Elle Causby recorded a hat trick for Adairsville as the Lady Tigers blanked Murray County 5-0 Thursday night in Chatsworth. Causby scored two minutes into the match and added a second goal just before halftime. The sophomore added to the Lady Tigers’ advantage with a third goal in the 51st-minute. Seventeen minutes later, Causby made an assist on Megan Hardin’s goal for a 4-0 lead and Kaylee Jordan added the Tigers’ fifth goal with three minutes remaining. Hardin and Jordan along with Emma Collins and Sam Pasley contributed one assist each. Adairsville (8-2-1, 4-2) managed to control play most of the evening and keeper Annie McCormick recorded the shutout. The Lady Tigers host Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe next Thursday, March 24. In a full slate of soccer action Tuesday night, the Cartersville girls and boys swept visiting Hiram with shutout victories in Region 7-5A play. Cass split non-region games with visiting North Murray at Cochran Stadium; Adairsville split Region 6-3A matches at Ringgold; and the Woodland girls were shutout at Kennesaw Mountain in non-region play. Cartersville (6-6-1, 1-2) plays at Woodland Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 2, RINGGOLD 0 Following a scoreless struggle through the games first 66 minutes, Adairsville’s Emma Collins broke the ice with a goal off her own corner kick to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead. Eight minutes later, Elle Causby found the net off an assist from Kaylee Jordan and Adairsville held on to earn a Region 6-AAA win at Ringgold, 2-0. Adairsville keeper, Annie McCormick, was credited for her efforts Tuesday and defender Mia Scott was credited with multiple key stops on counterattacks. Ringgold falls to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in region games. The Adairsville girls (7-2-1, 3-2) travel to Murray County Friday for a 5 p.m. kickoff. RINGGOLD BOYS 2, ADAIRSVILLE 0 The Adairsville boys were shutout at Ringgold Tuesday night, 2-0, dropping their season record to 4-8 and region mark to 1-4. KENNESAW MOUNTAIN 10, WOODLAND GIRLS 0 The Lady Cats were shutout at Kennesaw Mountain Tuesday night 10-0 in a non-region contest. The Lady Mustangs improved to 5-8. Cartersville scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning Tuesday evening to defeat the Calhoun Yellow Jackets, 4-2, in the opener of a three-game Region 7-5A series this week. Calhoun led 2-0 early, but the Canes used two hit batsmen, a throwing error on a pickoff attempt, a wild pitch, an RBI groundout, four consecutive singles, and a passed ball — all in the fourth inning — to take the lead for good. Cartersville pitchers Ryan Johnson (5 IP, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 2K) and Phillip Schiltz (2 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 3K) combined to limit Calhoun to a pair of earned runs on seven hits and two walks. The Canes’ hurlers combined for five strikeouts. Johnson earned the win with Schiltz picking up a save. Hank Smith, who finished with two hits, Harrison Childers, Jacob Ray (RBI), and Blake Sutton (RBI) strung together the fourth inning hits for the Hurricanes. Hill started on the mound and struck out 12 in six innings of work. Only two Hornets reached base during his stint, one on a second inning single and the other on a hit batsman in the fourth. Hutchinson did not allow a hit or a walk but the Hornets scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of infield errors and a dropped third strike putout at first base. Aidan Larkin led the Colonels’ offense with three hits including a double and one RBI. Wesley Collins and Andrew Middleton contributed one hit and one RBI each. Connor Jenkins tripled, Hayden Cole doubled, and Chase Botts finished with one hit for Cass. The loss drops Hiram to 1-11 on the season and 0-1 in Region 7-5A. Cass (2-11, 1-0) will host the Hornets in a region doubleheader Friday starting at 5 p.m. BLESSED TRINITY 6, WOODLAND 3 After the visiting Wildcats grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, 7th-ranked Blessed Trinity scored twice in the bottom of the frame and added single runs in the third through sixth innings to top Woodland Tuesday night, 6-3. Max Puckett had three hits including a double, a home run, a walk and two RBIs to lead the Titans’ offense. Jake Lankie and Porter Buursema combined on the mound for Blessed Trinity limiting the Wildcats to a pair of earned runs on eight hits and one walk. The Titans’ hurlers struck out seven. Chase Carson had three hits including a leadoff first-inning double for Woodland. He scored the Wildcats’ first run on a Blessed Trinity infield error. Jakiyon Porter finished with two hits for the Wildcats. Austin Sanders doubled in the top of the fifth and scored Woodland’s second run. Ayden Ray doubled in the sixth and later scored on a groundout double play. Jacob Gravett contributed one hit and Julian Wright was credited with one RBI. Georgia Highlands hit three home runs and rattled off a dozen hits Tuesday afternoon to rout visiting Cleveland State CC 14-4 at LakePoint. After starting the 2022 season with 16 straight wins, Georgia Highlands has now reeled off eight straight wins after a brief two-game skid in late February. David Smith, Ben Olson, and Parker Poteet each hit home runs for the Chargers Tuesday and all three finished with two hits. Ethan Anderson, Caden Smith, and Austin Tienda also had two hits each for GHC. Those six hitters also combined for 10 RBIs. Zachary Murray (3 IP, 2ER, 2H, 3K) picked up the Chargers’ pitching win in relief of starter Jacob Ryan (4 IP, 2ER, 7H, 5K). Ryan Suppa (1 IP, 1K) closed out the final frame. Blustery weather forced Cartersville Little League to delay its 2022 Opening Day games until Sunday, but the first set of games are in the books and the league is off and running for its 68th season. Originally scheduled to begin this past Saturday, the opening games were pushed back one day due to an arctic blast that moved through the Cartersville area. The Major League Baseball lockout came to an end last week enabling players to make their way to what will be an abbreviated spring training in 2022. Cartersville High product, Sam Howard, has joined the Pittsburgh Pirates in Bradenton, Florida and they will being Grapefruit League games this weekend. Meanwhile on the professional hardwoods, Cartersville native Ashton Hagans continues to be a major contributor for Raptors 905 of the NBA’s G League. His team is clinging to a narrow lead in the G League’s Eastern Conference with the regular season winding down. On collegiate diamonds, former Cartersville high pitcher Hannah Todd had her best performances of the year picking up a pair of wins over the past week while a pair of baseball athletes made major contributions with their respective teams. Cass product, Steven Spell, hit .545 and scored seven runs over the weekend for Young Harris College as the Mountain Lions swept Augusta and former Cartersville Hurricane, Preston Welchel, hit .444 for the week with a pair of weekend home runs for Coastal Alabama-South. On the golf links Cartersville High graduate Chanc Willis fired off increasingly strong rounds, culminating in a two-under-par 70, to help Reinhardt win the Skyhawk Invitational by nine strokes. PRO BASKETBALL ASHTON HAGANS — Raptors 905 NBA G League (Cartersville native; University of Kentucky; Newton HS) … After sitting out a 126-121 win last Thursday at College Park, Hagans returned to the starting lineup Saturday at Lakeland. Despite playing just 17 minutes, Hagans put together a solid line, finishing with seven points, three rebounds and three assists in a 112-109 victory. Raptors 905, an NBA Toronto Raptors affiliate, continues to lead the G League’s Eastern Conference with a 19-7 record. The team leads the Delaware Blue Coats and the Motor City Cruise by one game in the standings with just six regular season games remaining. The Pirates will play a revised 18-game Grapefruit League schedule that begins Friday at LECOM Park against the New York Yankees. The 29-year-old southpaw improved his strikeout rate to 12.0 per nine innings last season. His slider produced a .190 batting average against and a 40.8 percent strikeout rate. Howard allowed only 14.8 percent of inherited runners to score in 2021, which was fifth-best among NL relievers who had at least 25 inherited runners. Howard has appeared in 100 MLB games with 89 innings pitched. He has 111 career strikeouts at the Major League level and a 7-7 record. SOFTBALL BELLA CARNES — Georgia College (So., Woodland HS) … made a start at second base Sunday in a 6-4 loss to Young Harris College going 0-for-2 at the plate. Conner Todaro had four hits for GHC including a home run, a double, and three RBIs. Conner Perry (7 IP, 2R, 1ER, 3H, 0BB, 11K) earned the pitching win with 11 strikeouts in a seven inning start. Ryan Suppa (0.1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1K), Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (0.1 IP), Hunter Goodwin (0.1 IP, 1K), and Chandler Wood (1 IP, 1K) all pitched in relief for the Chargers. Georgia Highlands College baseball swept a doubleheader with Macomb CC (Michigan) Sunday at LakePoint, winning 16-5 and 9-2 over the Monarchs. In the first game, the Chargers scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and added nine more over the next three innings for a runaway win. Four Georgia Highlands pitchers — Gage Vailes, Garrett Sagro, Keegan Pulford-Thorpe, and Bubba Luke — combined to limit Macomb to just three earned runs on six hits and four walks. Vailes recorded six strikeouts in the first four innings to earn the win. Ethan Anderson had three hits for the Chargers including a double and one RBI. Ben Olson had two hits including a grand slam. Caden Smith (2 RBIs) and Zayd Brannigan also finished with two hits including a double each. David Smith contributed a double and three RBIs and Conner Todaro tossed in one hit. Austin Slate, Parker Poteet, and Austin Tienda each added one RBI. The Chargers’ offense continued its success in Game 2. GHC scored in each of the first four frames and grabbed an early 9-0 lead before finishing off the Monarchs in a seven-run win. Eric Moore (6 IP, 2R, 0ER, 7H, 1BB, 10K) struck out ten in a six inning start for the Chargers. Zachary Murray (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) wrapped up the final inning on the mound with a pair of strikeouts. Ben Olson paced the Chargers’ attack with three hits including a double and two RBIs. Caden Smith had two hits including a home run and two RBIs. Conner Todaro also finished with two hits and two RBIs and Parker Poteet contributed a two hit game. Ethan Anderson drove in two runs with one hit. Max Kops, David Smith, and Mick Moody added one hit apiece. Macomb falls to 1-9 on the season with the two losses. Georgia Highlands (23-2) will square off with the Monarchs again Monday in an 11 a.m. first pitch at LakePoint before hosting Cleveland State CC Tuesday (3 p.m.) and a doubleheader with Brewton Parker College Wednesday (1 p.m.)

Camden Hillhouse scored three goals and assisted on another as the Cass boys soccer team won at Hiram Friday night, 10-1. The Colonels built a 4-0 lead by the intermission and added to their lead in the second half. Christian Villella scored a goal and assisted on three scores. Juan Pajarito contributed one goal and one assist. Carlos Morales, Grayson Dysart, Kayden Pineda, Jose Rodriguez, and Jordan Solis added one goal apiece. Alex Hernandez assisted on three of the scores. The loss dropped Hiram to 0-8-1 on the season and 0-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Colonels (8-3-1, 2-1) host a non-region match with North Murray Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. before traveling to Blessed Trinity Friday for a key region game with the Titans at 5:30 p.m. HIRAM 3, CASS GIRLS 0 The Lady Hornets scored twice in the opening half and added an insurance goal in the second half to defeat visiting Cass Friday night, 3-0. The win for the Hiram girls (1-10, 1-1) was their first of the season. The Lady Colonels (2-8-1, 0-3) play North Murray at home Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and travel to Blessed Trinity for a 7:30 p.m. Friday night. CALHOUN SOCCER TEAMS SWEEP WOODLAND FOR REGION WINS The Calhoun girls and boys soccer teams both shut out their opponents from Woodland Friday night in Region 7-AAAAA games. The Calhoun girls defeated the Lady Cats 2-0 and the Calhoun boys blanked the Wildcats, 3-0. The Lady Jackets improved to 4-5-1 overall and 2-1 in region play. The Yellow Jackets are now 3-6-1 overall and also 2-1 in the region. The Woodland girls (5-4-2, 1-2) play at Kennesaw Mountain Tuesday in a 6 p.m. match and will host Cartersville Friday at 5:30 p.m. The Woodland boys (5-4-2, 1-2) return to their home pitch Friday night against local region rival Cartersville at 7 p.m. BLESSED TRINITY BLANKS CARTERSVILLE TEAMS The Cartersville girls and boys soccer teams lost Region 7-AAAAA matchups at Blessed Trinity Friday night. The Lady Canes were shut out 10-0 and the Cartersville boys were blanked 9-0. The Blessed Trinity girls improved to 10-1-1 overall and 3-0 in region play. The Titans’ boys team improved to 6-6 overall and 3-0 in the region. The Cartersville girls (3-7-1, 1-1) and boys (5-6-1, 0-2) have two region matches this week. The Hurricanes host Hiram Tuesday and play at Woodland Friday.

The Cartersville High School girls and boys track and field teams both came away with fourth-place finishes Thursday night at the Central-Carroll Lion Meet in Carrollton. The Central-Carroll girls and boys teams were winners in their respective competitions and each scored an identical 206 points. The Bremen girls were runner-up with 105 points followed by LaGrange (96) and Cartersville (74) in the nine-team meet. The LaGrange boys were runner-up with 110 points followed by Bremen (108.5) and Cartersville (97). There were also nine teams in the boys' competition. Sonoraville posted five runs in the first three innings to take a 5-0 lead and never trailed in a 6-2 win Friday night at Cass. Two Phoenix pitchers — Dawson Townsend and AJ Hensley — combined to scatter five hits and two walks while striking out ten Colonels. Chase Botts (4 IP, 5ER, 5H, 3BB, 2K) started on the mound for Cass and was tagged with the loss. Devan Hutchinson (2 IP, 1ER, 3H) and Aidan Larkin (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K) also pitched for the Colonels. Zach Lyles had three hits including a triple for Sonoraville (6-3). Kannon England and Townsend both drove in two runs each for the Phoenix. Jesiel Moctezuma had two hits for the Cass offense. Larkin finished with a hit and two RBIs. Bentley Markley contributed a double and Chris Cabe had the other Cass base hit. Cass (1-11) begins region play Tuesday at Hiram at 5:55 p.m. seeking to end a seven-game skid. The Colonels will complete a three-game region series with the Hornets Friday at home starting at 5 p.m.

Jacob Gravett smacked a one-out, RBI-double into center field Friday night to lift the Woodland Wildcats to a walk-off, extra-inning win over visiting East Paulding 3-2. The extra base hit scored Jakiyon Porter, who had walked to start the Wildcats’ eighth inning, with the game-winning run. The clutch hit ended what was otherwise a pitching duel between the two clubs. Both teams finished the night with only four total hits. East Paulding utilized four different pitchers that combined for 15 strikeouts and six walks. Woodland’s Rowan Billings (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB) picked up the pitching victory for the Wildcats after retiring all three outs in the eighth inning. Nate Rosser (4.1 IP, 2ER, 4H, 4BB, 3K) was the Woodland starter and worked into the fifth inning. Conner Stermer (2.2 IP, 0R, 1BB, 4K) fanned four in an eight-out, scoreless stint. Ayden Ray had one hit and one RBI for Woodland. Julian Wright and Porter had the other Wildcats’ hits. The loss drops East Paulding to 5-8 on the season. Woodland (7-5) begins a three-game Region 7-5A series at 3rd-ranked Blessed Trinity Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. The Wildcats will then complete the series with a home doubleheader against the Titans next Friday at 5 p.m.
