This week's updates on local athletes and their contributions this past week at the professional and collegiate levels.





UFL


VIC BEASLEY, JR. — Arlington Renegades (10th-yr. pro; Clemson; Adairsville HS) … made one solo tackle this past Sunday in the Renegades’ 17-9 loss at the Houston Roughnecks. Arlington has started the season 0-4 and hosts the San Antonio Brahmas on Saturday night.



BASKETBALL SUPER LEAGUE


A.J. MOSBY, JR. — Sudbury Five (6th-yr. pro; Alcorn State; Cartersville HS) … averaged 25 points, 3.5 steals, five assists, and four rebounds in a three-game series last week at the Newfoundland Rogues. The Five dropped two of the three games and have fallen to fifth place with a 17-13 record. Sudbury plays at the KW titans on Saturday night and at the Windsor Express on Sunday afternoon.



MiLB


MASON BARNETT — Northwest Arkansas Naturals (3rd-yr. pro; Kansas City Royals Double-A affiliate; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … made a five inning start and grabbed his first pitching win of the season this past Thursday in a 7-1 victory over the Midland Rockhounds. The right-handed pitcher allowed just one earned run on two hits and one walk while striking out ten. The Naturals (6-8) have a six-game series on Tuesday through Sunday at the Tulsa Drillers.



LOGAN MARTIN — Columbia Fireflies (2nd-yr. pro; Kansas City Royals Single-A affiliate; Kentucky; Cartersville HS) …  earned a four-inning save on Tuesday as the Fireflies blanked the visiting Augusta GreenJackets 8-0. Martin allowed no runs on two hits and one walk. He struck out four. The Columbia/Augusta series continues through Sunday.



ANTHONY SEIGLER — Somerset Patriots (7th-yr. pro; NY Yankees Double-A affiliate; Cartersville HS) … in four home starts last week against Hartford, he was 3-for-13 with one walk and one RBI in four home starts last week at second base. The Patriots (7-8) play at six-game series this week at the Reading Fightin’ Phils. 



PGA CHAMPIONS TOUR


JASON BOHN — Champions Senior Tour (Acworth, 51, 32-yr. pro; Cartersville CC member) … carded an opening round 66 last Friday but after a Saturday rainout dropped to a tie for 48th on Sunday with a 76 at the Invited Celebrity Classic in Irving, Texas. The tournament was conducted on the par-71, 6900-yard course at Las Colinas Country Club. The next Champions Tour event is this weekend in Duluth, Georgia at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic.



TENNIS


EMILY BUSH — Young Harris College (So., Cartersville HS) … won her Line 2 singles match 6-3, 6-2 but dropped a Line 1 doubles set with partner Meghna Mallath on Monday (April 15) as the Mountain Lions won at the University of North Greenville 5-2. This past Saturday, Bush won her Line 2 singles match 6-3, 6-2 in YHC’s 7-0 win over Chowan University. Young Harris (11-10) hosts Bartow College on Monday and will play in the Conference Carolinas Tournament on Friday through Sunday.


EMILY SURCEY — Samford University (Jr., Cass HS) … in action at the Southern Conference Championship Tournament in Chattanooga, Surcey won singles matches at Line 2 as the Bulldogs beat Chattanooga 4-1 but lost to Furman. She was 1-1 in doubles sets with partner  Grace Keller. Samford’s season ends with a 10-12 record.


BRYCE VAN ORDER — Piedmont University (Sr., Woodland HS) … won his Line 2 singles match 6-2, 6-1 and won a Line 3 doubles set with partner Kody Dills as the Lions blanked visiting Belhaven University, 9-0. Piedmont (18-6) will play in the Collegiate Conference of the South Tournament in Chattanooga on Thursday through Saturday.



TRACK AND FIELD


STEPHEN SMITH — Kennesaw State University (Sr., Cass HS) … placed eighth in the pole vault competition at the University of Kentucky Jim Green Invitational. Smith cleared 15 feet, 3-¾ inches. The Owls head to the University of North Florida East Coast Relays in Jacksonville on Friday and Saturday.


ERIC TOVIAVE — Belmont University (So., Cartersville HS) … placed 25th in the 400 meter hurdles (55.90) at the Georgia Tech Invitational this past weekend. The Bruins are set to compete at the Music City Challenge on Friday and Saturday.



GOLF


ANDERSON McCARY — Birmingham Southern College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … placed 87th with rounds of 88-88 as the Panthers finished 18th of 18 teams at the Memphis, Tennessee Cochran Collegiate. BSC will play in the Southern Athletic Association Championship Tournament on Friday through Sunday in Dickson, Tennessee.


BRODY TIDWELL — Georgia State University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … was entered as an individual competitor and placed 72nd with rounds of 76-80-73—228 at the Wofford Invitational April 15-16 at Catawba Country Club in Newton, North Carolina. GSU plays in the Sun Belt Conference Championship on Monday through Thursday in Madison, Mississippi.



SOFTBALL


KILEY ARNOLD — University of West Alabama (Fr., Cartersville HS) … was entered as a pinch runner and scored in a 7-5 win this past Saturday at home against Alabama-Huntsville. The Tigers (29-16, 13-14 Gulf South Conference) play at Miles College on Wednesday and at Shorter University on Saturday and Sunday for a three-game conference series.


HAYLEE DISHMON — Georgia Highlands College (Fr., Cass HS) …  in the Chargers’ four games last week, Dishmon was 6-for-13 at the plate with one RBI. She scored four runs and stole seven bases. GHC lost two games to ABAC and split a doubleheader with South Georgia State. The Chargers (14-27, 11-11) will play home-and-home doubleheaders with Chattanooga State CC on Monday and Wednesday and will host Gordon State College for a Saturday doubleheader.


ANSLEY EVANS — Reinhardt University (Jr., Woodland HS) … started four of the Eagles’ six wins last week over Montreat, Milligan, and Bluefield. She was 4-for-10 with two walks and seven RBIs. Evans scored three runs and stole one base. Reinhardt (34-8, 23-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) has doubleheaders on Tuesday at Johnson University (Tenn.) and Union College (Ky.).


MEGAN GREGORY — Campbell University (Fr., Adairsville HS) … made a 1-⅔ inning middle relief appearance this past Saturday in a 6-3 loss at UNC Wilmington. She allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit, two walks, and one hit batsman. The Camels (27-18-1, 16-5 Coastal Athletic Association) host a doubleheader with Queens University on Wednesday and have a three game conference series with North Carolina A&T at home on Friday through Sunday.


SADYE JOHNSON — University of North Georgia (Jr., Adairsville HS) … drew a walk in a pinch-hitter appearance this past Saturday during a 14-5 win at Lander University. 4th-ranked UNG (42-8, 20-3 Peach Belt Conference) will host the conference quarterfinals on Friday through Sunday.


ERYN LEE — Reinhardt University (So., Cass HS) … went 2-for-7 with one walk and one RBI as the Eagles completed a 6-0 week with doubleheader wins over Montreat, Milligan, and Bluefield. Lee also scored three runs. Reinhardt (34-8, 23-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) has doubleheaders on Tuesday at Johnson University (Tenn.) and Union College (Ky.).


RACHAEL LEE — Gulf Coast State CC (So., Cass HS) … went 1-for-2 with one walk this past Saturday in a 5-1 home win over Pensacola State. The 12th-ranked Commodores (37-12, 11-6 FSSAA) play at Chipola College on Tuesday, host No. 2 Northwest Florida State CC on Thursday, and visit Tallahassee CC on Saturday.


AVA PERKINS — Lee University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … made one start and appeared in both games this past Saturday. She was 1-for-2 with two walks, one double, two RBIs, and scored two runs in wins over visiting Delta State University.  Lee (19-23, 13-14 Gulf South Conference) has a three-game series at the University of West Florida on Saturday and Sunday.


ALEXIS WOODS — Tennessee State University (Fr., Cass HS) … went 1-for-9 with two walks and two runs scored last week in four starts. The Tigers lost at Middle Tennessee and won three home games with Western Illinois. Tennessee State (23-20, 14-7 Ohio Valley Conference) plays a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday at Southern Indiana.



BASEBALL


DREW BILLINGS — Trinity Baptist College (Fr., Woodland HS) … made pitching appearances at Thomas University and at home against Bob Jones University last week totaling 2-⅔ innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Billings was charged with a loss at Thomas. The Eagles (18-23, 7-2 NCCCA South) have a four-game series at Toccoa Falls College on Friday and Saturday.


CURT BONNER — LaGrange College (So., Cartersville HS) … went 0-for-4 in a home start and loss last Saturday to Piedmont University. The Panthers host Maryville College (Tenn.) for a three-game series on Friday through Sunday.


CADEN CARROLL — Kennesaw State University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … pitched 1-⅔ innings of relief this past Saturday in a 15-5 loss at Queens University. Carroll entered in the seventh inning and allowed four earned runs on five hits and one walk. He struck out one. KSU (22-18, 12-6) has a three-game conference series at Bellarmine University in Louisiville on Friday through Sunday.


ELLIOTT EASTIN — Covenant College (R-Fr., Cartersville HS) … pitched two inning of relief on Tuesday, April 16 in a 7-5 home win over Sewanee. He allowed three earned runs on three hits and recorded one strikeout. He also had one pinch-hitting appearance last Saturday in a 6-5 home loss to Maryville College (Tenn.). The Scots (14-23, 5-10) have a three-game conference series at Berea College (Ky.) on May 2 and 3.


COLIN EATON — Gordon State College (So., Cartersville HS) … made a four-inning pitching start with no decision last Saturday at home in an eventual 9-6 win over ABAC. Eaton yielded five runs (one earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts. The Highlanders (28-19, 14-7 GCAA) host South Georgia State on Thursday and visit Georgia Highlands College on Saturday.


KENNY JINKS — Wheeling University (R-Sr., Woodland HS) … made a six-inning start last Saturday and picked up the pitching win in an 18-7 victory at Fairmont State University. Jinks, now 4-3, gave up five earned runs on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts. The Cardinals (21-20, 11-13 Mountain East Conference) host four games with Salem University on Saturday and Sunday.


COLT McKIBBEN — Lee University (So., Cartersville HS) … struggled in a brief start at the University of North Georgia on April 16 yielding five earned runs on three walks and two hits. He faced only seven batters and was tagged with the loss in a 21-2 defeat. The Flames (34-12, 21-6) visit the Universith of West Florida on Friday and Saturday for a three-game series.


SAM MELTON — Rockingham CC (So., Cartersville HS) … went 1-for-3 with a double and scored one run in a three-game home-and-home series with Surry CC. He had one at-bat in each game. Rockingham (19-29, 9-14) has a home doubleheader on Saturday with New River CC.


DREW ROTHSCHILD — Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (So., Cartersville HS) … went 8-for-12 including two home runs, a double, and five walks in four games last week with Gordon State College. He also scored five runs. The Stallions (17-25, 9-11 GCAA) visit Andrew College on Thursday and play at South Georgia State College on Saturday.


TREY SCOTT — Alabama A&M University (Jr., Cass HS) … made pitching appearances at home against Faulkner University and on the road at Florida A&M last week totaling six innings. Scott allowed four earned runs on three hits and six walks. He struck out seven. He was credited with the pitching win in the Bulldogs’ 10-3 win over Faulkner. AAMU (9-30, 5-13 SWAC) hosts Bethune-Cookman in a three-game conference series on Friday through Sunday.


PHILIP SCHILTZ — Coastal Alabama South CC (Fr., Cartersville HS) … tossed a six-inning, complete-game in the Coyotes’ 9-0 win this past Saturday at Shelton State CC. He struck out four and walked one facing 23 batters. Coastal South (23-21, 20-8 ACCC) plays a home-and-home four-game series with Snead State CC on Thursday and Saturday. 


SCOTTY SMITH — Covenant College (Jr., Woodland HS) … made a strong 7-⅔ inning start at home last Saturday but received no decision as the Scots fell to Maryville College (Tenn.) 6-5. Scott allowed three earned runs (five total) on six hits, two walks, and one hit batsman facing 36 batters. Covenant (14-23, 5-10 Collegiate Conference of the South) has the weekend off before traveling to Berea College (Ky.) next Thursday and Friday for a three-game series.


STEVEN SPELL — Young Harris College (Grad student, Cass HS) … in five games last week, Spell was 4-for-19 at the plate with a double, two walks, two sac flies, and five RBIs. The Mountain Lions, who have won 12 straight and are ranked No. 10 nationally, had wins over Carson-Newman, Tuisculum, and a three-game sweep of Emmanuel University. YHC (37-9, 21-6 Conference Carolinas) closes out the regular season schedule on Friday and Saturday with three games at Belmont Abbey College.


KADEN STEPHENSON — Piedmont University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … was 0-for-2 in pinch hitting appearances last week for the Lions. Piedmont (22-12, 9-3 CCS) has a three-game series at home this weekend with Huntingdon College.


PRESTON WELCHEL — Cumberland University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … in four games last week, Welchel was 5-for-14 at the plate with a homer, three walks, four runs scored, and six RBIs. The Phoenix beat Milligan University but lost three to 4th-ranked University of the Cumberlands. CU (21-25, 4-11 Mid-South Conference) hosts Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) on Friday and Saturday for a three-game conference series.


COHEN WILBANKS — Georgia Gwinnett College (Jr., Cartersville HS) … made three starts and four game appearances last week as the NAIA 3rd-ranked Grizzlies went 4-0. Wilbanks was 5-for-10 at the plate and drove in nine runs with five doubles and three walks raising his season batting average to .385. GGC (39-6, 5-0 Continental Athletic Conference) hosts three games with Fisher College and University on Friday and Saturday.


JORDAN WILKIE — Augusta University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … saw action defensively at first base this past Friday in a 9-8 win at Georgia Southwestern State. The Jaguars (23-22, 12-12 Peach Belt Conference) visit St. Augustine for a three-game conference series at Flagler College on Friday through Sunday.
