The No. 6 seeded Chargers (24-26) rallied from behind to knock off No. 3 seed Georgia Perimeter College (31-25) in opening round play of the 2015 GCAA baseball tournament. Georgia HIghlands collected a 5-2 victory thanks to Freddie Beamon's late-game heroics. Beamon drove in the go-ahead run to give the Chargers the lead in a five-run seventh inning. Highlands then hung on to beat Georgia Perimeter College Wednesday in the GCAA conference tournament at Darton State College in Albany. Parker Acuff recorded the pitching win for the Chargers. He allowed two runs over six innings. Acuff struck out four, walked two, and gave up six hits. Devin Vainer suffered the pitching loss for Georgia Perimeter College. He lasted 6 1/3 innings, walked five, struck out 10, and allowed four runs. Georgia Highlands will next face No. 2 seed, South Georgia College, Thursday (May 7) in the next round. In other action at the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, No. 5 seed West Georgia Tech topped No. 4 seed ABAC 5-1. WGT will face top-seed and host Darton State on Thursday. ABAC will play Georgia Perimeter in an elimination game, also on Thursday.

Head coach Stuart Chester’s Cartersville Hurricanes completed a sweep of visiting Thomas County Central Wednesday night (May 6) at Richard Bell Field to advance to the GHSA Class AAAA state quarterfinals for the sixteenth time in the last seventeen years. The ‘Canes got solid performances from four different pitchers to limit Central to only three runs in the doubleheader. Cartersville won 8-2 and 2-1 to eliminate the visiting Yellow Jackets. GAME 2 — Cartersville 2, Thomas County Central 1 In the series clinching game, the Hurricanes used the strong pitching performances of Micah Smith and Lane Wilson and took advantage of a two-run error in the fifth inning to complete the doubleheader and series sweep. The 2-1 victory sends Cartersville into the Elite Eight of the GHSA Class AAAA state playoffs where they will either host Troup or travel to Wayne County. Smith recorded the pitching victory for the ‘Canes allowing only one run on five hits and three walks. Smith struck out two. Johnathan Robinson suffered the loss for the Yellow Jackets, despite not yielding an earned run. Robinson gave up five hits, walked three, and struck out five. Anthony Siegler closed out the fifth inning in relief of Smith and Wilson earned a two inning save taking the mound for the sixth and seventh innings. Siegler got the final two outs of the fifth, while Wilson allowed only one hit and a walk over the final two frames. He struck out two. Thomas County Central took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Eli Taylor led off with a double and scored on a Colby Melton groundout. That lead held until the top of the fifth when the Hurricanes tallied the deciding runs. Trent Frazier reached on an infield error and was sacrificed to second by Jacob Fowler. Wilson then singled sharply into centerfield moving Frazier to third. After a strikeout and an intentional walk to Anderson loaded the bases, Carrington Evans hit a hard ground ball that got through the Jackets’ shortstop and plated both Frazier and Wilson. With their second straight playoff series sweep, the ‘Canes improved to 20-9 on the year. Cartersville will either host Troup or travel to Wayne County for the quarterfinal round Tuesday, May 12 (doubleheader) and Wednesday, May 13 (if needed). GAME 1 — Cartersville 8, Thomas County Central 2 Trent Frazier, Devin Warner, and Anthony Siegler had three hits each to lead Cartersville offensively, while Elliott Anderson gave up only four hits on the mound as the ‘Canes took Game 1 of their Class AAAA Sweet Sixteen playoff series against visiting Thomas County Central, 8-2. Anderson tossed six complete innings, struck out seven, and yielded only four hits and three walks to earn the pitching victory. He allowed only two earned runs in his 91 pitch performance. Cartersville scored first in their opening frame when Devin Warner lined a single to right field to drive in Lane Wilson. After Thomas County Central tied the game 1-1 in the top of the second, the ‘Canes produced a three run bottom of the third. Siegler reached on an infield single, moved to second on an Anderson single, and later scored on Parker Tidwell's groundout. Tate Mathis, a courtesy runner for Anderson, and Warner — who was hit by a pitch — both scored on a 2-RBI single by Frazier to give Cartersville a 4-1 lead after three innings. The ‘Canes added a run in the fifth on a line drive single to right by Warner and a pair of infield hits by Tidwell and Frazier. The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases in the top of the sixth and cut the lead to 5-2 on an RBI hit by Stone Stephenson, but Cartersville starter Anderson got a strikeout and a groundout to escape the threat. Cartersville broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth. Carrington Evans and Frazier drove in insurance runs and the ‘Canes picked up another run on an infield error. Wilson came on to pitch the seventh and earn a save with a pair of strikeouts. Frazier had four RBI on his three hits. Warner, Evans, Tidwell, and Elliott Berrey had the other ‘Canes RBI.

The Cartersville Lady 'Canes soccer team will host Upson-Lee tonight (May 5) in the second round of the 2015 GHSA Class AAAA state playoffs. Cartersville (10-5), the Region 7-AAAA champ, shutout Madison County 7-0 in the opening round. The visiting Lady Knights also advanced with a shutout victory. Upson-Lee went on the road to knock off Cairo in the first round, 1-0. Upson-Lee is the No. 3 seed from Region 2-AAAA, but the region swept all of Region 1-AAAA in the first round. Mary Persons defeated Westover 10-2, Veterans shutout Bainbridge 7-0, and West Laurens got by No. 1 seed Thomas County Central, 5-4.

While Cartersville dispatched North Oconee in a doubleheader sweep last Friday in the first round of the 2015 Class 4A baseball playoffs, their second round opponent was battling through an extended three game series that consisted of three, one-run games. Thomas County Central (21-7, 16-4 Region 1-AAAA) lost their playoff opener to West Laurens Friday, but pushed the series to a Saturday rubber game with a 3-2 win in the doubleheader nightcap. The Yellow Jackets then captured the series Saturday with a second 3-2 victory. Cartersville (18-9, 12-2 Region 7-AAAA) will host the series Wednesday (May 6) at Richard Bell Field. If needed, Game 3 will be Thursday. Coach Mike Marra’s Georgia Highlands baseball club may have started their conference season 0-9, but the Chargers rallied down the stretch to snatch one of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association’s six playoff spots. GHC won nine of eleven conference games at the end of the regular season to garner the conference's sixth seed. The Chargers open the GCAA tournament Wednesday (May 6) against Georgia Perimeter. The double-elimination tournament is being hosted by top-seeded Darton State College in Albany. The final playoff spots and seeding were not determined until the final weekend of conference play. Darton State had secured the regular season title a week ago and takes the #1 seed followed by South Georgia State with the #2 seed. The #3 and #4 seeds are held by Georgia Perimeter and ABAC respectively. West Georgia Tech and Georgia Highlands come in as the #5 and #6 seeds.

Adairsville's Sean McDermott tossed a shutout in Game 1, but Callaway rallied in Games 2 and 3 for a pair of wins to eliminate the Tigers in the opening round of the 2015 GHSA Class AAA state baseball playoffs. Callaway won 4-0 and 10-1 to take the best-of-three series. In the Game 1 victory, McDermott allowed only three hits. The Tigers were led offensively by Reece Spencer and Verta Collum. They went 2-for-3 each. Lane Griffith and Jacob Smith also had hits. Adairsville was shutout in Game 2, but Landon Howren led the Tigers with a pair of hits. Sam Seaman, Hayden Morrow, and Spencer each added hits. The Tigers took an early lead in Game 3, but Callaway’s offense proved too much for coach Billy Roper’s Adairsville club. Callaway advanced to meet Decatur in the round of sixteen May 6 and 7. Adairsville finished their season 13-12-1.

The Cartersville Hurricanes took care of business Saturday in the opening round of the 2015 GHSA Class AAAA baseball playoffs by sweeping visiting North Oconee Titans at Richard Bell Field. The 'Canes advanced to the second round for the 17th consecutive year under head coach Stuart Chester. Cartersville won 4-1 in Game 1 behind ace pitcher Elliott Anderson. Anderson limited North Oconee to no earned runs and only four hits. He also struck out eight to earn the complete game victory. Elliott Berrey had a pair of RBI singles to lead the Cartersville offense in Game 1. Parker Tidwell and Anderson also added RBI singles. The 'Canes completed the series sweep with a 13-8 victory in Game 2. The Titans took an early 5-0 lead off ambidextrious, freshman starter Anthony Seigler, but Cartersville would begin their answer in the third. Carrington Evans had a two-run hit in the third inning and Anderson tripled in three more runs in the fourth inning to catch the Titans 5-5. Anderson would later score on a wild pitch to give the Hurricanes their first lead of Game 2, 6-5. Jacob Fowler and Trenton Frazier had key RBI doubles in the fifth and sixth innings to expand the Cartersville lead to 12-6. Cartersville improved to 18-9 on the year and will host Region 2 runner up, Thomas County Central in the next round. Those games will be Wednesday (May 6 DH) and Thursday (May 7, if needed) at Richard Bell Field. Game times TBA.
