The 2015-16 college basketball season is down to its national championship weeks and the year for most players and teams has concluded. 'Athletes Beyond Bartow' still has two basketball players competiting for national titles, one in "The Big Dance" and the other in the National Christian Colleges national championship. Former Excel Christian Academy standout, Elijah Robinson, is a starter for Emmanuel College. The Lions are a transitioning school to NCAA D-II, so the school was ineligible for NCAA D-II tournament play this year. As a result, they are competing in the National Christian Colleges Athletic Association's post-season. The Lions, who finished second in their NCAA D-II Conference Carolinas during the regular season, won the NCCAA South Regional last weekend to reach the final eight championship tournament. ADRIAN RODGERS — Southern University (Sr., Cartersville, GA resident; Centennial HS; Maine Central Prep) . . .made a jump shot with 17 seconds left in the SWAC title game to lift Southern University to a 54-53 victory over Jackson State March 12, clinching the Jaguars' first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2013. He scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds with three assists in an 83-63 conference tournament quarterfinal game against Alabama State March 10 in Houston, TX. He followed that performance the next night with 16 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals in an 81-73 conference semifinal win over Texas Southern. In the conference championship game, with a bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line, Rodgers totaled seven points, 11 rebounds, an assist, and two steals in 35 minutes as the Jaguars edged Jackson State. Southern opens play in the NCAA Tournament’s field of 68 against Holy Cross on Wednesday (March 16) in Dayton, OH (5:40pm, TruTV). The opening round game winner advances to Spokane, WA to meet 1-seed, Oregon, March 18. ELIJAH ROBINSON — Emmanual College (Jr., Excel Christian Academy) . . . started for the Lions in their 94-52 opening round win over Columbia International University (SC) at the National Christian College Athletic Association tournament South Regional played at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. Robinson totaled seven points, two rebounds, four assists, and two steals in 16 minutes. Most of his playing time was in the first half as Emmanuel took a commanding 48-18 lead to the intermission. In the Lions NCCAA South Regional championship game against Carver Bible College (GA), Robinson contributed seven points, three rebounds, and four steals — again, as a starter playing mostly in the first half — during a 99-69 win. With the regional title, the Lions (24-5) advance to the NCCAA National Tournament where they have been made the No. 1 seed in the field of eight teams. Emmanuel opens play Wednesday (March 16) at 9:15pm against 8th-seeded Central Christian (KS). The tournament, which includes consolation rounds, continues through the national championship game on Saturday, March 19 at Grace College in Winona Lake, IN.

Adairsville rallied to score nine runs over the last three innings, including six in the bottom of the seventh, but could not overcome an early deficit in a 12-10 home loss to Armuchee Monday night. Armuchee took a 6-0 lead after 1-1/2 innings and added three more runs in the fourth to lead 9-1. The Indians also added three more runs in the top of the seventh. Adairsville scored a run in the bottom of the second to narrow the deficit to 6-1 and three in the fifth inning to pull within five runs at 9-4. The Tigers out hit Armuchee (1-8) in the contest 11-10. Drake Arp had three hits, two RBI, and scored twice to lead the Adairsville offense. Kyler Pelfrey (RBI), Orry Carter, and Justin Green had two hits each. Landon Howren added two RBI. Hayden Morrow had a double and one RBI. Hunter Hice and Lane Griffith each drove in a run. Garrett Mishoe (2 IP, 6R, 2ER, 5H, 2BB, 2K) was saddled with the pitching loss. Taylor Whitley (1.2 IP, 3ER, 1H, 7BB, 2K), Carter (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 2K), Noah O’Kelley (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 3K), and John Atkinson (1 IP, 3ER, 3H, 1BB, 1K) all pitched in relief for the Tigers. Adairsville (4-3, 1-0 6-AAA) hosts region opponents North Murray Tuesday (Mar 15) at 5:55pm and Coahulla Creek Thursday (Mar 17) at 5:55pm. The Tigers play at region rival Sonoraville on Friday (Mar 18) at 5:55pm.

It was a tough evening for local high school baseball teams Monday night. Woodland, Cass, and Excel Christian each lost region games on the road. Cartersville was scheduled to play Collins Hill, but that game was postponed until Wednesday (March 16). SEQUOYAH 4, WOODLAND 1 Sequoyah took a 4-0 lead through three innings Monday night against Woodland in Hickory Flat, then held on for a 4-1 win in the first game of a three-game, sub-region 7-AAAAA-A series between the two teams this week. The Wildcats’ only run came in the top of the seventh when Jacob Frye singled home Garett Cornett. Sequoyah pitcher, Hunter Gaddis, earned a complete-game victory scattering seven hits with no walks. He struck out five Wildcats and the only run allowed was unearned. Kolby Stansel (2.2 IP, 9H, 4ER, 1BB, 2K) took the pitching loss for Woodland. Rodolpho Romo (3.1 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB) held the Chiefs scoreless over the final innings. Frye (RBI) and Grant Robinson had two hits for the Wildcats. Hunter Reaid, Brandon Allen, and Trent Harrison had the other Woodland hits. Randy Shelton, Hayes Heard, Austin Zeitler, and Gaddis had two hits apiece for Sequoyah. Woodland (2-8) hosts Sequoyah for Game 2 of the series Wednesday at 5:55pm and the two teams will meet in Game 3 Friday at 5:55pm back at Sequoyah. ROME 3, CASS 1 The Rome Wolves won a pitching duel Monday night over the visiting Cass Colonels at Legion Field in Rome, 3-1. Rome senior Dylan Beasley tossed a complete game, one hitter for the win. He walked three and struck out ten. Austin Pruett (4 IP, 3R, 1ER, 3H, 1BB, 4K) and Cody Johnson (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB) combined on a three-hitter for the Colonels. Pruett was tagged with the loss. Rome scored two runs in the first inning and added another in the third. Cass (3-6 overall, 2-2 in sub-region 7-AAAAA-A) scored its only run in the fourth. Bailey Campbell was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Evan Collins was entered as a courtesy runner. Jordan Reed then drove Collins home with a double to left field. The Colonels entertain Rome Wednesday at 5:55pm and play the final game of the three-game series at Legion Field in Rome on Friday at 5:55pm. WHITEFIELD ACADEMY 10, EXCEL CHRISTIAN 1 Whitefield Academy pitchers Luke Persons (6 IP, 1ER, 6H, 2BB, 8K) and Russell Bell (1 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB) kept the visiting Excel Eagles off the scoreboard until the final inning in a 10-1 win. Whitefield scored six runs in the first two innings to take control. The Wolfpack added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Excel (1-6) scored in the sixth when JosephCuomo walked and moved to second base on a groundout by Wyatt Karlovich. Marco Haro singled to centerfield, advancing Cuomo to third. Then Levi Blackwell drove home the Eagles’ run with a ground ball fielder’s choice to short. Jordan Wilkie and Haro had two hits each for Excel. Trace Still (double), Blane Belisario, Darius Thrower, and Karlovich had the other ECA hits. Wilkie (1 IP, 5R, 3ER, 4H, 1BB) and Belisario (5 IP, 5ER, 6H, 3BB, 3K) pitched for Excel. Luke Miltner and Will Brogan had two hits and two RBI each for Whitefield Academy (3-6). Carter Huffman and John Schwartz had two hits and one RBI for the Wolfpack. Excel hosts St. Francis Tuesday (March 15) at 5:30pm and Fellowship Christian on Thursday (March 17) at LakePoint in Emerson.

The Cass boys’ tennis team won the Woodland Invitational Saturday and the Lady Cats finished runner up to the Kell Lady Longhorns. The Cass boys defeated Rockmart, Kell, and Cedartown twice to win the tournament title. The Woodland girls team (photo below) defeated Cedartown twice with a loss to Kell sandwiched between to reach the championship match -- again against Kell -- and finished 2-2 as the tournament runner-up. Former Cass standout, Brandon Etheridge, had a 7-for-13 week for Georgia Highlands CC, and former Hurricane, Michael Goss, had a walkoff hit for UNC-Greensboro during a six-hit week in the 'Athletes Beyond Bartow' baseball update for the week ending March 13. This week's report includes updates on 17 of the 24 current, former local high school baseball players contributing at their respective college programs across the country. BASEBALL Week ending Sunday, March 13 CLIFTON DEMPSEY — Maryville College (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . was 2-for-10 in a home weekend series against Averett. Dempsey is hitting .375 for the season with 5 RBI in 19 games. The Scots are 16-4 overall and 7-2 in the USA South Athletic Conference. Maryville College has a home game March 14 against Emory & Henry, travels to Sewanee March 15, and has a three-game conference series at Ferrum March 19-20. BO EDWARDS — University North Georgia (R-Sr., Adairsville HS) . . .started as DH for the Nighthawks March 12 in a 14-3 home conference win over UNC-Pembroke. Edwards has two doubles in 19 at bats this season in eight appearances. UNG is 13-8 overall and 6-6 in the Peach Belt Conference after taking two of three from UNC-Pembroke over the weekend. The Nighthawks play at University of West Georgia March 16 before traveling to University of South Carolina-Aiken for a three-game conference series March 18-19. BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Georgia Highlands CC (Soph., Cass HS) . . .went 7-for-13 with two walks and scored three runs in four weekend games for the Chargers. The GHC outfielder’s batting average is up to .311 with five extra base hits and six RBI. Etheridge sports a .415 on base percentage hitting usually in the two spot and has six stolen bases through 26 games. The Chargers dropped three of four over the weekend and slipped to 15-13 overall. They open conference play in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association this week with a four-game series against Darton College. The Chargers host March 15 and play three games in Albany March 18-19. TY FOWLER — Tennessee Wesleyan College (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . made a one inning relief appearance in a 14-5 non-conference win over Madonna (MI) March 7. Fowler allowed four hits and two earned runs. He has now worked five innings in three appearances on the season with a 3.60 ERA and a .286 batting average against. TWC is 14-5 overall and 5-1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. The Bulldogs entertain 7th-ranked Lindsey Wilson March 16 and host Reinhardt University March 18-19. MICHAEL GOSS — University of North Carolina-Greensboro (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . had a walk-off single in a 5-4 Spartans 10-inning victory over Illinois March 12. . . Goss was also 3-for-6 in a 20-9 win over Illinois March 11; 1-for-4 with a run scored in a 4-2 win over Coastal Carolina March 11; and 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI in an 8-4 loss at UNC-Wilmington March 9. He has a .319 batting average (15-for-47) in 11 games with a .532 slugging percentage and .418 on base percentage. UNC-Greensboro (11-5) was 3-1 on the week with a pair of wins over Illinois and another over Coastal Carolina. The Spartans host University of Maryland-Eastern Shore March 16 and a three-game series with Marist March 18-20. ROBERT HARRIS — Troy University (Jr., Adairsville HS) . . . made a relief appearance at Samford March 8 allowing five earned runs on a pair of walks and four hits as the Trojans lost 20-6. Harris, who carried a 0.87 ERA prior to the outing, has now worked 11 and 2/3 innings in seven appearances for the Trojans. Troy (10-8, 1-2 in the Sun Belt Conference) went 2-3 in games last week, winning one of three in a conference series with 16th-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette and picked up a win at Jacksonville State March 9. The Trojans play a three-game conference series at Georgia Southern March 18-20. HARRISON HATFIELD — Shorter University (Soph, Cartersville HS) . . . had two hits, scored a run, and drove in two runs in four games last week. The Hawks second baseman carries a .963 fielding percentage in 27 chances. He has a .111 batting average in 18 at bats and five starts. SU went 0-4 last week with a non-conference loss at Lincoln Memorial and was swept at home by Valdosta State. Shorter (10-13 overall, 4-8 in the Gulf South Conference) entertains Lee University in a three-game conference series March 19-20. BRADLEY HOOD — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., Cass HS) . . . the right hand pitcher was called on to retire one batter in the fifth inning March 8 in a 6-3 victory over Wallace State-Hanceville dropping his season ERA to 3.38 in eight innings and eight appearances for the Chargers. GHC was 2-4 for the week and is now 15-13 overall. Highlands begins Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association play this week with a four-game series against Darton College. The Chargers host March 15 and play three games in Albany March 18-19. TRIPP JAMIESON — Univ. of the Cumberlands (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . went 1-for-5 and scored a run in one start and a pinch hit appearance March 11 against 19th-ranked Campbellsville University. The Patriots (18-5, 2-1 in the Mid-South Conference) were 4-1 for the week and have a three-game series March 14-15 at 3rd-ranked Faulkner University before hosting conference foe, Shawnee State University for three games March 18-19. CONNOR JUSTUS — Georgia Tech (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . .went 4-for-15, scored two runs, and drove in three in a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at Florida State March 11-13. Justus now has a .393 batting average, 9 extra base hits, 12 RBI, and carries a .471 on base percentage through 15 games as the 9th-ranked Jackets shortstop. Georgia Tech (12-3, 0-3 ACC) hosts Auburn March 15 and ACC-rival, Virginia Tech, for a three-game set March 18-20. SEAN McDERMOTT — Cleveland State CC (Fr., Adairsville HS) . . . had four, two-hit games and went 9-for-15 with seven RBI in five games last week as the Cougars went 4-1. He also scored five runs. McDermott swept a doubleheader with Clark State CC and won two of three against Jackson State (TN) CC. He has a .361 batting average, one homer, and 12 RBI for the season. CSCC (11-9 overall, 4-2 Tennessee Community College Athletic Association) hosts Tusculum College March 16 for a doubleheader and plays a three-game series at Southwest Tennessee CC March 18-19. CHRIS MORTON — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., Cass HS) . . . made his fourth pitching appearance of the season March 8 in a 4-2 loss to Wallace State-Hanceville. Highlands (15-13) begins Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association play this week with a four-game series against Darton College. The Chargers host March 15 and play three games in Albany March 18-19. HUNTER OSBORN — Reinhardt University (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . the RHP is 4-0 in six starts for the Eagles. He has recorded 23 strikeouts in 32 innings pitched with a 1.13 ERA. He went 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing only two hits and five walks with seven strikeouts in a 7-2 win March 12 over Montreat College. The Eagles won two of three over Montreat and swept a doubleheader with Viterbo University during the week to improve to 20-6. RU is now 5-1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Reinhardt entertains Middle Georgia March 16 and plays at Tennessee Wesleyan College in an AAC three-game series March 18-19. MASON ROBINSON — Wallace State-Dothan CC (Soph., Woodland HS) . . . hit safely in three games of a four game series with Alabama Southern CC. Has a .197 batting average in 18 games with a homerun, six RBI, seven runs scored, and five stolen bases. WSDCC is 13-8 overall and 2-2 in the Alabama Community College Conference. The Governors entertain Black Hawk College-Moline (IL) March 15 and play a four-game series with Chattahoochee Valley CC March 17 (away) and 19 (home). TRISTON SMITH — Young Harris College (Soph., Adairsville HS) . . . had a pinch hit appearance March 8 in a 5-2 loss at Tusculum College. Smith is now 6-for-18 (.333) with four runs scored and an RBI in six appearances and four starts for the Mountain Lions. Young Harris was 2-2 for the week with both wins in conference against Flagler College. YHC (8-13 overall, 3-9 in the Peach Belt Conference) hosts Mars Hill College March 15-16 and travels to PBC-rival Francis Marion for a three-game series March 18-20. JO JO UNDERWOOD — University of North Carolina-Greensboro (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . entered as a pinch runner and catcher March 11 and entered to play third base March 12 as the Spartans won a pair of games over Illinois. Underwood also had a plate appearance in a March 9 loss at UNC-Wilmington. He has one double in eight at bats in eight games played. UNCG (11-5) plays host to University of Maryland-Eastern Shore March 16 and has a three-game home series with Marist March 18-20. CHAZ WILSON — Columbus State University (Jr., Cass HS) . . . made one relief appearance last week allowing four runs on four hits and a walk in one of the two slugfest wins over visiting Peach Belt Conference foe, Georgia College. Wilson is one of four Cougar relievers with seven or more appearances. CSU swept the March 11-13 series, winning 14-13, 18-17, and 9-0. Columbus State also pounded Tuskegee 17-1 March 9 to go 4-0 for the week. CSU (20-4, 8-1 PBC) travels to Stillman College March 15 and hosts Lander University March 18-20.

The Cartersville boys soccer team controlled the ball throughout most of the game and cruised to a 3-0 victory Friday (March 11) over Pickens. Cartersville (6-2 overall, 2-1 Region 7-AAAA) scored on goals by Osbaldo Cinderos, Pedro Robledo, and Grant Farmer. Robledo was credited with an assist on the first goal. Cesar Abeja had an assist on the Farmer goal. The Canes play Gilmer on Tuesday, March 15.

The Woodland boys soccer team lost 2-0 to visiting Kell Friday night at Wildcats' Stadium. Coach Ed Guse of the Wildcats was positive about his team's play in the loss. "Despite the negative result, the boys played a very good game," said Guse. "Our passes created some good opportunities." Woodland goalie Kristian Fisher was also credited with a solid performance. "Fisher played a strong game," noted Guse. "He anticipated well, like a sweeper, and made several important saves." "The boys are playing hard and putting in a lot of hard work," concluded Guse.

In their final tune-up weekend of non-conference play, the Georgia Highlands Chargers lost games to Triton (IL) CC 9-4 and Jefferson College (MO) 2-0 at LakePoint Sporting Community in Emerson. The Chargers had split a doubleheader with Central Alabama CC on Friday at LakePoint. In the loss to Triton, the Chargers actually out hit the Trojans, 7-6. Nick Fink had two RBI on three hits for Georgia Highlands. Fink doubled in the third inning and singled in the first and fifth frames. Triton scored eight runs through the first two innings and kept the Chargers from gaining any momentum throughout. Brandon Bell, Brandon Etheridge, Zach McCrum, and Tristan Roberts had the other Chargers’ hits. GHC starting pitcher, Casey Collins (1.1 IP, 8R, 5ER, 4H, 4BB), was saddled with the loss. Sean Wilson (4.2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB, 5K) pitched in relief for the Chargers. In the nightcap, Jefferson College scored runs in the first and fourth innings playing as the home team as part of Perfect Game’s Spring Swing. Anthony Herron (7.1 IP, 4H, 0R, 3BB, 13K) was stellar on the mound for the Vikings and earned the pitching win. Mitch Plassmeyer worked the final inning and 1/3 for a save, walking one and striking out two. Etheridge had two hits for the Chargers. McCrum, Mitch Burger, Jonathan White, and Andrew Cooley had the other GHC hits. Georgia Highlands (15-13) begins play in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Tuesday with a four game series during the week against Darton College. Game 1 of the series is at 5:30pm, then the Chargers travel to Albany for a single game Friday night at 6pm and a doubleheader on Saturday that begins at 2pm.

The Georgia Highlands softball Chargers split a GCAA conference doubleheader with Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Saturday. The Chargers won the first game 8-0, but lost Game 2, 2-1. Rebecca Meade struck out seven in the opening shutout. Natalie Pederson suffered the pitching loss in the second game, but allowed only four hits and no earned runs in three innings. Meade closed out the second game allowing no hits and recording a pair of strikeouts. Caitlin Parks was 3-for-6 at the plate with three doubles and a walk to lead the Chargers’ offense in the series. Georgia Highlands (14-22 overall, 2-4 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association) travels to Cleveland State CC (Cleveland, TN) on Tuesday for a mid-week doubleheader.

The Adairsville baseball team scored eight runs in the third and fourth innings combined to take control of the game on their way to a 10-4 win over visiting county rival Cass on Saturday. Noah O’Kelley (3IP, 1R, 0ER, 4H, 2BB, 5K) was the winning pitcher for the Tigers. Orry Carter (3 IP, 3R, 2ER, 3H, 3BB, 2K) and Garrett Mishoe (1 IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K) also pitched for Adairsville. Landon Howren, Lane Griffith, and Hayden Morrow all had two hits for the Tigers. Hunter Hice drove in two runs with a hit. Mishoe, Cole Hewatt, and Justin Green each added a hit. Jake Collum (2 IP, 6R, 3ER, 3H, 4BB, 1K) was saddled with the pitching loss for Cass. Owen Means (1.1 IP, 4R, 2ER, 2H, 1BB), Cody Johnson (1.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 3K), and Jordan Reed (1 IP, 0R, 2H, 3K) also took the mound for the Colonels. Evan Hinton was 3-for-4 and scored a run for Cass.
