Friday's Football Roundup: Colonels, Canes, and 'Cats collect wins

For the second Friday night in a row, all four local high school football teams were in action with Cass, Cartersville, and Woodland coming away with non-region victories.
Cass defeated visiting Adairsville, 27-17. Cartersville extended its record-setting, regular season win streak with a 28-17 win at home over Class AAAAAAA West Forsyth; and Woodland improved to 2-0 with a 43-17 rout of the visiting Osborne Cardinals.
CASS OUTLASTS ADAIRSVILLE, 27-17
The Cass Colonels won the 55th meeting with the Adairsville Tigers Friday night at home, 27-17.
Kicker Kaleb Speights capped a pair of Cass 10-play drives early in the first half. His first field goal was from 23 yards in the first quarter and his 28-yarder gave the Colonels a 6-0 lead with 5:49 remaining in the second quarter.
Adairsville kicker Emanuel Lopez cut the Cass lead in half with a 28-yard field goal on the Tigers’ next possession. A long, reverse-pass play with slot receiver Evan Sanders throwing to wide receiver Dylan Matthews accounted for most of the yardage in the seven-play drive.
Cass marched back down the field on their next possession to take a 13-3 lead to the intermission. The Colonels capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Devin Henderson to Zay Jackson with 0:44 left in the half.
Adairsville twice cut the Cass lead to three points in the second half.
Eli Agnew had a 48-yard run for the Tigers that set up Charlie Ray’s two-yard touchdown run to open the second half. The drive covered 80 yards in seven plays and left Adairsville trailing 13-10 with 9:10 to play in the third quarter.
Following the ensuing kickoff, Cass freshman quarterback Devin Henderson found sophomore Connor Ray streaking down the left sideline for an 80-yard touchdown pass. Speights’ successful PAT put Cass back ahead 20-10 with 8:56 remaining in the quarter.
Just over a minute later, Adairsville made the score 20-17.
Quarterback Conner Crunkelton connected with Courtney Slocum on a 68-yard touchdown pass.
The final scoring drive of the night started late in the third quarter for the Colonels and finished in the first 13 seconds of the final period.
The 66-yard drive took eight plays and was culminated on a 15-yard touchdown throw from Henderson to C.J. Pipkin.
Henderson finished 11-for-14 passing for 262 yards and three touchdowns.
Adairsville (1-1) enters a bye week to prepare for their Region 6-AAA opener at home September 25 against Murray County.
Cass (2-0) travels to Class AAAAAA Sequoyah next Friday for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
CARTERSVILLE DEFEATS WEST FORSYTH, EXTENDS REGULAR SEASON WIN STREAK TO 60
The Cartersville Hurricanes improved to 2-0 Friday night at Weinman Stadium and extended their state-record, regular season winning streak to 60 games with a 28-17 win over the West Forsyth Wolverines.
The Canes carried a 21-17 lead to halftime, but trailed 17-14 midway through the second quarter.
Quarterback Stratton Tripp connected with Devonte Ross for an 11-yard touchdown pass that gave the Hurricanes a 7-0 lead. Evan Slocum threw to Ross for a 41-yard score with 0:19 remaining in the first quarter; and Quante Jennings scored on a second quarter, five-yard run.
West Forsyth’s Daba Fofana scored on a two-yard run to tie the game 7-7 in the first quarter.
Wolverines’ quarterback Keegan Stover hooked up with Ashton Van Horn for a 10-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to tie the score 14-14; and Alex Wilson nailed a 50-yard field goal for West Forsyth with just over six minutes remaining in the first half. That kick gave the Wolverines a short-lived 17-14 lead.
Cartersville managed the only scoring play of the second half as the two defenses held their ground.
Jennings caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Slocum in the third quarter for the Canes’ final margin, 28-17.
West Forsyth slips to 1-1 on the season. Cartersville (2-0) hosts Alexander next Friday at Weinman Stadium.
WOODLAND RUNS PAST OSBORNE IN HOME OPENER
The Woodland Wildcats moved to 2-0 on the season Friday night by defeating the visiting Osborne Cardinals 43-17. Running back Asa James and quarterback Johnathan Thomas ran for two touchdowns each for the Wildcats. James also caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Thomas in the third quarter that built a 35-11 lead at the time. James scored Woodland’s first two touchdowns in the first period on runs of 11- and 4-yards. The Wildcats converted one of a pair of two-point conversion attempts for an early 14-0 lead. Osborne’s Lawrence Isham connected with Joshua Horton for a 46-yard touchdown strike that cut Woodland’s lead to 14-8 midway through the first quarter. Thomas broke loose on a pair of long scoring plays in the game. His 69-yard scamper gave Woodland a 20-8 lead with 6:21 remaining in the first quarter, but Osborne would narrow the margin to 20-11 on a 35-yard field goal by Eric Hartbarger. Eli Jernigan scored on a 12-yard run midway through the second quarter as the Wildcats took a 27-11 lead at halftime. Osborne’s final touchdown was scored by Larry Williams on a 4-yard run in the third quarter. The play capped an 11-play drive for the Cardinals and narrowed Woodland’s lead to 35-17. Thomas later reeled off his second long touchdown run to close out the scoring. This time the quarterback burst into the open for an 82-yard jaunt down the left sideline late in the third quarter. Thomas finished 4-for-7 passing for 156 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 159 yards and two touchdowns on just three attempts. James rushed for 72 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. He also had the 87 yards receiving with a touchdown. Jimmy Davis totaled 18 yards rushing. Harlin Morris added 17 yards on the ground and Noah Tidwell rushed for 15 yards. J.T. Hampton had a 53-yard reception and Jonah Plott hauled in a 16-yard catch. Osborne started its 2020 campaign 0-1. Woodland (2-0) enters a bye week before traveling to North Springs September 25 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
