Adairsville scored twice in their final frame and had the tying run on base, but the late rally fell short at Carrollton Monday night, 7-6. Although Adairsville took a first inning lead and scored in each of the first three innings, the Class 5A third-ranked Trojans answered with runs in each of the first four offensive frames. Carrollton (8-3) led 3-2 after one inning, 4-3 after two, and 7-4 through four innings. Starting pitcher Will Carney (3 IP, 4ER, 9H, 0BB, 3K) picked up the win for the Trojans with Ryan Anderson (1.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 3K) and Ty Murray (1 IP, 2R, 1ER, 1H, 1BB) closing out the game on the mound. Caden Gibbs (3 IP, 6ER, 10H, 0BB, 4K) was tagged with the pitching loss for Adairsville. Garrett Mishoe (3 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 4K) retired the final nine outs and kept the Tigers in the game. Ben Ammons tossed a four-hit, complete-game shutout and Woodland scored all six runs in the third inning as the Wildcats blanked visiting Rockmart Monday night, 6-0. Ammons struck out nine and did not issue a walk in his stellar performance. Bailey Ward had three hits including a double and one RBI to lead the Woodland offense. Toby Queen had two hits including a double and one RBI. Koby Stansel contributed a pair of RBI with one hit. Garrett Cornett, Tyler Dilcher, Chris Mills, and Dylan Webb added one hit apiece. The loss dropped Rockmart to a 3-5 record for the year. Woodland (6-4) plays at Sonoraville Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The Wildcats then travel to Adairsville on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Cass pitchers Logan Nelson, Wyatt Karlovich, and Nic Wallin combined Monday night for a two-hit shutout of visiting Murray County Indians as the Colonels won the non-region matchup, 3-0. Nelson (4 IP, 0H, 1BB, 5K) picked up the pitching win. Karlovich (1H, 2K) entered in the fifth inning and Wallin (1 IP, 1H, 1K) earned the save. The Colonels scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and added an insurance run in the sixth. Clay Means and Evan Hinton drove in the first inning runs. Gavin Young singled home the Colonels’ sixth inning run. Nathan Smith had two of the Colonels’ six hits. Bryson Markley, Steven Spell, Hinton, and Means (double) had the other hits. Cass (5-5) travels to North Murray Wednesday, Murray County Thursday, and Sonoraville Friday. All three non-region games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Former Cartersville Hurricanes’ basketball standout A.J. Mosby was named to the Southwestern Athletic Conference All-Conference Second Team this week and former Cane Ryan Davis will help lead his team in the NCAA D-II Southeast Regional this week. BASKETBALL RYAN DAVIS — Francis Marion University (Jr., G, Cartersville HS)… Davis put together a couple of great showings in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament last week. In a quarterfinal rout of North Georgia, he had 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists with no turnovers. He added 19 points and three rebounds in a semifinal defeat against UNC Pembroke, which Francis Marion (20-9) also happens to face in the first round of the NCAA D-II Southeast Regional this Saturday. KIMORA McCLINIC — Middle Georgia State University (Fr., G, Cartersville HS)… McClinic had just four total points as Middle Georgia State (8-21) went 1-1 in the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament, defeating ninth-seeded Brewton-Parker before falling by nine points to No. 1 seed Martin Methodist. McClinic had four points and one rebound in the victory, and she went scoreless with two steals in the loss. A.J. MOSBY — Alcorn State University (Sr., G, Cartersville HS)… Mosby landed all-SWAC second-team honors this week after finishing the regular season with averages of 15.2 points per game, 4.7 rebounds per game and 3.9 assists per game. He led the league in assist-to-turnover ratio and free-throw percentage (.873). Mosby also shot 50 percent from the floor and 40 percent from deep. In his final two regular season games, Mosby totaled 19 points against Prairie View A&M and 10 versus Texas Southern. He posted five rebounds in each game and dished out a total of 13 assists. He even grabbed five steals. Alcorn State (11-20) will travel to Prairie View for a SWAC quarterfinal on Thursday. JONATHAN PRITCHETT — Vermont Tech CC — Fr., G, Woodland HS)… Pritchett earned his first start of the season in the consolation bracket of the United States College Athletic Association Division II National Tournament. He took advantage with 15 points, two rebounds, one assist and six steals in 30 minutes. Vermont Tech finished the season with a 20-13 mark. CARROD WATSON — University of North Georgia (Soph., F, Woodland HS)… Watson had five points, two rebounds, one assist, two steals and one block in North Georgia's season-ending loss to Francis Marion in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Wednesday. The Nighthawks finished the year with a 12-17 record. RUDY WINTERS — Columbus State (R-Jr., G, Excel Christian Acad.)… Columbus State bowed out in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, ending Winters' season. However, he did everything he could to extend it. He had 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, including hitting one of two from deep, and a 6-of-7 performance at the line. CSU finished the season with a 9-17 mark. GOLF MAGGIE ASHMORE — Augusta University (Sr., Kingston, GA, Heritage Golf Acad., Hilton Head, SC)… Ashmore and Augusta opened play Monday in the 17-team Wildcat Invitational hosted by Arizona at Sewailo Golf Club. Ashmore shot an opening round 83 Monday, but the Lady Jaguars were in sixth place heading into Tuesday’s final round. After one round, UCLA had a 10-shot lead over Texas, followed by host Arizona, Long Beach State, and UNLV. HANNAH MAE DEEMS — Mercer University (Sr., Taylorsville, GA, Darlington HS)… Deems and Mercer began play Monday in the three-day, 13-team Hurricane Invitational hosted by Miami at the Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables. Deems fired a first round 75 and the Lady Bears were ninth after the opening round. 16th-ranked Oklahoma leads 24th-ranked Miami after one round, followed by Coastal Carolina and Virginia Tech. SOFTBALL SIERRAH GANI — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., OF, Cass HS)… Gani saw action in three of Georgia Highlands' four games this past week, but she only totaled four at bats and failed to reach base in any of them. For the season, she's hitting .255 with 10 runs scored and one RBI in 24 games. GHC (14-11, 2-2) plays at Andrew College Saturday and at ABAC Sunday. CASSIDY HOWREN — Reinhardt University (Sr., C, Adairsville HS)… Howren went 2-for-17 over a full weekend of action. She scored one run and had one RBI, while playing in Reinhardt's five games in the Gulf Shores Tournament in Alabama. Reinhardt (8-5, 2-0 AAC) hosts Thomas University (GA) Tuesday, Faulkner University (AL) Wednesday, and will play Lawrence Tech (MI) Friday in Columbus. They will then play in the NFCA Classic in Columbus Saturday through Monday. SYDNEY HODORFF — LaGrange College (Jr., C, Woodland HS)… Hodorff had two hits in 15 at bats during LaGrange's rough week. She scored once and drove in one run, but the Panthers went 0-6 during the stretch. LaGrange (2-12) plays at Huntingdon Tuesday before hosting Berea College (KY) Friday and Covenant College Saturday. BRITTANY HUTH — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., Inf., Cartersville HS)… Huth saw time in four games over the past week, swiping one base and scoring one run during that span. GHC (14-11, 2-2) plays at Andrew College Saturday and at ABAC Sunday. KAILAH RAIN — Embry-Riddle University (Sr., OF, Cartersville HS)… Rain finished 5-for-19 with four runs scored and two RBIs in five wins for Embry-Riddle over the past week. She also drew a pair of walks and improved to 7-for-7 on stolen base attempts. ERU hosts Young Harris College Wednesday and will travel to Florida Tech for a three-game Sunshine State Conference series Friday and Saturday. HANNAH TODD — University of North Carolina (Fr., P, Cartersville HS)… Todd failed to record an out in her only appearance over the past seven days. In her first career start for the Tar Heels, she allowed two doubles and a walk, while being charged with two earned runs in the eventual 7-3 loss to Elon. UNC (7-13) plays at UNC-Charlotte Wednesday and opens ACC play at home with a three-game series against Duke Friday through Sunday. ANNALYN YANTIS — Samford University (Jr., P, Cartersville HS)… Yantis fell to 1-4 on the season after allowing five runs (all earned) in five innings of a 9-5 loss to Tennessee Tech on Sunday. Yantis allowed six hits and two walks with just one strikeout, as Samford dropped to 3-14 on the season. The Bulldogs host Fort Wayne Tuesday, a doubleheader with Alabama State Wednesday and will play in the Easton Crimson Classic at the University of Alabama Friday through Sunday. TENNIS PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Jr., Cartersville, GA, Laurel Springs Acad.)… Gollhofer and Ball State haven't competed since Feb. 24, but the Cardinals will be in Georgia over the next two days. Ball State (5-4) will face Kennesaw State Tuesday and Mercer on Wednesday. TRACK AND FIELD SPENCER FIELDS — Rhodes College (Jr., Kingston, GA, Darlington HS)… Fields took second place in the 1500 meter run in the Mississippi College Season Opener outdoor meet. His time of 4 minutes, 4.23 seconds placed him directly between sophomore teammates Toler Freyaldenhoven (first place) and Ben Griffith (third), as Rhodes swept the top three places in the event. The Lynx qualifiers compete in the NCAA D-III Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday in Birmingham.

The Georgia Highlands College softball team dropped a conference doubleheader at home Saturday with Georgia Military College, 7-6 and 12-1. After Georgia Highlands took a 4-0 lead in the opening inning, Georgia Military scored six in the second and one more in the third inning for a 7-4 advantage. The Chargers added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and out-hit the Bulldogs ten to eight in the game, but could not gain the tying run down the stretch. Kindell Reeves hit a grand slam for the Chargers and Alia Booth had three hits and one RBI. Mya Adams and Hannah Wills also had two hits for Georgia Highlands. Lauren King homered for the Bulldogs and Natalie Johnson added two hits. In the second game, Georgia Military (15-6, 2-0) homered three times and pounded out 15 hits including four doubles as they scored two or more runs in all five innings of the game. Lexi Palazzo drove in the Chargers’ only run in the fourth inning. Hannah Wills finished with two hits. Kindell Reeves, Mya Adams, and Sally Fairbank had the only other GHC hits. Georgia Highlands (14-11, 2-2) plays a pair of road, conference doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at Andrew College and at Abraham Baldsin Agricultural College. First pitch each day is set for 1 p.m.

After dropping their conference opener Saturday at East Georgia CC, the Georgia Highlands College baseball team bounced back Sunday with a vengeance against non-conference foe Macomb (MI) CC, 24-7. The win completed a two-game sweep of the Monarchs by the Chargers and catapults GHC into a stretch of 19 straight conference games that extends into early April. The Chargers put 23 of their 24 runs on the scoreboard in the first four frames as they cruised to an easy win. A collection of five GHC pitchers limited the visiting Monarchs to only four although they did issue a dozen walks and hit a batter. Zach Fordham, Brady Barker, Cody Johnson, Jake Meyer, and Noah Bryant all toed the rubber for the Chargers. Georgia Highlands totaled sixteen hits and took advantage of 13 walks in the contest. Brandon Allen drove in four runs with two hits, including a double and a walk. Bryson Horne had three hits and two RBI. Blake Brady finished with two hits and three walks including a double and two RBI. Spencer Lewis added three RBI with a hit. Miguel Urbina also had three RBI. The Chargers (14-6, 0-1) open a four-game conference series with Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Wednesday at LakePoint and will play the final three games of the series in Tifton on Friday and Saturday.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL SPRING TRAINING SAM HOWARD — Colorado Rockies (5th yr. pro; LHP; Georgia Southern University; Cartersville HS)… worked the third and fourth innings of the Rockies’ second Spring game of the year February 24 and was credited with the win as Colorado defeated Cincinnati 11-4. Howard allowed one hit, two walks, and hit a batter but did not allow a run. He fanned two Reds. Last Thursday, Howard worked the third and fourth innings of a 2-2 tie with the Chicago Cubs. He allowed a leadoff walk in the third inning and — after a lineout — a two-run homer to Cubs’ centerfielder Ian Happ. Howard then retired the Cubs in order in the fourth inning. The Rockies are 3-6-1 in Cactus League play through Sunday’s games. CONNOR JUSTUS — Los Angeles Angels (3rd yr. pro; SS; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS)… saw action at shortstop and went 1-for-2 with the major league Los Angeles Angels February 23 in a 9-8 spring training, opening day loss to the Oakland A’s. He also had an at-bat and played shortstop last Monday in a 10-4 loss to the San Diego Padres. Justus has played 8 and one-third innings with the major league club and has no errors in four defensive chances. The Angels are 5-5 through Sunday’s Cactus League games. COLLEGE BASEBALL BRANDON ALLEN — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., OF/P, Woodland HS)… had one plate appearance Friday in the Chargers 8-3 win over Macomb (MI) CC. GHC (13-5, 0-1) won two of three games over the weekend, but the loss was at conference foe, East Georgia on Saturday. On Sunday, Allen drove in four runs with two hits, including a double and a walk in a 24-7 win over Macomb. The Chargers play a four-game series with Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday with only Wednesday’s game at home. ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Auburn University (Soph., LHP, Cartersville HS)… picked up his second win of the season last Tuesday despite allowing two earned runs on a hit and a walk. He entered to work a scoreless seventh with the Tigers trailing 4-3 and his offense provided four runs in the top of the eighth for a 7-4 lead at the time. Anderson allowed a hit and a walk in the eighth and was removed. Those runners eventually scored, but the Tigers held on for a one-run win. In last Friday’s series opener vs. Brigham Young, he entered in the sixth inning and allowed a hit to the only batter he faced in the Tigers’ 4-3 win. Auburn (12-0) remains undefeated in 2018 and plays at UAB Tuesday night before hosting Northeastern in a weekend series Friday through Sunday. BAILEY CAMPBELL — Young Harris College (Fr., 1B, Cass HS)… appeared in three games this past week and was 2-for-4 as a pinch hitter and DH replacement. The Mountain Lions were 2-2 for the week that included wins in two of three Peach Belt Conference games against 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke. YHC (8-10, 4-5) hosts Tusculum College Tuesday before traveling to Augusta University Friday through Sunday for a three-game conference series. BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Limestone College (Sr., OF, Cass HS)… went 5-for-12 in a weekend series at Francis Marion University as the Saints won two of three games. Etheridge drove in two runs, scored four, and walked four times. The starting center fielder raised his batting average to .268 in 18 starts. He has walked nine times with four RBI and a pair of extra base hits. Limestone (10-8, 2-1) hosts Saginaw Valley State University in a pair of mid-week games Tuesday and Wednesday before traveling to Emmanuel College (GA) for a three-game Conference Carolinas series Friday and Saturday. CODY JOHNSON — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., RHP, Cass HS)… worked an inning and one-third Sunday in the Chargers’ 24-7 win over Macomb (MI) CC. He allowed an earned run on two hits and a walk while striking out two. Georgia Highlands (14-6, 0-1 GCAA) hosts Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College at LakePoint Wednesday in the first game of a four-game conference series that continues with a single game Friday and and doubleheader Saturday in Tifton. SEAN McDERMOTT — Mercer University (Jr., 1B, Adairsville HS)… went 1-for-6 in a pair of starts last Tuesday and Wednesday as the Bears swept a home-and-home series with Kennesaw State. Mercer (8-2) hosts a three-game series Sunday and Monday, March 4-5 with Holy Cross. HARRISON OSBORN — Point University (Fr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… earned his second pitching win of the year last Tuesday in an 8-4 Skyhawks win over visiting Tuskegee University. Harrison allowed four earned runs on five hits and a walk in five innings. He fanned three. Point (12-6, 3-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference) won all five games last week including a three-game sweep of Bluefield College (VA). The Skyhawks travel to Talladega College for a doubleheader Wednesday before hosting a three-game conference series with St. Andrews University (NC) Friday and Saturday. HUNTER REAID — Shorter University (Fr., C, Woodland HS)… drew a pair of walks and scored a run in a start Saturday as the Hawks lost 9-4 to visiting Mississippi College. He also had one plate appearance in a second game Saturday won by the Choctaws, 8-6. Reaid has a .267 batting average in 15 at-bats with one double, four walks, and one RBI. Shorter (9-10, 2-4 Gulf South Conference) travels to Florence, AL Saturday and Sunday for a three-game conference series at University of North Alabama. TRISTIN SMITH — Young Harris College (R-Jr., Inf., Adairsville HS)… In a start at second base, Smith coaxed a walk and scored a run in the Mountain Lions’ 10-4 win Saturday over 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke. He ntered off the bench Friday and went 1-for-1 with two walks and scored a run in an 8-4 victory and was 0-for-1 but was hit by a pitch last Tuesday in a 5-4 loss to Truett-McConnell. YHC (8-10, 4-5 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Tusculum College Tuesday and plays a three-game series Friday through Sunday at Augusta University. TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (Sr., OF, Adairsville HS)… was 1-for-5 with a walk and a sacrifice in a pair of starts and wins Friday and Saturday against 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke. He also entered off the bench and went 2-for-2 last Tuesday in a home loss to Truett-McConnell. Washington has a .243 batting average in 37 at-bats with six walks and three RBI. YHC (8-10, 4-5) hosts Tusculum College Tuesday before traveling to Augusta University Friday through Sunday for a three-game Peach Belt Conference series.

Following a pair of come-from-behind victories Saturday, the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes baseball team moved up to No. 2 in the latest update of the Georgia Dugout Club’s high school baseball polls. Cartersville edged Class 6A top-ranked River Ridge 9-8 in extra innings Saturday and then scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat the host team, Class 7A 10th-ranked Forsyth Central 5-4. As a result, the Canes have won three in a row and and six of seven. Adairsville swept a home doubleheader with Armuchee Saturday 10-0 and 13-7. The wins snapped a brief two-game skid. The Tigers had opened the season with four straight victories. In Class AAAAA, Carrollton (7-3) is ranked No. 3 from the region that includes Woodland and Cass. Also from Region 7-AAAAA, Villa Rica (6-3) and Rome (3-3) received consideration.
