The Woodland girls soccer team lost a non-region game at Heritage-Catoosa Monday night, 3-1. The Lady Generals opened the scoring in the 14th minute and added a second goal before the intermission to lead 2-0 at halftime. Heritage added to their lead with a goal in the second half, but Woodland’s Hayley Gilbert scored with 2:27 remaining in the game to help the Lady Cats avoid the shutout. Khloe Ravish and Abbi Duncan shared duties in net for Woodland and both made multiple saves. The Lady Cats (4-8-1) return to the pitch Tuesday at South Paulding for a 5:30 start.

The Cartersville High boys golf team placed fifth overall of 16 teams Saturday at the Georgia-South Carolina Cup played at Currahee Club in Toccoa, GA. Cartersville senior Buck Brumlow shot even par (72-72-- 144), tied for ninth individually, and made the All-Tournament team. Camden Meadows (77-73--150) tied for 26th and Blane Davis (77-79-- 156) tied for 44th in the 95-player field. Westminster won the team title with a 2-over-par 578 total. Other Georgia teams that followed included Johns Creek at 14-over-par and St. Pius at 20-over-par. Behind Cartersville fifth place finish included Georgia schools North Oconee (8th), Carrollton (11th), and South Forsyth (13th place).

The Cartersville boys placed first and the Lady Canes were runner-up in the nine-team Rockmart Invitational Friday night. Participating teams included the hosts Rockmart, Central-Carroll, Paulding County, Villa Rica, Bremen, Haralson County, Sonoraville, and Bowdon. The Woodland girls placed eighth and the boys were tenth Saturday at the 13-team Rome Relays held at Barron Stadium. Carrollton, who scored 123.5 points in the girls events and 176 on the boys side won both titles. The Etowah (88.5) and Grady (71.5) girls finished second and third. The North Atlanta (91.5) and East Paulding (69.75) boys placed second and third. Braden Powell produced a bases loaded, walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday to help lift Adairsville to a 5-4 win over visiting Murray County in Region 6-AAA action. Adairsville led 2-1 through four innings and regained the lead at 4-3 in the sixth. Murray County scored a run in the top of the seventh to tie the score 4-4, but the Tigers escaped with their win in the bottom of the eighth. Evan Sanders picked up the pitching win for Adairsville in relief of starter Jack Whitley. Sanders worked the final three innings allowing only one earned run on three hits and a walk. He struck out six. Whitley scattered three hits across the first five innings and did not walk a batter. None of the three runs against Whitley were earned. He fanned three. Logan Hunt had two hits and two RBIs for the Tigers. Elijah Padgett, Kyler Smith, and Sanders (RBI) each contributed a double. Tyler Driggers added a hit and one RBI. The loss dropped Murray County to 5-9 overall and 1-5 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (7-7, 2-2) plays at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. and will host the Warriors Thursday.

The Cartersville gymnastics team lost Wednesday at Pace Academy 102-54. Freshman Karley Garrison placed second all around with a total score of 32.1. Annaston Wilson placed third in vault with a score of 8.1. Garrison was third in both bars and floor exercise with scores of 7.9 and 8.5, respectfully. Garrison’s floor score was her second at 8.5 or greater, qualifying her for post-season competition at the State Preliminary Qualifier in Buford April 22.

Georgia Highlands College split a conference baseball doubleheader with Gordon State Saturday in games played at LakePoint in Emerson. The Chargers won the opener 10-0, but dropped the second game 10-3 to the Highlanders. GHC ace Johnny Dow pitched a complete game and struck out eight in the shutout. He scattered eight hits in seven innings of work. Georgia Highlands took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on David Smith’s two-RBI single. The Chargers then added four more runs in the third on four singles and three walks. Palmer Sapp and Trenton Parker both had two-run hits. Max Kops smacked a three-run home run in the fifth inning to make the score 9-0 and Brandon Prince followed with a solo shot for the Chargers’ final run. Gordon State led 3-1 through four innings of the second game. The Highlanders later led 6-2 through seven, and made it 10-2 in the eighth on their way to a seven-run win. Chargers’ starting pitcher Jacob Ryan suffered the pitching loss. He allowed four earned runs on 10 hits and a walk. Ryan fanned three. Four other GHC pitchers — Garrett Sagro, Chandler Wood, Matthew Silka, and Caleb Garner — worked short stints in relief for the Chargers. Connor Todaro had three hits for Georgia Highlands. Palmer Sapp and Ben Olson both added two hits and both homered. Brandon Prince drove in a run and finished with two hits. David Smith and Trace Twardoski both added one hit. Gordon State moves to 15-12 on the season and 6-4 in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association play. Georgia Highlands (28-4, 7-1) has another conference doubleheader Tuesday against Andrew College at LakePoint.

The 3rd-ranked Cartersville Purple Hurricanes took both games of a doubleheader Saturday at Woodland and completed a three-game, Region 7-AAAAA series sweep of the Wildcats. Cartersville, who won Tuesday’s first game in the series 6-0, won Saturday by scores of 5-0 and 6-2. Cartersville pitcher Phillip Schiltz tossed a gem and Jake Brasfield drove in all five runs in the first game. Schiltz went all seven innings on the mound, allowing no runs on four hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out seven. Brasfield, who went 3-for-3 at the plate, drove in runs on a sacrifice fly in the first, a single in the third, a double in the fifth, and another single in the seventh inning. Peyton Posey pitched all seven innings for Woodland. The Wildcats’ hurler gave up five runs — four earned — on 12 hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Posey also went 2-for-2 at the plate. Julian Wright and Trevor Montgomery had the only other Woodland base hits. Curt Bonner, Parker McPherson, and Blake Sutton all had two hits each for the Hurricanes. Hank Smith, Elliott Eastin, and Sam Melton added one hit apiece for Cartersville. In the second game of Saturday’s twin bill, Cartersville took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, led 4-2 through three frames, and added two more insurance runs in the fourth on the way to a 6-2 victory. Mason McBee started on the mound and nabbed the pitching victory for the Canes. McBee went 3 and 1/3 innings allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out seven. Colt McKibben entered with the bases loaded in the fourth inning and got out of a one-out jam. The southpaw pitched through the sixth inning allowing no runs on just two hits. Davis Williams struck out two of three batters faced while closing out the seventh for the Purple Hurricanes. Woodland starter, Carter Heath, was tagged with the pitching loss. He went four innings allowing six runs — four earned — on seven hits and four walks. Heath struck out eight. Scotty Smith worked three innings of relief for the Wildcats. He allowed no runs on one hit and one walk, striking out three. Jacob Gravett hit a solo home run for Woodland in the second inning that narrowed Cartersville’s lead to 2-1 at the time. Chase Carson had a double. Peyton Posey drove in a run with one hit. Chase Carson, Heath, Drew Billings, and Ayden Ray added one hit each for the Wildcats. Parker McPherson had two hits including a double and two RBIs for the Canes. Jake Brasfield totaled two hits including a double and one RBI. Williams finished with two hits. Hank Smith tripled home a run in the first inning to start Cartersville’s scoring and Tyler Williamson contributed one hit and one RBI. With the doubleheader loss, Woodland is now 5-13 overall and 1-8 in region play. The Wildcats are scheduled for a three-game region series against Hiram starting Tuesday with a single game at Woodland. Woodland then travels to Hiram Friday for a doubleheader. Cartersville improves to 13-5 overall and 8-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Canes play a three-game region series next week against 2nd-ranked Blessed Trinity with Cartersville hosting a single game Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. and the Titans hosting a doubleheader in Roswell Thursday starting at 5 p.m.
