Malachi Jeffries had two rushing touchdowns in the first half with Luke McBride and Kelvin Mitchell adding touchdown runs in the first half for Cartersville as the Class 5A top-ranked Canes blanked the Columbia Eagles Friday night, 42-0, at Weinman Stadium. The shutout was part of the 2022 Senior Night celebration for the Purple Hurricanes. Canes’ freshman quarterback Nate Russell tossed a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jamauri Brice late in the second quarter setting up a running clock in the second half. Jachai Delgado added a rushing touchdown for Cartersville in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, the Canes defense recorded four turnovers in the contest. Turner Ross Abernathy and Chad Lynn picked off Eagles’ passes. Connor Brasfield and Talan Nix both recovered fumbles. Columbia (3-1) lost for the first time this season. The Hurricanes (4-0) host Heritage-Conyers next Friday in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Adairsville Tigers controlled the line of scrimmage for much of Friday night’s skirmish with visiting Cass and the result was a 29-12 win over the Colonels. Cass took the opening kickoff and drove for a 6-0 lead when Mac Nelson scored on a 22-yard touchdown run with 9:17 to go in the opening period. The Colonels missed the PAT kick. On the ensuing possession, Adairsville took the lead with a 65-yard drive that was capped by Ethan Blome’s 55-yard scoring run. Cooper Souders converted the Tigers’ PAT kick to put Adairsville up 7-6 with 7:36 remaining in the first quarter. After both teams scored on their initial possessions, the first half turned into a stalemate. Adairsville missed a 28-yard field goal attempt late in the second quarter sending the teams to the locker room with no further scoring. Cass regained the lead with 4:24 left in the third quarter. Mac Nelson had a 50-yard run in the drive and Jacob McWhorter completed a 13-yard pass to Devin Henderson to help the Colonels reach the three yard line. Nelson punched in a run on the next play to give Cass a 12-7 lead. The Colonels’ two-point conversion pass attempt failed. The Tigers followed with a 61-yard drive to take the lead for good. Several chunk runs by Blome moved the Tigers steadily down the field. Chris Roper added a 15 yard run of his own and finished off the drive with a 4-yard plunge. A two point conversion pass from Roper to Jamarian Pullum gave Adairsville a 15-12 lead with 0:20 left in the third period. Cass drove deep into Adairsville territory early in the fourth quarter but missed a 29-yard field goal attempt. Two minutes later, Blome struck again with a 63-yard touchdown run. Souders’ kick had Adairsville on top, 22-12. The Tigers closed out the game by immediately stopping the next Cass possession. McWhorter’s pass was picked off by Tre Winters and returned to the Colonels’ 19-yard line. A few plays later, Blome scored on a 1-yard run with 3:54 remaining and the Tigers had a 29-12 victory. Adairsville (2-1) travels to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe next Friday night to open play in Region 6-AAA. Cass (1-3) has a bye week before traveling to M.L. King in Atlanta on September 23.

Woodland football dropped a 28-0 decision Friday night in Lindale, falling to the Pepperell Dragons in non-region action. Pepperell’s DJ Rogers had a pair of touchdown runs. Gage Owens contributed a touchdown run and DeMarcus Ragland added a second quarter pick-six for the Dragons’ scores. Owens scored first with a 19-yard run in the first quarter. Ragland returned his interception 46-yards for a touchdown in the second period. Rogers gave Pepperell a 21-0 lead at halftime with a 19-yard jaunt and added a 68-yard touchdown sprint in the fourth quarter for the game’s final points. Pepperell improved to 2-1. Woodland (1-3) has a bye week before traveling into Cobb County September 23 to take on the Osborne Cardinals in a 7:30 p.m. non-region kickoff.

Woodland and Cartersville picked up key region softball wins Thursday evening while Adairsville dropped a region matchup at home with Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. Woodland pitchers Haley Collum and Peyton Dorn combined for a one-hit shutout of Hiram while Cartersville pitchers Ava Perkins and Kennedy Stevens tossed a combined two-hitter to beat Dalton. Perkins (5.2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 7BB, 3K) picked up the pitching victory. Stevens (1.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K) earned a save by retiring the final four outs. In addition to Arnold’s first inning home run, she also contributed a double. Mikey Lewis had two hits. Elizabeth Nelson, Jordan Bishop, and McKinley Chada added one hit apiece for the Hurricanes. The loss dropped Dalton to 1-9 overall and 0-6 in region play. Cartersville (7-5-1, 6-1) hosts Villa Rica Monday at 5 p.m. in a non-region game and returns to region play Tuesday at Woodland at 5:55 p.m. LAKEVIEW-FORT OGLETHORPE 3, ADAIRSVILLE 0 Both teams were strong in the pitching circle Thursday night but it was the visiting LFO Warriors who managed the game’s only runs as they defeated Adairsville, 3-0. Adairsville hurler Megan Gregory (2.1 IP, 0H, 2ER, 3BB, 2K) was tagged with the pitching loss in a start. Jordan Clay (4.2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 4H, 0BB, 1K) also pitched for the Tigers. Lakely Parish (7 IP, 0R, 4H, 0BB, 9K) tossed a complete game shutout for the Warriors. McKenzie Pullum, Jenna Young, Clay, and Alissa Winters had one hit each for Adairsville. Woodland volleyball swept visiting Gordon Central Thursday night in straight sets, 3-0, as the Lady Cats honored their seniors. Woodland won 25-7, 25-12, and 25-13. Kendall Condon had 20 assists, six digs, and six aces. Kailynn Mullinax had nine kills and three aces. Madison West had five kills and two aces. Anastyn Jones had five kills, four digs, and a pair of aces. Bailee Motes had four digs and four aces. ADAIRSVILLE SPLITS REGION MATCHES Adairsville volleyball split a pair of matches Thursday night in Rossville. The Lady Tigers lost to host Ridgeland 25-21 and 25-12 but defeated Ringgold 26-24 and 25-23. In the two matches, Adairsville’s Richlyn Blair had eight kills, 11 digs, one assist, and one block. Jayna Wilson and Jordyn Hartline totaled four kills and one block each. Wilson added an assist and three digs. Addie Pearson contributed 12 assists, 11 digs, two kills, one block and one ace. Annie McCormick finished with 10 assists, four digs, one ace, and one kill. Jenna Claire Hendley had six kills, five blocks, five aces, and three digs. Sherry Wells added ten digs and one kill. CASS FALLS IN FIVE SETS TO ROCKMART Cass volleyball dropped a non-region, five-set match at Rockmart Thursday night. The Lady Colonels won the second and third sets 25-11 and 25-23. Rockmart won the opening set 25-23, took the fourth set 25-15, and won the fifth tie-breaker set 15-9. Tamira Feanny had five kills and seven service aces to Cass in the loss. Harlee Davis finished with nine assists and nine aces. Jenesys Moctezuma totaled 52 digs. Cass (8-11-1) hosts Hiram and Dalton for Region 7-5A matches Tuesday starting at 5:30 p.m.

Adairsville softball got home runs Wednesday from Taylor Evans and Brie Patterson to go with some solid relief pitching by Megan Gregory to hold off the Ridgeland Panthers, 5-4, in a Region 6-AAA battle in Tiger Valley. Ridgeland built a 3-0 lead midway through the third inning before the Tigers offense got rolling. Annalee Morris produced a two-run single in the bottom of the third to narrow the Tigers’ deficit to 3-2. Adairsville tied the game in the fourth inning following Gregory’s RBI double. The Tigers then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with solo home runs by Patterson and Evans. The Panthers scored a run in the top of the sixth, but got no closer. Jordan Clay (3.2 IP, 3ER, 8H) split the pitching duties with Gregory (3.1 IP, 1ER, 5H, 5K) who picked up the win. Desiree Powell had four hits for Ridgeland including a pair of doubles. The loss dropped Ridgeland to 5-11 overall and 1-3 in region play. Adairsville (6-6-1, 2-3) hosts Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Woodland softball cruised to a 12-0 non-region win at home Wednesday night over Wheeler in just four innings. Ashlyn Baines (3.1 IP, 0R, 2H, 3BB) and Peyton Dorn (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H) combined in the pitching circle for the shutout. The Lady Cats led 2-0 after two innings before scoring five runs in the third and five more in the fourth to close out the game by run rule. Eight different Woodland hitters had one hit apiece in the win. Dorn (2 RBIs), Baines (RBI), Jordan Hammonds (RBI), Brooke Edmondson (RBI), Ashlyn Dowdy (RBI), Alana Carnes (RBI), Karmen Zeferino (RBI), and Elizabeth Hartsfield had one hit each. Bailey Gerstner and Lanie Calhoun added one RBI each. The loss dropped Wheeler to 3-10 on the season. Woodland (7-7, 3-3 Region 7-5A) hosts Hiram Thursday in a region contest.

In an error plagued game Wednesday night at the Cass Athletic Complex, Calhoun took advantage of nine unearned runs on the Yellow Jackets way to a 12-6 win over the Cass Lady Colonels. The two teams combined for 13 miscues in the contest with all six of the Cass runs unearned. The visiting Yellow Jackets led 7-0 when Cass finally broke the ice to get on the scoreboard. The Colonels narrowed the margin to 7-5 in the bottom of the fifth inning, but that would be as close as they would get. Calhoun added five more runs in the sixth inning for a 12-5 lead and Cass managed one more run in the bottom of the seventh. Avery Greeson and Athens Hudson combined in the pitching circle for Calhoun to limit Cass to only five hits. Greeson earned the win with four innings of work. Hudson was credited with a save. Sydney Bullard, Aryian Berner, and Maggy Abernathy led the Jackets offense combining for six hits (two each) and four RBIs. Emma Gibson (5.1 IP, 10R, 3ER, 6H, 5BB, 4K) suffered the pitching loss for Cass. Alexis Woods (1.2 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB) closed out the final five outs in the circle for the Colonels. Darianna Sosa had two hits and two RBIs to pace the Cass offense. Alexis Woods also finished with two hit including a double. Ansley Hight added one hit and one RBI. Calhoun improved to 11-3 overall and 6-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (6-9, 3-3) travels to Hiram next Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. and will host Cartersville next Thursday at 5:55 p.m.

Cartersville volleyball split matches Tuesday night at Harrison High School, falling to the host Hoyas before defeating the Marist War Eagles. Harrison topped the Lady Canes 25-22 and 25-16 in the Cartersville opener. Lauren Lawson had nine kills and Ailee England followed with five. Lawson added two blocks and five digs. England finished with six digs and an assist. Lily Gochee contributed 17 assists. In Cartersville’s 25-20, 25-20 win over Marist Lawson finished with seven kills, two aces, and three digs. England had six kills, two aces, one block, and seven digs. Tennessee Abernathy totaled five kills, three blocks, and two digs. Lily Gochee (5) and Mia Nicklas (7) combined for a dozen digs. Gochee added 18 assists. Harrison improved to 9-9 on the season. Marist dropped to 6-13. Cartersville (11-11) travels to Northwest Whitfield Thursday for a 5:30 start. Adairsville volleyball defeated Cass in straight sets Tuesday night 25-13 and 25-17. The Tigers celebrated their seniors Richlyn Blair and Annie McCormick in the victory. Region 7-AAAAA co-leaders Cartersville and Calhoun both collected league wins Tuesday night while the Cass game at Dalton played into the fifth inning before being called off due to weather. CARTERSVILLE 10, HIRAM 1 Cartersville scored eight runs early and totaled ten hits Tuesday night in a 10-1 Region 7-5A win at Hiram. The win by Cartersville keeps the Hurricanes in a first place tie with Calhoun in the league standings. Meanwhile, Lady Canes hurler Ava Perkins yielded a run but tossed a five inning, no-hitter to pick up the pitching victory. The Hurricanes scored six runs in the top of the first inning on four hits and three walks. They added two more runs in the top of the second on three additional hits. Cartersville added two more runs in the fifth inning on solo home runs by Jordan Bishop and Ansleigh Tilley. Bishop finished with three hits and three RBIs. Kiley Arnold followed with two hits including a double and one RBI. Layne Callan (RBI), Perkins (RBI), Elizabeth Nelson, and Mikey Lewis had the other Cartersville base hits. Calhoun built a 5-1 lead by the fifth inning before Woodland challenged in the final frame. The Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the third inning on three hits and a walk. They added two more on a two-run homer by Aryian Berner in the fourth inning and posted another insurance run in the fifth on four singles. Trailing 2-0 Woodland narrowed the margin to 2-1 when Peyton Dorn reached on a dropped third strike, moved to third on a pair of groundouts, and scored on a passed ball. Ashlyn Baines drove in a run for the Lady Cats in the top of the seventh with a groundout and Woodland added a final run on a Calhoun infield error for a 5-3 final. Haley Collum (6 IP, 5ER, 10H, 1BB, 2K) took the pitching loss for the Wildcats. The game was ultimately ruled a rainout and since the teams had not completed five innings, it must be replayed in its entirety. As the MiLB seasons for Cartersville products Sam Howard and Anthony Seigler begin to wind down in September, collegiate athletes with Bartow County ties hit the gridiron, court, pitch, and trail to launch their Fall 2022 seasons. This week’s update includes notes on local athletes in college football, cross country, volleyball, and soccer contributing with their programs across the country. Former Cartersville Hurricane JaCorey Johns, now at Wake Forest, had three tackles this week and a pair of quarterback hurries as the Demon Deacons won their season opener. Meanwhile, Western Kentucky freshman runner Rylee Evans — a Woodland grad — was the top finisher for the Hilltoppers and led her team to a sixth place finish of 21 teams at the Foothills Invitational. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (9th yr. pro; Triple-A Detroit Tigers organization; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS) … made three appearances last week for the Mud Hens at Rochester. Wednesday, the southpaw earned his seventh hold of the season by retiring the final two outs of the eighth inning in a 5-4 win. Thursday night he was touched for three earned runs on two hits and a walk in the sixth inning when pitching teammate Angel De Jesus replaced Howard and surrendered a three run home run. Two of those runs (base runners) were inherited. The 29-year-old faired better on Sunday collecting his second win of the season in relief. Howard entered with two outs in the sixth inning and sat down four straight batters — three by strikeout — as the Mud Hens held on for a 6-3 win. He is now 2-2 with a 3.94 ERA in 33 MiLB appearances this season across 29.2 innings. He has a 35:20 strikeout to walk ratio with a 1.25 WHIP. The Mud Hens (70-57) are in third place in the International League’s West Division and 8.5 games behind division-leading Nashville with just 21 games remaining in the regular season. Toledo has a six game home series Tuesday through Sunday against St. Paul. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Hudson Valley Renegades (5th yr. pro; High Class-A New York Yankees organization; Cartersville HS) … saw action in four home games last week against Jersey Shore going only 1-for-12 at the plate. The lone hit was a double that produced two RBIs. He added two more RBIs Saturday without benefit of a hit. He drove in one run with a sacrifice fly and the other with a bases loaded walk. The switch hitting catcher has appeared in 92 games this season and has a .229 batting average in just under 300 official at bats. The 23-year-old first round draft selection has seven home runs, 43 RBIs, and has stolen 16 bases. The Renegades (69-56 overall) are 35-24 in the second half standings and 0.5 games behind the Brooklyn Cyclones with just six games to play. Hudson Valley, who needs to win the second half to make the playoffs, travels to Wilmington for a Tuesday through Sunday series this week wrapping up the regular season slate.
