The Patroons won last Wednesday to force a Game 3 but his former team — the Shreveport Mavericks — won the decisive game 137-132 despite a 30 point performance by Mosby. MOSBY — Albany Patroons (5th yr. pro; The Basketball League; Alcorn State; Cartersville HS) … after dropping the first game at Shreveport 123-115 Saturday, July 2, Mosby and the Patroons needed a two-game sweep in Albany to win the 2022 championship series of The Basketball League. In a win Wednesday night, the high scoring guard posted a 20-point performance with eight rebounds, six assists, three steals, and one blocked shot during a 112-102 win. In the decisive Game 3 last Thursday, however, his 30 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists were not enough to lift Albany in a 137-132 loss to the Shreveport Mavericks. In 31 games this season with the Patroons, Mosby averaged 20.4 point, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game as Albany finished 26-7 overall including playoff series wins over Atlantic City, Huntsville, and Kokomo to reach the league finals. SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (9th yr. pro; Triple-A Detroit Tigers organization; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS) …cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Toledo on Saturday. The southpaw has been pitching in Toledo since mid-May when he was picked up from the Pittsburgh Pirates. With the Mud Hens, he has posted a 3.75 ERA, 19:9 K:BB ratio, and a 1.42 WHIP in 12 innings over 14 appearances. He was designated for assignment July 5 and lost his spot on the Tigers’ 40-man roster. The 29-year-old will remain with the Triple-A club. Toledo (42-41 overall) is currently fifth in the International League’s West Division. The Mud Hens trail Nashville by 10 games and have a six game series this week at the St. Paul Saints. CONNOR JUSTUS — Charleston (WV) Dirty Birds (7th yr. pro; Independent Atlantic League; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS) … is showing on MiLB.com for the first time this week on the voluntarily retired list. He did not see action last week as the Dirty Birds went 2-4 against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and Staten Island Ferry Hawks. Bartow County Little League 12U and 10U softball teams split games over the weekend at their respective double-elimination state tournaments. Both tournaments are being hosted by Warner Robins American Little League. Bartow County 12U lost its opening game Saturday to Dudley Little League 19-4 before bouncing back Sunday with a 16-6 win over West Point Little League. Bartow 12U plays an elimination game Monday night at 8 p.m. against Harris County Little League. Bartow County 10U defeated Dudley Little League 5-3 in the opening round, but dropped a 6-5 decision in seven innings Sunday to Hart County Little League. Bartow 10U plays an elimination game Monday night at 6 p.m. against Oconee County Little League. 12U BARTOW 16, WEST POINT 6 Bartow County 12U softball trailed 3-2 after the first inning Sunday but scored seven runs in the second inning and six more in the third to take control of the game in a 16-6 win over West Point. Rilyn Caspari was the starting pitcher and winner in the circle for Bartow. Brooke Holmes led the Bartow offense by reaching base all four times with a home run, a single, a walk, and reached on an error. She struck out 14 in the first six frames but was forced to leave the pitching circle for the seventh inning by Little League rules. The two teams matched one another with five hits each. Ansley Tummins led Bartow 10U with a pair of hits. Jayda White contributed a double. Khloe Shinall and Madison Brookshire added one hit apiece. Maggie Ashmore of Kingston finished in a tie for 21st place Sunday at the Epson Tour’s 54-hole Twin Bridges Championship in Albany, New York. The tournament was played at the 6,080-yard, par-71 Pinehaven Country Club. Ashmore entered Sunday’s final round in a tie for fourth place after rounds of 71 and 68 to start the event. She slipped to a 76 on Sunday and closed the event a 2-over-par garnering a $2,279 paycheck — her first of the season. Playing in four events in 2022 on the Epson Tour, Ashmore moved into 143rd on the tour’s money list. She previously missed cuts at the Island Resort Championship and Carolina Golf Classic in June. She also missed the cut in April at the Garden City Charity Classic. The 26-year-old and former Augusta University golfer works on her game regularly at Cartersville Country Club. Epson Tour leader Lucy Li won the Twin Bridges Championship and the $30,000 prize with rounds of 66-68-69 (10-under-par). Swedish pro Linnea Strom, currently second on the tour’s money list, finished four shots back (6-under) and veteran Allie White placed third at 4-under-par. The next event on the Epson Tour is the FireKeepers Casino Hotel Championship July 29-31 at Battle Creek Country Club in Battle Creek, Michigan. The Cartersville Little League 11U baseball team survived an elimination game Sunday afternoon with a 9-4 win over host Athens Little League at Holland Park in Athens. Cartersville, who lost to Smyrna 7-2 on Saturday in the first round of the double-elimination state tournament, advances to its next elimination game Monday night at 7 p.m. against the Warner Robins American/Franklin County loser. With the score knotted at 4-4 in Sunday’s eventual win, Cartersville 11U took the lead for good with a single run in the top of the third inning. The locals then added two more runs in the top of the fourth and two more insurance runs in the top of the sixth for a 9-4 victory. Parker Huth, who also picked up the pitching win, had three hits and one RBI to help lead the Cartersville offense. Braxton Lemon also had three hits including a double with one RBI. Will Groce produced two hits including two doubles and three RBIs. Demetrius Wynn also produced a pair of hits including one double and two RBIs. Rounding out the Cartersville attack, Max Stepp contributed a double and one RBI. Tyler Hickman had a double while Noah Leffew (RBI) and Blake Forstie added one hit apiece. Huth finished the first four innings on the mound yielding four earned runs on seven hits and four walks. Huth fanned four. Leffew and Braxton Harkness worked one scoreless inning each in relief. The double-elimination 8-to-10 year old state tournament is being hosted by West Point Little League. Smyrna 10U, who rattled off 13 hits in the contest, scored single runs in the first and third innings and led 2-0 heading into the fifth inning. Smyrna then posted three runs in the fifth and added two more in the top of the sixth securing their opening round win. Brock Morris had two hits for Cartersville. Jack McCurry added a double while Anthony Hunt, Alec Higgins, Bennett Bryant, Easton Stephens, and Micah Henderson finished with one hit apiece. Henderson started on the mound and worked into the fifth inning. He allowed four earned runs (five total) on nine hits and one walk. The Cartersville starter struck out five. Clyburn of Cartersville shot rounds of 73-70-75-72 for a 2-over-par 290 total and a tie for 20th Thursday through Sunday at the 101st Georgia State Golf Association State Amateur Championship played at the 7,094-yard, par-72 The Landings Club - Deer Creek in Savannah. William Love of Atlanta held on during the final round to win the championship by two shots over Duluth’s Billy Abdow. Love shot 69-67-68-76 to finish at 8-under par 280. Abdow carded rounds of 73-69-66-74. Logan Perkins of Locust Grove was third at 283 followed by Bruce Murphy (Johns Creek) and John Daniel Culbreth (Thomasville) at 4-under-par 284 to round out the top five. Clyburn’s four day performance included a pair of weekend eagles on par-4 holes. He also carded 13 birdies during the championship including birdies on the final two holes to climb into the top twenty. Lee Bowman, a Marietta resident and Cartersville Country Club member, also qualified for the 144-player field but missed the 36-hole cut after shooting 73-78—151 and a tie for 69th. The field was cut to the low 60 players and ties following the first two rounds.

The Cartersville Little League 11U baseball team dropped its 2022 Georgia Little League state tournament opener Saturday in Athens, 7-2, to Smyrna Little League. Cartersville fell behind early and trailed 6-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. The locals scored twice in the fourth inning on five consecutive singles by Will Groce, Tyler Hickman, Demetrius Wynn, Braxton Lemon, and Blake Forstie. Groce had two hits total in the contest and Hickman also added a second safety with a double. Hickman started on the mound and was tagged with the pitching loss. He was touched for six runs (only three earned) on seven hits and three walks. Hickman fanned three. Wynn worked the final 2-2/3 innings on the bump without giving up a run. He yielded four hits and a pair of walks. Cartersville falls to the loser’s bracket portion of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament. Bartow County Little League 12U defeated Cartersville Little League twice Tuesday night at Hamilton Crossing Park to win the Georgia Little League District 1 championship. Bartow County won the first game Tuesday night 10-0 and captured the district title with a 9-4 win in the nightcap. Cartersville entered the double-elimination championship round undefeated with weekend wins over Rockmart (10-1) and Bartow County (4-3 in eight innings). Entering Tuesday night, Bartow had a pair of wins over Dalton (6-4 and 16-1) along with Sunday’s loss to Cartersville. Bartow County defeated Dalton 6-4 and Cartersville beat Rockmart 10-1. Bartow County led 4-0 through two innings before Dalton tied the score by the middle of the fifth inning. Two runs by Bartow County in the bottom of the fifth inning determined the final outcome. Grayson Isham and Huck Garlin had two hits each for Bartow. Matt Zander contributed a triple. Blaine Groce, Aiden Pyke, and Cade McCorkle added one hit apiece. In Cartersville’s win over Rockmart, the locals led 3-1 through three innings and broke the game open with three more runs in the fourth and four in the fifth inning. The Cartersville Little League 9-11 year old tournament team won the Georgia Little League District 1 championship Sunday by taking the rubber game of a three-game series with Bartow County Little League. Cartersville won the series opener Saturday at Hamilton Crossing Park, 3-2. Bartow County won the second game of the series 6-3 Sunday afternoon but Cartersville bounced back to win the deciding third game, 14-7, to claim the District 1 banner. In Saturday’s Game 1 win, Cartersville scored all three runs in the top of the third inning on four of the team’s nine hits in the game. Demetrius Wynn, Max Stepp, Will Groce and Trey Smith had two hits each for Cartersville. Everett Owens added one hit. Cooper Rampley had the only hit for Bartow County. Bartow County won Game 2 of the series Sunday afternoon, 6-3. Maddox Koontz and Cooper Rampley paced the Bartow offense with a pair of hits each. Bryce Patterson, Tate Broome, Jax Huskins, and Cole Williams added one hit each. Everett Owen and Hudson Lovette had one hit each for Cartersville. The Bartow win in Game 2 forced a deciding Game 3 Sunday won by Cartersville, 14-7. Cartersville scored four runs in the top of the first and added one run in each of the next four frames to maintain the lead. Bartow scored a run in the bottom of the third to make the score 6-1. Bartow then added two runs in the fourth and batted around in the fifth to post four runs that cut the Cartersville lead to 8-7. Cartersville then put the game away in the top of the sixth by sending twelve men to the plate to score six times. Everett Owen and Braxton Lemon led the Cartersville attack with three hits each. Demetrius Wynn, Blake Forstie, and Noah Leffew followed with two hits each. Parker Huth, Will Groce, and Braxton Harkness added one hit apiece. Jax Huskins and Tate Broome had two hits each for Bartow in the Game 3 loss. Bryce Patterson and Maddox Koontz added one hit apiece. The Cartersville Little League 9-11 year old team advances to the Georgia Little League State Tournament that begins July 9 at Athens Little League.
