  • Colonels win at Hiram

    The Cass boys soccer team won a road, non-region soccer match Thursday night at Hiram High School, 7-2. The Colonels exploded for six first half goals on their way to a 6-1 advantage at the intermission, then added a second half goal for their five-goal win. Hiram slipped to a 2-9 season record with the loss. Cass improved to a 6-7-1 mark.

  • Canes tie Class 6A Marietta, 1-1

    The Cartersville boys soccer team played Marietta High School to a 1-1 draw Thursday night at home. The visiting Blue Devils were in the Class AAAAAA quarterfinals one year ago and provided great competition for the Canes as they prepare for the playoffs. Marietta scored its goal in about the 20th minute on a penalty kick. The Canes came back with a goal in the 58th minute from freshman Victor Guevara on an assist from Efrain Milian. Cartersville (9-3-1) plays at Woodland Friday (April 1).

  • Lady Tigers remain undefeated; Tigers blanked by Mountaineers

    The 7th-ranked Adairsville girls soccer team continued its winning ways Thursday night on a rain-soaked evening in Chatsworth, blanking North Murray 8-0. The win moves the Lady Tigers unbeaten streak to 13-0 with an important home match with Sonoraville scheduled for Friday. Both teams are currently unbeaten in Region 6-AAA matches. The only loss of the year suffered by the Lady Phoenix was to Class 5-A Rome. With the victory, Adairsville girls' head coach David Sexauer picked up his 100th win in nine years at the helm with the Lady Tigers. Emily Collum scored four goals in the game. Chloe Cochran scored twice and added a pair of assists. Haley Pittman and Gillian Johnson also contributed goals. Havyn Isaac recorded another shutout in net. In the boys game, the Adairsville Tigers soccer team was shutout, 8-0. On a rain-soaked evening, the Tigers struggled on the road without several regular starters recovering from injuries. "We moved the ball okay," said Adairsville coach Kelly Abernathy, "but we couldn't capitalize on the shots we were able to take." The Tigers will regroup for their next Region 6-AAA match. "We need Spring Break to recover," added Abernathy. "Hopefully that will give us time to get healed up and ready for Ringgold. We need a win to make it into the region playoffs."

  • Lady Colonels fall at Hiram

    The Cass girls soccer team lost a non-region match at Hiram Thursday evening, 3-1. Sidney Vermaas scored in the opening half for the Lady Colonels to knot the score at halftime, 1-1, but a pair of second half goals by the Lady Hornets dispatched Cass. Hiram evened their season mark at 6-6 with the win. The Lady Colonels (3-10-1) are scheduled to play at Sprayberry April 13.

  • Bartow County Track & Field Championship rescheduled

    The 2016 Bartow County Track & Field Championship, originally scheduled for Thursday (March 31) at Cass High School, has been postponed due to inclement weather. Rain throughout the day on Thursday and the forecast of continued rain throughout the evening forced the decision. The event has been rescheduled for Monday, April 11at Cass High School with a new rain date set for April 12. Schools in the community go on spring break next week, so the date was established for the following week.

  • Knuchel's 39 leads Lady Cats golf past Adairsville

    The Woodland girls golf team defeated Adairsville 134-162 Wednesday. Makayla Knuchel led all players, shooting a 3-over par 39. The Lady Cats play again on April 12th.

  • Woodland edged late by Kell; Cass falls to River Ridge

    KELL 1, WOODLAND 0 The visiting Kell Longhorns manufactured a run in the top of the seventh innings Wednesday night, to defeat Woodland, 1-0. Luke Hughes was hit by a pitch to start the seventh inning. He then stole second and scored on an RBI single to left field by Anthony Porter. Kell pitcher, Chris Lucero, grabbed the pitching win with a complete-game shutout. He scattered three hits with no walks and struck out ten. Trent Harrison was the hard-luck, losing pitcher for the Wildcats. Harrison toss six innings of shutout baseball before yielding the deciding run in the seventh. He scattered four hits and struck out six. Grant Robinson went 2-for-3 for Woodland. Harrison had the only other hit for the Wildcats. Kell improved its season mark to 12-5. The Longhorns are 9-3 in 7-AAAAA-B. Woodland (2-14, 1-11 in 7-AAAAA-A) has a three-game, sub-region series next week with county-rival Cass. The games are at Cass on Monday and Friday (April 4 and 8). The Wildcats will host Wednesday’s game (April 6). All three games are scheduled for 5:55pm starts. RIVER RIDGE 11, CASS 5 River Ridge won the middle game of a three-game, sub-region series Wednesday night at Cass, 11-5. The Knights also won Monday night 8-0, so the Colonels will try to avoid the sweep Friday, back at River Ridge in Woodstock. The Knights scored ten runs in the third and fourth innings combined Wednesday to take control. River Ridge took their initial lead in the top of the first on a single by Connor Pavolony and an RBI double by Luke Berryhill to go up, 1-0. The Knights then scored six times in the third to go up 7-0 on three hits, three walks, a hit batsman, and two infield errors. The Colonels got in the board in the bottom of the third when Cody Johnson reached on an error and eventually scored on a single by Steven Spell. Four more River Ridge runs in the next inning gave the Knights an 11-1 lead. Four singles, a double, and one hit batsman accounted for the fourth inning runs. Cass scored two runs in the fifth and two more in the six to narrow the margin to the 11-5 final, but could get no closer. Nathan Smith had a two-run double for the Colonels in the fifth inning. Brett Gaddy and Tyler Hendon had RBI hits in the sixth. Branson Bowling had a four-hit game for River Ridge with 2 RBI. Nick Blubaugh, who also garnered the pitching win, drove in three runs on a pair of hits. Blubaugh (4 IP, 1R, 0ER, 3H, 0BB, 4K) started. Chandler Hampton (2 IP, 4ER, 6H, 0BB) and Fitzgerald (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB) worked the final three frames. Evan Hinton (3.1 IP, 10R, 8ER, 8H, 3BB, 2K) took the pitching loss for the Colonels. Austin Pruett (1.2 IP, 1ER, 3H, 1BB), Johnson (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 2K), and Spell (1 IP, 0R, 1H) each pitched in the contest. Tyler Hendon, Spell, and Jordan Reed had two hits each for Cass. Hendon, Spell, Gaddy, and Smith (2) accounted for the RBIs. Bailey Campbell, Gaddy, and Smith each contributed one hit for the Colonels. River Ridge improved to 10-6 overall and 7-4 in sub-region play. Cass (4-12, 3-8 in 7-AAAAA-A) travels to River Ridge on Friday for a 5:55pm start.

  • Canes dispatch Raiders, 7-4

    Cartersville scored seven runs over the first three innings, then held on for a 7-4 home victory over Southeast Whitfield Wednesday night at Richard Bell Field. The Canes’ starting pitcher, Harrison Osborn (3 IP, 3R, 0ER, 3H, 3K), picked up the pitching win. Spencer Dickey (2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1K) Carrington Evans (1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 1K) , and Mason Barnett (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K) worked the final four innings on the bump for Cartersville. Trevor Lowe and Parker Tidwell had two hits each for the Canes. Tidwell drove in a pair of runs and Lowe added one RBI. The pair, along with Noah Daniel, also tripled. Evans had two RBI and a double. Elliott Anderson contributed a double at the plate. Cartersville took a 5-0 lead after two innings before Southeast (6-11, 0-4) responded with three runs in the top of the third. The Canes added two more runs in the third inning to lead 7-3. The Raiders scored a single run in the top of the sixth for the 7-4 final score. Cartersville (8-7, 4-1 Region 7-AAAA) plays at Heritage-Catoosa Friday. First pitch is set for 5:30pm.

Former Woodland pole vaulter, Samantha Patterson (photo), won the Emory Classic in Atlanta March 25-26 to highlight this week's entries. Bartow Sports Zone periodically updates results for athletes from Bartow County contributing to collegiate athletic programs across the nation. NOTE: Baseball and softball ran in separate features this past week. TRACK AND FIELD SPENCER FIELDS — Rhodes College (Fr., Kingston, GA, Darlington HS) . . . teamed with senior Connor Fagan, freshman Adam Hearn, and Matt Dsida at the Raleigh Relays to run a 8:09.97 in the 4x800 while the same team ran the 4x1500 with a time of 16:43.31. The Lynx return to the track April 1 in St. Louis at the WashU Invite. TROY HICKOM — Clayton State University (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . placed 18th (4:13.64) of 46 competitors in the 1500 meter run at the Shorter Invitational at Barron Stadium in Rome March 26. The next meet for the Lakers is the Berry College Field Day Invitational April 9. ANNA HIGHTOWER — Georgia Tech (Fr., Cartersville HS) . . . pole vaulter, placed 11th (11-03.75 / 3.45m) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Georgia Tech March 25-26. The Jackets travel to Gainesville, FL for the Florida Relays JAISON MORNING — Valdosta State University (Fr., Cass HS) … Finished 15th (4:11.35) of 46 runners in the 1500 meter run March 26 during the Shorter Invitational at Barron Stadium in Rome. BLAKE PERRY — Jacksonville State (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . finished second in the 100m hurdles (15.32) at the Emory Classic March 25-26 in Atlanta. The Gamecocks compete next at the Troy University Invitational April 2. SAMANTHA PATTERSON — Jacksonville State (Soph, Woodland HS) … won the women’s pole vault at the Emory Classic in Atlanta March 25-26 with a vault of 11-03.75/3.45m. The Gamecocks compete next at the Troy University Invitational April 2. TENNIS PEYTON GOLHOFFER — Ball State (Fr., Laurel Springs Academy, Cartersville resident) . . . Gollhofer, a true freshman, won her singles match on the No. 1 line to help the Cardinals to a 4-3 win over Western Michigan March 25 as both teams opened play in the Mid-America Conference. She also teamed with Audrey Berger to win on the No. 2 doubles line against WMU. On March 27, Golhoffer partnered with Berger again to win on the No. 3 doubles line in a 5-2 home, conference win over Northern Illinois. Ball State (15-2, 2-0 MAC) has won 12 matches in a row and entertains Miami (OH) April 1 before traveling to Eastern Michigan April 3 in another pair of Mid-America Conference tilts.   • Lady Tigers tennis sweeps doubles to defeat Sonoraville

    The Adairsville girls tennis team defeated Sonoraville Tuesday night, 3-2, to lock down the No. 2 seed heading into the Region 6-AAA championship tournament at Calhoun April 12-13. Although the Phoenix won two of three singles matches, the Lady Tigers' doubles teams both won to secure the match. LADY TIGERS 3, SONORAVILLE 2 SINGLES 1 — Joanna Gallman (S) d. Kylee McCauley (A), 6-1, 6-3 2 — Abby Asbridge (A) d. Alexandria Hunt (S), 6-3, 6-4 3 — Julianna Hunt (S) d. Brantley Hughes (A), 6-0, 6-0 DOUBLES 1 — Cali Mealer/Chloe Powell (A) d. Emily Evelti/Anna Trantham (S), 6-3, 6-0 2 — McKenzie Davis/Molly Smith (A) d. Ramsey Smith/Alyssa Childs (S), 6-2, 6-0 The Lady Tigers (7-1 overall, 6-1 in 6-AAA) have one remaining regular season region match at home on Thursday. They entertain Murray County.

    The Woodland girls tennis team wrapped up its 2016 season Tuesday night with a 5-0 victory over Central Forsyth. Woodland, who missed the region playoffs by one match, defeated the Lady Bulldogs at every line. SINGLES 1 — Christy Turner won 6-0, 6-0 2 — Sadie Westberry won 6-1, 6-0 3 — Kaylee Salter won 7-5, 6-1 DOUBLES 1 — Ashlyn Walker/Deanna Dodson won 6-2, 6-2 2 — Chandler Still/Allis Gilstrap won 6-2, 7-5

  • Canes top Heritage; Cass edged by a goal; Woodland, Adairsville blanked

    CARTERSVILLE 6, HERITAGE-CATOOSA 2 The Cartersville boys’ soccer team won a key Region 7-AAAA match Tuesday night in Ringgold, defeating Heritage-Catoosa, 6-2. The Canes went on top in the 22nd minutes after an own-goal off the Generals’ keeper. Cartersville added another first half goal in the 25th minute when Houston Read scored off an assist from Blake Cheek. In the second half, Pedro Robledo put the Canes up 3-0 on a penalty kick in the 51st minute. One minute later, Grant Farmer scored off another assist from Blake Cheek for a 4-0 advantage. Gabe Gridley scored in the 57th minute from Pedro Robledo and Victor Guevara scored the Canes’ final goal off an assist from Cesar Abeja in the 72nd minute. Cartersville (9-3, 5-2 Region 7-AAAA) hosts Marietta Thursday (March 31) and plays at Woodland Friday (April 1) in non-region matches. CREEKVIEW 4, WOODLAND 0 The visiting Grizzlies scored two goals in each half, including two in the game’s 13th minute to defeat the Wildcats. Creekview improved to 7-4-2 on the season and 4-2 in sub-region 7-AAAAA-A. Woodland (0-10, 0-6) hosts Cartersville Friday. GORDON CENTRAL 5, ADAIRSVILLE 0 After battling through a scoreless first half, the Tigers fell at Gordon Central Tuesday night, 5-0. The Warriors scored two goals early in the second half to take an advantage Adairsville could not overcome. Adairsville (5-5, 2-4 in 6-AAA) plays at North Murray Thursday (March 31). RIVER RIDGE 4, CASS 3 The Colonels lost their fourth straight - all sub-region matches - at River Ridge Tuesday night, 4-3. The Knights improved to 3-10 overall and 2-4 in sub-region 7-AAAAA-A with the victory. Cass (5-6-1, 1-5 in 7-AAAAA-A) has a non-region match at Hiram Thursday.
