JJ Grimaldo scored the only Adairsville goal of the game on a penalty kick in the second half. Adairsville plays at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe on Friday with an opportunity to secure a state playoff berth for the first time in the program’s history. It took nine innings Tuesday night, but the Adairsville Tigers escaped with an 8-4 Region 6-AAA win at Ridgeland. Adairsville put three hits together with three walks and a hit batsman to score four times in the top of the ninth then Tigers’ pitcher Grayson Belcher closed out the bottom of the inning to collect the pitching win. Belcher (4.2 IP, 1ER, 1H, 3BB, 8K) entered in the fifth inning and worked the rest of the way. Jack Whitley (4.1 IP, 3R, 0ER, 5H, 2BB, 5K) made the start on the mound for Adairsville. Jarrett Scott had two doubles and three RBIs for the Tigers. Landon O’Neal (two RBIs) and Chris Roper also had two hits. Tyler Driggers hit a two-run home run in the third inning that gave Adairsville a 3-2 lead at the time. Jack Nelson, Peyton Bowen, and Easton Elrod added one hit apiece. Cartersville pitcher Caden Carroll struck out seven and allowed only one first inning single as the top-ranked Purple Hurricanes won at Woodland Tuesday night 11-0 in five innings. The Canes scored three runs in the top of the first, four in the third, and added on late in the mercy rule shortened matchup. Harrison Childers (double, four RBIs), Paul Gamble (double, two RBIs), Isaac McNair-Seigler (double, RBI), and Caleb Daniel (two doubles, RBI) had two hits each for the Hurricanes. Luke Miller (double, RBI), Trip Bradley (2 RBIs), and Miles Owen added one hit apiece. Rowan Billings (2.1 IP, 5ER, 4H, 3BB, 5K) made the pitching start for Woodland and was tagged with the loss. Dalton scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning Tuesday night on their way to a come-from-behind 7-4 win at Cass. The Colonels led 4-0 through the first five innings. Carson Hill drove in a first inning run with a single. Devan Hutchinson drove home a run in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly. Hill popped a solo home run in the fifth and Chase Tatum drove in a run later in the fifth with a sac fly. Dalton’s six-run sixth included three singles and four doubles as the Catamounts took the lead for good. Cass managed a base runner in both the sixth and seventh innings, but failed to produce any more runs. Brady McCullough and Tyson Greenwade combined for six hits and four RBIs for Dalton. Josh Mitchell (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB) picked up the pitching win in relief. Connor Stockard (2 IP, 0R, 2H, 2K) earned a save for the Catamounts. Hill (5.1 IP, 4ER, 9H, 1BB, 7K) made the pitching start for Cass. Trenton Payne (0.0 IP, 2ER, 3H) suffered the pitching loss. Georgia Highlands won the first game of a four-game conference series with Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Tuesday 4-3 in Tifton. The host Stallions posted three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead but the Chargers chipped away in the middle innings. Georgia Highlands scored a run in the top of the third and Conner Faulkner hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to knot the score at 3-3. That is where the score remained until the eighth. Faulkner reached on an error and moved to second when Jayden Talik walked. A groundout moved the baserunners to second and third and Faulkner scored on a passed ball. Declan Dun (6.2 IP, 0R, 3H, 1BB, 5K) picked up the Chargers’ pitching win in relief of starter Jeremy Gay (1 IP, 3R, 1ER, 1H, 3BB, 1K). Davis Mortland (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 1K) earned a save by retiring the final four outs. Georgia Highlands (21-8, 1-0 GCAA) and ABAC (14-19, 0-1) continue their series Friday and Saturday with three more games hosted by GHC.

The Cartersville High gymnastics team captured the top three places in All-Around and placed first in the Class 5A and under division Monday night at Lovett. Cartersville finished with 97.35 points followed by the host Lions with 89.8. Annaston Wilson, a senior, placed third in All-Around with a score of 29.3. She was second in vault and third in bars with scores of 8.4 and 6.0. Fellow senior Jayla Byrd placed second in All-Around with a score of 35.8. Byrd was second in vault and bars scoring 8.4 and 7.0. She was third in beam and floor scoring 8.05 and 8.8. Junior Karley Garrison secured her bid to the GHSA Gymnastics Preliminary Meet in April with an All-Around first place score of 35.8. She was second among all competitors in all classifications at the meet. Garrison placed first in all events with individual qualifying scores of 9.2 in vault, 9.2 on beam, and 9.3 on floor exercise. The Canes gymnasts host their next meet Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Cartersville Twisters Gym. The team will be recognizing their two seniors at the meet.

A pair of Cartersville Country Club golfers, Christina Surcey and R.B. Clyburn, captured the Georgia State Golf Association Mixed Team Championship this past weekend at Sea Island Golf Club. Playing modified alternate shot Saturday and four-ball on Sunday, Surcey and Clyburn finished 11-under par firing a 68 on Saturday and carding a 63 on Sunday. The pair won by ten shots over Kit Creighton and Ty Hampel of Atlanta. Lisa and Terry Rush of Buford placed third at 3-over par for the 36-hole event. The 2023 Mixed Team Championship included 60 teams and was conducted on the Plantation and Seaside Courses.

After winning the 149-pound weight class title at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships March 5, former Woodland High wrestling standout Caleb Henson — now a freshman at Virginia Tech — earned All-American honors last week by placing fifth at the NCAA D-I National Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Smith allowed three earned runs on eight hits, no walks, and one hit batsman. The Scots (6-7, 2-0 Collegiate Conference of the South) host Oglethorpe Tuesday and travel to 9th-ranked LaGrange College for three games Friday and Saturday. STEVEN SPELL — Young Harris College (Sr., Cass HS) … while the Mountain Lions went 3-1 for the week with a home win over Lane College and won two of three at Flagler College, Spell was 6-for-15 including a double, one home run, two walks, one hit by pitch, and two RBIs. He also scored five runs in those four games. YHC (19-8, 10-5 Peach Belt Conference) visits Lincoln Memorial University Wednesday and plays a three-game PBC series at USC-Aiken Friday through Sunday. DEVIN WARNER — Georgia Gwinnett (Jr., Cartersville HS) … in three games last week — a win at Middle Georgia State, a home win over 8th-ranked University of Mobile and a home loss to 2nd-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan — Warner was 2-for-11 with five walks, two RBIs, and three runs scored. GGC (25-3, 4-0 Continental Athletic Conference), ranked No. 5 in NAIA, plays at 19th-ranked Bryan College Tuesday and hosts Toccoa Falls College and Middle Georgia State for two games each Friday and Saturday. PRESTON WELCHEL — Tennessee Wesleyan University (So., Cartersville HS) … went 3-for-4 Saturday with a walk, three RBIs, and five runs scored in the NAIA 2nd-ranked Bulldogs’ 21-14 win at No. 5 Georgia Gwinnett. He also made a defensive appearance Saturday in an 8-4 win over 8th-ranked University of Mobile in Lawrenceville. Welchel was 0-for-2 last Wednesday in TWU’s 6-4 loss to 19th-ranked Bryan College. The Bulldogs play at Cumberland University (Tennessee) Tuesday and host Johnson University (Tennessee) for three games Friday and Saturday. COHEN WILBANKS — Georgia Gwinnett College (Jr., Cartersville HS) … went 3-for-9 including a double as the Grizzlies went 2-1 last week. GGC won at Middle Georgia State and defeated 8th-ranked University of Mobile but lost a home game to 2nd-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan University. 5th-ranked Georgia Gwinnett heads to Dayton, Tennessee Tuesday to take on 19th-ranked Bryan College before hosting two games each with Toccoa Falls College and Middle Georgia State Friday and Saturday. DAVIS WILLIAMS — Birmingham-Southern College (So., Cartersville HS) … entered in the third inning and worked 4-⅓ innings of middle relief in Sunday’s 8-4 loss at Berry College. Davis gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks. He struck out two. BSC, ranked No. 1 NCAA D-III, was 3-1 for the week with a home win over Piedmont University and two wins in the series at Berry. The Panthers (20-2, 5-1 Southern Athletic Association) play 8th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater Monday in Pensacola and visit 9th-ranked LaGrange Wednesday prior to a three-game home series with Rhodes College Saturday and Sunday. JORDAN WILKIE — Augusta University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … went 3-for-13 including a double, two walks, and one run scored in four starts last week as the Jags went 1-3. Augusta beat visiting Coker College last Wednesday but lost three straight at Georgia College over the weekend. The track and field teams from Cass and Cartersville were in action Saturday at the 16-team Gordon Central High School Invitational. The Cartersville boys (80.50) finished second behind Kennesaw Mountain (84). Darlington (78), Model (74.50), and Calhoun (65) rounded out the top five. Cass (49) placed ninth. The Cass girls (54) finished fourth behind Kennesaw Mountain (111), Riverdale (103), and Dalton (79). Heritage-Catoosa (52) placed fifth followed by Cartersville (49.50). WOODLAND COMPETES AT ROSWELL RELAYS Woodland High School’s track and field teams competed Saturday at the 27-team Roswell High School Relays. Woodward Academy won the girls' meet with 73 points followed by Roswell (59.5) and Etowah (58). Woodland had 8 points and finished 18th. Cambridge won the boys' meet with 59.5 points followed by Milton (54) and Tucker (53). The Woodland boys finished with 32 points and tied for 10th. The Adairsville Tigers outhit visiting Heritage-Conyers Saturday in a non-region matchup, but the Patriots scored seven runs across the final two innings to leave with a 13-10 win. The high-scoring contest saw five lead changes overall and Adairsville take a 5-4 lead after just one inning. Heritage went back ahead in the top of the second 6-5 but the Tigers pushed across single runs in the second and third innings to lead 7-6. Both teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings before the Patriots went up 9-7 in the sixth. The Tigers cut the lead to 9-8 in the bottom of the sixth but four runs by Heritage in the top of the seventh gave the visitors a commanding 13-8 advantage. Adairsville scored two more times in the bottom of the seventh but got no closer. Jack Nelson (1 IP, 3ER, 3H, 2BB) worked the decisive sixth inning on the mound and was tagged with the pitching loss for the Tigers. Jack Whitley (1 IP, 4R, 0ER, 0H, 1BB, 2K), Grayson Belcher (1 IP, 2ER, 2H, 2BB, 1K), Kaiden Coker (3 IP, 0R, 2H, 2BB, 3K), and Jarrett Scott (1 IP, 4R, 1ER, 2H, 1BB) also pitched for Adairsville. Chris Roper finished with four hits including a double and one RBI for the Tigers’ offense. Evan Sanders had three hits including a double and one RBI. Tyler Driggers contributed two hits including a home run and three RBIs. Peyton Bowen also had two hits with one RBI. Easton Elrod (two RBIs) and Scott added one hit each. Landon O’Neal drove in a run along with Braxton Ryan who tossed in a sacrifice fly. Heritage-Conyers, a member of Region 8-5A, improved to 4-10 on the year. Adairsville (6-6) begins Region 6-AAA action Tuesday at Ridgeland.
