Colonels edge Canes; Wildcats blank Titans
Cass junior pitcher Rachael Lee tossed a complete-game, five-hitter Tuesday evening to help lead the Colonels to a 2-1 Region 7-AAAAA win at Cartersville. The win keeps Cass in third place in the region — one game behind Woodland. The victory also secured a state playoff berth and the season series against the Hurricanes. The two teams split a region doubleheader earlier in the season. Cass took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Eryn Lee walked, advanced to third on an infield error, and scored when Ansley Hight grounded out. The Colonels added a second run and went up 2-0 in the fourth inning on a Haylee Dishmon RBI double. That would be enough run support for the Cass pitcher Lee, who struck out three and walked only one. Cartersville’s run scored in the bottom of the fourth following a single by Kiley Arnold. McKinley Chada (7 IP, 2R, 1ER, 5H,1BB, 3K) took the pitching loss despite a solid performance. In addition to Arnold, the Canes got hits from Mikey Lewis, AnnaKate McElhaney, Ava Perkins, and Madison Lingerfield (double).
Cartersville (6-17, 4-8) hosts a region doubleheader with Blessed Trinity Thursday, weather permitting. The Canes and Titans are currently tied for the final playoff spot in the region. Cass (13-6, 8-4) hosts a doubleheader with region-leading Calhoun Wednesday and will play in the Chattanooga SCORE Tournament Friday and Saturday.
WILDCATS BLANK TITANS
Woodland pitcher Lainey Baker scattered three hits and one walk, tossed a complete game, and struck out 10 Tuesday night as the Wildcats blanked Blessed Trinity in Roswell, 6-0. The win keeps Woodland in second place in the Region 7-AAAAA standings behind Calhoun and earned the Lady Cats their fifth straight state playoffs berth. Michiah Hicks had a perfect day at the plate. The outfielder was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and one RBI. She also scored two runs. Ansley Evans followed with three hits including a double for the Wildcats. She also drove in a run and scored three times. Hannah Miller had two hits and one RBI. Lainey Baker and Dylynn Motes added the other Woodland base hits. The loss drops Blessed Trinity to 5-9 overall. The Titans are 4-8 in region play.
Woodland (14-6, 8-3) plays a region doubleheader at Hiram Thursday and will play in the Chattanooga SCORE Invitational Friday and Saturday.
TIGERS SHUTOUT AT COAHULLA CREEK The Colts scored at least one run in each of the first four innings and pitcher Sophia Voyles shutout the Adairsville offense as Coahulla Creek won the Region 6-AAA contest, 6-0, Tuesday in Whitfield County. Voyles — who also homered — scattered three hits and three walks in a complete-game effort. She struck out eleven. Tatum Poe added two hits for the Colts. Sadye Johnson, Chloe Souders, and Chelsea Batea (double) had the hits for Adairsville. Taylor Rhoades (3 IP, 4R, 2ER, 4H, 2BB, 4K) and Victoria O’Neal (3 IP, 2R, 1ER, 2H, 3BB, 6K) split the pitching chores for the Tigers. Coahulla Creek improved to 19-3 overall and 6-3 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (10-7, 4-6) plays next Tuesday at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe.
