Central-Carroll pounded out 15 hits including seven doubles Wednesday night to defeat the Cass Colonels, 7-4, at the Cass Athletic Complex. The Colonels scored four times in the bottom of the third inning to grab a 4-2 lead at the time, but the visiting Lions still had plenty of offense to come. Caleb Griffis, Gage Gray, Dillon Smith and Blake Ivy combined for ten of the Lions’ hits and six RBIs. Griffis also picked up the pitching win, working into the fifth inning. Carson Hill (4 IP, 6ER, 11H, 1BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for Cass. Devan Hutchinson (2 IP, 1ER, 4H, 2BB, 2K) and Cayden Roberts (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB) pitched in relief for the Colonels. Jesiel Moctezuma, Todd Gaddy, Roberts (2 RBIs), and Hill had one hit each for Cass. Aidan Larkin drove in a run. Central-Carroll improved to 6-2 on the season and completed a two-game sweep of the Colonels. Cass (1-6) will travel to Sonoraville Thursday for a 5:55 p.m. first pitch before traveling to Armuchee for a 1:30 p.m. start Saturday.

Woodland High School’s Elite Athlete of the Month for February is Chase Carson. A junior on the Wildcats’ football and baseball teams, Carson is a defensive back and quarterback on the football team and plays outfield on the baseball squad. Through his first six games this season, Carson has a .455 batting average and is slugging .727 with a home run, three doubles, five RBIs and seven stolen bases. “His time in the weight room and competing on the football field has paid off for his fast start this season,” said Woodland baseball coach Matt Montgomery. “He has been the spark at the top of our lineup and has often jump-started our offense.” The son of Jessica and Brian Carver, Carson would like to continue his education and play college baseball or football. Claire Davis has been selected as the Elite Athlete of the Month for February representing Cass High School. A 6-1 senior on the Lady Colonels’ basketball team, she helped lead her team to a region runner-up finish and a final season record of 23-6. Davis led the team in scoring, rebounds, and blocked shots. “Claire has a deep passion and love for the game, her teammates, and her team,” noted Cass head coach Burt Jackson. “She has unlimited potential and continues to work at becoming the best player she can be. She has numerous D1 and D2 offers and will make a final decision on where she wants to continue her education and play basketball in April.” The daughter of Rachel Davis and sister of Reed and Andi Davis, Claire has a 3.75 GPA enrolled in Honors classes. Victoria Loudon is the February 2022 Elite Athlete of the Month representing Adairsville High School. The daughter of Karen and Josh Loudon, Victoria is a freshman on the Lady Tigers soccer team playing midfield and on the Adairsville defense. “Victoria is a model young athlete,” said Lady Tigers head coach David Sexauer. “She represents her high school with pride on and off the field. She is focused and determined on the field and gets the most out of her abilities by staying in great shape. She often has success late in games when other athletes are tiring. Victoria is a great teammate off the field too. She remains positive and supportive and has her teammates’ respect.” “Victoria is always looking to improve,” added assistant coach Amanda Jones. “No matter her position on the field, she wants to be the best she can be. She continues to impress each practice and game.” Cartersville High School’s February Elite Athlete of the Month is Elora Waterman. A senior wrestler, Waterman placed fourth this season at the GHSA State Championships in the 102-pound division. “Elora has been a great asset to our team,” said Cartersville girls coach Mark Mathison. “Her leadership and drive to compete is second to none. I probably learned more from her this year than she did from me. It was a great pleasure to serve as her coach.” Waterman has been a multinational All-American wrestler the last two years. In her fifth year as a wrestler, she held a 12-6 record this season against boys competing in the 106-pound division. The daughter of Tiffany and Jeremy Waterman, Elora will be an honor graduate and will continue her education at Brewton Parker College where she will receive a wrestling scholarship. The Cartersville riflery team lost a very close match with LaFayette Tuesday, falling by just eight points — 1082-1074. The Canes led through the first two series, outshooting the Ramblers by 14 points in the prone position. LaFayette narrowed the Cartersville lead to eight points during the standing position and then pulled away with a 16 point advantage in kneeling. Cartersville was led by Caleb Adams with 275 points. Angelina Christ was second for the Canes with a 273. Katerina Conley and Luis Rangel fired scores of 264 and 262, respectively. Cartersville, currently in fifth place in Area 10, will host third-place Dalton next Tuesday at the American Legion Post 92 in Cartersville.

Georgia Highlands softball lost both games of a doubleheader with Chattanooga State Tuesday at Star’s Field in Cassville, falling 12-3 and 13-5 to the Tigers. Chattanooga State took control of Game 1 with an eight-run third inning and built a 7-1 lead through just two innings in Game 2 before scoring six more times in the fourth inning. Hailey Cronic had four hits including a home run for the Chargers in the doubleheader. Haley Robinson finished with two hits including a home run and three RBIs. Allison Deweese also had a two hit day with one RBI. Maggie Schandera (3 IP, 10R, 7ER, 9H, 2BB, 1K) and Robinson (1 IP, 6R, 4ER, 7H, 1BB) suffered the pitching losses in the circle. Gracee Ellis (2.2 IP, 7R, 6ER, 6H) and Katie Traynor (3.1 IP, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 2K) both pitched in relief with Traynor appearing in both games. Chattanooga State improved to 14-2 on the season with the doubleheader sweep. Georgia Highlands (6-14) will play at Chattanooga State next Tuesday in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.

The Georgia Highlands Chargers got back to their winning ways Tuesday earning a doubleheader sweep over Roane State CC at LakePoint. The two wins continued a current three-game win streak following a pair of losses over the weekend in the Chargers’ three-game series with Wabash Valley College. In Tuesday’s opener, GHC took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning before the Raiders’ pitching stumbled. The Chargers posted seven more runs in the inning with just one hit to win 10-1. Five walks and three hit batsmen contributed to the Georgia Highlands run production. Max Kops had two hits. Ethan Anderson hit a two-run home run and finished with three RBIs. Ben Olson (2 RBIs), Parker Poteet (double, RBI), Caden Smith (RBI), and Zayd Brannigan (double, RBI) had the other hits. Jacob Ryan (6 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 8K) fanned eight and earned the pitching win. Garrett Sagro (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) closed out the final frame with a pair of strikeouts. In Game 2, the Chargers won in extra innings after coming from behind late in the game. Poteet led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a walk-off, solo home run to lift GHC, 7-6. Roane State led 6-4 heading to the bottom of the seventh but the Chargers tied the game with a two-run home run by David Smith. The blast scored Conner Todaro who had doubled earlier in the inning. Chandler Wood (2 IP, 0R, 2H, 3K) picked up the pitching win and was one of five Chargers’ hurlers utilized in the win. Baylor Akin (2 IP, 4R, 3ER, 3H, 2BB, 2K), Hunter Goodwin (2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 2K), Zach Murray (1.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 2K), and Ryan Suppa (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB) also took the mound for GHC. Smith had two hits including his homer and three RBIs. Ben Olson had two hits including a triple and two RBIs. Poteet had two hits including his game-winner and Todaro had two hits including his important seventh inning double. Max Kops had the other Georgia Highlands’ hit. The Cass girls soccer team got a first half goal from Dayanara Pineda and made it stand up in a 1-0 win Tuesday night at home over Murray County. The loss dropped the Lady Indians to 1-5-1 on the season. Cass (2-6-1, 0-1) hosts Cartersville Friday in a 5:30 p.m. kickoff. The goal came off an assist from Emma Collins. The Lady Mountaineers responded in the second half, however, to send the game to overtime and picked up the Region 6-AAA win in overtime. With five runs in the fifth inning and six more in the seventh, the Woodland Wildcats utilized two big offensive innings Tuesday night to win at Rome 13-8. The Wildcats led 2-1 after on inning but the host Wolves scored six runs across the second through fourth innings to take a 7-2 lead. Woodland tied the game in the fifth and after a scoreless sixth frame, the Wildcats outscored Rome 6-1 in the seventh inning for a five-run non-region victory. Mason Williams had two hits and four RBIs for the Wildcats. Julian Wright followed with a pair of doubles and one RBI. Jakiyon Porter also had a two-hit game with an RBI. Ayden Ray contributed one hit and four RBIs. Chase Carson drove in a run and had one hit while Jackson Rutledge had a double for Woodland. Conner Stermer (3 IP, 1ER, 3H, 1BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win for the Wildcats by retiring the final nine outs. Trion pitchers Jase Mason and Brandon Dover combined to limit the Tigers to a single run while scattering five hits and three walks. The Trion pitching duo combined to strike out six. Jack Nelson (4 IP, 3ER, 3H, 4BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for Adairsville. Peyton Bowen (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 3K) pitched in relief for the Tigers. Chris Roper had a double and one RBI for the Adairsville offense. Braden Powell also doubled. Bowen, Brenden Carroll and Luke Altizer added one hit each. Trion improved to 3-1 with their win. Adairsville (2-4) hosts a doubleheader with Temple Saturday at 12 noon.

The Cartersville High School varsity gymnastics team opened their competition season last Friday at Central High School placing fifth as a team in a field of 45 competitors. The event was won by Bremen High School with 105.70 points. The Canes totaled 88.95 points. Canes' junior Annaston Wilson earned a State Preliminary qualifying score on floor exercise with a score of 9.1. Her performance secures one step toward earning a spot in the GHSA State Preliminaries. Sophomore Jayla Byrd participated in her first varsity meet and scored well in vault and floor with an 8.25 and 8.4, respectively. Sophomore Karley Garrison added quality scores in each of her events. She placed third in All Around with an All Around qualifying score of 34. She also placed third in bars and floor with qualifying individual scores of 8.5 and 9.2. "We're looking at continuing to bank qualifying scores throughout the season and participate in the GHSA Gymnastics State Preliminaries in April," said Cartersville coach Kimberly Mosteller. "Athletes need at least three qualifying scores throughout the season All Around or in individual events. I'm confident the ladies will continue to impress the judges with their skill and expertise." The Cartersville gymnasts will face their next opponents on March 16th at Westminster in Atlanta.
