Class 5A top-ranked Cartersville defeated visiting Woodland Thursday night while Adairsville topped Ridgeland and Cass won at Dalton. CARTERSVILLE 5, WOODLAND 1 The Canes and Wildcats battled scoreless through three innings before Cartersville broke the ice with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Cartersville added on a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to finish off a 5-1 win Thursday night over visiting Woodland. Ryan Johnson (7 IP, 1R, 0ER, 6H, 0BB, 7K) struck out seven and allowed just one, unearned run in a complete-game effort. Austin Daves (6 IP, 5R, 4ER, 9H, 0BB, 2K) pitched well for the Wildcats but suffered the loss. Ayden Ray had three hits for Woodland and drove in the Wildcats’ lone run in the sixth. Mason Williams, Cam Williams, and Brett Good had the other Woodland base hits. Miles Owen finished with two hits for Cartersville. Cameron Cochran (RBI), Luke Miller, and Landon Cole had one double each. Caleb Daniel (RBI), Harrison Childers, Isaac McNair-Seigler (RBI), and Paul Gamble (RBI) added one hit each. ADAIRSVILLE 7, RIDGELAND 4 The Tigers finished a two-game Region 6-AAA sweep of visiting Ridgeland Thursday night with a 7-4 win over the Panthers. Adairsville posted four runs in the bottom of the first to take control early. Ridgeland scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to shrink the Tigers’ lead to 5-2, but Adairsville answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 7-2. The Panthers scored twice in the top of the seventh and had a runner on base when Adairsville reliever Jarrett Scott ended the threat with a strikeout. Tigers’ starter Jack Nelson (6 IP, 2R, 0ER, 4H, 2BB, 8K) scattered four hits and a pair of walks while picking up the pitching win. He limited Ridgeland to only two unearned runs. Scott (1 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) finished off the seventh inning on the mound for the Tigers. Scott also paced the Adairsville offense with three hits including a double. Landon O’Neal followed with two hits and one RBI. Evan Sanders hit a solo home run. Nelson doubled with one RBI. Tyler Driggers contributed a double. Braxton Ryan added a hit and one RBI. Peyton Bowen and Hayden Blalock also drove in a run. The loss dropped Ridgeland to 2-7 on the year and 0-2 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (8-6, 2-0) travels to region-foe Gordon Lee Friday for a 5:55 p.m. start. CASS 6, DALTON 2 (9 innings) Tuesday night at Cass, the Catamounts scored seven runs across the final two innings for a come-from-behind win. Thursday night the Colonels flipped the tables at Dalton. Connor Jenkins homered in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra innings and the Colonels scored four times with two outs in the top of the ninth to even the series at one game each. A Dalton error followed by back-to-back hits by Nic Wright and Wesley Collins gave Cass a 4-2 lead. Then another Cats’ error and a double by Jesiel Moctezuma drove in two more runs. Trenton Payne gave up a one-out walk in the bottom of the ninth before striking out the final two Catamounts. Devan Hutchinson (3.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB) collected the pitching win in relief of starter Cayden Roberts (5 IP, 2R, 1ER, 5H, 1BB, 2K). Moctezuma (two RBIs) and Wright (RB) both finished with two hits including a double for the Colonels. Cayden Roberts and Chase Tatum (RBI) also doubled. Jenkins (homer) and Collins (RBI) had the other Cass hits. Dalton (3-11, 1-4) travels to Cass (9-6, 4-1) to complete their three-game region series Friday at 5:55 p.m.

The Cartersville and Cass soccer teams split Region 7-5A matches Wednesday night at Cartersville. The Lady Canes blanked the Lady Colonels 3-0 and the Cass boys defeated the Cartersville boys, 3-1. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 3, CASS 0 Three different Lady Canes scored goals Wednesday night as the Cartersville girls blanked visiting Cass, 3-0. Hattie Beth Williams, Kiley McMichael, and Mallory Nicklas scored the Lady Canes’ goals. Cartersville improved to 4-6-1 on the season and 2-1 in region action. The Lady Colonels fall to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in Region 7-5A. CASS BOYS 3, CARTERSVILLE 1 The Colonels built a 2-0 lead in the first half Wednesday night at Cartersville and added to their lead in the second half en route to a 3-1 Region 7-5A win over the Purple Hurricanes. Alex Hernandez scored the first Cass goal on a free kick. The second goal for the Colonels was finished by Mason Madrid off an assist from Camden Hillhouse. Cass made it 3-0 in the second half on a Hillhouse goal assisted by Madrid. Daniel Abeja scored the Cartersville goal at about the 60th minute. Cass head coach Justin Fitzgerald commended the defensive effort of the Colonels’ Jordan Solis and Kayden Pineda in the midfield. The loss drops the Hurricanes to 5-4-2 on the season and 2-1 in Region 7-5A. Cass improves to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in region play.

The Woodland and Calhoun soccer teams traded shutouts Tuesday night on the Wildcats’ home pitch. CALHOUN 3, WOODLAND GIRLS 0 The visiting Lady Jackets scored a pair of first half goals and went on the win at Woodland Tuesday night, 3-0. Calhoun improved to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in Region 7-5A. Woodland (1-7-1, 0-2) hosts Hiram for another region match Friday at 5:30 p.m. WOODLAND BOYS 4, CALHOUN 0 The Wildcats scored all four goals in the first 40 minutes as they blanked visiting Calhoun Tuesday night. The loss drops the Yellow Jackets to 5-7 on the season and 1-3 in Region 7-5A. Woodland (4-3-1, 1-1) hosts Hiram Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

The Adairsville girls and boys soccer teams dropped Region 6-3A matches Tuesday night at Coahulla Creek. The Lady Tigers fell 2-0 and the Tigers lost a 6-1 decision. COAHULLA CREEK 2, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 0 Adairsville keeper Annie McCormick was recognized by the coaching staff for her numerous key stops Tuesday night — keeping Adairsville close, but the Lady Tigers could not crack the scoreboard in a 2-0 region loss at Coahulla Creek. The Adairsville girls (8-5, 3-2 Region 6-AAA) play at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe on Friday. COAHULLA CREEK 6, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 1 An experienced and physical Colts team built a 3-0 lead in the first half and went on to defeat visiting Adairsville 6-1 Tuesday night in Whitfield County. JJ Grimaldo scored the only Adairsville goal of the game on a penalty kick in the second half. Adairsville plays at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe on Friday with an opportunity to secure a state playoff berth for the first time in the program’s history. A win would give the Tigers the region’s 4-seed and earn a playoff trip to Sandy Creek.

It took nine innings Tuesday night, but the Adairsville Tigers escaped with an 8-4 Region 6-AAA win at Ridgeland. Adairsville put three hits together with three walks and a hit batsman to score four times in the top of the ninth then Tigers’ pitcher Grayson Belcher closed out the bottom of the inning to collect the pitching win. Belcher (4.2 IP, 1ER, 1H, 3BB, 8K) entered in the fifth inning and worked the rest of the way. Jack Whitley (4.1 IP, 3R, 0ER, 5H, 2BB, 5K) made the start on the mound for Adairsville. Jarrett Scott had two doubles and three RBIs for the Tigers. Landon O’Neal (two RBIs) and Chris Roper also had two hits. Tyler Driggers hit a two-run home run in the third inning that gave Adairsville a 3-2 lead at the time. Jack Nelson, Peyton Bowen, and Easton Elrod added one hit apiece. Dawson Craig contributed a sacrifice hit and one RBI. Ridgeland (2-6, 0-1) and Adairsville (7-6, 1-0) play Game 2 of their home-and-home series Thursday night at 5:55 p.m.

Cartersville pitcher Caden Carroll struck out seven and allowed only one first inning single as the top-ranked Purple Hurricanes won at Woodland Tuesday night 11-0 in five innings. The Canes scored three runs in the top of the first, four in the third, and added on late in the mercy rule shortened matchup. Harrison Childers (double, four RBIs), Paul Gamble (double, two RBIs), Isaac McNair-Seigler (double, RBI), and Caleb Daniel (two doubles, RBI) had two hits each for the Hurricanes. Luke Miller (double, RBI), Trip Bradley (2 RBIs), and Miles Owen added one hit apiece. Rowan Billings (2.1 IP, 5ER, 4H, 3BB, 5K) made the pitching start for Woodland and was tagged with the loss. Hunter Shirley (0.2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 2BB, 1K), Zach Lambert (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1K), and Coby Barrett (1 IP, 3ER, 3H, 1BB, 1K) also pitched for the Wildcats. Woodland (8-8, 3-1) and Cartersville (12-2, 4-0) continue their three-game Region 7-5A series Thursday at Richard Bell Field and Friday back at Woodland. Dalton scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning Tuesday night on their way to a come-from-behind 7-4 win at Cass. The Colonels led 4-0 through the first five innings. Carson Hill drove in a first inning run with a single. Devan Hutchinson drove home a run in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly. Hill popped a solo home run in the fifth and Chase Tatum drove in a run later in the fifth with a sac fly. Dalton’s six-run sixth included three singles and four doubles as the Catamounts took the lead for good. Cass managed a base runner in both the sixth and seventh innings, but failed to produce any more runs. Brady McCullough and Tyson Greenwade combined for six hits and four RBIs for Dalton. Josh Mitchell (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB) picked up the pitching win in relief. Connor Stockard (2 IP, 0R, 2H, 2K) earned a save for the Catamounts. Hill (5.1 IP, 4ER, 9H, 1BB, 7K) made the pitching start for Cass. Trenton Payne (0.0 IP, 2ER, 3H) suffered the pitching loss. Hutchinson (1.2 IP, 1ER, 3H, 0BB, 1K) retired the final five outs on the mound for the Colonels. Hill finished with three hits including a home run and three RBIs. Georgia Highlands won the first game of a four-game conference series with Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Tuesday 4-3 in Tifton. The host Stallions posted three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead but the Chargers chipped away in the middle innings. Georgia Highlands scored a run in the top of the third and Conner Faulkner hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to knot the score at 3-3. That is where the score remained until the eighth. Faulkner reached on an error and moved to second when Jayden Talik walked. A groundout moved the baserunners to second and third and Faulkner scored on a passed ball. Declan Dun (6.2 IP, 0R, 3H, 1BB, 5K) picked up the Chargers’ pitching win in relief of starter Jeremy Gay (1 IP, 3R, 1ER, 1H, 3BB, 1K). Davis Mortland (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 1K) earned a save by retiring the final four outs. Georgia Highlands (21-8, 1-0 GCAA) and ABAC (14-19, 0-1) continue their series Friday and Saturday with three more games hosted by GHC.

The Cartersville High gymnastics team captured the top three places in All-Around and placed first in the Class 5A and under division Monday night at Lovett. Cartersville finished with 97.35 points followed by the host Lions with 89.8. Annaston Wilson, a senior, placed third in All-Around with a score of 29.3. She was second in vault and third in bars with scores of 8.4 and 6.0. Fellow senior Jayla Byrd placed second in All-Around with a score of 35.8. Byrd was second in vault and bars scoring 8.4 and 7.0. She was third in beam and floor scoring 8.05 and 8.8. Junior Karley Garrison secured her bid to the GHSA Gymnastics Preliminary Meet in April with an All-Around first place score of 35.8. She was second among all competitors in all classifications at the meet. Garrison placed first in all events with individual qualifying scores of 9.2 in vault, 9.2 on beam, and 9.3 on floor exercise. The Canes gymnasts host their next meet Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Cartersville Twisters Gym. The team will be recognizing their two seniors at the meet.

The Adairsville girls’ and boys’ tennis teams along with the Woodland boys’ team won matches Monday evening. The Adairsville teams won Region 6-AAA matches with the Ridgeland Panthers while Woodland split non-region matches with South Paulding.
