The Woodland girls and boys cross country teams finished in the top five Saturday in the Silver Division races at the Jesse Owens Classic in Oakville, Alabama. In the girls race, senior Rylee Evans was the top finisher for Woodland in 18:55.78. She finished just over four seconds behind the individual champion as the Lady Cats placed third as a team. Woodland sophomore Olivia Berry placed 17th. juniors Emma Segars and Danielle Thayer placed 32nd and 37th, respectively, and Miranda Pelow rounded out the team scoring with a 55th place run. In the boys race, Woodland's Tyler Jones finished fourth and McKinley Chappell placed sixth leading the Wildcats to a fourth-place team finish. John Forsyth and Kain Tanturri were 43rd and 44th for the Wildcats. Drew Thayer (63rd) and Andy Forsyth (65th) rounded out the Woodland scoring. Cartersville also participated in the Silver races, with the boys placing 10th and the girls coming in 18th. Levi Booth was 37th for the Canes. Malachi Vosburgh (45th), Cainen Crowder (52nd), Barrett Stepp (106th), Paul Hyman (108th) and Sam Peters (114th) were the Cartersville scoring runners. McKinsey Spinks led the Cartersville girls with a 51st overall finish. Anna Grace Boone (89th), Elizabeth Nelson (132nd), Meredith Gaines (140th), Trinity Atkins (141st), and Samantha Herrera (143rd) were the Lady Canes' scoring runners. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 5TH AT LAFAYETTE RACE The Adairsville boys cross country team placed fifth Thursday in the LaFayette Rambler meet. Griffin Bozeman finished eighth in the event, and Brayden Miller came in 10th to help pace the Tigers. Jace Silvers (26th), Chris Pelchat (35th), and Cody Teer (39th) were the other Adairsville runners. In the girls varsity race, sophomore Callie Viktora represented the Tigers and placed 6th of 31 competitors.

Allatoona scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning Saturday to break open a tie game and went on to defeat Cass 5-2 in a non-region matchup at the Cass Athletic Complex. An infield error started the visiting Buccaneers fifth inning and set up a sacrifice bunt followed by three consecutive RBI hits. Allatoona (4-10) led 2-0 until Cass scored twice in the bottom of the third on a two-RBI single by Alexis Woods. Cass pitcher Rachael Lee suffered the loss in a complete game start. She allowed seven hits and no walks with three strikeouts. Three of the Bucs’ five runs were earned. Eryn Lee and Kelly Young had the only other Cass hits. The loss dropped Cass to 9-11 on the season. The Colonels, who are tied with Cartersville for the final state playoff berth from Region 7-AAAAA, have a doubleheader Thursday at Hiram. Cartersville has a doubleheader Wednesday at Blessed Trinity.

Adairsville volleyball split a pair of non-region matches Saturday at Heritage-Catoosa, defeating Christian Heritage in a very tight match 25-22 and 25-23 before falling to the host Generals, 25-7 and 25-15. Lexie Childers had three kills, six assists, and 20 digs in the win over Christian Heritage. Kaylee Jordan contributed a pair of service aces, one kill, and 11 digs. Annie McCormick finished with six assists and six digs against the Lions. In the Tigers’ loss to Heritage-Catoosa, Jordan led Adairsville in kills with six. Lexie Childers had six assists, and Madison Flemons contributed 13 digs and one service ace. Adairsville (18-11-1) will host Temple and Chattooga in a pair of non-region matches Thursday starting at 5 p.m.

Jake Parker threw for two touchdowns and Malachi Jefferies ran for two more scores as 2nd-ranked Cartersville cruised by Cass Friday night at Weinman Stadium, 43-7. Amari White and Paul Gamble also added long touchdown runs for the Hurricanes to round out the Cartersville scoring. White opened the game with an 80-yard jaunt in the first quarter and Parker connected with Jaylen Scott as the Canes grabbed a 15-0 lead. Jefferies added a two-point conversion after the touchdown pass. Cass narrowed the margin to 15-7 midway through the second quarter wth a 27-yard touchdown pass from Devin Henderson to Andrew Nguyen, but that would be as close as the Colonels would get. Parker hit Collin Fletcher for a 21-yard touchdown pass with 1:58 to go in the half to build a 22-7 Cartersville lead at halftime. Jefferies scored on an 11-yard run with 1:51 left in the third quarter and added a 32-yard dash to the end zone with 3:55 left in the game. Gamble’s 75 yard scoring run came with 1:20 to play. Cartersville (5-0, 1-0 Region 7-AAAAA) travels to Hiram next Friday for another region game. Cass (3-3, 0-1) hosts Woodland at Doug Cochran Stadium. The Adairsville Tigers second half rally and their final possession came up just short Friday night in a 24-19 home loss to the Ringgold Tigers. Adairsville trailed 21-7 at halftime and limited the previously high-powered Ringgold offense to only a field goal in the second half, but came up five points short despite an opportunity on their final possession of the night. Adairsville, started that final possession at their own three yard line and reached the Ringgold 35 yard line before turning the ball over on downs. Three final pass plays all fell incomplete in the final seconds allowing Ringgold to escape with the Region 6-AAA win. Ringgold quarterback, Mason Parker, threw a pair of first half touchdown passes and running back Kori Dumas scored on a 42-yard scamper as Ringgold carried a two touchdown lead to the intermission. Parker’s first TD pass went to Malachi Hill from 33 yards out at the 7:55 mark of the first quarter. The second TD pass went to Jordan Widemann from 37 yards with just 50 seconds remaining in the half. Adairsville’s first half touchdown was an 18 yard strike from quarterback Jonathan Gough to Grayson Belcher with 4:51 remaining in the first quarter. The scoring play tied the game 7-7 at the time and capped an 8-play, 65-yard drive. In the second half, a mostly stalemated third quarter ended on a high note for Adairsville. Gough connected with a streaking Evan Sanders for a 66-yard touchdown pass with 0:41 left in the quarter. The extra point kick missed wide left, but Adairsville had pulled to within one score at 21-13. Ringgold got its only points of the second half on a 22-yard field goal by Landon Eaker that made the score 24-13 with exactly 6 minutes remaining. Then Adairsville’s ensuing drive closed out the scoring when Gough tossed a high fade route to Evan Sanders for a 15-yard touchdown. Gough’s two-point conversion pass was intercepted leaving the score 24-19 with 4:53 to play. Ringgold (6-0, 4-0) hosts LaFayette next Friday night in another region game. Adairsville (4-1, 2-1) will look to regroup next Friday at Coahulla Creek.

Ninth-ranked Blessed Trinity rolled to a 40-3 win Thursday night at Woodland as both teams opened their 2021 Region 7-AAAAA slates. Titans’ running back Evan Dickens ran for two touchdowns and caught one touchdown pass to pace the Blessed Trinity offense. Blessed Trinity’s heavily recruited running back, Justice Haynes, added a pair of touchdown runs in the win. Christopher Sanchez booted a 24-yard field goal in the third quarter for the Wildcats only points of the night. Blessed Trinity (4-2, 1-0) hosts 7th-ranked Calhoun next Friday in Roswell. Woodland (1-5, 0-1) plays next Friday at Cass.

Cartersville volleyball outlasted Etowah in five sets Thursday night, 26-24, 13-25, 14-25, 25-20, and 15-10. “We were a little sloppy at the beginning but got it together and fought to win,” said Canes’ head coach Alicen Pearson. “Lauren Lawson and Ailee England led our offense and Mia Nicklas and Grace Merritt led our defense. London Moultrie played strong and smart which helped us in a lot of side outs.” Lawson finished with 13 kills. England and Moultrie had eight kills each. Tennessee Abernathy contributed five blocks. Lily Gochee totaled 27 assists. Cartersville improved to 20-9 on the season. Etowah falls to 17-13.

Cass softball won a non-region game over visiting Darlington Thursday night, 16-8. Ansley Hight had four hits, including a pair of home runs, a double, and six RBIs for the Colonels. Rachael Lee also had four hits including three doubles and four RBIs. Eryn Lee contributed three hits. Reese Howard had a pair of doubles with one RBI and Kelly Young added two hits with one RBI. Haylee Dishmon (RBI), Olivia Woods, and Alexis Woods had the other Cass hits. With the win, Cass improved to 9-10 on the season and will host Class 6A Allatoona Saturday at 11 a.m. LAFAYETTE 15, ADAIRSVILLE 0 LaFayette’s Ava Brown tossed a three inning, no-hitter and the Ramblers scored 15 runs on nine hits along with five Tigers’ errors. LaFayette improved to 13-9 on the season and 11-4 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville falls to 6-16 on the season and finished 4-12 in region play. CAMPBELL 6, WOODLAND 1 In a non-region game Thursday night at Hamilton Crossing Park, Campbell built a 5-1 lead by the third inning and held on to defeat Woodland 6-1. Cassie Jones had two hits for Woodland. Dylynn Motes (double), Cambrie Carrington, and Peyton Dorn added one hit each for the Lady Cats. Campbell improved to 12-11 on the season. Woodland slips to 13-13-2.

Adairsville volleyball dropped a pair of non-region matches Thursday night in Jasper, falling to Cherokee and Pickens. The Tigers lost to Cherokee 25-7 and 25-14. Lexie Childers had 18 assists and 10 digs in the loss to the Warriors. Yatorrean Hale added three kills. In a 25-16, 25-23 loss to Pickens, Childers finished with 10 assists, four digs, three kills, and one block. Hale followed with three kills, two digs, and one assist. Haley Stiles added three kills and one assist. Autumn Henderson totaled four blocks. Adairsville (18-10-1) plays at Heritage-Catoosa Saturday morning.

The Cass softball team challenged late, but came up a run short in a 4-3 Region 7-AAAAA loss Wednesday evening at Blessed Trinity. The host Titans grabbed a 3-0 lead through the first three innings. Blessed Trinity utilized a pair of singles, a ground out, and a wild pitch to score a run in the first. The Titans then added two runs in the third on three hits and an infield error. Cass cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth taking advantage of an error, a hit batsman, and a pair of singles including Savannah Tatum’s two-RBI single. Blessed Trinity added a run in the bottom of the fourth on a walk and two hits to make the score 4-2. Cass loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning but a strikeout and a ground out ended that threat. The Lady Colonels then produced three hits in the top of the seventh to make the score 4-3, but the game ended on a strikeout with the potential tying run at third base. Ally Fleck earned the pitching win for Blessed Trinity by scattering six hits across seven innings. She issued no walks and struck out eleven. Rachael Lee (6 IP, 4R, 3ER, 10H, 1BB, 1K) suffered the pitching loss for the Colonels. Victoria Spencer and Katelin Lanier combined for five of the Titans ten hits. Haylee Dishmon had two hits and one RBI for Cass. Tatum followed with a hit and two RBIs. Alexis Woods, Eryn Lee, and Ansley Hight added one hit each. Blessed Trinity improved to 12-6 overall and 7-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (8-10, 5-8) hosts Darlington Thursday at 5 p.m. and Allatoona Saturday at 11 a.m. in non-region games. The Colonels will close out their region slate Thursday, October 7 with a doubleheader at Hiram.

The Cartersville volleyball team swept a pair of region matches at Hiram Tuesday night defeating the host Hornets 25-17, 25-5 and Cass 25-19, 25-8. In the win over Hiram, Lily Gochee had 17 assists while Mason Cline, London Moultrie, Ailee England, and Tennessee Abernathy combined for 17 kills. Gochee compiled 23 assists against Cass as Moultrie contributed eight kills and Abernathy totaled seven. Cline and England had five kills each. Cartersville (19-9, 3-2 Region 7-5A) plays a non-region match at Etowah Thursday at 6 p.m.
