Adairsville baseball led early, but dropped an 11-6 Region 6-AAA decision Tuesday night at home to the Bremen Blue Devils. The Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the visiting Blue Devils posted three runs in the fourth, five in the fifth, and three more in the sixth inning to take control with an 11-3 lead. Adairsville scored three more runs in the final two innings, but it would not be enough. Kyler Pelfrey singled to drive in the Tigers first run in the first inning. Caden Gibbs then blasted a two-run homer for Adairsville’s early 3-0 advantage. Hunter Hice hit a two-run homerun in the sixth inning and Noah Dutton — who finished with two hits — had an RBI single in the seventh to account for the Tigers’ other runs. Landon Ayers also contributed two hits in the game for the Tigers. Bremen (13-4, 6-1) took advantage of a bases loaded error that helped lead to their three-run fourth inning. Two more errors, along with a pair of singles and a three-run homer by Sam Thompson gave the Blue Devils a 7-3 lead in the fifth. Three more hits and a walk added three more Bremen runs in the sixth inning. Adairsville (11-6, 4-3) faces another region challenge Thursday at 5:55 p.m. as the Tigers host 10th-ranked Calhoun. They will then travel to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Friday.

With the bases loaded in a scoreless game Tuesday night, Cartersville centerfielder and nine-hole hitter Preston Welchel battled through a ten-pitch at bat in the bottom of the second inning. The junior fouled off multiple two-strike pitches before delivering a clutch three-run double that one-hopped the right field wall and got the Canes’ offense started in an eventual 10-0 win over Central-Carroll. Welchel finished the night 3-for-3 with four RBI as the Hurricanes won their seventh straight game and remained unbeaten in Region 5-AAAA. Josh Davis drove in a pair of runs, including a sacrifice fly and two hits. J.P. Martin added two hits and one RBI for the Canes who needed only five innings for their mercy-rule victory. Jake Gooch, Chandler Tromza, and Gage Morris had one hit each to bring the Cartersville hits total to ten. Gooch (4.1 IP, 0R, 2H, 2BB, 2K) also picked up the pitching victory by working into the fifth inning. Morris (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB) retired the final two outs with a short pop up to centerfield and a comeback groundout to work his way out of a bases loaded jam and preserve the shutout. The Canes played Tuesday's game without star players Anthony Seigler and Devin Warner. Both were suspended for two games after being ejected in Monday’s win at Cedartown for arguing with an umpire following a called third strike on Warner. The two players were allowed to complete Monday’s game, but sat out Tuesday and will have to miss Friday's game also. Central-Carroll drops to 10-9 with the loss and is now 2-4 in region play. Cartersville (17-5, 6-0) faces Sandy Creek Friday at home at 5:55 p.m.

The Woodland girls and boys tennis teams won Region 7-AAAAA matches over county rival Cass Tuesday evening with the Lady Cats winning 4-1 and the Wildcats winning all but one set in a 5-0 decision. The Cartersville girls soccer team earned its third straight win Monday night at the Cartersville Soccer Complex, defeating Southeast Whitfield in a non-region match 3-1. Micah Vance scored twice for the Lady Canes and Kalyn Donegan added the other goal as Cartersville played without senior starters Marissa Mowry and Merritt Vance. Claire Choate and Donegan had assists on Micah Vance’s two goals. The visiting Raiders’ lone goal came after Cartersville had taken a 3-0 lead. The Lady Canes (7-4, 3-1) play at Region 5-AAAA foe Cedartown Thursday night.

The Adairsville High School tennis teams swept visiting North Murray Monday to complete their 2018 region slates. The Tigers took a 3-0 decision to finish 4-5 in region play. The Lady Tigers defeated the Mountaineers 4-1 to complete their region schedule with a 5-4 mark. Georgia Highlands baseball posted nine runs through the first four innings Monday at LakePoint and made it hold up in a 9-7 GCAA conference win over visiting Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The Chargers pounded out 19 hits in the game with only two extra base hits — both doubles. Alex Holdbrooks (7 IP, 3R, 1ER, 7H, 3BB, 6K) earned the pitching win for Georgia Highlands with Cody Johnson (1 IP, 4R, 3ER, 2H, 4BB, 1K) and Travis Kuebler (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 2K) working in relief. Nick Piccapietra had four hits for the Chargers including a double and two RBI. Skylar McPhee and Parker Orr both finished with three hits and one RBI. Cameron Hearn and Brandon Allen had two hits and two RBI. Zach Miller drove in a run with two hits and Willis Kemp added two hits. ABAC slipped to 17-19 overall and 6-8 in conference play. Georgia Highlands (23-10, 9-5) continues conference games this week at West Georgia Tech Wednesday at 1 p.m. and the Chargers host Gordon State Friday night at 6 p.m. at LakePoint.

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes remained unbeaten in region play Monday night with a win over Cedartown, while Cass and Woodland dropped region contests. Cass lost a late lead at home to 3rd-ranked Carrollton and Woodland was edged at Rome by a single run. CARTERSVILLE 12, CEDARTOWN 6 Josh Davis and J.P. Martin combined for five hits and seven RBI as Cartersville won 12-6 Monday night in a Region 5-AAAA contest at Cedartown. Martin doubled and homered in three at bats. Davis had three hits including a double. The Hurricanes took a 2-0 lead in the second inning only to have the Bulldogs tie the game in the third inning. The Canes then scored ten runs over the final four innings to take a 12-2 lead. Cedartown scored four times in the bottom of the seventh, but fell short in their comeback. Cohen Wilbanks picked up the pitching win for Cartersville going the first three and one-third innings on the mound. He allowed two unearned runs on three hits while fanning six. Levi Ayers (2.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 3K), Martin (0.2 IP, 4R, 3ER, 3H, 2K), and Gage Morris (0.1 IP) also pitched. Cartersville out hit Cedartown eight to six. Jack Haney led the Bulldogs’ offense with a home run and a double for three RBI. Will Sanders also had a hit and one RBI. In addition to the offensive performances of Davis and Martin, Mason Barnett (RBI), Brant Smith (RBI), and Preston Welchel (RBI) had base hits for the Hurricanes. The loss drops Cedartown to an 8-10 overall mark and 2-4 in Region 5-AAAA. Cartersville (16-5, 5-0) hosts Central-Carroll Tuesday and Sandy Creek Friday. Both region games are set for 5:55 p.m. starts. CARROLLTON 5, CASS 3 The Cass Colonels lost a late lead Monday night to Class 5A third-ranked Carrollton and dropped the Region 7-AAAAA matchup, 5-3. The Colonels grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning and led 3-0 through five innings in support of starting pitcher Evan Hinton. Hinton allowed three unearned runs in six innings of work and settled for no decision while scattering five hits and four walks. He struck out seven. Wyatt Karlovich (1 IP, 2ER, 2H, 2BB, 1K) was labeled with the loss in the seventh. Jared Soliz (7 IP, 3R, 1ER, 4H, 2BB, 8K) tossed a complete game in earning the win for Carrollton. Destine Udombon led the Trojans with two hits including a double and two RBI. Chris Gaiter also had two hits for Carrollton. Steven Spell hit a solo home run for the Colonels in the second and finished with three RBI. Nathan Smith, Bryson Markley, and Matt Shook had the other Cass base hits. Carrollton improved to 17-3 overall and remained an unbeaten 7-0 in region action. Cass (9-10, 3-4) travels to Carrollton Wednesday at 5:55 p.m. and hosts Rome on Friday at 5:55 p.m. ROME 7, WOODLAND 6 Both teams started fast, but it was Rome that edged Woodland 7-6 in a Region 7-AAAAA game Monday night behind the Levee in Rome. Woodland took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Rome answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning and added two more in the third to take a 6-5 lead. Woodland tied the game in the top of the fifth, but the Wolves’ Xavier Roberts hit a solo home run to take the lead for good in the bottom of the inning and Rome held off the Wildcats down the stretch. Roberts finished with three hits including a double to go with his homer and two RBI. Sevie Andrews (RBI) and Aldin Astin finished with two hits for the Wolves. Braden Hyde (5 IP, 6R, 0ER, 7H, 2BB, 4K) was Rome’s winning pitcher. Knox Kadum (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K) earned a two inning save. Ben Ammons (6 IP, 7ER, 10H, 0BB, 1K) went the distance, but was the losing pitcher for Woodland. Koby Stansel had three hits including a double and one RBI. Dylan Webb had two hits with a double and two RBI. Ammons drove in a run with a hit and Marco Haro added one hit. Rome improved to 9-7 overall and 4-1 in region action. Woodland (9-11, 2-3) hosts Rome Wednesday in the second game of the series at 5:55 p.m.

Georgia Highlands softball split a conference doubleheader Monday at East Georgia CC, winning the opener 5-3 but dropping Game 2 in extra innings, 4-3. The Chargers are 22-13 for the year and 10-4 in GCAA play. After one rotation of conference opponents, GHC is in second place. The Chargers are scheduled to play Thomas University JV Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader.

GOLF HANNAH MAE DEEMS — Mercer University (Sr., Taylorsville, GA, Darlington HS)… finished in a tie for 25th at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic over the weekend. She shot six-over par in the 54-hole event with scores of 81, 75 and 78. As a team, Mercer placed fifth of 12 teams. Host LSU won the tournament, followed by Houston, Virginia, and NC State. Former Cartersville High School baseball players Sam Howard and Connor Justus saw action again this past week with their respective major league teams in Spring training. Howard, assigned to start the year with the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes was 1-1 in Cactus League action this spring in six appearances. He recorded two holds in relief and had one start. He worked 12.1 innings, walked five and struck out 13 for a 5.11 ERA. Opponents hit .250 against Howard this spring. Albuquerque opens its Pacific Coast League schedule with a five-game series at Salt Lake on Thursday, April 5. CONNOR JUSTUS — Los Angeles Angels organization (3rd-year pro; SS; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS)… entered to play shortstop in the bottom of the seventh last Thursday but did not have an at-bat in the Angels 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Kentucky’s walk-off run in the 5-4 Auburn loss scored on a wild pitch. He also faced two batters Sunday in the third inning with Auburn trailing 3-0. He allowed a walk, a hit, and a pair of earned runs as the Tigers eventually lost 13-3 in the second game of a doubleheader. HARRISON OSBORN — Point University (Fr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… suffered his first pitching loss last Tuesday but tossed a complete game five-hitter as the NAIA 25th-ranked Skyhawks were edged by 14th-ranked University of Mobile (AL) 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader. Osborne walked one and struck out two in his seven innings of work. Point finished the week 2-3 by winning two of three over Truett-McConnell University over the weekend. HUNTER REAID — Shorter University (Fr., C, Woodland HS)… started at DH and batted second in the lineup last Wednesday in the Hawks’ 7-5 home, non-conference win over Emmanuel College. Shorter (12-16, 4-10) had a 3-1 week that included winning two of three Gulf South Conference games at 2nd-ranked Delta State. TRISTIN SMITH — Young Harris College (R-Jr., Inf., Adairsville HS)… had his best week of the 2018 season by hitting safely in four straight games — all starts — and going 6-for-12 with 11 RBI on three doubles, three homeruns with four walks and six runs scored. As a result, Smith was named Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week. Smith also stole a base and was hit by a pitch three times during the stretch. He raised his season batting average over 100 points to .294 as the Mountain Lions won at Truett-McConnell and swept a three-game conference series at home with 11th-ranked Flagler College. YHC (16-13, 10-8 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Emmanuel College Tuesday before traveling to Americus for a three-game conference series at Georgia Southwestern Friday and Saturday. TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (Sr., OF, Adairsville HS)… extended his hitting streak to seven straight games by going 6-for-17 in four games last week. He hit a solo homerun at Truett-McConnell and had one other RBI in the series opener with Flagler College. Washington walked twice and scored four runs last week as the Mountain Lions won four straight. The Georgia Highlands baseball team split a doubleheader at Gordon State CC Saturday to earn a four-game series split with the Highlanders. Gordon State won the opener 8-3, but the Chargers held off a late surge by their hosts in the second game to win 11-9 in Barnesville. Georgia Highlands took the series opening game Tuesday night at LakePoint, but lost Thursday in Barnesville, 9-4. In Game 1 Saturday, Gordon State took a 6-0 lead with a five-run fourth inning and limited the Chargers to only a three-run sixth. Adam Leverett (7 IP, 3ER, 6H, 0BB, 4K) tossed a complete game for the pitching win. Drew Wilson (3.1 IP, 6R, 4ER, 6H, 0BB, 2K) was saddled with the loss for the Chargers. Brian Davis led the Gordon bats with two hits that included a double and two RBI. Six other Highlanders had one hit each. Willis Kemp had two hits including a double for Georgia Highlands. Nick Piccapietra drove in two runs with a double. In Game 2 Saturday, the Chargers posted seven runs through the first four innings, but a four-run third and a single run in the fourth kept Gordon State within striking distance at 7-5. Georgia Highlands added four more runs in the top of the sixth and then held off the Highlanders in the bottom of the seventh despite allowing four runs for an 11-9 win. GHC starting pitcher Tyler Sellers (5 IP, 5ER, 7H, 2BB, 5K) picked up the win. The Georgia Highlands offense produced 14 hits, including five extra-base hits. Parker Orr went 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Zach Miller doubled twice in a 3-for-4 performance that included three RBI. Austin Foster contributed a pair of base hits. Georgia Highlands (22-10, 8-5) hosts Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Monday at 5 p.m. at LakePoint and travels to West Georgia Tech on Wednesday before hosting Gordon State again on Friday.
