Ringgold scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning Thursday night at Adairsville to complete a two-game, Region 6-AAA sweep in the battle of Tigers. The visitors had leads of 1-0 in the top of the first and 4-1 through the first five innings, but Adairsville knotted the score at 4-4 with a three-run sixth inning. From there, both teams went scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings before Ringgold posted their big ninth inning. Braden Powell (5 IP, 4ER, 6H, 3BB, 3K) suffered the pitching loss for Adairsville in relief of starter Jack Whitley (3.1 IP, 4ER, 7H, 1BB, 2K). Dawson Craig (0.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 1K) retired the final two outs of the ninth inning. Adairsville was out hit in the contest fifteen to four. Evan Sanders (RBI), Tyler Driggers (2 RBIs), Landon O’Neal, and Craig had the Adairsville base hits. Ringgold improved to 14-12 on the season and 9-3 in region play. Ringgold currently sits in a second place tie with Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe behind Rockmart in the Region 6-AAA standings. Adairsville (9-12, 4-8) will try to bounce back Friday at home against LaFayette.

The Class 5A state tournament first round matches for Cartersville's tennis teams have been scheduled. The 3rd-seeded Cartersville girls will play at Region 5-5A 2nd-seeded Chamblee at 4 p.m. The Region 7-5A 2nd-seeded Cartersville boys will host St. Pius X, the No. 3 seed from Region 5-5A, Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Dellinger Park.

Results from Wednesday's Three-Way Tune-Up track and field meet at Cartersville High School. The Cartersville girls and boys teams won with the Cass girls and Hiram boys finishing as runner-up.

The Cartersville boys tennis team finished as runner-up in the Region 7-5A Championship Tournament Tuesday and Wednesday at Dellinger Park. The Canes began the tournament as the No. 3-seed and made their way to the region championship match with wins over Cass (5-0) and No. 2-seed Calhoun 3-1 on Tuesday. Cartersville lost Wednesday to Blessed Trinity and will host a Class 5A State Tournament first round match as Region 7-5A’s No. 2-seed. The Canes opponent will be determined later this week. In other boys region tournament action, Hiram edged Woodland 3-2 Tuesday before falling 4-0 to Blessed Trinity. The first round of the Class 5A state playoffs must be completed by Thursday, April 21. Cartersville will host the No. 3-seed from Region 5-5A. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS DEFEAT CASS FOR 3-SEED; ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS HAVE ALSO QUALIFIED FOR THE STATE PLAYOFFS The Cartersville girls tennis team will enter the GHSA Class 5A State Tournament as the No. 3-seed from Region 7-5A. The Lady Canes defeated Cass in the region’s third place match Wednesday 3-0. As a result, the Lady Colonels will also enter the state playoffs with a road match as the No. 4-seed. Cartersville lost to Blessed Trinity in the semifinals 3-1 while Cass lost to eventual Region 7-5A champion Calhoun 3-0. In Tuesday’s first round, Cass defeated Hiram 4-1 and Blessed Trinity blanked the Woodland girls, 5-0. The opening round of the GHSA Class 5A state tournament must be completed by Thursday, April 21. Cass will play at the Region 5-5A champion and Cartersville will travel to Region 5-5A’s runner-up. The opponents for both will be determined by the Region 5-5A playoffs later this week. In Class AAA, the Adairsville girls clinched at state playoff berth the week before local spring break. Adairsville — as a No. 4-seed — will begin the playoffs with a road match at the Region 8-AAA champion. That opponent will be determined this week.

Cartersville High School product, Anthony Seigler, started his new assignment with the New York Yankees Class A affiliate Tampa Tarpons with a great start this past weekend. The 2018 first round draft pick went 3-for-6 with four walks, a double, a home run, and three RBIs in a pair of starts against Lakeland. Elsewhere, 30 other local collegiate and professional athletes saw action and made contributions with their respective teams in action last week through Monday, April 11. SOFTBALL COLBI BALLARD — Shorter University (So., Cartersville HS) … failed to reach base in a pinch hitting appearance Saturday during a loss at Christian Brothers University. The Hawks dropped all three games and slipped to 5-35 on the season. HANNAH TODD — University of Houston (Grad Student, Cartersville HS) … earned a pitching win Saturday at East Carolina with a complete-game performance. The Cougars’ hurler, now 8-5 on the season, issued no walks and surrendered three earned runs while scattering a dozen hits. She recorded one strikeout facing 29 batters. Houston (22-16-1, 6-1-1 American Athletic Conference) played at McNeese University Tuesday before hosting Wichita State in a three game conference series Thursday through Saturday. The 22 year old catcher went 1-for-4 with a walk in last Friday’s season-opening 9-6 win at the Lakeland Flying Tigers. In a start Sunday, the switch hitter was 2-for-2 with a double, a third inning home run, three walks, and three RBIs in a Tampa 9-5 win at Lakeland. BASEBALL MASON BARNETT — Auburn University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … started on the mound last Tuesday in Birmingham and went four innings with no decision. He yielded just one earned run on four hits and three walks and left the game with the Tigers leading UAB 3-1. Auburn went on to win 6-4 and won two of three against 12th-ranked Vanderbilt over the weekend. The Tigers (22-10, 7-5 SEC) hosted Samford Tuesday night and plays at Mississippi State in a three game series Thursday through Saturday. JAKE GOOCH — Central Alabama CC (So., Cartersville HS) … walked twice, drove in a run, and scored a run but was officially 0-for-7 at the plate in three games last week against Calhoun Community College. The Trojans split the four game home-and-home series. CACC (15-21, 5-11 ACCC) hosted Wallace-Dothan Tuesday, hosts Marion Military in a doubleheader Thursday, and then travels to Marion for a Saturday doubleheader. KENNY JINKS — Shorter University (Jr., Woodland HS) … made a pair of road starts on the mound and picked up a pitching win last week. In a four inning start at Carson-Newman he allowed just one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out five and was credited with the victory as the Hawks won 4-2. He started again Sunday at Christian Brothers and went 2-and-2/3 innings. Jinks fanned two but surrendered four earned runs on four hits and three walks. He left the game with the Hawks leading 5-4 and they went on to win 12-8. Shorter (21-15, 12-11 Gulf South Conference) hosted Morehouse College Tuesday in their only game this week. LOGAN MARTIN — Sewanee-Univ. of the South (Jr., Cartersville HS) … went 7-and-2/3 innings in a home start Saturday against Oglethorpe University but was saddled with the pitching loss as the Tigers fell to the Stormy Petrels 6-3. Martin was charged with three earned runs (five total) on five hits and five walks. He struck out nine. Hagans and Raptors 905 downed Capital City Go-Go in the Eastern Conference semifinals before falling to Delaware in the conference finals during the NBA G League playoffs. In the 131-126, overtime semifinal win April 7, Hagans contributed eight assists to go with four points and three rebounds. Raptors 905 came up short in a high-scoring conference finals, dropping a 143-139 decision April 10. Versus Delaware, Hagans posted seven points, six assists and two rebounds. He added a steal in each postseason game. A.J. MOSBY -- Albany Patroons (The Basketball League; Cartersville HS)A.J. Mosby (Albany Patroons, The Basketball League; Cartersville) — Mosby flirted with double-doubles in both of Albany's victories last week. The Alcorn State product racked up 27 points, eight rebounds and five assists in a 123-100 triumph April 8 over Reading. Two days later, Mosby posted 21 points, nine assists and three boards during a 113-105 win against Syracuse. He totaled three steals, while shooting 65.5% from the field, across the two games. GOLF DALTON HENSON -- Reinhardt University (So., Cartersville HS) ... paced the Eagles and finished tied for third overall in the Mountain Empire Intercollegiate hosted by Milligan (Tennessee) April 11-12 at Elizabethton Golf Course. After an opening round four-under 68, Henson shot an even par to close out the event and help Reinhardt come in third out of 10 teams. CHANC WILLIS -- Reinhardt University (So., Cartersville HS) ... posted consecutive three-over 75s in the two-day tournament. His score placed him fifth on the team and 20th overall. TENNIS CONNOR GUNNELL -- Shortern University (So., Woodland HS ) ... dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision on Line 6 singles and fell by a 6-1 final with his doubles partner in a team shutout loss April 9 at ninth-ranked West Florida. EMILY SURCEY -- Arkansas State University (Fr., Cass HS) ... proved to be the hero in sending Arkansas State to a 4-3 victory over Georgia Southern April 10 at home. The former Cass standout rallied for a thrilling 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win on Line 2 singles. Trailing 4-2 in the decisive set, with all other matches having been decided, Surcey triumphed in four straight games to complete the comeback. Surcey and Hunter Roper led 5-4 in their Line 3 doubles match, when the Red Wolves secured the vial team point. The day prior, Surcey and Roper produced a 6-4 win, but Arkansas State dropped the other two doubles matches to visiting Georgia State. Surcey fell 6-3, 6-2 in singles action versus the Panthers, who emerged with a 4-0 win. CHRISTY TURNER -- Coppin State University (Sr., Woodland HS) ... paired with Mackenzie Jones for a 6-1 win on Line 3 doubles to help Coppin State secure the team doubles point April 11 at St. Joseph's. However, she dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision on Line 4 singles, as the hosts landed a 5-2 win. Georgia Highlands College softball dropped a conference doubleheader at home Tuesday to Georgia Military College falling 10-1 and 8-7. Hailey Cronic finished the doubleheader with four hits including a double and a second game home run. Annsley Todd followed with three hits and one RBI. Madison Dennis had two hits and two RBIs including a solo home run in the opening game of the doubleheader. Allison Deweese had two hits including a home run and two RBIs. Haley Overton also contributed a pair of hits for the Chargers. Audrey Johnson (double), Kyndal Brown (RBI), and Bradey Tharp added one hit each. Gracee Ellis (4 IP, 7R, 4ER, 7H, 1BB, 1K) was tagged with the pitching loss in the opening game. Katie Traynor (1 IP, 3R, 0ER, 3H, 1BB) also pitched. Haley Robinson (3 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) suffered the second game pitching loss for the Chargers. Maggie Schandera (1.1 IP, 5ER, 3H, 4BB) and Emma Veitch (2.2 IP, 1ER, 1H) also worked in the circle. Georgia Military improved to 24-18 overall and 5-7 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. Georgia Highlands (10-28, 3-9) will seek to snap a six game losing skid Saturday in a home doubleheader against South Georgia CC.

David Smith homered in the sixth inning Tuesday to tie Georgia Highlands’ game with Abraham Baldwin 1-1 then added an RBI single in the seventh inning for a 2-2 tie. The Chargers then added two more seventh inning runs on a Ben Olson single and a Parker Poteet sacrifice fly on their way to a 4-2 win over the Stallions. Max Kops, Mick Moody, Zayd Brannigan, and Ethan Anderson also had base hits for Georgia Highlands in the win. The Chargers utilized six pitchers to secure the conference win including Baylor Akin (4 IP, 1ER, 6H, 1BB, 4K), Caleb Garner (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1K), Cason Rich (0.1 IP, 0R, 1BB, 1K), Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (1 IP, 0R, 1BB), Ryan Suppa (0.2 IP, 0R, 1K), and Chandler Wood (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1K). ABAC (22-18, 7-6 GCAA) and Georgia Highlands (36-3, 12-1) will continue their week-long series Friday night in Tifton with a single game followed by a Saturday doubleheader.

Cartersville starting pitcher Ryan Johnson tossed a five inning, two hitter Tuesday evening as the Purple Hurricanes blanked rival Cass, 10-0. Johnson walked two and struck out three in his five frames of work. Meanwhile, the Canes’ offense posted seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and coasted to victory. Cartersville added two more runs in the third inning and one in the fourth to complete the region win. The Region 7-5A victory also secured a state playoff berth for the Purple Hurricanes for the 26th consecutive season. Harrison Childers (double, 3 RBIs), Hank Smith (double, 2 RBIs), and Curt Bonner (double, 2 RBIs) led Cartersville with two hits each. Elliott Eastin doubled with two RBIs. Jacob Ray contributed one hit and one RBI and Blake Sutton added one hit. Connor Jenkins and Hayden Cole had one hit each for the Colonels. Cass starting pitcher Carson Hill (0.1 IP, 6ER, 4H, 2BB, 1K) was tagged with the loss. Hayden Cole (2.2 IP, 3ER, 3H, 4BB, 3K) and Devan Hutchinson (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2K) also took the mound. Class 5A No. 1-ranked Cartersville (18-5, 9-1) continues the region series at Cass (5-20, 4-6) Friday in a 5 p.m. doubleheader.

A four-run fourth inning keyed Woodland’s 7-4 region victory Tuesday night over visiting Calhoun. The Yellow Jackets grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but Rowan Billings answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run to knot the score at 2-2. Following a scoreless third frame, Calhoun regained the lead 3-2 in the top of the fourth. In the Wildcats’ fourth inning, a single, three doubles, and a sacrifice fly pushed across four runs to go ahead 6-3. Austin Sanders started the fourth with a base hit and scored on a double by Conner Stermer. After a groundout, Mason Williams doubled to score Stermer. Julian Wright doubled next to plate Williams. Wright then stole third and scored on a sac fly by Jakiyon Porter. Ayden Ray had an RBI single in the sixth to give Woodland a 7-3 lead and Calhoun scored a run in the top of the seventh before Ray shut down the inning from the mound. Billings (4 IP, 3R, 1ER, 4H, 0BB, 3K) started on the mound and picked up the Wildcats’ pitching win. Ray (3 IP, 1ER, 2H, 3BB, 3K) retired the final nine outs. Stermer finished with two hits including a double and one RBI. Billings also had two hits including his two run home run. Wright (double, RBI), Porter (double, RBI), Sanders, Williams (RBI), and Jackson Rutledge added one hit apiece. Calhoun, who has been in the top ten of the state’s Class 5A rankings for most of the season, slipped to 15-9 on the season and 5-5 in region play. Woodland (11-14, 4-6) will travel to Gordon County to complete the series with the Yellow Jackets Friday in a 5 p.m. doubleheader.

Ringgold scored a run in the bottom of the first Tuesday night, added two more in the fifth and a single run in the sixth inning on the way to a 4-1 Region 6-AAA win over visiting Adairsville. Adairsville scored a run in the top of the seventh on a two-out, RBI single by Braden Powell but the inning ended with an ensuing strikeout. The Powell safety was the only Adairsville hit in the game. Ringgold’s runs in the late innings were supported by walks issued by Adairsville pitchers. Ringgold managed only three hits in the game but coaxed seven walks. Brenden Carroll (4.2 IP, 3ER, 2H, 5BB, 4K) suffered the pitching loss for Adairsville. Grayson Belcher (1.1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 2BB) retired the final four outs. Ringgold (13-12, 8-3) plays at Adairsville (9-11, 4-7) Thursday at 5:55 p.m.

Cartersville broke open a 1-1 game in the bottom of the third inning by scoring four times, then added three more in the fourth to grab an 8-1 lead on the Canes’ way to a 9-3 victory Saturday over Locust Grove. The contest was the third and final game of the 2022 Battle for Bartow Classic at LakePoint for both teams. The Canes and Wildcats both finished 2-1 in the Classic. Jacob Ray hit a bases loaded triple in the third to give the Hurricanes a 4-1 lead, then Blake Sutton doubled home Ray for a 5-1 advantage. In the next inning, Hank Smith blasted a three-run home run to left field and Cartersville was cruising 8-1. The Wildcats posted a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning narrowing the Canes’ lead to 8-3, but Cartersville’s Drew Rothschild got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to lead off the inning. Cal Goss (5.1 IP, 2R, 0ER, 4H, 2BB, 4K) started on the mound for Cartersville and collected the pitching win. Phillip Schiltz (1.2 IP, 1ER, 5H, 3K) closed out the final five outs on the bump for the Purple Hurricanes. Jake Brasfield and Caleb Daniel finished with one hit each in addition to the extra base hits by Ray, Sutton, Smith, and Rothschild. Cartersville, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, improved to 17-5 on the season. The loss dropped Locust Grove to 17-7. The Canes return to Region 7-5A action Tuesday at home against Cass at 5:55 p.m. in the first of three games against the Colonels. The series will continue Friday at Cass with a doubleheader scheduled for 5 p.m.

Cartersville went with a “different look” lineup Friday afternoon and took care of business with Sandy Creek as the Purple Hurricanes won 8-6 in a Battle for Bartow game played at LakePoint in Emerson. The Canes jumped on top 5-0 through the first two innings and tacked on a single run in the fourth. After the Patriots rallied to tie the score, Cartersville added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to hold off Sandy Creek. The Patriots scored three times in the third inning and posted two more runs in the fourth to narrow their deficit to 6-5. Sandy Creek, ranked 8th in Class 3A, then tied the game in the fifth inning with a single run before the Canes added two late runs to seal the victory. Drew Rothschild started on the mound for Cartersville but also had a nice day at the plate with three hits including a triple and four RBIs. Paul Gamble had two hits including a double and one RBI. Jimbo Gaines also finished with two hits and one RBI. Trip Bradley contributed a double and Gavin Shrewsbury added one hit for the Canes. On the mound, Collin Eaton (3 IP, 0R, 2H, 3BB, 5K) picked up the win in relief of Rothschild (3 IP, 3ER, 2H, 1BB, 5K) and Geoffrey Gore (1 IP, 3R, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 2K). NORTH PAULDING 12, CARTERSVILLE 2 Class 7A North Paulding scored eight runs in the first two innings Friday night and never looked back in a 12-2 win over Cartersville at LakePoint. The Canes, playing as the visiting team, led 1-0 in the top of the first inning but mustered only one more run in the third inning. Cartersville totaled just four hits and committed four errors in the loss. Cayden Sheffield (double, RBI), Tysen Benford (two doubles, 2 RBIs), and Dylan Martin finished with three hits each for the Wolfpack as North Paulding amassed a dozen hits. Curt Bonner had two hits for Cartersville including a double. Jacob Ray (double) and Jake Brasfield contributed one hit each. Elliott Eastin drove in a run for the Canes with a sacrifice fly. Jackson Greer (5 IP, 2ER, 4H, 3BB, 6K) and DeShawn Morgan (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 2K) combined on the mound for the Wolfpack to compile eight strikeouts. Colt McKibben (1.2 IP, 8R, 6ER, 4H, 6BB, 3K) suffered the pitching loss for Cartersville. Tyler Williamson (2.1 IP, 2ER, 4H, 1BB, 1K), Paul Gamble (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 2BB, 2K), and Sawyer Wilson (0.2 IP, 1ER, 3H, 2K) also pitched for the Hurricanes. North Paulding improved to 13-9 for the season. Cartersville (16-5) plays Locust Grove Saturday at 1 p.m. in the final game of the 2022 Battle for Bartow Classic. RINGGOLD 12, WOODLAND 7 In the Wildcats’ second game at the Battle for Bartow Classic, Woodland lost to Ringgold 12-7. Playing as the visitors, Woodland scored five times in the top of the fifth inning to tie the score 5-5 before Ringgold responded with seven runs across their next two frames. The base on balls was a nemesis for the Wildcats’ pitching staff. Ringgold managed only five hits, but the Tigers took advantage of a dozen walks issued by Woodland pitchers. Jacob Gravett had two hits including a triple and three RBIs for the Woodland offense. Rowan Billings also had two hits and drove in one run. Ayden Ray finished with one hit and two RBIs. Bret Good, Jackson Rutledge, Mason Williams, and Julian Wright added one hit apiece for the Wildcats. CEDARTOWN 9, WOODLAND 2 A four-run fourth inning gave Cedartown a 5-0 lead and launched the Bulldogs to an eventual 9-2 win over Woodland in both teams’ final game Friday at the 2022 Battle for Bartow Classic at LakePoint. Woodland narrowed the Bulldogs’ lead to 5-2 in the sixth inning, but Cedartown put the game away with another four run burst in the seventh. Julian Wright and Jacob Gravett had two hits each for the Wildcats in the loss. Austin Sanders drove in a run with a triple and Bret Good added one base hit. Hunter Shirley (4 IP, 5R, 3ER, 7H, 3BB, 2K) suffered the Woodland pitching loss. Tore Foss (2 IP, 0R, 4BB, 3K) worked a pair of scoreless innings. Wright (1 IP, 4ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) also pitched for the Wildcats. Cedartown, ranked fourth in Class 4A, won two of three games in the Classic and improved to 17-7 for the year. Woodland (10-14, 3-6) returns to Region 7-5A play Tuesday hosting 6th-ranked Calhoun at 5:55 p.m. LOCUST GROVE 12, CASS 1 Locust Grove built an 11-0 lead over Cass in the first three innings Saturday at LakePoint and beat the Colonels 12-1 in five innings at the Battle for Bartow Classic. The Wildcats took advantage of ten walks by Cass pitchers and needed only six hits to take the win. Keyshawn Wright hit a three-run home run in the third inning and Landen Baird had two hits for Locust Grove. Four other Wildcats drove in one run each. Three Locust Grove pitchers combined to limit the Colonels to only one hit in the contest. Aidan Larkin singled in the top of the fourth inning to break up a potential no-hitter. He scored later in the inning for the Colonels’ only run. Locust Grove improved to 17-6 on the season. The Wildcats are currently in second place in Region 4-5A just one game behind Ola. RINGGOLD 5, CASS 0 The Colonels and Tigers battled for five scoreless innings Friday night at LakePoint before Ringgold pushed across five runs in the sixth to win 5-0 in a Battle for Bartow Classic matchup. Ryder Fairchild hit a solo home run to lead off the sixth and break the scoreless tie. After a pop out, three consecutive hits gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead. Ty Gilbert followed with a two-run home run and Ringgold had enough to take home the win. Ringgold pitchers Robbie Bates (6 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 6K) and Hudson Chandler (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1K) kept the Colonels off the base paths for the most part. The duo scattered three total hits and issued only one walk while striking out seven. The Ringgold sixth inning spoiled a nice pitching start by Cayden Roberts (5.1 IP, 5ER, 8H, 0BB, 2K) who kept the Tigers off the scoreboard for five frames. Hayden Cole (1.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 2K) retired the final five outs with two strikeouts. Roberts had two of the Colonels’ three hits. Carson Hill added one safety for Cass. Ringgold improved to 12-12 on the season. Cass (5-19, 4-5) returns to Region 7-5A action Tuesday at No. 1-ranked Cartersville. First pitch is scheduled for 5:55 p.m.
