Wildcats' goals. Cass remains winless on the season at 0-9. Woodland improves to 4-3-1 and 2-2 in region play. Cass entertains East Paulding and Woodland hosts Rome on Tuesday. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 2, SPRAYBERRY 1 Chloe Davis scored a pair of goals Friday night as the Lady Canes defeated Class 6A Sprayberry 2-1. Davis scored in the game’s 4th minute and again in the 9th minute for Cartersville’s early lead that held up. The opening tally was unassisted. Claire Choate was credited with an assist on the second goal. Sprayberry scored in the first three minutes of the second half to cut the lead in half, but the Lady Canes’ defense was up to the challenge the remainder of the night. Merritt Vance, Livy Romero, Grace Cochran, and Chloe Williams were credited with outstanding defensive play for Cartersville in front of quality saves by keeper Abby Robinson. “The win was a huge win for us against a quality team,” said Lady Canes head coach Chad Murray. “The girls were fired up. I think it showed them a glimpse of what they can accomplish with hard work and a focused team effort. I certainly was proud of the effort and intensity we played with.” CARTERSVILLE BOYS 6, SPRAYBERRY 1 The Cartersville boys soccer team defeated Sprayberry Friday night, 6-1. James Chege put the Canes on the scoreboard in the 3rd minute. Barrett Hester found the net in the 12th minute, and Jake Hacker scored three minutes later as Cartersville took an early 3-0 advantage. Grant Farmer, Jonathan Cruz, and Pedro Robledo had assists on the first half goals. Sprayberry scored in the 25th minute to narrow the Cartersville lead to 3-1 at halftime. In the second half, Cesar Abeja scored in the 43rd minute and the 65th minute on a free kick. Pedro Ghanem also scored a Canes goal in the 44th minute. Pedro Robledo had an assist. Sprayberry is now 1-7 on the season. Cartersville (5-1-1) plays at Central-Carroll Tuesday and at Chapel Hill on Friday.

It took nine innings and both teams had their chances, but it was Adairsville that pushed across three runs in the top of the ninth inning to take an 8-5 win over Cass. The victory earned the Tigers a season split with the Colonels. Cass defeated Adairsville 6-2 back on February 18. Adairsville’s Kyler Pelfrey started the ninth inning rally with a triple and then made it stand up by striking out the side in the bottom half of the ninth. Pelfrey’s triple was followed by an RBI single by Sam Seaman for a 6-5 lead. With two outs, Taylor Whitley walked, Noah Dutton drove in a run with a ground ball single through the middle, and Cody Henderson made it 8-5 with another RBI single into left field. The game went back-and-forth throughout the night with both teams posting runs early. The Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a pair of singles by Corey Nation and Seaman, a double by Hunter Hice, an outfield error, and a ground out RBI by Dutton. Cass answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning. Clay Means singled, Bailey Campbell and Cody Johnson had RBI doubles, and Tyler Henden smacked a two-run homer as the Colonels took a 4-3 lead. Adairsville tied the game 4-4 in the second inning. Garrett Mishoe was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning and eventually scored after an infield error, a Pelfrey single, and an RBI groundout by Nation. The Tigers then took a 5-4 lead in the third inning on an RBI double by Mishoe. Cass scored in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. Means triped with two outs and after Campbell coaxed a walk, Jake Collum drove home the tying run with a liner into right field. Pelfrey (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 4K) picked up the pitching win for Adairsville by pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth. Gibbs (4.2 IP, 4ER, 5H, 0BB) started on the mound for the Tigers and Mishoe (2.1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 6K) entered in the fifth inning. Evan Hinton (1 IP, 3ER, 4H, 1BB, 2K) worked the ninth inning on the mound and was tagged with the pitching loss for the Colonels. Zach Yancey (5 IP, 5R, 3ER, 0BB, 3K) started for Cass and Collum (3 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 6K) pitched the sixth and seventh innings. Seaman (RBI) and Pelfrey had two hits for Adairsville. Nation (RBI), Hice (double, RBI), Dutton (2 RBI), Henderson (RBI), and Mishoe (double, RBI) had one hit each. Means had two hits for Cass. Campbell (double, RBI), Collum (RBI), Johnson (RBI), Hendon (2-run homer), and Yancey had the Colonels other hits. Adairsville improved to 3-6 on the season and has now won three of the last four games. The Tigers play at Coahulla Creek Tuesday, host North Murray Thursday, and travel to Ringgold Friday. All three games are 5:55pm starts. Cass (7-6) begins Region 7AAAAA play Monday at Hiram and will host the Hornets Wednesday to complete the two-game series.

Cartersville fell behind Providence (Jacksonville, FL) 5-0 in the second inning Friday afternoon and fought back hard, before falling 6-4 in the second round of the championship bracket of the 2017 Perfect Game High School Showdown at LakePoint Sports. Providence scored a single run in the top of the first inning and four more in the second. The Hurricanes answered with a pair of runs in the second and one more in the bottom of the third inning to narrow the deficit to 5-3, but a run for Providence in the fifth and one more for Cartersville in the sixth led to a 6-4 final score. Canes’ sophomore pitcher, Mason Barnett (4 IP, 5R, 3ER, 8H, 1BB, 4K), started and was tagged with the loss. Jake Norris (1ER, 1H, 2BB), Levi Ayers (1K), and Spencer Dickey (1H, 1BB) each worked one inning. Elijah Gill (5.1 IP, 4R, 0ER, 7H, 2BB, 6K), a Florida International signee, was the winning pitcher for the Stallions. Florida State signee Alec Sanchez, Florida commit Nathan Hickey, and Cameron Wright combined for six hits and three RBIs for Providence. Jacob Fowler, J.P. Martin, and Noah Daniel each produced a pair of hits. Jake Gooch, Anthony Seigler, and Devin Warner (RBI) each added one hit. Providence advances to play Etowah in the quarterfinals later Friday night. Cartersville (8-2) will play IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL) in a consolation game Saturday morning at 8am at LakePoint.

The Woodland tennis teams split Region 7AAAAA matches with East Paulding Thursday. The Lady Cats swept the Lady Raiders 5-0 while the Raiders defeated the Woodland boys, 4-1. The Adairsville soccer teams split a pair of Region 6AAA games Thursday night at Haralson County. The Lady Tigers blanked Haralson County 9-0 behind a pair of goals from both Chloe Cochran and Katie Lawhorn. Cochran also added one assist. The Lady Rebels remain winless at 0-6 on the season. The Adairsville girls improved to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in region play. The Tigers fell 4-3 at Haralson. Chris Rodriguez, Danny Carillo, and Gabe Sanchez scored for Adairsville. Danny Gonzalez had one assist. The Rebels improved to 2-3-1 for the season. The Adairsville boys are 1-4 overall and 1-2 in region games.

Three different Hurricanes drove in one run each Thursday night to lead the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes past James Clemens High School (Madison, AL) in the opening round of the Perfect Game USA High School Showdown at LakePoint in Emerson, 4-1. The offensive production was plenty for Canes' starting pitcher Anthony Seigler who limited James Clemens to only two hits and did not allow an earned run. Cartersville scored twice in the first inning and added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to upend the Jets. Seigler (7 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB, 9K) struck out nine in his complete game pitching victory. Garrett Brown struck out 12 for James Clemens and allowed only one earned run himself, but was saddled with the tough loss. Cartersville struck first to go ahead in the opening frame. Seigler tripled to open the inning and Noah Daniel reached on a two-base error that scored Seigler’s courtesy runner, John Reed Evans. After Daniel swiped third, Jacob Fowler lined a single into right field to give the Canes a 2-0 lead. James Clemens scored a run in the top of the third without benefit of a hit. A hit batsman eventually came around to score on a Canes’ infield, ground ball error. Cartersville added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jake Gooch doubled home Daniel who had singled to start the inning. Brant Smith reached on an infield single and Spencer Dickey reached on an infield error that allowed pinch-runner Evans to score. Jordan Anderson had the only two Jets’ hits off Seigler. Cartersville (8-1) advances to the PG High School Showdown quarterfinals Friday at 3:30pm to play Providence (Jacksonville, FL) — a team with a pair of Division I pitching prospects and as many as four Division I prospect infielders. CALHOUN 2, WOODLAND 1 A low-scoring pitchers’ duel Thursday ironically came down to too many free passes as visiting Calhoun edged Woodland 2-1. Calhoun scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh off only one hit in the inning. A hit batsman and three walks plated the game-winning run. Both teams struggled to put runs on the board as Woodland starter Trenton Harrison and the combination of Calhoun pitchers Davis Allen and Jackson Braden kept hitters at bay for most of the evening. Woodland took advantage of two errors and a walk in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Hunter Reaid singled with one out and that was followed by a pair of infield errors by the Yellow Jackets. After a strikeout, Noah Ludy coaxed a bases loaded walk to drive in the game’s first run. Calhoun tied the game in the top of the fourth, 1-1. A hit batsman and a fielder’s choice put a Jackets’ base runner in scoring position. That sequence was followed by a ground ball misplayed by the Wildcats that allowed the runner on second to score. Allen (4 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB, 7K) started on the mound for the Yellow Jackets. Braden (3 IP, 0R, 0BB, 1H, 4K) picked up the win in relief. The loss spoiled an outstanding performance by Woodland starting pitcher Trenton Harrison (6.2 IP, 2ER, 4H, 1BB, 8K). Cauy Williams (0.0 IP, 2BB) and Tommy Peed (0.1 IP, 1K) also took the mound for the Wildcats in the seventh inning. Both teams managed only four hits each. Reaid had two hits for Woodland. Harrison and Jacob Frye had the other Wildcats’ hits. Calhoun, ranked 7th in Class AAA, improved to 5-3 with their victory. Woodland (9-2) hosts Cedartown Friday at the Ballpark at Woodland and will travel to Coosa Monday afternoon before opening the region slate Friday, March 17 at Cass.

The Cartersville girls and boys tennis teams swept matches Thursday with Troup County with both teams winning, 5-0. “We focused a great deal on doubles strategies at practice this week,” said Cartersville coach Melissa Moore. “We used those strategies today very successfully.” Moore was also pleased with improved serves from her players. “Our serves were strong all around,” noted the Canes coach. “ I’m proud of the way we played. The entire match was over in less than an hour.” The Lady Canes improved to 4-3 overall and are 1-0 in Region 5AAAA. The boys team is 3-4 overall and 1-0 in region play. The Cass girls and boys tennis teams took a pair of 3-2 wins over East Paulding Tuesday. The girls team winning at home and the boys on the road. “The guys picked up a really big win that gives us a good chance of securing a top three seed in the Region 7AAAAA tournament,” said Cass coach Kevin Cunningham. “East Paulding has a really deep team with some strong kids playing doubles. We’re just lucky to have our leaders — four-year lettermen, Avery (Cornett) and Seth (Colton) playing singles. Now we just need to close the rest of the region schedule strong and get to the tournament peaking at the right time,” the coach concluded.
