The Adairsville Tigers lost a 9-0 Region 6-AAA decision Tuesday night at Ringgold. Ringgold hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning and scored four runs in the frame to take an early lead and never looked back. Pitcher Ross Norman tossed a complete-game shutout for Ringgold and struck out 13 without issuing a walk. Adairsville managed just two hits in their loss. Chris Roper and Baxter Ryan had one single each. 5th-ranked Ringgold improved to 17-5 overall and 7-0 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (11-8, 5-2) hosts Ringgold in a rematch Thursday at 5:55 p.m. and will entertain Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe at 5:55 p.m. on Friday.

In the opening game of a four-game conference series with Gordon State Tuesday, the Georgia Highlands baseball team lost to the host Highlanders in Barnesville, 14-2. Gordon State took control early with six runs in the bottom of the first inning and added six more in the fourth on their way to a 12-run win. Declan Dun (3 IP, 6R, 2ER, 5H, 3BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for the Chargers. Jeremy Gay (1 IP, 6ER, 5H, 1BB), Garett Sagro (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 3BB), and Barrett Eldridge (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB) worked one inning each on the mound. Ryan Wideman and Austin Slate had two hits each for the Chargers. Parker Poteet contributed a double and two GHC RBIs. Trippe Moore, Jay Murdock, Davis Newman, and Chris Buchanan added one hit apiece. Gordon State (15-20, 4-5) and Georgia Highlands (25-12, 5-4) continue their series Thursday and Friday with the Chargers hosting a single game Thursday at 2 p.m. and a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m.

Georgia Highlands softball dropped a pair of Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association games to visiting Georgia Military College Tuesday at Stars Field. The Bulldogs clipped the Chargers 9-8 in the first game and won the second game 10-9. In the opener, Georgia Military raced to an early 8-0 lead after two innings and held off the Chargers late. In Game 2, the two offenses traded blows early with the Bulldogs leading 7-6 after the first three innings. The teams matched runs down the stretch allowing GMC to escape with a doubleheader sweep in two tightly contested games. Although Georgia Military prevailed on the scoreboard, the Chargers outhit the Bulldogs in both games and had 25 hits on the day compared to 21 by the visitors. Georgia Highlands split the doubleheader pitching duties among a trio of hurlers. Emma Vietch totaled 8-⅓ innings on the day — all in middle relief — allowing two earned runs (three total runs) on three hits and three walks. Vietch fanned five in the two games. Jaycie Hand (3 IP, 9R, 7ER, 11H, 1BB) and Rena Fraga (2.2 IP, 7R, 4ER, 7H, 1BB) made the two starts in the circle for the Chargers. Brady Tharp, Audrey Johnson, and Madison Dennis led the Chargers' hitting with four hits each. Tharp included two home runs and four RBIs. Johnson homered and doubled with four RBIs while the four hits by Dennis included a solo home run. Jordan Blair (two RBIs) and Abigail Lathrop (double) finished the two games with three hits each. Allison Deweese contributed a pair of hits including a solo home run. Avery Fisher also had two hits including one home run and three RBIs. Malone Aldridge, Annsley Todd, and Taylor Justice added one hit apiece on the day. Georgia Highlands (14-20, 8-4 GCAA) hosts a non-conference doubleheader Friday at 2 p.m. with Spartanburg Methodist.

MiLB ANTHONY SEIGLER — Somerset Patriots (AA affiliate, NY Yankees; 6th yr. pro; Cartersville HS) … a first-round draft selection and 23rd pick overall by the New York Yankees in 2018, Seigler has been promoted to the Double-A Somerset (New Jersey) Patriots of the Eastern League. Injuries limited the now 23-year-old to just 95 games over his first three professional seasons, most notably a fractured kneecap in 2019 that cut that year short before he returned for an abbreviated 2021 campaign in with the Hudson Valley Renegades. In 2022, Seigler hit .288 in 116 official at-bats between Tampa and Hudson Valley. He hit seven home runs and had 45 RBIs with a .405 on-base percentage. The Patriots open the 2023 season Thursday at home in a three-game series with the Harrisburg Senators. April 1, 2023 Georgia Highlands College baseball won both games of a doubleheader Saturday with visiting East Georgia State CC. The Chargers won the first game 2-1 and took the second matchup of the day, 6-1. Trey Baker (6 IP, 1ER, 5H, 2BB, 6K) was the winning pitcher in the opener. Chandler Anderson (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1K) closed out the seventh inning to earn a save. Parker Poteet hit a solo home run for the Chargers' first run in the bottom of the second inning. Following a walk and sacrifice bunt, Trippe Moore drove in another run with a line drive single into center field. East Georgia cut the lead in half with a single run in the fourth inning, but the Georgia Highlands’ pitching took over from there. In the second win, the Chargers outhit the Bobcats nine to four in a 6-1 victory. Zayd Branningan doubled twice and drove in one run. Ryan Wideman had a pair of doubles and Poteet finished with two hits. Mitchell Walker contributed a double with two RBIs. Austin Slate had one hit, a sac fly, and two RBIs. Chris Buchanan added a hit and Moore drove home a run with a sacrifice fly. Zach Valentine (4 IP, 1ER, 3H, 0BB, 2K) earned the pitching win for the Chargers. Adrian Roman (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 4K) closed out the final three frames in shutout fashion. East Georgia slipped to 17-17 overall and 3-5 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association with Saturday’s losses. Georgia Highlands (25-11, 5-3) returns to action Tuesday at Gordon College and will host three games with the Highlanders Friday and Saturday.

Georgia Highlands outhit visiting East Georgia State thirteen to six Friday evening and defeated the Bobcats 7-4 to even their current series at one game each. East Georgia won the series opener in Swainsboro on Wednesday, 2-1. The Bobcats opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. The Chargers matched that run in the second. After two scoreless frames, Georgia Highlands took a 4-1 lead in the fifth on a three-run home run by Hunter Sapp. From there the Chargers added single runs in the next three innings to build a 7-1 advantage. East Georgia hit a two-out, three-run home run in the top of the ninth making the score 7-4 but reliever Davis Mortland got a strikeout to end the game. Oliver Wood (8 IP, 3ER, 5H, 1BB, 2K) made the pitching start for the Chargers and collected the win. The Walton High School product left in the ninth inning after a walk and a single. Mortland struck out the side after entering in the ninth but did allow the Bobcats’ home run. Georgia Highlands (23-11, 3-3 GCAA) and East Georgia (17-15, 3-3) complete their four-game series Saturday with a doubleheader at LakePoint starting at 1 p.m.

The Woodland girls' track and field team won the 2023 Bartow County Championship Meet Thursday evening at Cass High School's Cochran Stadium while the boys’ title was shared by Cartersville and Woodland. The Woodland girls scored 90 points followed by Cartersville 81.5, Cass 64.5, and Adairsville with 29. The Cartersville and Woodland boys tied with 89 points each. Cass was next with 61 points followed by Adairsville with 33. The Woodland Wildcats, Cartersville Purple Hurricanes, and Adairsville Tigers all collected region wins Friday night. Woodland blew out Hiram 20-5 and completed a three-game sweep of the Hornets in Paulding County. Cartersville won at Dalton 8-4 to finish a three-game sweep while Adairsville finished a two-game sweep of visiting LaFayette, 3-1. Cass lost at Calhoun, 5-4, as the Yellow Jackets finished a three-game sweep of the Colonels. WOODLAND 20, HIRAM 5 Woodland exploded for 20 runs on 19 hits Friday night at Hiram for a 20-5 win and a three-game series sweep over the Hornets. Following a 2-2 first inning, the Wildcats sent 18 batters to the plate in the top of the second inning and scored 12 runs to take control of the game. Rowan Billings had three hits including a home run and five RBIs. Chase Carson also finished with three hits for the Wildcats including a triple. Connor Stermer (triple, RBI) and Dylan Carver (triple) finished with two hits each. Dalton led after one inning 2-1 and tied the game at 3-all in the third inning before the Canes scored five runs across the fourth through sixth innings. Sawyer Wilson (2 IP, 3ER, 5H, 1BB, 5K) made the pitching start for Cartersville. Caleb Daniel (double) and Cameron Cochran (two doubles) had two hits and one RBI each to lead the Hurricanes’ offense. Luke Miller contributed a double and two RBIs. Harrison Childers hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning. Kaden Stephenson added a hit and Isaac McNair-Seigler had one RBI on a sacrifice fly. The loss dropped the Catamounts to 3-16 on the season and 1-8 in Region 7-5A. Cartersville (17-2, 9-0), ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, has four non-region games next week. The Canes will host Alexander on Wednesday (4 p.m.), Cedartown on Thursday (4 p.m.), and will play Sandy Creek (4 p.m.) and Decatur (7 p.m.) on Friday. CALHOUN 5, CASS 4 The Colonels stayed close with Calhoun Friday while attempting to salvage one win in the week-long three game series, but the Yellow Jackets prevailed in a 5-4 win. The loss for Cass foiled a strong relief pitching performance for three Colonels’ relievers. Trenton Payne, Carson Hill, and Devan Hutchinson combined for three shutout innings and allowed just one hit and one walk over their four innings of work. The Cass offense, however, could not muster the runs needed to catch the Yellow Jackets who led 5-2 in the third inning. Hunter Lovett (2+ IP, 5ER, 4H, 2BB, 2K) made the pitching start and was saddled with the loss for Cass. Cayden Roberts, Chase Tatum, and Wesley Collins had the only Colonels’ base hits. Calhoun improved to 9-11 on the season and 6-3 in Region 7-5A. Cass (10-9, 5-4) plays three non-region games next week facing Sonoraville Thursday night, Heritage Friday afternoon, and Whitewater Friday night. ADAIRSVILLE 3, LaFAYETTE 1 The Tigers improved to 5-1 in Region 6-AAA play Friday night with a hard-fought 3-1 win over visiting LaFayette. The win completed a home-and-home series sweep for Adairsville over the Ramblers. Three Adairsville pitchers combined to limit LaFayette’s offense Kaiden Coker (3.2 IP, 1ER, 4H, 3BB, 1K), Dawson Craig (1.2 IP, 0R, 3H, 2BB, 2K), and Jarrett Scott (1.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 2K) joined forces to scatter seven hits and five walks with five strikeouts. Chris Roper had two hits including a triple and two RBIs. Peyton Bowen also finished with two hits. Tyler Driggers homered in the fourth inning to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. PJ Weeks contributed a double and Landon O’Neal added one hit for Adairsville. The loss drops LaFayette to 7-13 overall and 0-6 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (11-7, 5-1) visits region-leader Ringgold Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. and will host the blue and gold Tigers on Thursday.

CASS BOYS 3, WOODLAND 1 Woodland led 1-0 at the intermission but the Colonels responded with three second-half goals to win 3-1 and secure a home game when the GHSA Class 5A state playoffs begin April 12. Mason Madrid scored the equalizer for Cass about five minutes into the second half evening the score at 1-1. In the 55th minute, Camden Hillhouse gave the Colonels the lead. His goal was assisted by Madrid. The final Cass goal came in the 68th minute. Kayden Pineda found the net off an assist from Christian Villela. Cass (8-7, 4-1) finishes second in Region 7-5A behind first place Dalton. Woodland (6-4-1, 3-2) finishes third in the region. The Colonels will host a first round state playoff game against the 3-seed from Region 8-5A. The Wildcats will open the state playoffs on the road at the 2-seed from Region 8-5A. Cass has a non-region home game Friday against East Paulding to conclude regular season play. WOODLAND GIRLS 8, CASS 3 The Lady Colonels opened the scoring Thursday night at Woodland, but the Lady Colonels carried a 2-1 advantage to the intermission. The Cass goal came in the 17th minute and was followed by back-to-back goals by Woodland’s Carlie Forman. Libby Morgan assisted on the first Lady Cats’ goal in the 19th minute and Reagan Weightman assisted on the second goal a couple of minutes later. The Lady Colonels tied the score 2-2 in the 42nd minute, but Woodland regained the lead two minutes later on a goal by Weightman assisted by Morgan. In the 45th minute, Cass knotted the score again at 3-3 before the Lady Cats scored five, unanswered goals. Brionna Carver scored her third goal of the game in the 55th minute. Weightman scored her second goal in the 58th minute. Forman netted her third goal in the 61st minute. Carver added a fourth goal in the 73rd minute and Libby Morgan scored Woodland’s eighth goal of the night with less than two minutes remaining. The final five Woodland goals included assists from Morgan twice, Weightman twice, Forman, and goalkeeper Peyton Keller. The Cass girls ended their season with a 2-13 record and 0-5 in Region 7-5A. Woodland (3-7-1, 2-3) advances to the GHSA Class 5A state playoffs as Region 7-5A’s No. 4-seed. The Lady Cats will travel to Region 8-5A champ Loganville Tuesday, April 11. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 6, MT. ZION-CARROLL 0 The Lady Tigers led 4-0 at halftime on first half goals by Gabi Becerra, Emma Ridley, Jessica Hogue, and Lizzie LeMay. Carly Edwards, Maddie Gossett, Addy Coker, and LeMay had first half assists. LeMay added two more Adairsville goals in the second half. Alivia Joslin assisted in the 71st minute and Becerra had the helper on the Lady Tigers’ sixth goal in the 78th minute. The Adairsville girls honored their two seniors — Anie McCormick and Addy Coker — in ceremonies on the night. The loss dropped Mt. Zion-Carroll to 5-7 on the season. Adairsville (10-5, 4-2) will be the 3-seed from Region 6-AAA in the GHSA state playoffs. The Lady Tigers will play at Douglass-Atlanta in the first round on April 11. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 6, MT. ZION-CARROLL 1 JJ Grimaldo scored a hat trick and had three assists to help lead the Tigers to a regular season-ending win Thursday night at home over the Mt. Zion-Carroll Eagles. John Mark Shepard scored a pair of goals for Adairsville and Blade Benefield added a goal in the 6-1 victory Adairsville led 2-1 at the intermission. The Tigers finish the regular season with a 7-8 overall record after beginning the season 0-4. The Adairsville boys will be the No. 4 seed from Region 6-AAA in the GHSA state playoffs. The Tigers open the first round at Sandy Creek on April 12 at 7 p.m. ALLATOONA 4, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 0 In a non-region matchup Thursday night, the Cartersville boys dropped a 4-0 decision to the visiting Allatoona Buccaneers. Allatoona improved to 8-5-3 on the season. Cartersville (5-7-3) finished as the No. 4-seed from Region 7-5A and will open the GHSA state playoffs on April 12 at the Region 8-5A champion — likely Flowery Branch. The Lady Canes (5-7-3) — Friday result not reported — finished as the No. 3-seed from Region 7-5A. The Cartersville girls will begin the GHSA state playoffs on April 11 at Jefferson.

The Adairsville Tigers picked up a Region 6-AAA win on the road Thursday night while Woodland and Cartersville collected Region 7-AAAAA wins on their home diamonds. At Cass, the Colonels dropped a home decision to Calhoun. ADAIRSVILLE 10, LaFAYETTE 2 The Tigers never trailed Thursday night at LaFayette and put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth inning with a six-run outburst to win 10-2. Jack Nelson (7 IP, 2R, 1ER, 5H, 1BB, 7K) scattered five hits and one walk across seven innings on the mound to earn the pitching win. He struck out seven. Adairsville scored two runs in the first and single runs in the second and third innings to take an early 4-2 lead. The Tigers’ six-run, sixth inning included five hits including a three-run homer by Evan Sanders and a two-run home run by Jarrett Scott. Sanders finished with two hits including his homer and four RBIs. Scott (HR, two RBIs), Nelson (double, two RBIs), Landon O’Neal (RBI), PJ Weeks, Tyler Driggers, Braxton Ryan, and Peyton Bowen (double) added one hit each. LaFayette (7-12, 0-5) visits Adairsville (10-7, 4-1) Friday at 5:55 p.m. to complete the two teams’ home-and-home series. WOODLAND 10, HIRAM 0 The Wildcats scored in four of five innings while pitchers Ayden Ray and Luke Evans combined on a two-hit shutout as Woodland blanked visiting Hiram Thursday, 10-0. Ray, who also had two hits including a double and three RBIs, pitched the first four innings giving up only a pair of hits and one walk. He struck out two. Evans struck out the side in the fifth inning to close out the mercy, run-rule win. Six Wildcats contributed one hit each. Jakiyon Porter (RBI), Coby Barrett (RBI), Jack Chatman (RBI), Julian Wright (double, RBI), Connor Stermer (RBI), and Joshua Hicks added one hit apiece. Mason Williams was credited with one RBI. Hiram (4-12, 0-8) hosts Woodland (10-10, 5-3) Friday at 5:55 p.m. to conclude the two teams’ three-game series. CARTERSVILLE 10, DALTON 0 Cartersville pitchers Ryan Johnson and Geoffrey Gore combined to shutout visiting Dalton Thursday night in a 10-0 win in six innings. Johnson started on the mound and struck out nine in five innings. He yielded five hits and one walk. Gore struck out one and retired the Catamounts in order in the sixth inning. The Purple Hurricanes scored three runs in the second, four in the fourth, and three more in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 10-run margin. Luke Miller (three RBIs), Cameron Cochran (two RBIs), and Isaac McNair-Seigler (one RBI) had two hits each for Cartersville. Miles Owen (double, two RBIs), Caleb Daniel (double, RBI), and Harrison Childers (RBI) added one hit each for the Canes. The Canes will play the third game of their series with Dalton (3-15, 1-7) on the road Friday at 5:55 p.m. CALHOUN 11, CASS 1 Calhoun pitcher Cooper Evans struck out thirteen and threw a six-inning, one-hitter to win at Cass on Thursday, 11-1. Evans allowed a second inning single and two walks, but kept the Colonels off the scoreboard except for a fifth inning run. Calhoun led 3-0 when Cass pushed across a run by way of an error, a walk, a pair of stolen bases and a passed ball. The Yellow Jackets put the game away in the top of the sixth inning by scoring eight runs. Five hits, three walks, two hit batsmen, and a sacrifice fly produced the rally. Cayden Roberts (4 IP, 3ER, 7H, 1BB, 3K) started and was tagged with the pitching loss for Cass. Justin Peace (1.1 IP, 5ER, 2H, 2BB) and Chase Tatum (0.2 IP, 3ER, 3H, 1BB) pitched in relief for the Colonels. Ripken West, Spencer Evans, and Isaac Green combined for eight of Calhoun’s dozen hits including two doubles and seven RBIs. Connor Jenkins had the only Cass base hit. The Colonels (10-8, 5-3) will seek to salvage the final game of the three-game series Friday at 5:55 p.m. at Calhoun (8-11, 5-3).

Georgia Highlands College softball won both games of a conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon over visiting South Georgia State CC. The Chargers won the opening game 7-4 and took down the Hawks 15-7 in Game 2. Pitchers Jaycie Hand (4 IP, 3ER, 6H, 0BB) and Emma Veitch (3 IP, 1ER, 3H, 0BB, 6K) both worked in the pitching circle in the first win. In the second game, Rena Fraga (3.2 IP, 5R, 3ER, 5H, 1BB, 4K) made the pitching start and Veitch (1.1 IP, 2R, 1ER, 1H) closed out the final four outs. Abigail Lathrop paced the Chargers’ offense with six hits in the doubleheader that included two doubles, one triple, and five RBIs. Audrey Johnson followed with five hits that included three doubles and five RBIs. Allison Deweese finished with three doubles and three RBIs. Daisy Brown totaled three hits including a double and one RBI. Brady Tharp also contributed three hits for the day. Jordan Blair tossed in two hits including a double and two RBIs during the doubleheader. Malone Aldridge (double, two RBIs), Madison Dennis (double, RBI), Avery Fisher (RBI), Annsley Todd, and Taylor Justice added one hit apiece during the productive day. With the two losses, South Georgia State CC slips to 6-30 overall and 1-9 in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association play. Georgia Highlands (14-20, 8-4) hosts conference foe Georgia Military College next Tuesday.
