Friday night hoops roundup: Cartersville teams sweep LaGrange
The Cartersville girls and boys teams won Region 5-AAAA home games Friday night at the Storm Center to highlight action involving local teams.
CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 37, LAGRANGE 34
The Lady Canes earned a Region 5-AAAA victory Friday night at the Storm Center over visiting LaGrange, 37-34.
Cartersville led 13-11 after one quarter and 21-20 at the intermission before LaGrange tied the game by the end of the third quarter, 28-28.
Naijah Evans led the Hurricanes and all scorers in the game with 14 points. Miya Moore followed with six points. Lehla Thomas added four points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Alexia Henderson and Cio Seigler also scored four each. Kiera Millne finished with three and Ariana Cochran added two points.
LaGrange was led by Corriah Williams with nine points. Madison Coverson scored eight and Kylah Campbell added six points.
The Lady Canes (9-12, 2-7) travel to Tyrone to take on Sandy Creek Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
CARTERSVILLE BOYS 66, LAGRANGE 65 The Hurricanes (7-10, 3-6) outlasted visiting LaGrange Friday night at the Storm Center, 66-65, in Region 5-AAAA action. Kolbe Benham made two free throws with three-tenths of a second remaining to lift to Hurricanes to a one-point win. Benham was fouled on an 80-foot desperation shot attempt. Benham had eight of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter. Kyler Johnson, Kam Callahan and Micah Tart each finished with a dozen points for the Canes. Cartersville led 13-12 after the opening eight minutes, 33-30 at halftime, and were up 48-43 heading into the fourth quarter. The loss drops LaGrange to 18-4 on the season and 5-4 in Region 5-AAAA. The Canes play at Sandy Creek Saturday at 4 p.m. VILLA RICA 72, CASS GIRLS 58 The Cass girls dropped a 72-56 decision Friday night at 4th-ranked Villa Rica in Region 7-AAAAA action. Villa Rica led 10-7 after one quarter, 31-17 at halftime, and 51-33 at the end of the third quarter.
Aliyah Hindsman led the Lady Wildcats with 21 points. Dekyia Cofield followed with 18 and Kyndal Coleman scored 13 for Villa Rica (19-4, 10-4). Londaisha Smith scored 21 for the Lady Colonels. Claire Davis posted 18. Taryn Callahan was next for Cass with eight points. Ariana Hames finished with five. Keara McDaniel scored three and Justice Bennett added one point. Cass (16-8, 7-8) finishes the regular season at home Tuesday against Hiram at 6 p.m. HIRAM 43, WOODLAND GIRLS 26 The Lady Cats lost at Hiram Friday night, 43-26. Hiram led 11-9 after one period, 17-15 at halftime, and 27-24 through three quarters before pulling away for a 17-point victory. Imani Smith, Camryn O’Neil, and Erial Owens led the host Lady Hornets with 12, 11, and 10 points, respectively. Jordan Thompson paced Woodland with 10 points. Carli Clymer followed with eight. Abigail Taylor scored four. Ansley Evans and Morgan Cooper added two points apiece. Woodland (4-18, 2-12) hosts Carrollton Tuesday and Villa Rica Friday night. Both games are 6 p.m. starts. LAKEVIEW-FORT OGLETHORPE 51, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 43 The Lady Tigers stood toe-to-toe with the host Warriors Friday night in the first half, but were outscored 16-9 in the third quarter before falling 51-43 in a Region 6-AAA game in Fort Oglethorpe. The game was tied 6-6 after one quarter and was knotted at 20 at halftime. The host Lady Warriors took a 36-29 lead through three quarters on their way to an eight-point win. Millijah Williams and Christina Collins led LFO (7-15, 4-10) with 20 and 15 points, respectively. Adairsville was led by Alexa Childers with 15 points. Haley Stiles followed with 14. Yatorrean Hale scored six points. Ji’Leyah Mitchell scored four. Autumn Henderson and Alexa Varner added two points each. Adairsville (5-17, 2-12) hosts Pickens Saturday at 4 p.m. and Haralson County Tuesday night at 6 p.m. before traveling to Murray County next Friday for a 7 p.m. tip. HIRAM 63, WOODLAND BOYS 31 Hiram (17-6, 11-3) led 9-6 after one quarter Friday night at Woodland, 32-13 at halftime, and 50-20 after three periods. Woodland (2-21, 0-14) hosts Carrollton Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. and entertains Villa Rica Friday night at 7 p.m. MT. ZION- CARROLL 60, EXCEL CHRISTIAN BOYS 55 Kendrick Brumlow led Mt. Zion-Carroll with 20 points Friday night as the visiting Eagles top the Excel Christian Eagles, 60-55, at The Nest. J.D. Hindsman and Darius Hudgins scored 14 points each for Mt. Zion. Mt. Zion-Carroll led 15-13 after one quarter, 31-27 at the intermission, and 46-36 by the end of the third quarter. Rayshawn Womack led ECA with 18 points. Rashard Doyal followed with 15. Jakaden Barkley contributed eight points. Jake Murray and Brenden Quillin added six each for the host Eagles. Excel Christian Academy (3-19, 2-10) steps out of Region 6-A Saturday to challenge Class AAAAAAA Lassiter in Marietta. VILLA RICA 69, CASS BOYS 64 The Cass boys suffered a 69-64 Region 7-AAAAA loss Friday night at Villa Rica. The host Wildcats led 17-16 after one period and 35-28 at the intermission before the Colonels caught them at 51-each heading into the final eight minutes. Phillip Zachary and Jai Ackey paced Villa Rica (16-7, 7-7) with 19 points each. C.J. Pipkin led Cass with 20 points. Zaylan Chaney was next with 15. Andrew Glaze scored 12 and Jordan Ford 11 for the Colonels. Alfred Washington contributed four and Braxton Benham two. Cass (14-10, 9-6) remains in sole possession of fourth place in Region 7-AAAAA and will close out the regular season Tuesday at home against Hiram. LAKEVIEW-FORT OGLETHORPE 51, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 39 The Adairsville boys took a 35-29 advantage into the fourth quarter Friday night, but got outscored 22-4 in the period for a 51-39 loss at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. The Tigers led 15-7 after one quarter and 27-11 at halftime. Brent Bowman led LFO (18-4, 11-3) with 20 points. Jamichael Davis followed with 13 for the Warriors. Savaun Henderson led Adairsville with 13 points. T. J. Printup scored 10. Conner Crunkleton contributed five points. Tucker Deams, Courtney Slocum, and Jaxon Welchel finished with three apiece. Malachi Gardner added two for the Tigers. Adairsville (8-13, 5-9) entertains Pickens Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and Haralson County Tuesday night in a 7:30 p.m. start before traveling to Murray County Friday night at 8:30 p.m. to close out the regular season.
