The Cartersville Little League 8-10 year old baseball tournament team won the Georgia District 1 championship Thursday night with an 8-7 extra inning victory over Bartow County at Hamilton Crossing Park. Cartersville led 4-3 after one inning and had a 5-3 lead before Bartow County scored three runs in the bottom of the third to grab a 6-5 advantage. Cartersville moved ahead 7-6 in the top of the sixth but Bartow sent the game to extra innings with a run in the bottom of the frame. After keeping Bartow off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh, Cartersville took advantage of three straight walks and pushed across the winning run with a groundout. Cartersville reliever Drew Morris worked a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the pitching victory. He struck out one. Brock Morris worked the first six innings on the mound for Cartersville and fanned four. Cade Rogan led the Cartersville offense with three hits. Anthony Hunt and Easton Stephens followed with two hits each. Alec Higgins and Jack McCurry added one base hit apiece. Declan Parker had three hits for Bartow County. Knox Janssen, Gabe Wise, Parker Rampley, and August Blasengame produced one hit each. Bartow County finished the tournament 2-2 with wins over Cedartown and Rockmart. The two losses were both one-run decisions to Cartersville. Cartersville went 3-0 to capture the district title. They will travel to West Point Little League July 9 for the Georgia Little League 8-10 year old state tournament. 8U COACH PITCH BARTOW GREEN PLACES 4TH AT GRPA STATE TOURNEY The Bartow Green 8U coach pitch baseball team defeated St. Simons 7-6 in extra innings in an elimination game Thursday morning, but was eliminated later in the day with a 9-8 loss to West Jackson. As a result, Bartow Green finished fourth in the 12-team GRPA state tournament at Riverbend Park in Dalton. In the win over St. Simons, Jake Nida had two hits including a double. Cole Baker also finished with two hits. Hank Earwood had the walkoff hit in extra innings. Cooper Adcock contributed a double. Brody Morrow, Titus Childers, and Camden Forsyth added one hit apiece. Bartow Green finished the tournament 3-2 with a win over Crisp County and two wins over St. Simons. The losses came to West Jackson and Jefferson. CARTERSVILLE GOLD 12U FINISHES SEVENTH AT GRPA STATE TOURNEY The Cartersville Gold 12U baseball team was eliminated from the GRPA state tournament Thursday with a 6-3 loss to Colquitt County. Cartersville Gold finished 1-2 in the tournament and tied for seventh place. In Thursday’s loss, Cartersville led 3-0 heading to the bottom of the second inning before Colquitt scored five times to take the lead for good. Colquitt added an insurance run in the fourth. The locals defeated Crisp County 9-1 before losing to Jefferson 10-8 in extra innings. In the morning win, Bartow Green scored four runs in the third inning and five in the fifth inning. ATHLETES BEYOND BARTOW Former Cartersville High standout Mason Barnett was the starting pitcher Monday night in Auburn's Regional win. The hurler helped the Tigers reach the College Baseball World Series for the sixth time in program history and the second time in the last four years. In MiLB action, pitcher Sam Howard picked up a couple of holds with relief performances for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens while Yankees' organization catcher Anthony Seigler started five games with solid results this week with Hudson Valley. Meanwhile on the hardwoods, former Canes' basketball product A.J. Mosby and the Albany Patroons advanced in the TBL playoffs. PRO BASEBALL Sam Howard (Toledo Mud Hens, Detroit Tigers Triple-A affiliate; 9th-year pro; Georgia Southern University; Cartersville HS) — Howard tossed a total of 1-2/3 innings across a pair of wins over the Iowa Cubs. Following a scoreless two-out stint in a 7-6 win last Friday, Howard gave up a solo home run but nothing else in earning a hold this past Sunday. The left-hander struck out two in an eventual 14-9 victory. Anthony Seigler (Hudson Valley Renegades, New York Yankees High Class A affiliate; 5th-year pro; Cartersville HS) — Seigler started five times (four at catcher) during a series against the Jersey Shore BlueClaws. The highlight of the week for the former first-round pick came Saturday when Seigler, batting leadoff for the Renegades, cranked a solo home run for the only tally in a 1-0 win. Despite finishing with just three hits in the series, the switch-hitter kept his OPS above 1.000 by drawing five walks. In total, Seigler scored and drove in three runs each in the series. COLLEGE BASEBALL Mason Barnett (Auburn University, Jr., Cartersville HS) — Barnett threw the opening 4 1/3 innings of Game 3 in a Super Regionals series against third-seeded Oregon State Monday in Corvallis, Oregon. The right-hander departed with a 2-1 lead and two runners on base, who were eventually stranded, in a 4-3 victory. Barnett allowed five hits and issued three walks (all to the same hitter), while striking out five of the 21 batters he faced. With the win, the Tigers advance to the College World Series in Omaha. No. 14 seed Auburn will open the eight-team tournament with a matchup against fellow SEC West member Ole Miss at 7 p.m. Saturday. PRO BASKETBALL A.J. Mosby (Albany Patroons, The Basketball League; Cartersville) — After dropping Game 1 of the Northeast Division finals at the Atlantic City Gambits, the Patroons reeled off back-to-back home wins to capture the series. Mosby posted two extremely similar lines in the victories, totaling 37 points and finishing with exactly five assists and four rebounds in each game. Mosby, who posted 17 points and seven rebounds in the series-opening loss, shot 6-of-8 from the floor for 19 points in Game 2 — a 102-86 win. He added 18 points (7-for-13 FGs) in the decisive Game 3 — a 109-83 triumph. A first-team all-East Conference selection, Mosby went 4-for-4 from the foul line in both victories. 2022 Georgia Recreation and Parks Association District 5 Tournament capsules for baseball and softball teams representing the Parks and Recreation Departments of Bartow County and Cartersville. 8U Coach Pitch at Riverbend Park and Westside Park in Whitfield County. Adairsville 8U and Cartersville Purple 8U have advanced to the final three teams heading into Monday night’s action. Adairsville defeated Rockmart #2 Friday night 24-1 and beat Calhoun Saturday, 15-10. Cartersville Purple has a 16-1 win over Dalton Red, a 7-6 victory over Rockmart, and a 15-13 win over Rome #2. The two local teams will square off Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Westside Park with the winner moving into the championship round of the 15-team tournament. The loser will need to survive an additional elimination game and then defeat Tuesday’s winner twice in the finals of the double-elimination tournament. In other tournament action, 8U Bartow Blue remains in contention in the loser’s bracket while 8U Cartersville Gold was eliminated after two straight losses. 8U ADAIRSVILLE 15, CALHOUN 10 Camden Forsyth had three hits for Adairsville including a double.
