  • Lady Cats collect win at Dalton

    The Woodland girls soccer team picked up a Sub-Region 7-AAAAA-A road victory Tuesday evening at Harmon Field in Dalton, 6-1. The victory avenged an overtime loss to the Lady Catamounts one season ago. Dalton (2-5-1 overall, 1-5 in 7-AAAAA-A) scored the game’s first goal in the 11th minute on a crossing shot to the left side, but Woodland roared back with six unanswered goals and keeper Sam Simmons and the defense in front of her recorded a shutout the rest of the way. Lindsay Scifers, coming off an injury suffered against Sequoyah, scored to tie the game 1-1 in the 31st minute off a corner kick from Keri Cagle. Kaitlin Winnenberg found the net in the final minute of the first half to give the Lady Cats a 2-1 lead at the intermission. Cagle scored to open the second half on a pass from Amy Moreno in the 45th minute. Freshman Molly Plott scored the first goal of her high school career unassisted in the 64th minute. Winnenberg scored her second goal of the night unassisted with 16:20 remaining, and Allie Moates rounded out Woodland’s scoring with a header goal off a nice pass from Winnenberg in the game’s 72nd minute. The Lady Cats improved to 4-6 overall and 2-3 in 7-AAAAA-A with the road win. The Woodland boys (0-9, 0-5) fell to Dalton in the nightcap, 10-0. The Catamounts remained unbeaten in region play. Woodland plays non-region matches at Coosa Friday evening.

  • Canes open region play with win at Gilmer

    A six-run fifth inning propelled the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes to an 8-1 Region 7-AAAA win over Gilmer in Ellijay Tuesday night. It was the region opener for both teams. The Canes scored their fifth inning runs on an error, a three-run triple by Zach Yancey, an RBI double by Spencer Dickey, and a sacrifice fly by Jacob Fowler. The offensive onslaught broke open a 1-0 game and gave Cartersville a 7-0 lead at the time. The Bobcats (3-7 overall, 0-1 in 7-AAAA) scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Canes got that run back the next inning on an RBI double by Cole Jamieson. Freshman starter, Mason Barnett (5 IP, 1R, 0ER, 4H, 2BB, 4K) collected his third pitching victory of the year. Yancey (1 IP, 0R, 0BB, 2K) and Dickey (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB) closed out the game in relief. Cartersville (5-6, 1-0) pounded out ten hits in the contest. Carrington Evans (RBI), Parker Tidwell, and Jamieson (RBI) had two hits each for the Canes. Elliott Anderson (RBI), Fowler (RBI), Dickey (RBI), and Yancey (3 RBI) had the other Cartersville hits. Drew Healan had two hits and one RBI for Gilmer. Noah Ralston, Avery Sirmans, and Chandler Sution had the other Bobcat hits. The Canes are scheduled to host Northwest Whitfield Wednesday (March 23) and travel to Jasper to take on Pickens on Friday (March 25). Both games are scheduled for 5:55pm starts.

    The Cartersville High School tennis teams took one step closer Monday to clinching the top seed in their region tournament. The Cartersville girls blanked Lafayette, while the boys won 4-1. LADY CANES 5, LAFAYETTE 0 SINGLES 1 — Emma McCary won 6-0, 6-0 2 — Ansley Thompson won 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 3 — Kenly King won 6-0, 6-1 DOUBLES 1 — Kendyl Westmoreland/Jordan Ross won 6-4, 6-0 2 — Taylor Riddle/Kindra Woodman won 7-6, 6-4 CANES 4, LAFAYETTE 1 SINGLES 1 — Matthew Slocum won 6-3, 6-1 2 — Davis Edwards won 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 3 — Will Allen won 6-1, 6-3 DOUBLES 1 — Russell Mathison/Ross Norwood lost 4-6, 2-6 2 — Juan Zazueta/Mason Andrews won 1-6, 6-2, 10-5 Both Cartersville tennis teams are 6-0 in Region 7-AAAA competition. The Lady Canes are 9-1 overall and the Canes are 7-3. They host Heritage-Catoosa Wednesday where a win clinches the top spot from the region heading into the region playoffs.

  • Cass tennis teams wrap up season with wins over ECA

    The Cass High tennis teams closed out their 2016 seasons Monday at Hamilton Crossing Park with wins over visiting Excel Christian Academy. The girls team won 3-2. The boys were 5-0 winners. CASS LADY COLONELS 3, EXCEL 2 SINGLES 1 — Ryleigh Lanham won 6-1, 6-0 2 — Morgan Hughes won 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 3 — Callie Dodd lost 0-6, 2-6 DOUBLES 1 — Emma Wickenheiser/Kara Bowen lost 2-6, 2-6 2 — Hallie Gore/Maggie Collum won 6-2, 6-2 CASS COLONELS 5, EXCEL 0 SINGLES 1 — Dalton Jackson won 6-3, 6-0 2 — Eric Dunlap won 6-2, 6-1 3 — Jacob McBrayer won 6-3, 6-1 DOUBLES 1 — Logan Barrere/Nathan Colston won 7-6, 6-1 2 — Cass won by forfeit

  • Colonels lose at Dalton

    Dalton’s eight-run second inning was enough to put visiting Cass away early Monday night in the first game of a three-game sub-region series. Dalton went on to defeat the Colonels, 14-2, in five innings. Cole Shelton (5 IP, 2R, 0ER, 3H, 1BB, 6K) was the complete game winner for the Catamounts. Cass pitcher, Austin Pruett, took the loss lasting only 1-1/3 innings. He walked two, struck out two, and allowed four runs. The Catamounts took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but it was three singles, a double, and five walks that led to Dalton’s second inning barrage that put the game away. Dalton added four more runs in the third inning and one in the fourth. The Colonels managed only three hits, scoring single runs in the third and fifth innings. Bailey Campbell, Steven Spell, and Casey Patterson had the Cass hits. Campbell and Jake Collum had one RBI each. J.P. Tighe, Shelton, and Sam Stepp combined for nine hits and ten RBI to lead the Catamounts’ offense. Dalton (10-2 overall, 6-1 Sub-Region 7-AAAAA-A) visits Cass (4-8, 3-4) Wednesday for the second game in the series. The two teams play a third game Friday back in Dalton.

  • GHC softball splits DH with South Georgia

    Georgia Highlands softball split a doubleheader with South Georgia State, losing 4-0 in the opener and winning 4-2 in the second game. Rebecca Meade allowed only one earned run on six hits in a complete game effort in the opener, but was saddled with the loss. She struck out five. Meade earned a save in Game 2 in relief of Natalie Pederson. She allowed no hits and struck out two in 2 and 1/3 innings of work. Pederson picked up her first conference win of the year with her 5 and 2/3 inning effort. She scattered eight hits and yielded no earned runs. Caitlin Parks was 4-for-7 in the doubleheader. Lauren Womack was 3-for-7 and scored a run. Carlee Thurmond contributed a pair of RBI and scored a run in Game 2. Bre Fickes and Mallory Jackson drove in runs. Madison Gianfala and Kaleigh Mobly scored the other Chargers’ runs. GHC is back in action Tuesday against Motlow State in a doubleheader in McMinnville, TN. First pitch is set for 1pm. The Chargers also travel to USC Salkehatchie Thursday for a doubleheader.

  • Woodland loses early lead; Excel topped by King's Ridge

    King’s Ridge scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings on their way to a 13-1 win over Excel Christian Academy Monday night at LakePoint in Emerson. The visiting Tigers scored five runs in the first inning, two in the second, four in the third, and two more in the fourth inning. ECA scored in third inning when Michael Hogan scored on a bases loaded walk to Wyatt Karlovich. Hogan singled to center field to open the frame, then moved to second on a groundout by Jordan Wilkie. One of two hits on the night by Trace Still loaded the bases. Michael Wein and Austin Bridges combined for six hits and five RBI to lead the Tigers, who pounded out 16 hits by eleven different players. Carter Buchanan (5 IP, 1ER, 3H, 3BB, 7K) pitched a complete, shortened game to pick up the win for King’s Ridge. Excel utilized four pitchers. Marco Haro (2 IP, 5ER, 9H, 1BB, 2K), Aaron Pumphrey (0.1 IP, 3ER, 2H, 1BB), Karlovich (0.2 IP, 1ER, 1H, 0BB, 1K), and Still (2 IP, 2R, 0ER, 4H, 1BB, 2K) shared the mound duties. King’s Ridge improved to 11-2 with the win, 8-1 in Region 6-A. The loss was the sixth straight for the Eagles (1-9, 0-9). Excel plays Pinecrest Academy Tuesday (March 22) and Mount Pisgah Christian Thursday (March 24). Both games are at LakePoint in Emerson and are scheduled for 5:30pm starts. CREEKVIEW 5, WOODLAND 3 Woodland pushed three runs across in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead, but the visiting Grizzlies managed three runs in the third single runs in the fifth and seventh to defeat the Wildcats Monday night, 5-3. Creekview pitcher Michael Patterson (7 IP, 3R, 2ER, 8H, 0BB, 7K) earned the win with a complete game. Woodland hurler Cauey Williams (4.1 IP, 4R, 1ER, 6H, 1BB, 2K) was dealt the pitching loss. Rodolpho Romo (2.2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 0BB, 1K) worked in relief for the Cats. The Wildcats scored three times in the first inning on five hits and an infield error. Brandon Allen’s two-run double followed singles by Jacob Frye, Hunter Reaid, and Trent Harrison. Allen later scored on an error by the Grizzlies shortstop. Noah Ludy also singled in the inning. Frye was the only Wildcat with two hits. Garrett Cornett and Romo added one hit each for Woodland. Creekview improved to 5-9 overall and 4-6 in Sub-Region 7-AAAAA-A. Woodland (2-11, 1-9) travels to Creekview Wednesday and hosts the third game of the sub-region series Friday. Both games are 5:55pm starts.

  • Chargers sweep Darton Sunday to split opening conference series

    The Georgia Highlands Chargers swept an important doubleheader Sunday in Albany to split a four-game conference series with the Darton College Cavaliers. Georgia Highlands won 7-5 and 5-4 Sunday after dropping the first two games of the series, 5-2 and 11-3. In Sunday’s first game victory, Daniel Gooden, Brandon Bell, and Brandon Etheridge combined for seven hits. Gooden and Drew Davis drove in two runs apiece, and Zach McCrum, Jonathan White, and Tristan Roberts added one RBI each. The Chargers took a 4-0 lead early and pushed their lead to 6-2 before the Cavaliers struck for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. GHC added an insurance run in the sixth and held on for a two-run win. Colby Taylor (1 IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB) was credited with the pitching win in relief of starter Bryan Quillens (4.2 IP, 3ER, 7H, 0BB, 6K). Will Griffin pitched the seventh inning, walked one, allowed one hit, but struck out the side for a save. In Sunday’s second game, Georgia Highlands took a 5-0 lead in the third frame and held on for a 5-4 win. The Chargers made the most of five hits. Davis homered and doubled, Etheridge (triple), McCrum, and Mitch Burger had the other base hits. Casey Collins (5 IP, 1ER, 5H, 1BB, 3K) started and picked up the pitching victory. Colby Taylor and Sam Sowerbrower got the Chargers through the sixth inning and Griffin (1 IP, 2ER, 3H, 0BB, 2K) added another save in the seventh. Georgia Highlands (17-15, 2-2 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association) plays at East Georgia CC March 29 and hosts EGCC April 1-2.

  • Justus, Robinson hot at plate; Ledbetter makes collegiate debut to highlight this week's basebal

    Former Cass Colonels pitcher, Cody Ledbetter, made his collegiate pitching debut last week for the Young Harris College Mountain Lions. Connor Justus (Georgia Tech), had eight hits during the week to lead the Yellow Jackets and Mason Robinson (Wallace State CC-Dothan) had a seven-hit week for the Governors. They salvaged one of three games at Ferrum and defeated Sewanee. Dempsey added four RBI, scored a run, and walked twice during the week. Demsey has a .328 batting average, nine RBI, and six stolen bases for the season. Maryville (18-6 overall, 8-4 USA South Athletic Conference) hosts Berry College March 22 and entertains Huntingdon College in a three-game series March 25-26. BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Georgia Highlands CC (Soph., Cass HS) . . .went 5-for-15 in a four-game series with conference rival Darton College this past week, scoring three runs and driving in three. Etheridge has a .314 batting average with seven RBI and six stolen bases on the season. The Chargers (17-15 overall, 2-2 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Assocation) plays at East Georgia CC March 29 and hosts EGCC April 1-2. TY FOWLER — Tennessee Wesleyan College (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . walked one and struck out one in a ninth inning relief appearance March 19 during a 9-4 home win over Reinhardt University. Tennessee Wesleyan swept Reinhardt and improved to 18-7 overall and 8-1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Fowler has pitched 5 and 1/3 innings in four appearances with a 3.38 ERA and a .273 batting average against. The Bulldogs host a doubleheader with Midland University March 23 and a three-game conference series against 23rd-ranked Bryan College March 25-26. ROBERT HARRIS — Troy University (Jr., Adairsville HS) . . . worked the seventh and eighth innings March 19 during a 7-0 loss at Georgia Southern University. Harris allowed a pair of hits and two earned runs. He has thrown 13 and 2/3 innings in eight appearances for the Trojans with a 5.27 ERA. Troy (12-9 overall, 3-3 Sun Belt Conference) entertains Alabama A&M March 22 and plays at Arkansas-Little Rock for a three-game conference series March 24-26. HARRISON HATFIELD — Shorter University (Soph, Cartersville HS) . . . went 1-for-5 with a walk and scored a run in a pair of home games during a series with Lee Univeristy March 19-20. He has a .973 fielding percentage in 37 chances this season as a middle infielder. Shorter (10-16 overall, 4-11 Gulf South Conference) was swept by Lee. The Hawks host Lincoln Memorial University March 23 and conference opponent, Alabama-Huntsville in a three-game series March 25-26. BRADLEY HOOD — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., Cass HS) . . . made a 2 inning relief appearance March 19 at Darton allowing an earned run on a hit and three walks. He struck out two. Hood has made nine appearances and pitched 10 innings with a 3.60 ERA. The Chargers (17-15 overall, 2-2 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Assocation) plays at East Georgia CC March 29 and hosts EGCC April 1-2. TRIPP JAMIESON — Univ. of the Cumberlands (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . went 2-for-11 with a pair of RBI during the Patriots’ 1-5 week. Cumberlands was swept in a three-game series at No. 1 in NAIA, Faulkner (AL) University, and salvaged one win in a three-game home series with Shawnee State University. In 21 games and 16 starts, Jamieson has a .250 batting average with two homers and 14 RBI. The Patriots (19-10 overall, 3-3 Mid-South Conference) play at Union (KY) College March 23 and at 8th-ranked Lindsey Wilson for a three-game series March 25-26. CONNOR JUSTUS — Georgia Tech (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . went 2-for-4, scored a run and drove in one in a 14-3 loss to Auburn March 15, then went 6-for-12, scoring five runs with a pair of walks and three RBI in a three-game conference sweep of visiting Virginia Tech March 18-20. Justus leads the Yellow Jackets with a .416 batting average and has started all 19 games. He has two homers, 16 RBI, and has stolen four bases. 25th-ranked Georgia Tech (15-4 overall, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) plays at Kennesaw State March 22 and makes the trip to Chapel Hill, NC to face the North Carolina Tar Heels in a three-game, ACC series March 24-26. CODY LEDBETTER — Young Harris College (Fr., Cass HS) . . . made his collegiate debut March 15 working an inning and one-third during a 20-12 home loss to Mars Hill College. He allowed a hit, a walk, and two earned runs. Ledbetter struck out one batter. The Mountain Lions (9-17 overall, 4-11 Peach Belt Conference) entertain UNC-Pembroke in a three-game conference series March 25-27. SEAN McDERMOTT — Cleveland State CC (Fr., Adairsville HS) . . . started four of five games for the Cougars last week as they went 4-1. McDurmott was 6-for-16, scored three runs with a homerun and three RBI. Cleveland State CC swept a home doubleheader with Tusculum College JV March 16 and won two of three at Southwest Tennessee CC March 18-19. McDurmott has appeared in 23 games this season and has a .364 batting average. He has two homeruns, 15 RBI, and has scored 15 runs. The Cougars (15-10 overall, 6-3 Tennessee Community College Athletic Association) host Chattanooga State CC March 24-25 in a three-game series. CHRIS MORTON — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., Cass HS) . . . made a relief appearance, allowing two hits and a pair of unearned runs in a home, 5-2 loss to Darton College March 15. Morton has made five pitching appearances for 2.1 innings pitched and has not allowed an earned run. The Chargers (17-15 overall, 2-2 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Assocation) plays at East Georgia CC March 29 and hosts EGCC April 1-2. HUNTER OSBORN — Reinhardt University (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . suffered his first pitching loss of the year at Tennessee Wesleyan College March 18. The right-handed starter went five innings, allowed four earned runs on six hits and four walks. He struck out four. Osborn is 4-1 as a starter with a 1.95 ERA. The Eagles (20-10 overall, 5-4 Appalachian Athletic Conference) host Taylor University (IN) March 23 and travel to Milligan College (TN) for a three-game conference series March 25-26. MASON ROBINSON — Wallace State-Dothan CC (Soph., Woodland HS) . . . was 7-for-15 with four doubles and a homerun last week at the Governors defeated Black Hawk College and split a four-game conference series with Chattahoochee Valley CC. Robinson has a .263 batting average, two homers, 13 runs scored, seven RBI, and five stolen bases in 23 games. WSCC-Dothan (16-10 overall, 4-4 Alabama Community College Conference) plays at Andrew College March 22 and will play a four-game series with Bishop State CC March 24-26. TRISTON SMITH — Young Harris College (Soph., Adairsville HS) . . . started four games and appeared in five last week. He went 6-for-17 at the plate, scored twice, and drove in one run as the Mountain Lions lost twice to Mars Hill and won one of three games at Francis Marion University. Smith has a .343 batting average in 35 at bats across eight appearances. Young Harris College (9-17 overall, 4-11 Peach Belt Conference) entertains UNC-Pembroke in a three-game conference series March 25-27. JO JO UNDERWOOD — University of North Carolina-Greensboro (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . had a hit in a 16-4 home win over Marist March 20. Underwood is 2-for-9 in nine appearances for the Spartans. UNCG (15-5) won all four games last week, defeating University of Maryland-Eastern Shore and sweeping a three game series with Marist. Greensboro plays North Carolina A&T March 22 at Bridge Bank Park in Greensboro and will host Georgetown March 24-26. TYLER WILL — Berry College (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . made a one-inning relief appearance during a 3-2 win over Covenant College March 15. He allowed a hit, but faced only three batters due to a double play. In seven relief appearances, Will has worked seven innings with three strikeouts, a save, and a 3.86 ERA. Berry (17-8 overall, 4-5 Southern Athletic Association) travels to Maryville (TN) College March 22 before hosting a three-game conference series with Rhodes College, March 25-26. CHAZ WILSON — Columbus State University (Jr., Cass HS) . . . made one relief appearance tossing a spotless eighth inning with two strikeouts in a 9-8 home loss to 25th-ranked Lander March 18. The 7th-ranked Cougars were only 1-3 for the week, losing a non-conference game to Lee University and won only one of three at home against conference leading Lander University. Wilson has pitched 12 and 1/3 innings in eight relief appearances. He has struck out 13 and has a .214 batting average against with a 4.38 ERA. Columbus State (21-7 overall, 9-3 Peach Belt Conference) plays Point University at home March 23 before traveling to Flagler College for a three-game PBC series in St. Augustine, FL, March 25-26.

  • Gollhofer earns Mid-American Conference Player of Week honors; ABB updates for track, tennis, and ba

    Ball State freshman, Peyton Gollhofer, headlines this week's updates for local Bartow County athletes competing at the collegiate level in track and field, tennis, and basketball for the week ending March 20. Adrian Rodgers, a basketball senior for Southern University, competed in the NCAA Men's Championship Tournament last week and former Excel basketball player, Elijah Robinson, earned a national championship ring with Emmanuel College as the Lions won the NCCAA title. TRACK AND FIELD ROGER HERRERA — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . distance runner, placed 18th (36:20.14) in the 10,000 meter run at the Emory Invitational March 18-19. The Eagles run next at Barron Stadium in Rome in the Shorter Invitational March 26. ANNA HIGHTOWER — Georgia Tech (Fr., Cartersville HS) . . . pole vaulter, placed ninth in the women’s Section B Plole Vault with a vault of 11 feet 7.75 inches at John Mitchell Alabama Relays March 17-19 in Tuscaloosa. BLAKE PERRY — Jacksonville State (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . placed 30th (15.60) in the 100 meter hurdles at John Mitchell Alabama Relays March 17-19 in Tuscaloosa. The Gamecocks compete March 25-26 at the Emory Classic in Atlanta. TENNIS PEYTON GOLHOFFER — Ball State (Fr., Laurel Springs Academy, Cartersville resident) . . . Gollhofer, a true freshman went 3-0 last week at the No. 1 singles position to earn Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week. She took down all of her opponents in straight sets. Gollhofer began the week with a 6-3, 6-4 win, over South Dakota's Ellie Burns. She then took down Norfolk State’s Dajana Cvjetkovic , 6-3, 6-1, and added a 6-3, 7-5 victory over James Madison's Timea Guibe. Over the weekend, she added a 6-2, 6-2 singles win and played in an unfinished No. 1 line doubles match as the Cardinals defeated Wright State, 6-1, on March 18. With the victories, Gollhofer improved to 10-2 in dual action and 18-4 overall. She helped Ball State extend their win streak to ten and improve its overall record to 12-2 on the season. BSU is scheduled to host Western Michigan March 25 and Northern Illinois March 27. BASKETBALL ADRIAN RODGERS — Southern University (Sr., Cartersville, GA resident; Centennial HS; Maine Central Prep) . . .led his team with 14 points, six rebounds, and four assists in an NCAA Tournament opening round 59-55 loss to Holy Cross in Dayton, OH. A starting shooting guard, Rodgers helped lead the Jaguars to a 22-13 overall record and a Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament championship in 2015-16. In 35 games, he averaged 16.6 points and 5.4 rebounds. Rodgers shot 41 percent from the floor and 79 percent from the free throw line. ELIJAH ROBINSON — Emmanual College (Jr., Excel Christian Academy) . . . scored 17 points in three games, including 12 against Grace (Ind.) in the semifinals, as the Lions won the 2016 National Christian Colleges Athletic Association National Championship in Winona Lake, Indiana. Robinson averaged 18 minutes per game in the national championship tournament as Emmanuel defeated Central Christian (Kans.), Grace, and Southwestern Christian (Tex.) to win the national title. He added six rebounds, four assists, and one steal during the tournament. For the season, Robinson averaged 8.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game in 31 games. The Lions finished the year 27-5.
