Youth football updates from the Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department and the Bartow County Parks and Recreation Department October 19 12U at Calhoun Recreation CARTERSVILLE HURRICANES (Ezell) 1, CALHOUN COLTS 0 After the two teams battled to a scoreless tie, Hurricanes (Ezell) won the game in overtime on penetration. Asa Mitcham had the one-yard carry that secured the win. Preston Sorrels rushed for 86 yards. Rhys Neal and Sorrells were the top defenders for Hurricanes (Ezell). Miles Mays had an interception and a fumble recovery for Calhoun. Chapel Parr also had a fumble recovery. 8U at Cass High School / Cochran Stadium CASS COLONELS BLUE 22, CASS COLONELS GOLD 12 William Nachtsheim rushed for 162 yards including touchdown runs of 70, 58, and 21 yards. He added a two-point PAT run. Jaylen Thompson added a two-point PAT run for Colonels Blue. Nachtshiem and Caleb Johnson had eight tackles each for the Colonels Blue defense. Thompson had a pair of tackles and recovered a fumble. Rob Castle had 86 rushing yards for Colonels Gold and scored on touchdown runs of 18 and 11 yards. Walker Harris, who led the Colonels Gold defense with five tackles, contributed 24 rushing yards. Ezra Banks and Zane Waits added three tackles each. 10U at Cass High School / Cochran Stadium CASS COLONELS GOLD 13, WOODLAND WILDCATS 6 Channings Briggs rushed for 55 total yards and had a 52 yard touchdown run for Colonels Gold. Kasey Jacobs scored on a 43 yard run. Austin Hensley added a one-point PAT run. Nicholas Robinson led the Colonels Gold defense with four stops. Thomas Duncan had two tackles and one interception. Jake Johnson also had two tackles and recovered a fumble for Cass Gold. Woodland scored on a 36 yard run by Connor Corbin. He finished with 50 rushing yards. Jahkoree Gainor contributed 42 yards rushing. Brantley Parker finished with eight tackles for the Wildcats. Jake Prince and Brenlee Smith finished with four and three tackles, respectively. CASS COLONELS BLUE 25, CASS COLONELS SILVER 6 Jacobian Sturgis scored two touchdowns for Colonels Blue on runs of 40 and 29. He finished with 75 yards rushing. Giovanni Banks had 91 yards rushing and a 14 yard touchdown run. Walker Cuprowski scored on a 12 yard run and Hayden Pinyan added a one-point PAT run for Colonels Blue. On defense, Demontre Cochran finished with four tackles. Cuprowski had three tackles and recovered a fumble. Lukas Blackwell also added three tackles and one interception. Colonels Silver scored on a 27 yard run by Connor Harstook. Jermiah Sturdivant, who led the defense with five tackles, finished with 67 rushing yards on offense. Hayden Oliver and Devin Ware had three tackles each. 12U at Cass High School / Cochran Stadium CASS COLONELS 46, CALHOUN HURRICANES 6 Cayden Aleman had 88 yards rushing for Cass including touchdown runs of 60 and nine yards. Paul Lanier had a 37 yard touchdown run. Joseph Thorne had a 12 yard touchdown run, and Shawn Wiseman added a five-yard touchdown run. On defense, Aleman had a 90-yard fumble recovery touchdown and three tackles. Levi Renfro and Zeke Helton both contributed three tackles and a fumble recovery each. October 21 12U at Cunningham Stadium / Grassdale Rd. WOODLAND WILDCATS 18, CARTERSVILLE HURRICANES (Ezell) 8 Tre’Shaun Winters rushed for 125 yards with touchdown runs of 47 and five yards for the Wildcats. Gavin Johnson contributed 107 yards rushing including a 63 yard touchdown run in the win. The local high school football games for this Friday include two teams battling for GHSA state playoff berths. Cartersville hosts Chapel Hill at Weinman Stadium as the Hurricanes look to continue their region and regular season win streaks as well as vie for an eighth consecutive region title. Adairsville travels to Chatsworth to take on the Murray County Indians and keep their state playoff hopes alive. Meanwhile, Cass and Woodland both seek region foes and look to end current losing streaks. CHAPEL HILL PANTHERS (4-3, 1-2) at CARTERSVILLE HURRICANES (8-0, 4-0) The Class AAAA top-ranked Purple Hurricanes took a huge step toward an eighth consecutive region title last Friday with a 52-42 win over 4th-ranked Sandy Creek. Cartersville has now won 77 of its last 78 regular season games. The last regular season loss for the Canes was a non-region setback at North Cobb on Sept. 5, 2014. In region play, the streak dates back to an 18-10 loss to Cedartown on Oct. 21, 2011. Tee Webb was 18-for-26 for 223 yards with three touchdowns against the Patriots. Evan Slocum filled in at running back and finished with 111 yards rushing on 20 attempts with two touchdowns. Harrison Allen added 72 yards on 12 carries with two scores. Canes’ receiver Sam Phillips had 11 receptions for 177 yards and two touchdowns. The back-and-forth contest in the first half actually saw the Canes build a 24-point lead in the second half after the game was tied 28-28 in the second quarter. Sandy Creek stormed back in the fourth quarter to threaten late, but the Canes held on. Sandy Creek quarterback Matt Williams was 24-of-41 passing for 461 yards and three touchdowns. The Hurricanes still have some regular season business ahead. Chapel Hill arrives at Weinman Stadium Friday night fresh off a 35-27 home win over Central-Carroll. Central played Cartersville to a two-point game on October 4. After a bye week, Cartersville then has to travel to LaGrange to play Troup who has only one region loss heading into the Tigers’ showdown at Cedartown this week. In addition to last week’s win over Central-Carroll, Chapel Hill has non-region wins this season over Newnan (31-10), Starr’s Mill (28-21), and Whitewater (29-8). The Panthers’ two region losses were to Troup (21-14) and Sandy Creek (45-24). Chapel Hill head coach Justin DeShon is in his sixth season as the top man for the Panthers. His teams have gone 23-35-1 since 2014 and have qualified for the state playoffs twice — in 2016 and 2017. Cartersville leads the all-time series with Chapel Hill 3-0 including back-to-back shutouts the last two seasons. The Canes won 51-0 last year in Douglasville and 62-0 in 2017 in the only meeting ever in Weinman Stadium. Cartersville won at Chapel Hill in 2016, 48-7. KELL LONGHORNS (5-2, 3-2) at CASS COLONELS (3-5, 2-4) The Class AAAAA sixth-ranked Kell Longhorns make their way to Cochran Stadium at Cass this Friday night for a Region 7-AAAAA matchup. Kell will be looking to bounce back from last week’s 34-14 home loss to 2nd-ranked Carrollton. The Longhorns only other loss this season was at 7th-ranked Rome. Kell has non-region wins over Mays and Lassiter along with region victories over East Paulding (45-0), Paulding County (41-16), and Villa Rica (39-9). Longhorns’ head coach Brett Sloan is in his third season in the top spot at Kell where his teams are 19-11 and have made the Class AAAAA state playoffs each year. Cass will attempt to snap a four-game losing streak after winning three consecutive games in September. The Colonels have dropped region games to Rome, Carrollton, Hiram, and East Paulding in recent weeks. They won games over Forsyth Central, Woodland, and Villa Rica in September after dropping their season opener to Adairsville. The all-time series includes only the past three season while the two schools have been assigned to the same region. Kell won 63-3 last year in Cobb County, 28-10 in 2017 also at Kell, and 39-7 in 2016 at Cass. Projections: CalPreps — Kell by 32 Massey — Kell by 32 Maxwell — Kell by 31 ADAIRSVILLE TIGERS (3-5, 2-4) at MURRAY CO. INDIANS (4-4, 2-4) Although the Tigers dropped a 28-7 decision last week to visiting Sonoraville, Adairsville remains in contention for a state playoff berth. Scenarios still exist for Adairsville to win both of the remaining regular season games over Murray County and Ringgold and reach the playoffs as the No. 4 seed from Region 6-AAA. In order for that to happen, Sonoraville would have to stumble this week against LFO and fall to North Murray in the final week. Another route for Adairsville is to earn the Class AAA At-Large berth as Region 6-AAA’s fifth place team. Since Region 1-AAA only has four teams, the fourth place team in that region must have a better GHSA power ranking than all the fifth place teams across the state in Class AAA. At the time of this report, Worth County is fourth in 1-AAA with a power ranking of 7.76. Fifth place teams in six of the other seven regions hold a better power ranking with Cherokee Bluff (9.75) and Adairsville (9.67) leading the way. Cherokee Bluff has the top two teams in Region 7-AAA remaining on its schedule — Greater Atlanta Christian and Dawson County. Should the Bears fall in either of those games and Adairsville win-out, the Tigers would easily surpass the Cherokee Bluff in the power rankings. The Class AAA at-large qualifier will travel in the opening round to play the Region 3-AAA champion. Benedictine and Jenkins are currently sitting at the top of that league’s standings with three weeks remaining in the regular season schedule. Benedictine is a traditional power in the Savannah-area region, but it is Jenkins in the top ten currently ranked No. 9 by the AJC. Murray County lost to visiting Calhoun last week 35-0, but has Region 6-AAA wins this season over Coahulla Creek (27-7) and Ringgold (17-16). The Indians other region losses were to LFO (14-7), Sonoraville (34-3), and North Murray (42-16). Murray defeated Armuchee and Southeast Whitfield in non-region games. In his seventh season at the helm, Murray County head coach Chad Brewer is 20-48 with the Indians. Murray County teams have not made the state playoffs since 2005 under Bill Napier. This will be the twelfth all-time meeting between the two schools dating back to 1976. Adairsville leads the series 7-3-1 with the Tigers winning each of the last five encounters. The last Murray County win was in 1993. The tie was 13-13 in 1992. Projections: CalPreps — Adairsville by 11 Massey — Adairsville by 10 Maxwell — Adairsville by 10 VILLA RICA WILDCATS (1-6, 0-5) at WOODLAND WILDCATS (1-6, 0-5) The only two teams in Region 7-AAAAA not to pick up a region victory this season square off Friday night at Woodland. Both teams — Villa Rica and Woodland — won their respective season openers, but have since dropped six straight. Villa Rica beat Campbell 44-7 on opening night while Woodland beat Southeast Whitfield 35-7. Both teams have struggled to put points on the scoreboard in region games. Villa Rica has averaged just 11.8 ppg in region action and only 7 ppg outside of 31 points scored in a 42-31 loss to Paulding County. Woodland has averaged only 5.6 ppg in region games and that includes 21 points in a 44-21 loss at Paulding County. The local Wildcats have also been shutout in three straight losses to Hiram, Rome, and Carrollton. Head coach Christian Hunnicutt is in his first season at Villa Rica after two seasons as the leader at Grayson and East Jackson. Hunnicutt, whose teams are 25-17 over four seasons, was 20-5 at Grayson where they won a region championship in 2018. He was 4-6 at East Jackson in 2016. Trevin Moore was identified as the top defensive player for Hurricanes (Canty). 10U at Dellinger Park CARTERSVILLE HURRICANES (Nunn) 22, CASS COLONELS BLUE 8 Tyon Coe scored on a pair of second quarter touchdown runs from 24 and 12 yards out for Hurricanes (Nunn). Coe also added a PAT run. Kaleb Holton had a PAT kick and Jaylon Watkins scored on an 18 yard run. Sam Bailey and Jaylon Watkins were the Hurricanes (Nunn) top defenders. Demontre Cochran, who also had two fumble recoveries on defense, had a 22-yard touchdown run for Colonels Blue. October 19 at Cunningham Stadium, Old Cass High School 12U BARTOW COUNTY PANTHERS 26, ROME WOLVES 12 Playing in wet conditions, the 12U Bartow County Panthers stayed unbeaten on the season with a 14-point win over the visiting Rome Wolves. The win landed the Panthers in the D1 Nation Georgia 12U rankings as the No. 10 team in the state. ​​ Isaiah Livsey rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries to pace the Panthers’ offense. Jacob Ellis finished with 58 yards on five carries and scored one touchdown and quarterback Brodie McWhorter rushed seven times for 15 yards and a score. “I was proud of the boys for the way they handled the elements,” said 12U Panthers coach Josh McWhorter. “The offensive line did a fantastic job and our backs — especially Isaiah Livsey — did a nice job of making their cuts in the holes. Bartow tied the game in the second half 6-6 on a 25-yard touchdown run by Grayson Warmack, but Rome broke free on a 40-yard touchdown run with 0:01 remaining in the game. Demarcus Ballenger was credited with a strong defensive effort for Bartow. Tremon Buckner had a fumble recovery. Rome improved to 6-0 in league action with their win. The 10U Bartow County Panthers (5-1) play at the Winston Knights Saturday at 2 p.m. 9U BARTOW COUNTY PANTHERS 6, ROME WOLVES 0 On a rain-soaked day, the 9U Bartow County Panthers knocked off the two-time defending Superbowl champion Rome Wolves Saturday, 6-0. The only points of the game came in the second quarter. Tough runs by Cooper Melvin and Kaiden Kent moved the Panthers to the 10-yard line where a Trace Hawkins run finished the drive. “The defense played lights out,” said 9U Panthers coach Quintin Kent. “We gave up less than 50 yards and limited the Wolves to only three first downs.” ​​ Rome’s final effort to tie the game was stopped on a fourth-and-twelve play with one minute remaining. The Wolves quarterback was stopped just inches short of a first down on a tackle by Kent to force a turnover on downs. NFL VIC BEASLEY — Atlanta Falcons (5th yr. pro; OLB/DE; Clemson; Adairsville HS)… amid trade rumors from multiple sources, Beasley had two tackles Sunday in the Falcons’ 37-10 home loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Atlanta, now 1-6 on the season, has lost five straight. Beasley was a first-round pick by the Falcons in 2015 and led the NFL with 15.5 sacks in 2016, but his production has steadily declined and he has only 1.5 sacks this season. Atlanta is last in the NFL in sacks with five. The Falcons picked up Beasley’s fifth-year option at $12.81 million for this season but made it clear he would have to earn an extension. Childers accounted for all three of the Huskies’ touchdowns and had NIU up 17-14 late in the third quarter before falling to Miami-Ohio 27-24. Childers scored on short runs in the second and third quarters and completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Cole Tucker to cap a 75-yard drive in the fourth quarter. VOLLEYBALL NEDU EVANS — Augusta University (Fr., MH, Cartersville HS)… saw action in all three matches for the Jaguars last week as Augusta defeated Queens (NC) University at home, but lost at Lander University and at USC-Aiken. Evans saw action in five of thirteen sets in the three matches. In the three matches, she totaled five kills, two digs, and four blocks. Augusta (16-6, 1-2 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Georgia College Tuesday night, UNC-Pembroke Saturday, and Francis Marion University Sunday. GRACE HUNTER — Brewton Parker College (Fr., Cartersville HS)… matched her career high with 13 kills Friday in a four set, home loss to Faulkner (Alabama) University. She also had five kills in a three set loss Saturday to visiting Martin Methodist University. SWIMMING JORDAN BALDWIN — Life University (So., Woodland HS)… placed fourth in the 50-yard backstroke, third in the 50-yard freestyle, and third in the 100-yard backstroke October 12 as Life dropped a dual meet with visiting Sewanee-University of the South 136-96. Sunday, Life dropped a narrow 117-116 result to visiting Campbellsville. In that meet, Baldwin was part of a 400-yard free relay team that finished third. Individually, he was fourth in the 200-yard backstroke, fifth in the 100-yard backstroke and seventh in the 50-yard free. Next for LIfe is a Mid-South Conference meet at Lindsey Wilson (KY) College this Saturday. RYLEE MOSS — Old Dominion University (Fr., Adairsville HS)… swam the third leg of the Monarchs’ 200-yard medley relay that placed second September 27 at home against East Carolina. In the same meet, she was fourth in the 200-yard butterfly, third in the 200-yard backstroke, and fourth in the 200-yard individual medley as East Carolina won 188-107. October 12, the Monarchs lost to UNC-Wilmington 169.5-130.5. Moss was part of the first place 400-yard medley relay team; won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:08.82; was runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly in 59.10; and finished third in the 400-yard individual medley. ODU competes along with Gardner-Webb University this Saturday in a tri-meet at Campbell University. ELIJAH WILHOIT — Life University (Fr., Cass HS)… placed second in the 200-yard freestyle, fourth in the 100-yard freestyle, and third in the 50-yard butterfly during a home loss to Sewanee-University of the South October 12. Along with the third-place showing in the 400-yard free relay, he finished fourth in the 100-yard freestyle, fourth in the 50-yard butterfly and sixth in the 100-yard butterfly in the loss to Campbellsville. SOCCER EMILY COLLUM — Georgia Southwestern State University (So., F, Adairsville HS)… was a starter Sunday, took one shot, and played 58 minutes in a 1-0 overtime loss to Young Harris College. She also played 24 minutes off the bench for the Hurricanes last Wednesday night in a 2-0 home loss to Emmanuel College. Georgia Southwestern (3-9-1, 0-6 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Flagler College Wednesday night and travels to UNC-Pembroke Saturday. HAVYN ISAAC — Georgia Military College (Fr., GK, Adairsville HS)… had three saves and a complete game shutout last Thursday in a 1-0 home victory over Oxford College of Emory University. Isaac also stopped three of four shots, but the Bulldogs lost 1-0 last Tuesday at Gordon State CC. GMC finished the regular season 8-6-1 overall and 7-4-1 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. KURT MOORE — Birmingham Southern College (Sr., GK, Euharlee, Darlington HS)… made 11 saves Friday night in a 5-0 conference loss to Centre College (KY). He was also credited with nine saves Sunday afternoon in a 4-0 home loss to Sewanee-University of the South. The Panthers play this Saturday afternoon at Millsaps College (MS). The Southern Athletic Association Tournament begins November 2. MARISSA MOWRY — Anderson University (So., MF, Cartersville HS)… played all 90 minutes of a 3-1 home victory over Lincoln Memorial University Saturday and saw 45 minutes of action last Wednesday in a 3-0 loss to visiting University of North Georgia. The Trojans (6-5, 4-3 South Atlantic Conference) travel to Erskine College (SC) Wednesday night and Lenoir Rhyne University Saturday night. PUTZER, MADISON — Young Harris College (Jr., MF, Cartersville HS)… the midfielder saw 20 minutes of action off the bench for the Mountain Lions Sunday in a 1-0 double-overtime win in Americus at Georgia Southwestern. Putzer entered in the 74th minute and was on the field four minutes into the first overtime period. PUTZER, PAYTON — Young Harris College (Jr., MF, Cartersville HS)… started, played 91 minutes, and took two shots Sunday in a 1-0 double-overtime win at Georgia Southwestern. Her shot in the 22nd minute was on goal, but stopped. YHC (5-6, 4-2 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Georgia College Wednesday night and travels to USC-Aiken Saturday night. Both matchups are conference contests. ANTHONY ROBLEDO — Reinhardt University (So., MF, Cass HS)… saw 22 minutes of action in the second half off the bench last Tuesday in an 8-1 Eagles’ win over visiting Talladega College. He also played 22 minutes Saturday in an 8-1 home victory over Kentucky Christian University. Reinhardt (8-5-1, 6-2-1 Mid-South Conference) hosts Columbia International University Wednesday night and travels to Bluefield College (VA) Saturday afternoon.

The Cartersville High volleyball team won the first set of their best-of-five, opening round match in the Class AAAA state tournament Saturday in Augusta but ultimately fell to White County with losses in the next three sets. Cartersville won a back-and-forth opening set after trailing 12-8 in the early going. The Lady Canes made a nice run to finish off the set and won 25-20. In the second set, Cartersville trailed 21-12 before battling back. Unfortunately, the Hurricanes came up just short and lost the set 25-23. White County again took an early lead in the third set to defeat Cartersville 25-11 and put the Lady Canes' backs to the wall heading into the fourth set. Although the Lady Canes battled tough in the fourth set, they came up short again in a 25-20 loss. “We played better than the scores indicate,” said Cartersville head coach Dutch Cothran. “We got down on ourselves at times, but the girls battled back from several deficits. We played well as a unit in that final set, but just seemed to lose all those wild, scrambling points. We fought hard, and I’m looking forward to watching the growth of our young players in the future.” Cartersville finished the season 20-15 and was the runner-up in Region 5-AAAA. ADAIRSVILLE VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN STRAIGHT SETS The Adairsville High volleyball team lost its Class AAA state playoff first round match at North Hall. The hosting and top-seeded Lady Trojans won 25-12, 25-11, and 25-12 and will host a Sweet Sixteen match for the seventh straight season Tuesday night.

Cartersville quarterback Tee Webb threw for three touchdowns while Evan Slocum and Harrison Allen ran for two scores each as the Purple Hurricanes held off a second half challenge from the Sandy Creek Patriots for a 52-42 Region 5-AAAA win. The two teams traded scores in the first half before Cartersville posted the final ten points of the half for a 38-28 lead at halftime. Sandy Creek’s Rashad Amos, who rushed for over 100 yards in the loss, had touchdown runs of five and 50 yards in the first quarter as the Patriots took leads of 7-0 and 21-14. Quarterback Matt Williams, who threw for over 450 yards in the game, connected on touchdown passes to Amos from 69 yards and Ahmad Jackson from 43 yards out. The pass to Amos gave Sandy Creek a 14-7 lead in the first quarter. The connection with Jackson tied the game 28-28 with 7:43 left in the first half. Meanwhile, the Canes’ offense was lighting up the scoreboard too. Webb connected with Sam Phillips (photo) for a 26-yard touchdown pass with 9:02 to go in the first quarter to match the Patriots’ opening score. The senior quarterback also found Devonte Ross for a 43-yard touchdown and Phillips again for a 71-yard screen pass touchdown in the second quarter. The connection with Ross gave the Hurricanes their first lead of the night at 28-21 with 9:55 remaining in the first half. The screen pass touchdown put Cartersville up 35-28 with 6:29 left in the half. Slocum had scoring runs from three yards and 15 yards in the first quarter to tie the score at 14-14 and 21-21. Oscar Hernandez, who made each of his PAT kicks, converted a 35-yard field goal in the final minute of the first half to give Cartersville a ten point lead at the intermission. Cartersville controlled much of the third quarter and built a 52-28 lead. Both scoring drives were capped by short runs by Harrison Allen. The Patriots, down by 24 points heading into the fourth quarter, did not go away. Williams scored on a seven-yard touchdown run and his two-point coversion pass to Brian Branch made the score 52-36 with 11:01 remaining in the game. He then connected with Miles Thornton for 21 yards and a touchdown with 8:15 remaining but the two-point pass play failed leaving the Patriots ten points down. Sandy Creek had one final possession in plus-territory following a Cartersville punt, but turned the possession over on downs at the Canes’ 22-yard line. Webb finished the game 18-of-26 for 223 yards with three passing touchdowns. Slocum had 111 yards rushing on 20 attempts and two touchdowns. Allen finished with 12 carries for 72 yards and two scores. Phillips finished with 11 receptions totaling 177 yards and two touchdowns. Ross caught three passes for 70 yards and a score. Cartersville has now won 77 of their last 78 regular season games and are in solid position to with an eighth consecutive region title. The last regular season loss for the Canes was a 27-26 defeat to North Cobb on Sept. 5, 2014. In region play, the streak dates further back. The last region loss was 18-10 to Cedartown on Oct. 21, 2011. Sandy Creek (6-1, 2-1) hosts LaGrange next Friday. The victory gives Cartersville (8-0, 4-0) an inside track toward another region championship. The Canes will host Chapel Hill (4-3, 1-2) and travel to Troup County (5-2, 2-1) to close out the regular season. SONORAVILLE 28, ADAIRSVILLE 7 Blade Bryant ran for two touchdowns and caught two touchdown passes as Sonoraville topped Adairsville Friday night at Tigers’ Stadium, 28-7. Bryant had an eight-yard touchdown reception from Brady Lackey midway through the first quarter and scored on a five-yard run in the opening minute of the second quarter as the Phoenix took an early 14-0 lead. A long Adairsville pass play moved the ball inside the red zone later in the period and Tigers quarterback Conner Crunkleton scored on a one-yard, fourth down keeper that made the score 14-7 at halftime. Following a scoreless third quarter, Bryan scored on a seven-yard run with about nine minutes to go that put the Phoenix ahead 21-7 and caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Lackey with about two minutes remaining for the 28-7 final score. Sonoraville improved to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in Region 6-AAA. The Phoenix will host Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe next Friday. Adairsville (3-5, 2-4) travels to Murray County next Friday night. EAST PAULDING 42, CASS 7 East Paulding running back Rayne Chuma finished with four rushing touchdowns as the Raiders won their homecoming game over visiting Cass Friday night, 42-7. Chuma had a 36 yard dash in the final minute of the second quarter to cap off an 81-yard drive giving East Paulding a 14-0 lead at halftime. The only other scoring in the first half came on a 30-yard, pick-six by sophomore defensive back Jordan Harvey. He caught a deflection of a pass from Cass quarterback Logan Nelson and returned it for a touchdown midway through the second period. On the kickoff return to start the third quarter, Cass return man Tahj Dawson was stripped by K.J. Brown of the Raiders at the 26 yard line. Brown finished the play by returning the turnover for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead. On their ensuing possession, Cass drove 80 yards in four plays to make the score 21-7 but would get no closer. David Gbadie scored for the Colonels on a 57-yard run with 9:34 remaining in the third quarter and Kaleb Speights converted the PAT kick. From there, Chuma scored touchdowns on each of the Raiders next three possessions. Touchdown runs of 23, 23, and 46 yards made it a 42-7 lead and forced a mercy-rule, running clock in the fourth quarter. East Paulding improved to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Raiders travel to Paulding County Friday. Cass (3-5, 2-4) hosts Kell next Friday.

Xavier Ramsey, Jourdan Sims, and Gaines were noted as defensive standouts. 10U at Dellinger Park CARTERSVILLE HURRICANES (Nunn) 27, CASS COLONELS SILVER 0 Tyon Coe ran for three touchdowns that included TD runs of 28 yards and 17 yards in the first half. He also added one PAT run. Jaylon Watkins scored a second half touchdown on a 22 yard run and converted a PAT run. Timothy Coe added a PAT run for Hurricanes (Nunn). Tyson Coe forced a fumble on a kickoff and Bo Burson was selected as a top defender. October 15 10U at Woodland High School WOODLAND WILDCATS 6, CASS COLONELS 0 Dylan Colley scored the game’s only touchdown on an 18 yard run in the second quarter. Ayden Welch and Jahkhome Ganion led the Wildcats’ defense with five tackles each. Thomas Duncan was the leading rusher for the Colonels. Nicholas Robinson finished with seven tackles for Cass. 12U at Woodland High School CASS COLONELS 32, WOODLAND WILDCATS 0 Cayden Aleman had touchdown runs of 32 yards and one yard plus a 34 yard touchdown reception for the Colonels. Paul Lanier scored on a 63 yard touchdown run and was 3-for-3 passing for 74 yards and a touchdown. William Hayes had a fumble recovery for Cass. Cameron Johnson led Woodland in rushing. Malachi Harris had three tackles for the Wildcats. Competing this past weekend in Bleckley County, the Woodland Middle School cross country teams captured a pair of state titles and a pair of third place finishes. The Woodland Middle boys and JV boys won their races while the girls team and JV girls team placed third. The boys championship race featured 31 teams. Kain Tanturri (15th, 12:26) and Zachary Wiggins (18th, 12:31) paced the Wildcats in their championship run. Landan McSwain (12:55), Kaiden Pirkle (13:07), Heath Tatum (13:10), Andy Forsyth (13:20), and Rowan Lee (13:44) rounded out the Woodland boys in the championship race. Woodland's Michael Berry won the JV boys’ race with a time of 13:24. Cam Williams placed second with a time of 13:35. Every JV boy earned a medal: Noah Vincent (6th, 13:51), Austin Daves (8th, 13:52), Jacob McDaniel (10th, 14:01), Knox Koontz (12th, 14:05), Will Parker (16th, 14:17), Grayson Moore (18th, 14:20) and Gavin Hubbard (24th, 14:40). Olivia Berry (19th, 14:16) led the Woodland Middle girls in the championship girls race. Autumn Lottner (14:58), Megan Schultz (15:00), Miranda Pelow (15:02), Teagan Bollwerk (15:23), and Bailee Motes (15:47) followed for the Lady ‘Cats, who finished third of 27 teams. Libby Morgan (14th, 16:52) and Lily Hiott (15th, 16:54) led the Woodland Middle JV girls to a third-place finish. Katelyn Thayer and Trinity Bowley both finished in 16:58, followed by Kiera Pedigo (17:05), and Ka’Rynne McKenney (17:36).

The Woodland softball team had its season come to a close Wednesday night in Fayetteville with a second round, Class AAAAA playoff doubleheader loss at Whitewater. Whitewater won the opening game of the best-of-three series 4-1 and took the nightcap by an 8-2 final score. In the opener, Whitewater broke open a 1-1 game with four consecutive hits in the fifth inning, including a two-run home run. Earlier, Woodland had tied the contest 1-1 in the second inning on three consecutive hits by Kendyl Hardin, Morgan Cooper (double), and Kailey Baker (RBI). Bella Carnes and Allyssa Motes had the only other Woodland hits in Game 1. Lainey Baker (6 IP, 4ER, 11H, 1BB, 6K) suffered the pitching loss. In Game 2, Whitewater — also Wildcats — took a 7-0 lead through five and one-half innings. Woodland scored single runs in each of the final two frames. Cooper had an RBI double in the sixth and Morgan Bailey singled home Carnes in the seventh after she reached on a two-out triple. Cooper finished the second game with a pair of doubles. Lainey Baker (5 IP, 3ER, 6H, 2BB, 3K) again took the loss in the circle. Hope Schultz (2 IP, 5ER, 4H, 4BB, 1K) worked the final two innings in relief. The Lady Cats, who saw the playing careers of five seniors draw to a close, finished the season with a 21-12 record. The five Woodland seniors on the Woodland roster are Bella Carnes, Morgan Bailey, Allyssa Motes, Hope Schultz, and Brianna Hill. Whitewater, champions of Region 3-AAAAA, improved to 27-6 for the year and advance to the Final Eight double-elimination state tournament in Columbus October 24-26.

The local high school football games for this Friday include one of the state's most anticipated games of the year as Cartersville hosts Sandy Creek. Adairsville will entertain Sonoraville in a key region clash in 6-AAA that could ultimately decide a state playoff berth. Meanwhile, Cass will look to keep its slim playoff hopes alive with a trip to East Paulding. Woodland has a bye week. SANDY CREEK PATRIOTS (6-0, 2-0) at CARTERSVILLE HURRICANES (7-0, 3-0) A pair of unbeaten teams will square off Friday night at Weinman Stadium as Class 4A 2nd-ranked Cartersville hosts Class 4A 4th-ranked Sandy Creek. Cartersville routed LaGrange last week 45-2 behind 15-of-23 passing by quarterback Tee Webb for 296 yards and four touchdowns. Kyler Johnson caught six passes for 116 yards and two of the scores. Meanwhile, Sandy Creek utilized a 20-for-27 passing game by quarterback Matt Williams to beat Chapel Hill 45-24. Williams finished with 302 yards passing and two touchdowns. Rashad Amos rushed for 131 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries. Brian Branch hauled in six passes for 119 yards and Jaden Downey returned an interception for a Patriots’ touchdown. Sandy Creek has a playoff-storied program, but that history has not been as affluent in the series with Cartersville. Under the father-son tandem of head coaches Rodney Walker and Chip Walker, Sandy Creek won eight region titles between 2003 and 2013, including state championships in Class AAAA in 2009 and 2012 and a Class AAA title in 2010. Current Patriots head coach Brett Garvin is 18-9 in his third season as the top man at Sandy Creek. The Patriots were 5-5 and 7-4 in his first two seasons. This is his first head coaching job and he has Sandy Creek 6-0 for the first time since 2014. Friday will mark the seventh time Cartersville and Sandy Creek have squared off on the gridiron since the series started in 2006. The average win margin has been 20 points although a 63-0 win by the Canes in 2017 skews those results. Cartersville won 7-0 last year in Tyrone and also had a 35-31 playoff win over the Patriots in 2014 along with a 17-16 win at Sandy Creek in 2007. CASS COLONELS (3-4, 2-3) at EAST PAULDING RAIDERS (0-6, 0-4) The Colonels fell flat last week in their effort to stay atop the contenders for the final playoff spot in Region 7-AAAAA. The 31-0 setback at home to Hiram gives Cass three consecutive losses after the Colonels won three straight in September. In order to make the playoffs now, Cass likely needs to win their final three games and have Hiram drop their last four. That may sound incredibly unlikely, but the Hornets have Villa Rica, Rome, Kell, and Carrollton remaining on their schedule. Cass has Kell and Paulding County remaining after this week. Friday night Cass travels just down the road a piece to East Paulding to take on a winless Raiders team. This is not your typical 0-6 team, however. East Paulding lost a one-point game at Upson-Lee to start the year and fell to a 5-1 Class AAAAAAA North Paulding team in their other non-region game. In Region 7-AAAAA action, the Raiders have lost to the four teams currently at the top of the standings — Carrollton, Rome, Kell, and Hiram. Billy Shackleford is the veteran head coach at East Paulding. He had the Raiders in the state playoffs Sweet Sixteen last season and was 11-11 in his first two seasons at the school. Previously, Shackleford was 51-53 in 10 seasons at Sprayberry between 2007 and 2016. This will be the eighth all-time meeting between Cass and East Paulding on the gridiron. Cass won the first three matchups in 1998-2000. The Raiders won in 2001 and in 2016-2018 to lead the series 4-3. East Paulding won last year’s game at Cass, 33-21. They each lost to teams in strong contention for playoff spots in Region 6-AAA and this appears to be a head-to-head battle for the fourth and final playoff slot in the region. Sonoraville fell to Haralson County 32-20 last week while Adairsville dropped a 39-14 decision to Calhoun. With North Murray ahead of both Haralson County and Calhoun in the region standings, the final playoff spot will likely be determined by Friday’s winner. Following Friday’s showdown, Adairsville will have Murray County and Ringgold remaining on the schedule. Those two opponents are still looking for their first region win of the year. Sonoraville will have a much tougher schedule with LFO, Coahulla Creek, and North Murray remaining. This will be the 14th meeting between the Tigers and the Phoenix with Adairsville winning ten of the previous thirteen dating back to the 2006 season. Sonoraville has won two of the last three, however, including last season’s 14-10 win in Gordon County. The Phoenix also won 35-0 in 2016. The Tigers won the 2017 matchup at Sonoraville, 35-25. Sonoraville’s Denver Pate is 11-15 in his first head coaching job. The Phoenix have gone 4-6 in his first two seasons. Adairsville head coach Eric Bishop is 44-30 in his seventh season at the helm of the Tigers. Adairsville is looking to return to the state playoffs after missing last season. The Tigers made the playoffs in six of seven seasons between 2011 and 2017.
