The Cass High School wrestling team opens the first round of the Class AAAAA State Duals Championship Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Macon Centreplex. The Area 7-AAAAA champion Colonels face Decatur in the first round. An opening round win would pit Cass against the Harris County/Starr’s Mill winner in the state quarterfinals Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. The tournament continues through Saturday.

The Woodland girls and boys basketball teams fell to visiting Rome Wednesday night in Region 7-AAAAA action. ROME GIRLS 59, WOODLAND 31 Rome led 9-7 after one period, 28-15 at halftime, and 47-22 through three quarters in a 59-31 win Wednesday night at Woodland. Tanah Gibson led Rome with 14 points. Amberly Brown added 11 for the Lady Wolves (11-2, 4-1). Carli Clymer and Madgie Robinson finished with eight points each for for Lady Cats. Whitney Harris contributed seven, Morgan Cooper five, Lauren Morris two, and Nickiah Metcalf scored one point. Woodland (3-10, 1-7) hosts Carrollton Saturday at 3 p.m. in another Region 7-AAAAA contest. ROME BOYS 61, WOODLAND 55 The Woodland boys trailed early, but battled their way back in the second half before dropping a six-point decision at home Wednesday night to Rome, 61-55. Rome led 20-16 after one quarter and 36-28 at the intermission before Woodland rallied to tie the game at 44 after three quarters. The visiting Wolves outscored the Wildcats 17-11 over the final eight minutes for the Region 7-AAAAA win. Caleb Byrd led Rome with 15 points and KJ Brown scored 14. Xavier Brown added eight of his 11 points for the Wolves in the fourth quarter. Hunter Johnson led Woodland with 15 points that included four three-pointers. Connor Gallagher followed with 11. Dawson Wilkins scored nine, Justice Carter six, Peyton Roberts and Jaylen Ballard five each, and DJ Robinson added four points. Rome evened its season mark at 5-5 overall and 2-2 in region play. All four local high school girls basketball teams lost region games Tuesday night. KELL GIRLS 39, WOODLAND 26 The Woodland girls dropped a Region 7-AAAAA game Tuesday night at Kell, 39-26. Kell led 13-7 after one quarter, 24-14 at halftime, and 33-16 through three quarters on their way to the 13-point win. Sierra Hick and Kya Williams led Kell with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Ashley Sparrow added eight. Woodland was led by senior Whitney Harris with 10 points. Carli Clymer scored six points, Nickiah Metcalf five, Madgie Robinson three, and Lauren Morris two points. Kell improved to 5-9 overall and 3-3 in region play. Woodland (3-9, 1-6) hosts Rome Wednesday night at 6 p.m. and 9th-ranked Carrollton Saturday at 3 p.m. SANDY CREEK GIRLS 44, CARTERSVILLE 28 The Sandy Creek girls made 14 of 18 fourth quarter free throws and outscored the Lady Canes 18-4 in the final period to defeat Cartersville 44-28 Tuesday night at the Storm Center. Daija Powell and Nina Lun led the visiting Lady Patriots with 15 points each. Paris Thompson and Jania Hodges added seven each. London Shaw scored eight points to lead Cartersville. Amya Davis scored five. Jada Cunningham, Addie Smith, and Kalli Scheff added four apiece. Cio Seigler scored three points. Sandy Creek (9-6, 3-0) remained unbeaten in Region 5-AAAA. Cartersville (5-8, 0-3) entertains Chapel Hill Friday night at 6 p.m. HARALSON COUNTY GIRLS 69, ADAIRSVILLE 26 The Adairsville girls lost at Class AAA 10th-ranked Haralson County Tuesday night 69-26. The Lady Rebels (12-1, 4-1 Region 6-AAA) took a 21-6 lead after one quarter and maintained a comfortable lead throughout. Alexis Boykin led four Haralson players in double-figures with 13 points. Kayleigh Bagwell scored 11 while Claire Robinson and Indiya Smith added ten each. Havyn Isaac paced Adairsville with eight points. Josie Summerville scored seven. Breeana Wilson followed with six. Nikiyah Washington scored three and Lori Cimino two for the Lady Tigers. Adairsville (2-14, 1-5) hosts Sonoraville Friday night at 7 p.m. and Armuchee Saturday at 6 p.m. ROME GIRLS 65, CASS 42 Visiting Rome improved to 11-2 overall and 3-1 in Region 7-AAAAA with a dominating 23-point win Tuesday night at Cass. The Cartersville boys won a back-and-forth Region 5-AAAA battle of two top ten ranked teams Tuesday night at the Storm Center by edging Sandy Creek, 62-58. The visiting Patriots ran out to an early 13-3 lead before Cartersville narrowed that margin to 17-16 after eight minutes. The Canes led 30-26 at halftime, but Sandy Creek took a 47-42 advantage heading into the final quarter. Cartersville outscored Sandy Creek 20 to 11 in the final period for their come-from-behind victory. Jaylon Pugh led the Canes’ scoring attack with 25 points. T.J. Horton followed with 16 points. Perignon Dyer added nine, Luke Schiltz six, JKobe Orr four, and Grant Harris two points. Jarred Godfrey scored a game-high 28 to lead Sandy Creek (11-4, 2-1). Julian Alexander added 15 more for the Patriots. Cartersville (11-2, 4-0) entertains Chapel Hill in another Region 5-AAAA game Friday night. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 68, HARALSON COUNTY 48 The Adairsville boys broke open a close game with a big third quarter and cruised to a 68-48 win Tuesday night at region-rival Haralson County. Ethan Belcher had a game-high 18 points to lead the Tigers. Mason Boswell scored 15 and Hunter Hice added 14 for Adairsville. The Rebels (2-10, 0-5) were led by 14 points from Nijan Smith. Adairsville (8-8, 4-3) host Sonoraville Friday and Armuchee Saturday. CASS BOYS 46, ROME 42 The Cass boys edged visiting Rome Tuesday night in a key Region 7-AAAAA game, 46-42. Justice Hayes led the Colonels with 15 points, followed by Ashton Burley with 12 and Carter Hedden with eight points. Rome slipped to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in region play with the loss. Cass (10-5, 4-3) plays region games at unbeaten and 6th-ranked Villa Rica Friday night at 8:30 p.m. and at Paulding County Saturday at 6 p.m. KELL BOYS 49, WOODLAND 37 The Woodland boys lost to visiting Kell Tuesday night 49-37 in a Region 7-AAAAA matchup. The Longhorns took a 13-4 lead after one period and extended it to 28-11 by halftime. Kell led 40-22 through three quarters. Savvon Dielgado led Kell with 14 points. Jahwan Smith added eight for the Longhorns (8-7, 5-1). Nine different Wildcats scored but none reached double digits. Hunter Johnson led Woodland with nine, followed by seven from Jaylen Ballard, five by Dawson Wilkins, four each by DJ Robinson and Charles Norman, three by Kenny Jinks, two each by Dustin Ivie and Justice Carter, and one point by Peyton Roberts. Vic Beasley and the Atlanta Falcons advanced in the NFL playoffs while local collegiate wrestlers and basketball players made their marks this past week. VIC BEASLEY — Atlanta Falcons (3rd yr. pro; Clemson University; Adairsville HS)… the Falcons’ 2015 first round draft choice and 2016 NFL sacks leader had three tackles (two solo) and one pass defended Saturday night as 6th-seeded Atlanta defeated the 3rd-seeded LA Rams 26-13 in the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs. Atlanta (11-6) travels to NFC top-seed Philadelphia (13-3) for the Divisional Round this Saturday. WRESTLING EVAN COLE — Cumberland University (Sr., Cartersville HS)… wrestling at 149-pounds at the NWCA Duals in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Cole defeated Antoinio Ruiz of University of Jamestown 10-3 in a 29-9 team win by the Phoenix January 4. At that same meet and wrestling some of the nation’s top competition in the division, Cole lost bouts to 6th-ranked Thomas Garty of 3rd-ranked Indiana Tech and 14th-ranked Colby Johnson from 15th-ranked Baker University. Cumberland (2-3) travels to Lakeland, Florida this weekend where they will face 8th-ranked Southeastern University and 3rd-ranked Indiana Tech. JAKE HUFFINE — Chattanooga (Jr., Woodland HS)… lost a pair of matches at the Southern Scuffle January 1 hosted by Chattanooga. Competing at 133-pounds, Huffine lost 10-5 to Sean Nickell of CSU-Bakersfield and 12-3 to Garrett Lambert of Hofstra. Penn State won the 24-team tournament. Chattanooga placed 11th and returns to the mats Friday and Saturday at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, VA. BASKETBALL RYAN DAVIS — Francis Marion University (Jr., G, Cartersville HS)… scored nine points with six rebounds, five assists, and one steal in a start and 27 minutes last Wednesday in a 78-72 loss at USC-Aiken. He added two points on only one field goal attempt in nine minutes off the bench in a 66-59 home loss Saturday to Clayton State. FMU (8-3, 3-3) has dropped three straight Peach Belt Conference games. The Patriots host St. Andrews (NC) in a non-conference game Monday before hosting PBC foe Lander Wednesday. They also travel to Georgia Southwestern Saturday. KIMORA McCLINIC — Middle Georgia State University (Fr., G, Cartersville HS)… grabbed three rebounds with one steal and one point in a 67-45 loss at University of Mobile last Thursday. She also scored four points with three rebounds and one assist Saturday afternoon in a 67-58 loss at Loyola (LA). McClinic is averaging just over five points per game and 2.5 rebounds. She has one start and has appeared in 11 of the Knights 13 games this season. MGSU (4-9, 1-4 Southern State Athletic Conference) hosts Coastal Georgia Tuesday night and plays at Brewton-Parker Saturday afternoon. JANA MORNING — Berry College (Fr., G, Cass HS)… scored two points in both road conference losses last week at Rhodes College on Friday and at Hendrix College on Sunday. She added two rebounds and one assist at Rhodes. Morning has one start and has appeared in 13 games this season. The Vikings (5-8, 0-3 Southern State Athletic Conference) host conference rivals Centre and Sewanee this Friday and Sunday. A.J. MOSBY — Alcorn State University (Sr., G, Cartersville HS)… scored 14 points at Texas Southern Wednesday and 16 more at home Saturday against Jackson State in a pair of Braves’ Southwestern Athletic Conference losses. Mosby, a starting guard, added four rebounds, four assists, and a steal in those two games. ASU (4-12, 0-3) hosts Grambling State Monday night and travels to Mississippi Valley State this Saturday. ELIJAH ROBINSON — Emmanuel College (Sr., F, Excel Christian Acad.)… returned to the Lions’ starting lineup as his team split a pair of games this past week against Carolinas Conference opponents. It was his second and third starts of the season. Robinson scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds in a 68-58 home win over Limestone College last Tuesday. He also scored 15 points, collected three rebounds, dished five assists, and had a blocked shot in a 116-104 loss at Belmont Abbey College last Friday. Robinson missed a dozen games from late November through December due to a nagging injury. Emmanuel (8-7, 2-3) plays at Erskine College Tuesday and at Lees-McRae Saturday. DARIUS THROWER — Truett-McConnell University (Soph., G, Excel Christian Acad.)… scored five points last Tuesday in a 96-88 loss at Allen University (SC) and did not score, but had one assist last Thursday in a 93-80 home loss to Reinhardt University. TMU (12-6, 5-4 Appalachian Athletic Conference) entertains Milligan College Wednesday night and travels to Bluefield College (VA) this Saturday. COREY TOBIN — Reinhardt University (Sr., G, Cartersville HS)… averaged eight points, just over eight rebounds, 3.3 assists, and added a block and a steal in three starts last week as the Eagles rolled to Appalachian Athletic Conference wins over Tennessee Wesleyan (96-90) at home and on the road at Truett-McConnell (93-80) and St. Andrews (NC) (104-99). Tobin’s 14 rebounds at St. Andrews was a season high and gave him a double-double. RU (11-6, 6-3) plays at Thomas University Tuesday and hosts Montreat College (NC) Saturday afternoon. CARROD WATSON — University of North Georgia (Soph., F, Woodland HS)… scored 12 points with three rebounds, one assist, and one steal Saturday in a 76-74 win at USC-Aiken. He also grabbed a pair of rebounds and had one assist without scoring last Tuesday in a 95-80 victory at Columbus State University. Watson has started seven games and appeared in every game for the Nighthawks this season. UNG (5-7, 3-3 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Young Harris College Wednesday and Augusta University Saturday in PBC games. HAKEEM WINTERS — Point University (Jr., F, Cartersville HS)… saw three minutes of floor time off the bench in a 74-71 home Appalachian Athletic Conference win over 15th-ranked Union College (KY). Winters has started five games and appeared in 16 of 18 this season for the Skyhawks while averaging 3.8 points and 2.5 rebounds. Point (5-13, 1-8 AAC) entertains St. Andrews University (NC) Wednesday night and travels to Tennessee Wesleyan Saturday. RUDY WINTERS — Columbus State University (Jr., G, Excel Christian Acad.)… scored 12 points with eight rebounds and one steal Saturday at Augusta. Winters is averaging 11.1 points and four rebounds in seven games played this season for the Cougars. He has started six games. CSU (3-6, 3-3 Peach Belt Conference) plays at Georgia Southwestern Wednesday night and hosts UNC-Pembroke Saturday afternoon in two more PBC games.

The Cass wrestling team won the Area 7-AAAAA Dual Championship Saturday by defeating Carrollton in the finals, 43-31. Cass defeated Kell 52-20 in the opening round and took down Hiram 59-21 in the semifinals. Carrollton defeated Woodland in the other semifinal. Starting at the 182-pound weight class in the finals, the Colonels and Trojans split the first two matches with Carrollton taking a brief 6-3 lead. Beau Smith of Cass won a 6-5 minor decision at 182-pounds, but Carrollton’s Chase Sippola pinned Tyrese Dawson at 195-pounds to give the Trojans a lead. Cass then got back-to-back wins by seniors Tripp Breeden (forfeit) and Seven Richards (pin) at 220- and 285-pounds, respectively, to take a lead they would not relinquish at 15-6. Derrick Smith (113-pounds, pin), Ben Mills (126-pounds, pin), Tyler Pilcher (132-pounds, major decision), Kameron Depasquale (138-pounds, pin), and Kendall Arnold (145-pounds, pin) put the match away for the Colonels with a 43-13 lead. Cass then chose to forfeit matches at 152-, 160-, and 170-pounds to avoid risking injury to make the final score 43-31. Derrick Smith (113), Tyler Pilcher (132), Kameron Depasquale (138), Kendall Arnold (145), Blake Carrington (152), Noah Hoffmeier (160), Rett Moore (170), Tripp Breeden (220), and Seven Richards (285) were all unbeaten on the day for the Colonels. Cass and Carrollton advance to the 2018 GHSA State Dual Wrestling Championships in Macon this Thursday through Saturday at the Macon Centreplex. The opening round for Class AAAAA begins at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Former Cartersville High School and future Clemson University quarterback Trevor Lawrence wrapped up his prep career Saturday by participating in the US Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, TX. The game was played in the Alamodome and was won by the West team, 17-16. Lawrence, who was named Player of the Year by the All-American Bowl, was a member of the East team. His high school head coach, Joey King of Cartersville, served as the East team's offensive coordinator. Lawrence started the game and shared time with other quarterbacks on the East team. He tossed a pair of interceptions in his first two drives, but his final three possessions on the field ended with a field goal and two touchdowns. Lawrence with coach Joey King A two-point conversion attempt in the waning seconds failed, allowing the West team to hold on for a one-point win. Lawrence was 11-for-17 passing in the game for 83 yards and one touchdown pass. He also rushed five times for a total of 13 net yards. He had a long run of 11 yards and his longest pass completion went for 22 yards.

The Cartersville wrestling team placed fourth Saturday at the Area 5-AAAA Championship. Troup defeated Central-Carroll in the finals and those two teams will represent the league at the state duals tournament Thursday through Saturday in Macon. Cartersville lost to Troup to open the tournament, but defeated Chapel Hill to reach the consolation finals where the Canes fell to LaGrange. Jonathan De La Cruz was 3-0 in his matches Saturday at 182-pounds. Garret Geros (170-pounds) was 2-0. Jalen Thomas (138-pounds) and Tyler Earick finished the day 2-1. The Canes will now focus on the traditional (individual) format for the remainder of their 2017-18 season with those Area Tournaments coming up later in January.

CARTERSVILLE BOYS 64, LaGRANGE 60 The Hurricanes trailed by 13 points late in the third quarter, but rallied late to outlast the host LaGrange Grangers Saturday evening, 64-60, in a Region 5-AAAA battle. T.J. Horton scored 25 points to lead Cartersville. Bo Russell led the Grangers (10-6, 1-2) with 27 points. Perignon Dyer converted five three-pointers to contribute 15 points for the Canes. Jaylon Pugh followed with 13. Cartersville (10-2, 3-0) entertains Sandy Creek in another important region game Tuesday night at the Storm Center. LaGRANGE GIRLS 46, CARTERSVILLE 35 Aryan Dozier and Mo Strozier scored 18 points each to help lead the Lady Grangers to a home win over Cartersville Saturday afternoon in a Region 5-AAAA game. LaGrange (6-9, 3-0) led 13-8 after one quarter, 20-19 at halftime, and built a 34-24 lead after three quarters on their way to an 11-point victory. Cio Seigler led the Lady Canes with 13 points. Kalli Scheff scored seven. Addie Smith and Amya Davis followed with six points apiece. Ariana Cochran added three points. Cartersville (5-8, 0-3) hosts Sandy Creek Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at the Storm Center. ROCKMART GIRLS 53, ADAIRSVILLE 52 The Lady Jackets made a free throw with 0:20 remaining to take a one point lead that proved to be the margin of victory. The Lady Tigers had a shot at the end and a pair of follow up attempts on offensive rebounds, but were unable to convert in the one-point loss. Rockmart won the first meeting between these teams earlier in the year by 31 points. Adairsville led 19-15 after one quarter and the game was tied at 27-all at halftime. The Lady Tigers held a 42-38 edge heading into the final period, but were unable to hold on. Keyarah Berry had a game-high 26 points for Rockmart followed by Madison Davis with 10. Nakiyah Washington led Adairsville with 16 points. Josie Summerville and Havyn Isaac followed with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Coriana McDaniel contributed seven, Breeana Wilson six, and Alexa Varner two points. Rockmart improved to 10-4 on the season. Adairsville (2-13) plays at Haralson County Tuesday at 6 p.m. ROCKMART BOYS 51, ADAIRSVILLE 45 Although the Tigers went into the final period tied and Mason Boswell finished with a game-high 21 points, Adairsville lost Saturday night at Rockmart 51-45. Rockmart led 9-7 after one quarter, but Adairsville took a 26-24 lead into the locker room at halftime in the back-and-forth non-region battle. Sam Depew led the Yellow Jackets with 16. He scored 13 of those points in the decisive second half. Hunter Hice and Cody Henderson each contributed nine points for the Tigers. Rockmart improved to 9-5 on the season with the victory. Adairsville (7-8, 3-3) plays at Haralson County Tuesday night.

The Cartersville High School swim team won the 2017-18 Bartow County Swimming Championship Saturday with a boys and girls combined total of 297 points. Adairsville (270) was second, Woodland (202) third, and Cass (121) was fourth in the annual event held at Adairsville High School. The Lady Canes (196) were first among the girls’ teams, followed by Adairsville (115), Woodland (100), and Cass (43). In the boys’ events, Adairsville totaled 155 points with Woodland (102) second, Cartersville (101) third, and Cass (78) fourth. The girls top individual performer was Giulia Vidoli of Cartersville. Dawson McClure of Woodland was recognized as the boys top performer. Three boys teams picked up region wins Friday night in local high school basketball action. Woodland, Cartersville, and Adairsville were the victors. In girls action, Woodland picked up a region victory over visiting East Paulding. WOODLAND BOYS 84, EAST PAULDING 81 Jaylen Ballard led Woodland with 19 points — 13 in the second half — as the Wildcats defeated visiting East Paulding Friday night. Horton scored a game-high 25 points, Jaylon Pugh added 15, and JKobe Orr 13 as the 10th-ranked Hurricanes won a Region 5-AAAA game at Central-Carroll Friday night. Cartersville led 17-13 after one period, 35-23 at half, and 51-37 through three quarters. Perignon Dyer and Isaac Gridley rounded out the Canes’ scoring with nine and eight points, respectively. Josh McClendon scored 20 points to lead the Lions. Jarrod Jackson added 14 for Central (8-6, 0-2). Cartersville (8-2, 2-0) plays at LaGrange Saturday with tip scheduled for 5:30 p.m. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 70, CALHOUN 68 The Tigers won a back-and-forth battle with rival Calhoun Friday night at home, 70-68, to even their season mark at 7-7 and Region 6-AAA mark at 3-3. Calhoun led 31-27 at the intermission, but the Tigers took a 43-41 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Davis Allen and Bralin Bartin paced Calhoun (1-9, 1-1) with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Cody Henderson led Adairsville with 26 points, followed by Hunter HIce with 13 and Ethan Belcher 10. Mason Boswell added six points. Gaven Crunkelton and Jessie O’Kelley added three. Malachi Gardner scored two points for the Tigers. The Tigers play at Rockmart Saturday night. CARROLLTON BOYS 56, CASS 50 The Colonels lost back-to-back games for the first time this season in falling at Region 7-AAAAA rival Carrollton Friday night, 56-50. Tim Green led Carrollton with 18 points. Jeffrey Hodges scored 14 and Marcellus Lochet 12 for the Trojans (10-4, 3-2). Cass stayed within striking distance for most of the game, but trailed at each stanza. The Trojans led 14-9 after one quarter, 28-20 at intermission, and 37-24 through three quarters. Ethan Carter and Carter Hedden scored 11 points each for Cass. Ashton Burley and Mark Chester followed with nine each. Justice Hayes added eight and Steven Spell two for the Colonels. Cass (9-5, 3-3) hosts Rome Tuesday night. WOODLAND GIRLS 56, EAST PAULDING 51 A second half rally, led by senior Whitney Harris, propelled the Woodland girls to a come-from-behind, region win Friday night over East Paulding. Harris scored 21 of her game-high 22 points in the second half as the Lady Cats narrowed the Lady Raiders lead to only two points — 39-37 — heading into the final eight minutes. From there, Woodland outscored East Paulding 19-12 in the final period for their first region win of the year. Woodland led after one period 12-9, but East Paulding took a 26-21 advantage to the intermission. Kimbelyn Black led the Lady Raiders (2-8, 0-5) with 20 points. Woodland (3-8, 1-5) snapped a four-game skid and travels to Kell Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start. CENTRAL-CARROLL GIRLS 54, CARTERSVILLE 39 Janae Jackson scored 19 and Nyah Howton 16 as Central-Carroll (8-5, 1-1) defeated Cartersville Friday night in Carrollton, 54-39. Cio Siegler led Cartersville with 12 points. Kalli Scheff and Aliyah Sellers followed with six each. Addie Smith and Jada Cunningham each scored four. Amaya Davis finished with three points. London Shaw and Naijah Evans scored two apiece. Cartersville (5-7, 0-2) plays at LaGrange Saturday at 5:30 p.m. CALHOUN GIRLS 69, ADAIRSVILLE 57 The Lady Jackets outscored Adairsville 22-4 in the second quarter Friday night and then held off the Lady Tigers down the stretch for a 69-57 Region 6-AAA win at Adairsville. Erin Davis had a game-high 23 points to lead Calhoun (5-6, 2-1). Maggie McBrayer followed with 14 and Railey Greeson 11 for the Lady Jackets. Josie Summerville and Nakiyah Washington led Adairsville with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Havyn Isaac scored 10 and Breeana Wilson nine. Adairsville (2-12, 1-4) plays at Rockmart Saturday night at 5 p.m. CARROLLTON GIRLS 48, CASS 35 The Lady Colonels fell behind 12-8 after one quarter, trailed 26-16 at half, and 37-24 after three quarters in a 48-35 loss at 10th-ranked Carrollton. The Lady Trojans improved to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in region play. Lyric Curtis and Kyla Michienzi scored eight points each for Cass. The Lady Colonels (9-5, 3-3 Region 7-AAAAA) host 9th-ranked Rome next Tuesday at 6 p.m.
