The Loganville Red Devils won their sixth state championship since 2008 and have now won four of the last five Class 5A state titles after defeating Cartersville 9-0 Tuesday night at AdventHealth Stadium in Rome. Tuesday’s winner-take-all state championship game was forced last Saturday when the Hurricanes defeated Loganville 1-0 after losing the first game in the best-of-three series 5-4. Loganville pitchers Matthew Heard (6 IP, 0R, 1H, 3BB, 5K) and Trenton Burnett (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 1K) combined on a one-hitter to shutout the Canes for only the third time this season. Meanwhile, the Red Devils’ offense scored twice in the second inning and four times in the third before adding on a single run in the fourth inning and two more in the seventh. Loganville finished the night with nine hits. Jackson Chizek had three hits and Sherman Johnson followed with two including one triple. Gage Fullerton, who was one of four Red Devils with one hit each, accounted for four Loganville RBIs. The Hurricanes utilized a quartet of pitchers including Colt McKibben (1 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB), Phillip Schiltz (5 IP, 5ER, 6H, 2BB, 1K), Geoffrey Gore (0.2 IP, 2ER, 1H, 2BB), and Collin Eaton (0.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K). ATHLETES BEYOND BARTOW PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (9th-yr. pro; Triple-A Detroit Tigers affiliate; Georgia Southern University; Cartersville HS) … worked a scoreless seventh inning last Saturday in the Mud Hens 12-2 win over Indianapolis. The southpaw allowed one hit and struck out two. Last Thursday he struck out the only batter faced in the second inning of an eventual 8-4 loss to the Indians. Toledo (21-19) plays a six-game series at home this week — Tuesday through Sunday — against the International League West Division leading Nashville Sounds. CONNOR JUSTUS — Charleston (WV) Dirty Birds (7th-yr. pro; Triple-A Atlantic League; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS) … in games last Tuesday through Thursday at the Kentucky Wild Health Genomes, the shortstop was 5-for-13 with one walk, one RBI, and two runs scored. He was also 0-for-5 in Sunday’s game at the Gastonia Honey Hunters. The Dirty Birds (13-15) were 2-4 last week and are currently in third place in the Atlantic League’s South Division. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Tampa Tarpons (5th-yr. pro; Class A New York Yankees affiliate; Cartersville HS) … made his return to Hudson Valley, where he spent his entire 2021 campaign, after being promoted from the Low-A Tampa Tarpons to the Yankees' High-A affiliate. Prior to being called up, he appeared in two home games against the St. Lucie Mets, finishing hitless with three walks and a run scored in six at-bats. He concluded the week with a pair of road games at the Brooklyn Cyclones. In the first game, Seigler went 3-for-3, with a double, a hit by pitch, two runs scored and two runs driven in. The 22-year-old followed that up by going 1-for-1 at the plate, with two walks and two runs scored. COLLEGE BASEBALL MASON BARNETT — Auburn University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … was saddled with the pitching loss last Friday in a 5-1 loss and 3-1/3 inning start at Kentucky. The right-hander, now 2-2 on the season, surrendered four earned runs on five hits and two walks. Barnett struck out five. The Tigers (37-18, 16-13 SEC), seeded fifth in the SEC Championship Tournament, will face Kentucky Tuesday in an elimination play-in game. The winner moves into the double-elimination portion of the tournament on Wednesday. STEVEN SPELL — Young Harris College (Jr., Cass HS) … in the Mountain Lions’ three games at the NCAA D-II Southeast Regional No. 2, Spell was 0-for-7 with three walks and one run scored as YHC beat Belmont Abbey but was eliminated by two losses to Wingate. Spell started all 51 games this season and finished with a .310 batting average. He had nine doubles, three home runs, and 31 RBIs. DAVIS WILLIAMS — Birmingham-Southern College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … faced the minimum and closed out the ninth inning of the Panthers’ 10-2 Lynchburg Regional title win over Salve Regina. BSC also beat Earlham College and 11th-ranked Lynchburg University to win the tournament. The 3rd-ranked Panthers (41-8) advance to the NCAA D-III Super Regionals where they will play a best-of-three series at No. 12 Trinity University (Texas).

After narrowly dropping Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader in the GHSA Class 5A State Championship series to Loganville, Cartersville scored a first inning run on an infield error in Game 2 and right hand pitcher Caden Carroll made it stand up in a 1-0 win. The doubleheader split means the rubber game of the best-of-three series will be played Monday night back at AdventHealth Stadium in Rome. Carroll, who stayed undefeated on the mound this season, tossed a gem in a spot the Hurricanes certainly needed it. He scattered four hits and did not walk a batter in earning his 12th win of the year. He needed only 87 pitches and struck out nine in his complete-game shutout. Curt Bonner opened the Canes’ first inning with a base hit and was replaced on the bag at first when Elliott Eastin bounced into a fielder’s choice. Caleb Daniel followed with a single that moved Eastin into scoring position at second base. Drew Rothschild then hit a hard ground ball that was misplayed by the Red Devils’ third baseman allowing Eastin to cross the plate. Loganville advanced a baserunner to third with two outs in the top of the sixth for their greatest threat, but Carroll got out of the frame with a comeback groundout he fielded himself. All five of Cartersville’s hits in Game 2 came from the top three batters in the Hurricane order. Eastin and Daniel had two singles each. Bonner had one. GAME ONE: LOGANVILLE 5, CARTERSVILLE Cartersville trailed 4-0 heading into the sixth inning of the series opener before challenging the Red Devils late. The Canes rallied for four runs in the sixth to tie the score 4-4 off starter Dawson Coe (5 IP, 4ER, 5H, 3BB, 4K). Matthew Heard (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 2K) picked up the Loganville pitching win by retiring the final six outs. He shut down the Canes’ sixth following a sac bunt with a pair of strikeouts. Bonner and Eastin coaxed back-to-back walks to open the Purple Hurricanes’ sixth inning. Daniel singled to load the bases before Rothschild doubled into left field. Daniel scored all the way from first when the Loganville left fielder made an error and Rothschild ended up at third base. Three pitches later, Hank Smith reached on an infield single sending Rothschild to the plate for a 4-4 tie. Loganville scored what would be their game-winning run in the bottom of that same sixth inning. Sherman Johnson singled, Christian Donaldson doubled with one out, and Johnson scored when Jaylen Jones groundout out. Cartersville starting pitcher Ryan Johnson (5 IP, 5R, 4ER, 8H, 1BB, 4K) suffered the Game 1 pitching loss. Phillip Schiltz (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1K) retired the final three outs for the Hurricanes. Daniel finished with two hits in the opening game. Rothschild (double, 2 RBIs), Smith (RBI), and Blake Sutton added one hit apiece. Cartersville (32-7) and Loganville (31-9) will play a winner-take-all game Monday night with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.

Cartersville products Chanc Willis and Dalton Henson, both sophomores at Reinhardt University, helped the Eagles to a tie for thirteenth place this week at the NAIA Men’s Golf Championship in Silvis, Illinois. The 72-hole national championship tournament was conducted at the 6,691-yard, par-71 TPC at Deere Run, site of the annual John Deere Classic on the PGA Tour. Keiser University won the 2022 title with a four round total of 1130 (6-under-par). Dalton State (GA) was national runner-up with a 3-under-par 1133. Bellevue University (NE) (1148), Houston-Victoria (1155), and Ottawa University (AZ) (1157) rounded out the top five teams. Reinhardt was one of four Georgia schools to finish in the top thirteen. Point University (1160) was 7th and Coastal Georgia (1172) was 12th. Coastal Georgia is led by head coach Mike Cook, a Cartersville High product as well. Jack Dudeck (The Master’s University) and Jakob Stavag Stubhaug (Keiser University) shared the individual title with 72-hole totals of 276 (8-under-par). Willis shot 69-77-72-76 to finish tied for 51st. Henson finished with rounds of 79-75-77-76 to finish 87th. Reinhardt was led by Hunter Clay who fired rounds of 70-68-73-72 for the Eagles and placed tenth.

A pair of former Cartersville High golfers — Chanc Willis and Dalton Henson — have helped Reinhardt University’s men’s team to a tie for eleventh place through the first three rounds of the 2022 NAIA National Championship Tournament. The tournament is being held at TPC at Deere Run (6,691-yards, par-71) in Silvis, Illinois with the final round Friday. Willis, who is tied for 42nd individually in the field that started with 156 players, has rounds of 69-77-72 — 218 through the first 54 holes. Henson has rounds of 79-75-77 — 231 and is tied for 90th individually. Hunter Clay leads the Eagles through the first three rounds (70-68-73—211) and is tied for 12th. Brooks Gineris (71-77-73 — 221) is tied for 54th and Jack Haller (77-76-73 — 226) is tied for 75th. Keiser University is at the top of the team leaderboard with a 9-under-par 843. Dalton State is two shots back at 845 and Bellevue University (Nebraska) is third at 857. Point University (858) and Ottawa University (Arizona) (860) round out the top five. Houston-Victoria (864) and Wayland Baptist (864) are tied for sixth. USC-Beaufort (866), British Columbia (867), and Texas Wesleyan (871) complete the top ten heading into the final round. Seventeen teams and 99 individual players made the 36-hole cut.

HOUSTON – Cartersville product and University of Houston graduate pitcher Hannah Todd wrapped up her collegiate career with National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Central Region honors, the organization announced on Thursday, May 19. The right-handed pitcher earned her first All-Region award after finishing the season with a team-best 2.54 ERA, a team-high 11 wins and team-high 36 appearances while throwing seven complete games and posting three total shutouts, two of which were solo. Todd pitched even better against the top 75 teams in the country, posting a 2.42 ERA against Top 75 RPI teams with four complete games, a save and an opponent batting average of .239. Two of her complete games against Top 75 opponents needed extra innings to be decided. Todd's career-high 9.0 inning complete game against Boise State was the start of a nine-game home winning streak for the Cougars and her 8.0 inning complete game against Texas A&M helped catapult the Cougars into the American Athletic Conference Softball Championship. Todd finished her career with a 14-16 record, 3.70 ERA, 195.0 innings pitched and 96 strikeouts. Todd pitched one season at North Carolina before playing three seasons at Kansas. Todd's career-best season in 2022 was the only season where she donned the Cougars' scarlet and white.

Cartersville High product Buck Brumlow and the University of Georgia men’s golf team qualified for the NCAA National Championship Tournament Wednesday with a fourth place team finish at the Bryan, Texas Regional at Traditions Club. Brumlow finished the 54-hole Regional with a tie for 29th place individually. He was 4-over-par for the tournament with rounds of 72-68-80 — 220. Other Bulldogs’ individual final scores included: Maxwell Ford (T5, -3, 213), Trent Phillips (T12, -1, 215), Ben Van Wyk (T39, +6, 222), and Nic Cassidy (T45, +8, 224) in the 76-player field. Arizona (-13) won the Bryan Regional followed by Pepperdine (-8), Texas A&M (-4), Georgia (-1), and Kansas (+3). Those five teams each qualify for the NCAA National Championship Tournament May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. Thirty teams qualified for the NCAA Championship from six regionals across the country. The Championship will consist of three days of stroke play on Friday, May 27 thru Sunday, May 29 (54 holes), after which the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team will be determined. That is followed by a final day of 18 holes of stroke play on Monday, May 30 to determine the top eight teams that will advance to match play as well as the 72-hole individual champion. The team national champion will be determined by a match-play format that will consist of quarterfinals and semifinals conducted on Tuesday, May 31, followed by finals on Wednesday, June 1.

Georgia Highlands College baseball was eliminated from the post-season Wednesday dropping the second straight game of the Chargers’ best-of-three Appalachian District Championship series at Walters State CC. Walters State won the first game Tuesday 3-2 and clinched the series Wednesday afternoon with an 11-6 victory. After the Senators took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning Wednesday, the Chargers narrowed the margin to 4-3 over the next three frames. Zayd Brannigan hit a two-run homer in the second inning and Ethan Anderson hit a solo home run in the fourth. Walters State extended the lead to 5-3 in the sixth and took control with a five-run seventh inning building a 10-3 lead. Anderson hit another home run in the eighth for two more Chargers’ runs and delivered an RBI single in the ninth, but GHC came up five runs short. Senators’ pitcher Matt Harrell struck out 13 and tossed a nine inning, complete-game for the Walters State pitching win. Georgia Highlands utilized five different hurlers including Zachary Murray (0.2 IP, 4ER, 3H, 4BB), Hunter Goodwin (5.1 IP, 3ER, 6H, 1BB, 2K), Cason Rich (1 IP, 3ER, 1H, 2BB), Caleb Garner (1 IP, 1ER, 2H) and Zack Valentine (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K). The Cartersville High boys golf team finished third at the 2022 GHSA Class 5A State Championships. The 36-hole tournament was conducted at the 6,700-yard, par-72 Okefenokee Country Club in Blackshear. The Canes shot 296 Monday and 311 Tuesday for a 607 (31-over-par) total. Starr’s Mill won the Class 5A championship with an impressive 578 (2-over-par) total. Wayne County was second at 599 (23-over-par). Woodward Academy (+32) and Northgate (+33) rounded out the top five teams. Jake Lawson (71-75, +2) placed ninth individually to lead Cartersville. Jake Wehunt tied for 21st (73-81, +10). Camden Meadows (75-80, +11) and Andrew Lutjens (77-78, +11) tied for 24th. Brody Tidwell (77-79, +12) tied for 26th and Anderson McCary (86-79, +21) was 40th in the 79 player field.
