- Results from the Woodland Track & Field Invitational
Woodland High School hosted their 2016 Woodland Track & Field Invitational Saturday (March 26) with twelve teams competing. Among the dozen teams were the local girls and boys squads from Woodland and Cartersville. North Paulding High School won both the girls’ and boys’ championship titles. The Woodland boys finished fifth and the Woodland girls were sixth. Cartersville girls placed ninth and the Cartersville boys were twelfth. Girls Team Scores: 1. North Paulding, 111 points. 2. - Tigers shutout Gordon Central
The Adairsville Tigers made short work of the Gordon Central Warriors Friday night in Calhoun winning 11-0 in five innings. Adairsville’s Sam Seaman earned the complete game victory. He gave up only two hits — both to Gordon Central’s Dawson Cline. Seaman walked one and struck out six. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second and then broke the game open with a six-run third inning. They added four more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Jacob Fowler (4 IP, 7R, 3ER, 5BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for the Warriors. Hayden Morrow went 4-for-4 for Adairsville. He had a double and three RBI. Landon Howren, Justin Green, Orry Carter, Taylor Whitley, and Seaman had the other Tigers’ hits. Adairsville (7-6 overall, 4-2 in 6-AAA) travels to Armuchee Monday (March 28), hosts Murray County Tuesday (March 29), and plays at Calhoun Thursday (March 31).
- Mowry's extra time goal lifts Lady Canes
Cartersville’s Marissa Mowry scored in extra time to give the soccer Lady Canes a 2-1 win a Northwest Whitfield Friday night. The win moved Cartersville within one win of clinching the Region 7-AAAA title with Heritage-Catoosa remaining on the region slate next Tuesday (March 29). Courtney Rhea scored in the first half for the Lady Canes to take a 1-0 lead to the intermission, but the Lady Bruins scored early in the second half to tie the match 1-1. The game remained tied until Mowry’s goal in the first minute of extra time. Abby Robinson picked up the win in goal. Cartersville (10-1 overall, 6-0 in 7-AAAA) has won nine in a row and plays at Heritage-Catoosa Tuesday at 5:30pm. The Lady Canes then have non-region matches at Marietta and at Woodland on Thursday and Friday. NORTHWEST WHITFIELD 2, CANES 0 The Cartersville boys soccer team lost a region match at Northwest Whitfield Friday night, 2-0, to the unbeaten Bruins. Northwest Whitfield, the leaders in the region, improved to 12-0-1 on the season and 6-0 in Region 7-AAAA matches. Cartersville (8-3, 4-2) plays a final region match at Heritage-Catoosa Tuesday (March 29) and has non-region matches at home Thursday (March 31) against Marietta and at Woodland on Friday (April 1).
- Calhoun MS soccer teams win '16 BGMSAA titles
The soccer teams at Calhoun Middle School won the 2016 Bartow-Gordon Middle School Athletic Association titles Friday in championship games played at Calhoun. The middle school Lady Jackets (9-0-1) were able to pull off an overtime penalty kicks victory over Ashworth after the two teams played to a scoreless tie in regulation. - Wildcats, Colonels lose sub-region games Friday
CREEKVIEW 9, WOODLAND 7 Woodland pounded out 15 hits Friday night at home against Creekview, but the Grizzlies grabbed an early lead and held off the Wildcats late for a 9-7 sub-region win. Creekview scored seven runs in the first three innings, but Woodland did not go away. The Wildcats scored six runs of their own in the first four innings to only trail 7-6 after five innings. The Grizzlies added one run in both the sixth and seventh innings to seal their win. Jacob Frye, Grant Robinson, and Trent Harrison had three hits each for Woodland. Robinson and Harrison both finished with three RBI. Frye also drove in a run. Mitchell Taylor and Garrett Cornett had two hits each for the Wildcats. Grayson Bagwell and Noah Ludy added one hit apiece. Garrett Pope (1.2 IP, 6R, 3ER, 5H, 0BB) was the starter and loser on the mound for Woodland. He did not make it through the second inning. Rodolpho Romo (5.1 IP, 3R, 2ER, 4H, 2BB, 3K) finished the game. Woodland (2-12 overall, 1-10 in 7-AAAAA-A) plays Troy (OH) High School Tuesday (March 29), and Kell on Thursday. The two home games are scheduled for 5:55pm starts. DALTON 8, CASS 4 Dalton finished a three-game sweep of Cass Friday night in Dalton, 8-4. The Catamounts took a 5-0 lead after two innings and then held off the Colonels to improve to 12-2 overall and 8-1 in 7-AAAAA-A. Cass scored two runs in the third inning to narrow the Dalton advantage to 5-2. Two hit batsmen and a walk loaded the bases for the Colonels. Boo Reed reached on an error by the shortstop scoring Bailey Campbell, then Nathan Smith drove home Jake Collum with a single to right field. After Dalton answered with a run in the bottom of the third, Cass scored again in the top of the fourth on a pair of walks and a Dalton infield error to cut the lead to 6-3. Dalton added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 8-3 and Reed drove in the Colonels’ final run in the seveneth with an infield hit that followed a pair of walks and a fielder’s choice. Brock Nelson had two hits that included a homerun and five RBI to lead the Catamounts’ offense. J.P. Tighe also homered for Dalton. Campbell, Reed (2 RBI), Smith (RBI), Casey Patterson, and Cody Johnson had one hit each for Cass. Jake Collum (4.1 IP, 8R, 2ER, 11H, 2BB, 5K) was the Colonels’ starter on the mound and was saddled with the pitching loss. Austin Pruett (0.2 IP, 0R, 0BB, 1K) and Reed (1 IP, 0R, 3K, 0BB) recorded the final three outs. Cass (4-10 overall, 3-6 in 7-AAAAA-A) has a three-game sub-region series with River Ridge next week. Cass plays at home Monday (March 28) and Friday (April 1). The Knights will host Cass on Wednesday (March 30). All three games are scheduled for 5:55pm starts.
- Errors costly as Canes fall at Pickens
Pickens rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh Friday night to win in come-from-behind fashion over the visiting Cartersville Purple Hurricanes, 3-2. Three errors, a bunt single, two walks, and two wild pitches led to the Dragons’ three runs in the seventh. In all, the Canes committed seven errors on the evening. Cartersville scored twice in the top of the first for a lead they took to the final inning despite not getting another hit in the game. Elliott Anderson singled with one out to get the Canes started in the first inning. Devin Warner followed with a double, moving Anderson’s courtesy runner, Seth Smith, to third. Smith scored on a single by Carrington Evans and Warner crossed the plate after a passed ball to give Cartersville a 2-0 lead. Travis Huffman (7 IP, 2R, 1ER, 3H, 2BB, 10K) picked up the complete game pitching win for the Dragons. Pickens improved to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in Region 7-AAAA with the victory. Anderson (6.1 IP, 3R, 0ER, 3H, 4BB, 6K) suffered the pitching loss. Mason Barnett entered to pitch in the seventh and walked two without recording an out. Cartersville (6-7 overall, 2-1 in Region 7-AAAA) will host Ridgeland at Richard Bell Field Tuesday (March 29) at 5:55pm. Southeast Whitfield visits Cartersville Thursday (March 31), and the Canes travel to Heritage-Catoosa on Friday (April 1).
- Soccer Lady Cats blank Coosa
The Woodland girls soccer team blanked Coosa in a non-region match Friday night, 10-0. The game was shortened by mercy rule with just over 26 minutes remaining. The Lady Cats led 8-0 at halftime. Madison Bennett and Sam Simmons scored two goals each for Woodland. Allie Moates, Molly Plott, MacKenzie Lanham, Jordan Evans, Keri Cagle, and Kylie Knox also scored goals. Lindsay Scifers and Simmons contributed a pair of assists each. Kaitlin Winnenberg also had an assist. Esmeralda Hernandez and Amy Moreno shared the victory in goal for the Lady ' Cats. Woodland (5-6) hosts Creekview Tuesday (March 29) and Cartersville Friday (April 1). The Woodland boys soccer game at Coosa has been rescheduled for April 14. ROME 12, CASS LADY COLONELS 2 Cass girls soccer team lost 12-2 at Rome Thursday night. Rome improved to 10-2-1 overall and 4-2 in sub-region 7-AAAAA-A. The Lady Colonels (3-8-1, 0-5 in 7-AAAAA-A) host North Springs Friday. SONORAVILLE 5, ADAIRSVILLE TIGERS 1 The Sonoraville boys improved to 8-1 with their Region 6-AAA win over Adairsville Thursday. Adairsville (5-4) plays at North Murray Thursday, March 31.
- Local high school top track and field performances for 2016
There were six changes in this week's update of the top local high school track and field performances of the 2016 season and three were recorded by members of the Cass boys' team. Terry Beardin improved his 100 meter time, Laizon West ran a new fastest time of the season in the 200 meters, and Diunte Ward had the best mark of the year in the triple jump. Skylar Chappell of Woodland set a new county best mark in the discus throw. Sabrina Buggs (Cass) now holds the best local mark in the 100M and Cartersville's Grace Cochran has the new 400M mark. - Tigers drop close game to Missouri club
The Adairsville Tigers lost to Jefferson City (MO) 3-1 Thursday in a matchup played at LakePoint in Emerson. The two teams combined for only one earned run, but the Jays were more opportunistic. Jefferson City scored a run in the second inning and two more in the third to take a 3-0 lead that held up. Adairsville managed their only run in the top of the sixth when Drake Arp reached on a fielder’s choice and later scored after Sam Seaman singled and the Jays’ center fielder committed a two-base error. Jefferson City’s two-run second inning was the result of two hits and a pair of passed balls. Their third inning run scored following a double, infield error, wild pitch, and a ground out. The Tigers committed five errors in the contest. Jefferson City had three miscues. Four different players -- Tyler Bise, Grant Wood, Kade Feanks, and Hayden Hieschrogel -- had one hit each for Jefferson City. Seaman had two hits for Adairsville. Justin Green, Landon Howren, and Hayden Morrow added one hit apiece. Blane Meyer (6 IP, 1R, 0ER, 5H, 0BB, 4K) was the winning pitcher for the Jays. Logan Schmite (1 IP, 0R, 0BB, 0H, 1K) worked the final inning for a save. Orry Carter (3 IP, 3R, 1ER, 3H, 1BB, 2K) was the tough luck losing pitcher for the Tigers. Taylor Whitley (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 3K) pitched the final three frames for Adairsville. The Tigers (6-6) return to Region 6-AAA play Friday (5:55pm) at Gordon Central and are scheduled to play at Armuchee Monday at 5:30 in another non-region matchup.
- Cartersville tennis teams finish region slate unbeaten
The Cartersville High tennis teams swept Heritage-Catoosa Wednesday to both complete the Region 7-AAAA regular season undefeated in region matches. The Lady Canes are 10-1 overall on the season. The Canes are 8-3 overall. Both Cartersville teams will be the top seed in the upcoming Region 7-AAAA tournament. - Canes defeat NW Whitfield; Woodland edged late; Colonels fall to Dalton
Cartersville made the most of only four hits Wednesday night at Richard Bell Field to defeat Region 7-AAAA visitor Northwest Whitfield, 5-1. The visiting Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the third, but the Canes scored four times in the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth to nab the win. Cartersville needed only two hits in the fifth to go up 4-1. The big blow was a two-run double by Elliott Anderson. J.P. Martin also had a bunt single in the inning. The Canes took advantage of a hit batsman and two errors. Cole Jamieson also had a sacrifice fly RBI in the inning. The Canes added a sixth inning run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Trevor Lowe that scored Zach Yancey. Jacob Fowler doubled in the inning to set up the sac fly. Meanwhile, the combined pitching efforts of Yancey and Spencer Dickey kept the Bruins off the board for most of the evening. Yancey (5 IP, 1ER, 6H, 1BB, 2K) earned the win on the mound. Dickey (2 IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K) worked two clean innings to close out the game. Andrew Ashe (6IP, 5R, 3ER, 4H, 3BB, 5K) was the losing pitcher for Northwest Whitfield. Woodland scored three runs in the first to take an early lead. Jacob Frye was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Grant Robinson singled to left and Trent Harrison connected on a 2 RBI-double to score Frye and Robinson. After Cauy Williams walked, Noah Ludy singled home Harrison for a 3-0 lead. Creekview scored single runs in the second and fourth innings to cut the Wildcats’ lead to 3-2, then scored twice in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Woodland answered with a run in the top of the seventh to tie the game 4-4. Robinson doubled to left field, advanced to third base on a passed ball, and scored on a Brandon Allen single to left. The Grizzlies, however, would win the game in the bottom of the seventh. Back-to-back hits with one out left first base open with runners at second and third. Woodland elected to intentionally walk the next batter, loading the bases. Ryan Stubbs reached on an infield hit that scored Kyle Wilkie and Creekview had a 5-4 victory. Stubbs and Wilkie combined for six hits, three runs scored, and three RBI to lead the Grizzlies’ offense. Hudson Cloud (3 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 0BB, 5K) picked up the pitching win for Creekview in relief of starter, Zach McClure (4 IP, 3ER, 5H, 2BB, 4K). Kolby Stansel (3 IP, 3ER, 6H, 2BB, 1K) suffered the pitching loss for Woodland in relief of starter Mitchell Taylor (3.1 IP, 2ER, 6H, 0BB, 1K). Robinson was 3-for-4 and scored two runs for the Wildcats. Ludy had two hits and a pair of RBI. Harrison and Allen had the other Woodland hits. Woodland (2-12 overall, 1-10 in 7-AAAAA-A) hosts Creekview (6-9, 5-6) in the series finale’ Friday at 5:55pm. DALTON 15, CASS 2 Dalton pounded out a dozen hits and took advantage of a few Cass mistakes to rout the Colonels in five innings, 15-2. The visiting Catamounts took charge early with a four-run opening inning, but Cass responded with two runs in the bottom of the second to narrow the margin to 4-2. Casey Patterson homered to lead off the inning and the Colonels added another run on a Boo Reed double that was followed by an RBI-single by Nathan Smith. Dalton scored 11 runs over the next three innings to end the contest. The Colonels’ Evan Hinton (3.1 IP, 12R, 9ER, 10H, 1BB, 4K) suffered the pitching loss. Cody Johnson (1 IP, 3R, 2ER, 2BB, 1K) and Owen Means (0.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB) also saw some mound time. Brock Nelson (5 IP, 2ER, 4H, 1BB, 1K) collected the pitching win for Dalton with a shortened, complete game effort. Nelson also led Dalton at the plate with four hits and one RBI. J.P. Tighe had two hits and three RBI and Sam Stepp also contributed a pair of hits and one RBI. The Catamounts improved to 11-2 overall and 7-1 in 7-AAAAA-A. Cass fell to 4-9 overall and 3-5 in sub-region games. The two teams play again Friday at Dalton at 5:55pm.
