Atlanta linebacker Vic Beasley, Jr., who led the NFL in sacks, was selected as the 2016 NFL Most Improved Player of the Year in voting conducted by the Professional Football Writers of America (PFWA). Jordy Nelson, who had a season ending knee injury in the 2015 preseason, was selected the 2016 NFL Comeback Player of the Year in the same release. As a rookie in 2015, Beasley started all 16 games and had four sacks, one interception, two forced fumbles, two passes defended and 27 total tackles. This season, he led the NFL with 15.5 sacks to go with 15 quarterback hits, 10 tackles for loss, six forced fumbles and 39 tackles on the way to PFWA All-NFL and All-NFC honors at outside linebacker. His 15.5 sacks were the second-most in a season in Falcons history, and he had four games with two or more sacks. Beasley became the 10th player in NFL history to post at least three sacks and return a fumble recovery for a touchdown in the same game at Los Angeles in Week 14. He had 3.5 sacks in the Falcons’ game at Denver. He was the NFC Defensive Player of the Month for December after posting six sacks and two forced fumbles. Beasley, who played locally at Adairsville High School and for Clemson University, is the first member of the Atlanta Falcons to receive Most Improved Player of the Year honors.

The Woodland Lady Cats and Wildcats were swept in Region 7AAAAA basketball games Wednesday night in Cobb County. KELL BOYS 98, WOODLAND 66 Demetris Page scored 17 points to lead the Kell Longhorns to a 98-66 home win over visiting Woodland Wednesday night. Kell held leads of 25-9 after one period, 54-31 at halftime, and 79-53 after three quarters. Justice Carter scored a game-high 27 points for Woodland. Justice Hayes followed with 12 points and Trevor Knowles added seven for the Wildcats. The Longhorns improved their Region 7AAAAA leading record to 7-1. Kell is 13-4 overall. The Wildcats (1-13, 0-9) play at home Friday against Villa Rica. KELL GIRLS 43, WOODLAND 15 The Lady Cats struggled to score on the road Wednesday night at Kell, managing only three points in the first half. Kell led 21-3 at halftime and extended that lead to 41-10 through three periods. The Lady Longhorns improved to 9-8 overall and evened their Region 7AAAAA mark at 4-4. Lexie Robinson scored five points for Woodland. Carli Clymer added four. Madgie Robinson scored three points, Morgan Bailey two, and Jamison Kilgo one. The Adairsville, Cartersville, and Cass boys basketball teams each earned wins Tuesday night. The Tigers held off Pickens in a non-region matchup, while Class AAAA 10th-ranked Cartersville rallied in the second half to defeat Troup County and Cass defeated region foe, East Paulding, on the road. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 82, PICKENS 76 The Tigers trailed the Dragons early Tuesday night and found themselves down 18-9 after one quarter, but used a second quarter rally to lead 36-32 at halftime on their way to a six-point, home win. Adairsville led 60-56 through three quarters. Ronald Hardin and Hunter Hice led Adairsville with 20 points each. Cody Henderson followed with 14 points for the Tigers. Horton followed with 15 points — all in the second half. Troup County fell to 7-10 overall and 2-3 in region play. The Cass girls basketball team picked up a Region 7AAAAA road win Tuesday night at East Paulding, but all the other local girls teams were not as successful. CASS GIRLS 64, EAST PAULDING 43 Sharia Wade lead the Lady Colonels with 17 points and Chanel Clemmons scored 13 to help lead Cass to a 21-point Region 7AAAAA road win at East Paulding Tuesday night. Cass led 46-25 at the intermission and pushed their advantage to 55-39 heading into the final eight minutes. Jana Morning and Payton Stoddard added eight points each for Cass. Kyla Michienzi followed with six points, Kyler Trouten five, Aaliyah Curtis three, Lyric Curtis two, and Amber Brittian two points. East Paulding fell to 3-16 overall and 1-10 in Region 7AAAAA. The Cartersville boys and Cass girls picked up victories Saturday in local high school basketball action. The Canes earned a non-region win over Class AAA 8th-ranked Calhoun, while the Lady Colonels won their sixth Region 7-AAAAA game. The Cartersville girls, who lost by a wide margin earlier in the season to 7th-ranked Calhoun, took a tight game deep into the final quarter before succumbing. Meanwhile, the Colonels suffered a costly, Region 7-AAAAA loss at home on Saturday. CASS GIRLS 55, PAULDING COUNTY 40 The Lady Colonels led 17-6 after one quarter and 26-15 at halftime on their way to a home, Region 7-AAAAA win over Paulding County. CARTERSVILLE 79, No. 8 CALHOUN 49 The Purple Hurricanes routed the Class AAA 8th-ranked Yellow Jackets Saturday at the Storm Center, 79-49. Cartersville led 19-13 after one quarter and 37-22 by halftime. The Canes extended their lead to 26 after three periods before winning by 30. Jaylon Pugh scored 18 points to lead Cartersville. He was followed by JKobe Orr with 10, Jacorey Johns and Trase Fezzia with nine each, Daunta Bryan with eight points, and Isaac Gridley with seven. Calhoun, who played without leading scorer Chapin Rierson, is now 12-3 on the season. Cartersville (11-3) hosts Troup Tuesday and Cedartown Friday at the Storm Center. PAULDING COUNTY BOYS 57, CASS 56 After trailing by 15 points in the second half, Cass rallied to take a late lead but the visiting Patriots won on a buzzer-beater, 57-56. Cass played without C.J. Bennett and Steven Spell who were banged up after Friday’s game with Villa Rica. Mark Chester led Cass with 15 points. Ashton Burley scored 13 and Jake Collum 12 for the Colonels in the Region 7-AAAAA loss. Paulding County improved to 6-12 overall and 4-5 in region play. Cass (12-5, 7-2) plays at East Paulding Tuesday and travels to region-leading Kell on Friday. CORNERSTONE PREP ACADEMY BOYS 63, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 37 The Excel Christian Academy boys’ basketball team lost at Cornerstone Prep Academy Saturday, 63-37, in Acworth. Cornerstone held leads of 15-10 after one quarter and 34-22 at halftime, but sealed the outcome by outscoring the Eagles 20-2 in the third period. Romain Gaskin and William Norman led Cornerstone Prep with 18 and 14 points, respectively. Excel was led by Jacob Murray with 11 points and Taylor McDaniel with seven. Cornerstone improved to 7-9 with the win. Excel (0-10) plays at Christian Heritage in Dalton on Tuesday.

The Woodland wrestling team was edged in the state championship match by Buford Saturday to finish as runner-up at the GHSA State Duals Championship for the sixth straight season. Buford won the Class AAAAA title match, 34-30, at the Macon Centreplex. The Wolves had state tournament wins over Arabia Mountain, Veterans, and Union Grove on their way to the finals. Woodland reached the championship match with wins over Harris County, Whitewater, and Ola. Cass placed fourth in the same classification. The Colonels were 4-2 in six dual matches with wins over Decatur, Ware County, Veterans, and Ola. Both losses were to Union Grove. Once in the quarterfinals of the championship bracket on Thursday and the other on Saturday in the Consolation Finals.
