Local high school coaches and athletes take annual break

July 3, 2015

Local high school teams for virtually every sport have been working out and attending camps this summer, but not this week.

The Georgia High School Association’s official summer “Dead Week” begins today (July 3) and continues through Thursday, July 9.

During the summer months between the ending of one school year and the beginning of the next, there are no restrictions on practices and competitions as long as all participation by student athletes is voluntary.

The exception to the above GHSA policy is the annual “Dead Week.”

During the state-wide, mandatory “Dead Week,” GHSA member schools are prohibited from participating in even voluntary workouts, camps, and/or clinics.  Even weight training and those competitions are prohibited each year during the week in which the Fourth of July falls.

GHSA’s “Dead Week” is the one week each year when weight rooms, gymnasiums, and fields are closed and all organized team activities are prohibited.

Coaches and athletes alike use the extended holiday period to relax with their families and friends.  It also gives everyone a well deserved break and a chance to refresh.

High school coaches and their team members may pick back up with more summer workouts and athletic activities as early as Friday, July 10.
