Cartersville pushed across single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings Thursday night to defeat visiting Cass, 3-1, in Region 7-5A action. Cass led 1-0 with a run in the top of the first driven home with a line drive single by Dariana Sosa. Cartersville tied the score in the bottom of the fourth when Campbell Rogers tripled home a run. In the fifth inning, Elizabeth Nelson singled to start the Canes’ frame. She then stole second and moved to third base on a sacrifice by Layne Callan. Kiley Arnold followed with a ground out to scored Nelson for a Cartersville 2-1 lead. The Lady Canes added an insurance run in the next inning when Rogers doubled home Jordan Bishop. Pitching on both sides was solid. McKinley Chada (6 IP, 0R, 3H, 2BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win for Cartersville working six shutout innings in relief of Canes’ starter Kennedy Stevens (1 IP, 1ER, 4H). Emma Gibson (6 IP, 3ER, 4H, 6BB, 5K) pitched all six innings for Cass striking out five. Rogers led the Cartersville offense with two extra base hits and two RBIs. Erin McCrary and Nelson had the other Purple Hurricanes’ hits. Ansley Hight had two hits for Cass including a triple. Sosa (RBI), Braelyn Franklin (triple), Haylee Dishmon, Reese Howard, and Alexis Woods had one hit each for the Lady Colonels. Cass (5-4, 2-2) will play two games Saturday at North Paulding in the Allatoona Bucs Bash. The Colonels will face Lowndes at 10 a.m. and the host Wolfpack at 2 p.m. Cartersville (4-5-1, 3-1) plays at Calhoun Tuesday at 5:55 p.m.

In local volleyball action Thursday night, Cass defeated visiting Rockmart in a best-of-five, non-region match while Cartersville split a pair of non-region matches at The Storm Center. Woodland, also playing at home Thursday, suffered a heartbreaking loss to East Paulding in five sets. In Carroll County, Adairsville lost a pair of road matches to Central-Carroll and Temple. Lady Colonels top Rockmart Cass volleyball defeated visiting Rockmart 3-1 in a best-of-five, non-region match Thursday night. The Colonels won the first two sets 25-11 and 25-15. Rockmart won the third set 25-21 before Cass closed out the match with a 25-20 victory in the fourth set. Cass (6-5) participates in the Rockmart Invitational Saturday at Rockmart High School where they will open competition against Chattooga. Lady Canes split matches at The Storm Center Cartersville volleyball dropped a 25-10, 25-16 decision Thursday night to visiting Cherokee, but bounced back later in the evening to take down Cambridge in straight sets, 25-19 and 25-7. The Hurricanes (3-5) are scheduled to face Sonoraville, Columbus, and North Cobb Christian Saturday at the Calhoun Invitational. Adairsville drops two road matches In non-region matches Thursday night in Carroll County, the Lady Tigers lost 25-17, 25-18 to Central-Carroll and dropped another match to host Temple 26-24 and 25-22. Jordan Hartline had six kills in the two matches combined. Jenna Claire Hendley finished with nine blocks. Annie McCormick totaled nine assists and Sherry Wells contributed 24 digs. Richlyn Blair had four blocks in the loss to Central. Addie Pearson had three kills in the loss to Temple and Jayna Wilson added four blocks in the Temple match. “It was a very rough night for us,” said Adairsville coach Kaylie Vaughn Martin. “We worked very hard and couldn’t finish points. We’re ready for practice tomorrow and preparation for next week.” Adairsville (5-7-2) plays at Christian Heritage next Tuesday at 6 p.m. Lady Cats lose heartbreaker The Woodland volleyball team suffered a difficult five set loss at home Thursday night to East Paulding. The visiting Lady Raiders won the first and third sets 25-15 and 25-20 while the Lady Cats took the second and fourth sets 25-23 and 25-18. East Paulding won the fifth set 15-3. “We had all the momentum after winning the fourth set,” said Woodland coach David Condon. “Unfortunately, we just fell apart in that deciding set.” Kendall Condon had 30 assists on the night to go with 13 digs and five kills. Madison West totaled 13 kills, three aces, and two blocks. Anastyn Jones finished with nine kills, nine digs, and a pair of aces. Lili Womack contributed a dozen digs and four aces while Bailee Motes added five kills and nine digs. Woodland (3-9-1) is home next Tuesday at 5 p.m. against Model and Coahulla Creek.

A late inning rally lifted Woodland to a Region 7-5A win Tuesday night over Cartersville while Adairsville split its region doubleheader with Bremen and Cass held on to defeat Hiram. Late inning surge lifts Woodland past Cartersville The Woodland Lady Cats scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning at Cartersville Tuesday night for a come-from-behind 12-11 Region 7-5A win over the Lady Canes. The go-ahead hit in the seventh inning for Woodland was a three-run double off the bat of shortstop Cambrie Carrington. She finished with two hits and six RBIs. All of Woodland’s runs came in just two frames. The Wildcats trailed 4-0 when they scored seven times in the top of the third inning. They then fell behind 11-7 before posting the five-spot in the seventh. Jordan Hammonds (2 RBIs), Karmen Zeferino (RBI), Elizabeth Hartsfield (double, RBI), Alana Carnes (RBI), Bailey Sakacsi, Kamryn Smith, and Haley Collum added one hit each for the Lady Cats. Peyton Dorn (2.2 IP, 2R, 1ER, 1H, 3BB, 1K) snagged the pitching win in relief by closing out the final eight outs in the circle. Collum (4 IP, 6R, 5ER, 6H, 2BB, 5K) started for Woodland. Lady Colonels hold on to edge Hornets Cass softball built a 7-0 lead in the first two innings at home Tuesday night against Hiram and then held off the Hornets for a 7-6 Region 7-5A win at the Cass High Athletic Complex. Alexis Woods had two hits at the plate and picked up the pitching victory for the Lady Colonels with 5-2/3 innings of work in the circle. She allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and four walks while fanning four. Hiram (3-3, 0-3) threatened down the stretch with three runs in the fourth inning and four more in the sixth. A pair of Cass infield errors in the top of the seventh put the potential go-ahead runs on base for the Hornets before Colonels’ reliever Emma Gibson slammed the door with two groundouts and a fly out. Gibson, who produced one hit on offense, earned a save by closing out the final four outs in the circle. She did not yield a run and gave up just one base hit. Braelyn Franklin also had two hits for Cass including one RBI. Reese Howard finished with one hit and two RBIs. Tigers split region opening doubleheader The Lady Tigers scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning Tuesday evening, then held off visiting Bremen down the stretch for an 11-8 Region 6-AAA win in the first of two games. Bremen threatened late with eight runs across the final four innings, but Adairsville reliever Jordan Clay (1 IP, 2R, 1ER, 3H) was able to close out the final frame to secure the Tigers’ win. Jenna Young had three hits including two RBIs to help lead the Adairsville offense. Brie Patterson followed with two hits including a home run and two RBIs. Taylor Evans also had two hits — both doubles with one RBI. Megan Gregory (4.1 IP, 4ER, 4H, 4BB, 9K), who was the starting and winning pitcher for Adairsville, homered with two RBIs. Annalee Morris (2 RBIs), McKenzie Pullum, and Kelsey Gleason added one hit each for the Lady Tigers. Chelsea Bates (1.2 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H, 2K) pitched in the fifth and sixth innings in middle relief. In Game 2, Bremen turned the tables to win 11-1 in six innings. The Blue Devils posted five runs in the third inning, two in the fifth, and added four insurance runs in the top of the sixth for their 11-run total. The lone Adairsville run crossed in the fifth inning. Halle Chason had two hits for Adairsville including one double in the loss. Adairsville volleyball swept a pair of home matches Tuesday night over Temple and Dalton Academy. The host Tigers beat Temple 25-20, 25-15 as Jenna Claire Hendley, Addie Pearson, and Jordan Hartline finished with three kills each. Jayna Wilson produced eight blocks and three service aces while Adysen Garvey also finished with three aces. In a 25-6, 25-10 win over Dalton Academy, Richlyn Blair had 10 kills. Pearson finished with four kills, and Hendley added six service aces. Adairsville (5-5-2) travels to Temple Thursday where they will also face Central-Carroll. ECA volleyball sweeps Covenant Christian Excel Christian Academy volleyball improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in their GAPPS region with a straight sets win Tuesday over Covenant Christian of Cedartown. The Lady Eagles won 25-22, 25-13, and 25-16 to take the best-of-five sets match. Excel hosts Unity Christian Saturday at 11 a.m. Woodland splits non-region matches with Campbell, Sprayberry The Lady Cats split a pair of non-region volleyball matches Tuesday night in Marietta, falling to Campbell 25-21, 25-15 before bouncing back to defeat host Sprayberry 25-23, 25-16. Madison West had 10 kills, seven digs, and two aces for the Wildcats. Kendall Condon finished with 13 assists, six digs, and three aces. Anastyn Jones contributed seven kills and eight digs. Lili Womack totaled 16 digs with four assists. Woodland (2-8-1) hosts East Paulding Thursday afternoon. Cartersville volleyball suffers losses The Lady Canes dropped a pair of matches Tuesday night at South Forsyth, narrowly falling to the hosts 25-23, 25-23 before losing to Creekview 25-18, 27-25. Kingston’s Maggie Ashmore fired rounds of 68-70-73-69 — 280 last Thursday through Sunday to finish tied for 18th place in Stage I Qualifying School for the LPGA and Epson Tour. Stage I Qualifying was conducted on the Palmer and Dinah Shore Tournament courses in Rancho Mirage, California The 72-hole event had a 54-hole cut with the Top 100 and ties advancing to Stage II Qualifying October 18-21 on the Bobcat and Panther courses of Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Florida. Ashmore, 27, turned professional in 2020 after her collegiate career at Augusta University. In six 2022 appearances on the Epson Tour, she has made one cut finishing tied for 21st at the Twin Bridges Championship. In her rookie season in 2020, she played in two events and made one cut.

NFL TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (2nd yr. pro; NFL; Clemson; Cartersville HS) … in a pair of home preseason losses August 12 to the Cleveland Browns and this past Saturday to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 22-year-old quarterback is 20-for-33 passing. He was 6-for-12 for 95 yards and one touchdown against the Browns in a 24-13 loss. He also had one rush attempt for 11 yards. In Saturday’s 16-15 loss, Lawrence was 14-for-21 through the air for 133 yards but no touchdowns. He had two rushing attempts for 13 yards. The Jaguars are 0-3 in the preseason and will finish the exhibition schedule against the Falcons in Atlanta this Saturday afternoon. MILLER FORRISTALL — Cleveland Browns (2nd yr. pro; NFL; Alabama; Cartersville HS) … the 24-year-old tight end was targeted twice and had one catch for 11 yards August 12 during a 24-13 win at Jacksonville. The Browns are 1-1 in the preseason and will complete the exhibition schedule Saturday night at home against the Chicago Bears. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (9th yr. pro; Triple-A Detroit Tigers organization; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS) … lowered his MiLB season ERA to 2.77 with scoreless appearances August 12 and 17. Working an inning and one-third August 12, the lefty walked one and struck out two in parts of the fourth and fifth innings during a 5-0 home loss to the Omaha Storm Chasers. Last Wednesday at the Columbus Clippers, the 29-year-old struck out one while working a scoreless sixth inning as the Mud Hens won 4-0. Howard is 1-2 in 28 MiLB appearances this season across 26 innings. He has 31 strikeouts. Toledo (61-54) is in third place in the International League’s West Division. The Mud Hens trail Nashville by 8.5 games and host a six game series with the Louisville Bats Tuesday through Sunday. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Hudson Valley Renegades (5th yr. pro; High Class-A New York Yankees organization; Cartersville HS) … in five games this past week at the Brooklyn Cyclones, the 23 year old catcher/DH was 6-for-16 at the plate including one double, six walks, two RBIs, and five runs scored. He also stole his 16th base in Sunday’s win. For the season, Seigler has a .242 batting average with seven home runs and 35 RBIs in 269 official at bats. Hudson Valley (61-52 overall) is 27-20 in the second half standings and in first place by 1.5 games with just 18 games remaining in the regular season. The Renegades play a six game home series Tuesday through Sunday against the Hickory Crawdads.

Cass volleyball finished 2-2 Saturday in four matches played at the Coosa Invitational in Floyd County. The Colonels took a pair of straight set wins over Coosa and Rockmart but lost to Villa Rica in straight sets and LaFayette in a three set battle. Cass defeated Coosa 25-22, 25-14 and topped Rockmart 25-16, 25-21. The Lady Colonels lost the first set with LaFayette 25-23, won the second set 25-16, but fell in a deciding third set 15-3. They also dropped a 25-10, 25-8 decision to Villa Rica. Jada Zimmerman led the Cass attackers with nine kills on the day. Harlee Davis and Tamira Feanny finished with six each. Alondra Burgos had four kills and Carlee Turner added three. Carson Brannon and Davis led the Colonels with nine and eight services aces, respectively. Brannon produced 28 assists. Cass (5-3) gets a non-region rematch at LaFayette Tuesday at 5 p.m. where the Colonels will also play Armuchee.

Excel Christian Academy volleyball improved to 2-1 on the season Friday night with a five-set victory over visiting Heirway Christian Academy. The two teams traded wins through the first four sets before the Lady Eagles captured the win by taking the fifth set. Heirway Christian won the first and third sets 25-11 and 25-12 while Excel Christian won the second and fourth sets 25-14 and 25-21. ECA won the tie-breaking fifth set, 15-8. Excel's Clara Holley went for a 6-point service run in the fourth set and teammate Chae Vieira was the stat leader in kills and blocks for both teams. Excel travels to St. Mary’s Catholic Monday for a 6 p.m. start and will host Covenant Christian and Cedartown Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes opened the 2022 season Friday night in Canton with a dominant 35-0 win over the Cherokee Warriors. The Cartersville defense kept the Warriors behind the chains much of the night and earned a shutout in the season opener. The Canes built a 28-0 lead in the first half and scored on all but two possessions in the first two quarters. One possession ended with a Cartersville punt that Cherokee misplayed. That Warriors' muff led to a Cartersville score. After the Hurricanes added a third quarter touchdown, the final period was played with a continuous clock enabling the Cartersville coaching staff to get a large number of younger players in the game for their initial varsity experience. Quarterback Paul Gamble connected on three touchdown passes including one on each of the Canes’ first two possessions. The first was a 13 yard completion to Collin Fletcher. His second scoring toss went to Jaylen Scott. Malachi Jeffries had a pair of short touchdown runs to build a 28-0 lead at halftime, then Gamble hooked up with Romo Pace on a 46 yard strike to build a 35-0 Cartersville lead. Jesus Gutierrez successfully booted all five PATs for the Canes. Cartersville (1-0) plays its home opener next Friday with the Jonesboro Cardinals coming to Weinman Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Woodland entered the fourth quarter at East Paulding Friday night trailing 31-0 before the Wildcats scored a pair of touchdowns in a 38-13 opening night loss in Dallas. Javen Parker scored twice in the first half for East Paulding on runs of 13 and 14 yards while Cooper Hall added a 22 yard field goal. Those three scores gave the Raiders a 17-0 lead by halftime. Baylor Thomason connected with Cameron Shelley midway through the third quarter to put East Paulding up 24-0. Quarterback Chantz Bouknight then hooked up with Kenechi Oluku for a 38 yard touchdown pass on the Raiders next possession to make the score 31-0. Woodland defensive lineman Kwadrus Wilson scooped up a botched East Paulding snap with 9:32 remaining in the game and returned it 55 yards for the Wildcats’ first score. The extra point failed leaving the score at 31-6. After Malachi Mitchell added a 4 yard touchdown run for East Paulding with 5:40 remaining, Woodland’s Isaiah Livsey added a final score for the Wildcats on a 10 yard run with 0:33 left in the game. In an exciting matchup that saw the lead exchanged seven times, the Cass Colonels were edged by the Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs Friday night 26-25 at Barron Stadium in Rome. The neutral site game was part of the 2022 Corky Kell Classic and was the second of three games Friday at Barron Stadium. When rain pushed through the Floyd County area, the game was delayed for an additional 20 minutes at halftime before the weather cleared. Kennesaw Mountain’s T.J. Jenkins rushed for 179 yards and a touchdown to lead the Mustangs offense. Quarterback Cayman Prangley finished 7-for-15 through the air for 128 yards and a pair of touchdowns while his top receiver Cayden Lee caught five passes for 93 yards and two scores. Lee’s two touchdown receptions were from seven yards in the first quarter to give Kennesaw Mountain a 7-0 lead and from 53 yards in the second period that put the Mustangs up 14-13. Jenkins scored on a 41 yard run in the third period to give Kennesaw Mountain a 23-19 lead and placekicker Ty Roldan — who made all three of his PAT kicks — coverted on a 35 yard field goal with 9:11 left in the fourth quarter for the final go-ahead points. Cass junior runningback Mac Nelson carried 17 times for 111 yards and one touchdown. His score was a 2 yard run into the end zone that gave Cass a 25-23 lead with 1:16 left in the third quarter. Colonels’ quarterback Devin Henderson was 9-for-14 with two touchdowns and 113 yards. He also rushed for 77 yards on 18 attempts including a 29 yard TD scamper that knotted the score 7-7 late in the first quarter. In the second period, Henderson connected with Kintrell Whatley in the back of the end zone for a 19 yard touchdown. The deflected catch capped a 10-play, 79 yard drive for Cass giving the Colonels a 13-7 lead. Sacovie White caught six passes for 59 yards and one touchdown. White’s touchdown catch came on the final play of the first half. It capped a brilliant three play drive in the final minute that covered 58 yards and gave the Colonels a 19-16 halftime advantage. Cass will reflect on some missed opportunities. Two missed PAT kick attempts in the first half, primarily due to poor snaps, led to a failed two-point conversion attempt later in the third quarter. Another poor long snap sailed over punter/placekicker Saul Villela’s head and through the back of the end zone with 5:20 remaining in the second quarter. That miscue gave Kennesaw Mountain a 16-13 lead. “If we eliminate a few of our mistakes, we’re going to be difficult to stop,” Colonels’ head coach Steve Gates said after the game. “We’ve got a few things to clean up — especially the missed tackles — and we’ve got to execute a little better, but I think we discovered we can play with just about anybody. We’re going to be okay. We will regroup and get back to work.” Will Buttram led all Colonel tacklers with seven. Devin Henderson was credited with five stops. Kevin Henderson had four tackles and an interception. Chris Wood finished with four tackles and Todd Gaddy picked off a pair of Mustang passes. Kennesaw Mountain (1-0) hosts Campbell next Friday. CARTERSVILLE 15, DALTON 5 The Lady Canes went to the seventh inning Thursday night at Dalton tied 5-5 but blew the game wide open by scoring ten times in the top of the final frame. Dalton held leads of 4-1 through three innings and 5-3 going to the sixth. Cartersville tied the score with a pair of runs in the sixth before their scoring surge in the seventh inning. Jordan Bishop reached base in all five plate appearances for the Canes. The Cartersville catcher singled, homered, and walked three times.
