The Cartersville Little League Sandlot (9-year-old) tournament team came up short Monday night in the semifinals of the Northwest Georgia Sandlot Sectionals, falling to Smyrna Little League Red 11-9. The tournament was hosted by Cartersville Little League with Smyrna Red facing Smyrna Blue in the tournament finals. Sawyer Ezell paced the Cartersville offense Monday with two hits. Maddox Henderson and Harris Pressley both had triples. Hayden Stewart, Hayes Burris, Jordan Cooley, and Harry Baker added one hit each for the locals. Cartersville product Mason Barnett came through with a clutch pitching start Sunday against UCLA to help lift the Auburn Tigers to an NCAA Regional title. The right hand pitcher worked 5-1/3 shutout innings to earn the victory. The victory clinched a spot in the Super Regionals this weekend. COLLEGE BASEBALL MASON BARNETT — Auburn University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … started on the mound for the Tigers in their regional final Sunday night and held a 9-0 lead over UCLA through 5-1/3 innings before the game was halted at 10:42 p.m. due to weather concerns. The game resumed Monday with senior lefty Carson Skipper taking over the pitching duties. The Tigers held on to win 11-4 and advanced to this weekend’s Super Regionals. Barnett (3-2) struck out 10 of the 20 batters he faced Sunday and allowed only one hit — a leadoff double in the first inning — while keeping the Bruins off the scoreboard. Howard surrendered three earned runs on two walks and a hit. Toledo (25-27) is currently in seventh place in the Triple-A International League’s West Division. After hitting for a .237 average in 25 games and 76 official at bats this season in the Florida State League, the 22-year-old switch hitter is currently hitting .351 in 11 games and 37 official at bats with the High Class A Renegades. He also has two homers, a dozen walks, and eight RBIs since his return to Hudson Valley. The Renegades (24-26) are currently third in the South Atlantic League’s North Division. PRO BASKETBALL A.J. MOSBY — Albany Patroons (5th yr. pro; The Basketball League; Alcorn State; Cartersville HS) … After winning the regular season division title with a 20-3 record, Mosby and the Patroons will open the playoffs Tuesday in Game One of the Northeast Division finals at the Atlantic City Gambits. The Patroons will host Friday night and Saturday if needed. Atlantic City swept Syracuse in a first round best-of-three series. The Patroons were 3-0 against the Gambits during the regular season. Mosby appeared in 16 games for the Patroons during the regular season averaging 19.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game.

The host Cartersville Little League Sandlot (9-year-old) tournament team split games this weekend and has reached the semi-finals of the Northwest Georgia Sectional Tournament. The southpaw faced four batters in the top of the ninth Thursday allowing a hit and two walks. He struck out one in a 9-4 win. Saturday, Howard retired the first two outs of the seventh inning in an eventual 5-0 loss. He again faced four batters surrendered one hit and one walk. COLLEGE BASEBALL DAVIS WILLIAMS — Birmingham-Southern College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … appeared in both games of the Panthers’ NCAA Division III Super Regional last Friday and Saturday in Birmingham as BSC was swept by Trinity (Texas). The reliever faced five batters and gave up one, unearned run on one hit in a 9-8 loss Friday. He was then tagged with the pitcing loss Saturday in a 14-8 defeat. He entered in the eighth inning with the game tied 8-8 and was touched for a run on two hits. He later surrendered two more runs in the ninth on a hit batsman, a walk, and three hits before being lifted. Williams (5-2) made 24 relief appearances this season with a 3.94 ERA and 7 saves. He fanned 35 in 48 innings pitched. Birmingham-Southern finished the season 41-10. PRO BASKETBALL AJ MOSBY — Albany Patroons (4th-yr. pro; The Basketball League, Cartersville HS) … was one of eight Patroons to score in double figures last Friday in a 171-106 win over the Connecticut Cobras. Mosby scored 19 points with six rebounds and six assists. Albany completed the regular season with a 20-3 record and earned a first round bye in the TBL playoffs. GOLF BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (Fr., Cartersville HS) … Georgia made the final 15-team cut and tied for 12th at the NCAA Men’s Division I Golf Championship at the 7,289-yard, par-70 Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Bulldogs failed, however, to reach the final eight teams of match play — missing that cut by 18 shots. Brumlow shot rounds of 76 and 81 in the first 36 holes of the championship, but was scratched from the five-man starting lineup for the final 36 holes of stroke play. Brumlow played 30 competitive rounds for UGA in 2021-22 with his score counting in 22 of those rounds. His scoring average was 72.93 with 14 rounds at par or better with a low round of 66.

With the conclusion of the Georgia High School Association’s state baseball playoffs this week, the Georgia Athletic Directors’ Association has released the final standings for the 2021-22 GADA Directors’ Cup. The Directors’ Cup is awarded to the schools in each classification earning the most state playoffs points excelling and showing superior performance in 26 GHSA sports. Each school’s top eight scoring points in each gender are counted toward the award. The GADA Directors’ Cup complete scoring structure is available HERE. Cartersville, who won back-to-back Class 2A Directors' Cup titles 2000-01 and 2001-02, earned points in eight boys sports and six girls sports in 2021-22. With the Canes' boys programs actually reaching the state playoffs in nine sports, only the top eight points in that gender counted. The Purple Hurricanes received 90 points for their state runner-up finish in baseball and 85 in boys golf. Competition cheerleading followed with 80 points. Wrestling collected 66 points, boys cross country scored 54, while volleyball, football, and boys soccer added 53 points each. Girls cross country earned 38, boys track and field 34, with girls soccer, girls tennis, boys tennis, and boys basketball adding 25 points apiece. Girls track and field was credited with one point. Woodland scored Directors’ Cup points in five girls sports and four for boys. The Wildcats earned 90 points in wrestling for a state runner-up finish, 83 in fast pitch softball, 75 in girls cross country, 63 for boys cross country, and 48 for coed competition cheerleading. Woodland baseball, girls soccer, and volleyball earned 25 points each while boys track and field received 24 points. Cass had four girls sports and three boys teams to earn Directors’ Cup points. The Colonels’ wrestling team won state for 100 points while competition cheerleading earned 60 points. Football, boys soccer, girls basketball, girls tennis, and fast pitch softball each received 25 points. Adairsville earned points in five boys sports and three girls sports in 2021-22. The Tigers collected 83 points in wrestling, 69 in competition cheerleading, and 54 points in boys swimming. The Loganville Red Devils won their sixth state championship since 2008 and have now won four of the last five Class 5A state titles after defeating Cartersville 9-0 Tuesday night at AdventHealth Stadium in Rome. Tuesday’s winner-take-all state championship game was forced last Saturday when the Hurricanes defeated Loganville 1-0 after losing the first game in the best-of-three series 5-4. Loganville pitchers Matthew Heard (6 IP, 0R, 1H, 3BB, 5K) and Trenton Burnett (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 1K) combined on a one-hitter to shutout the Canes for only the third time this season. Meanwhile, the Red Devils’ offense scored twice in the second inning and four times in the third before adding on a single run in the fourth inning and two more in the seventh. Loganville finished the night with nine hits. Jackson Chizek had three hits and Sherman Johnson followed with two including one triple. Gage Fullerton, who was one of four Red Devils with one hit each, accounted for four Loganville RBIs. The Hurricanes utilized a quartet of pitchers including Colt McKibben (1 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB), Phillip Schiltz (5 IP, 5ER, 6H, 2BB, 1K), Geoffrey Gore (0.2 IP, 2ER, 1H, 2BB), and Collin Eaton (0.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K). ATHLETES BEYOND BARTOW PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (9th-yr. pro; Triple-A Detroit Tigers affiliate; Georgia Southern University; Cartersville HS) … worked a scoreless seventh inning last Saturday in the Mud Hens 12-2 win over Indianapolis. The southpaw allowed one hit and struck out two. Last Thursday he struck out the only batter faced in the second inning of an eventual 8-4 loss to the Indians. Toledo (21-19) plays a six-game series at home this week — Tuesday through Sunday — against the International League West Division leading Nashville Sounds. CONNOR JUSTUS — Charleston (WV) Dirty Birds (7th-yr. pro; Triple-A Atlantic League; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS) … in games last Tuesday through Thursday at the Kentucky Wild Health Genomes, the shortstop was 5-for-13 with one walk, one RBI, and two runs scored. He was also 0-for-5 in Sunday’s game at the Gastonia Honey Hunters. The Dirty Birds (13-15) were 2-4 last week and are currently in third place in the Atlantic League’s South Division. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Tampa Tarpons (5th-yr. pro; Class A New York Yankees affiliate; Cartersville HS) … made his return to Hudson Valley, where he spent his entire 2021 campaign, after being promoted from the Low-A Tampa Tarpons to the Yankees' High-A affiliate. Prior to being called up, he appeared in two home games against the St. Lucie Mets, finishing hitless with three walks and a run scored in six at-bats. He concluded the week with a pair of road games at the Brooklyn Cyclones. In the first game, Seigler went 3-for-3, with a double, a hit by pitch, two runs scored and two runs driven in. The 22-year-old followed that up by going 1-for-1 at the plate, with two walks and two runs scored. COLLEGE BASEBALL MASON BARNETT — Auburn University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … was saddled with the pitching loss last Friday in a 5-1 loss and 3-1/3 inning start at Kentucky. The right-hander, now 2-2 on the season, surrendered four earned runs on five hits and two walks. Barnett struck out five. The Tigers (37-18, 16-13 SEC), seeded fifth in the SEC Championship Tournament, will face Kentucky Tuesday in an elimination play-in game. The winner moves into the double-elimination portion of the tournament on Wednesday. STEVEN SPELL — Young Harris College (Jr., Cass HS) … in the Mountain Lions’ three games at the NCAA D-II Southeast Regional No. 2, Spell was 0-for-7 with three walks and one run scored as YHC beat Belmont Abbey but was eliminated by two losses to Wingate. Spell started all 51 games this season and finished with a .310 batting average. He had nine doubles, three home runs, and 31 RBIs. DAVIS WILLIAMS — Birmingham-Southern College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … faced the minimum and closed out the ninth inning of the Panthers’ 10-2 Lynchburg Regional title win over Salve Regina. BSC also beat Earlham College and 11th-ranked Lynchburg University to win the tournament. The 3rd-ranked Panthers (41-8) advance to the NCAA D-III Super Regionals where they will play a best-of-three series at No. 12 Trinity University (Texas).

After narrowly dropping Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader in the GHSA Class 5A State Championship series to Loganville, Cartersville scored a first inning run on an infield error in Game 2 and right hand pitcher Caden Carroll made it stand up in a 1-0 win. The doubleheader split means the rubber game of the best-of-three series will be played Monday night back at AdventHealth Stadium in Rome. Carroll, who stayed undefeated on the mound this season, tossed a gem in a spot the Hurricanes certainly needed it. He scattered four hits and did not walk a batter in earning his 12th win of the year. He needed only 87 pitches and struck out nine in his complete-game shutout. Curt Bonner opened the Canes’ first inning with a base hit and was replaced on the bag at first when Elliott Eastin bounced into a fielder’s choice. Caleb Daniel followed with a single that moved Eastin into scoring position at second base. Drew Rothschild then hit a hard ground ball that was misplayed by the Red Devils’ third baseman allowing Eastin to cross the plate. Loganville advanced a baserunner to third with two outs in the top of the sixth for their greatest threat, but Carroll got out of the frame with a comeback groundout he fielded himself. All five of Cartersville’s hits in Game 2 came from the top three batters in the Hurricane order. Eastin and Daniel had two singles each. Bonner had one. GAME ONE: LOGANVILLE 5, CARTERSVILLE Cartersville trailed 4-0 heading into the sixth inning of the series opener before challenging the Red Devils late. The Canes rallied for four runs in the sixth to tie the score 4-4 off starter Dawson Coe (5 IP, 4ER, 5H, 3BB, 4K). Matthew Heard (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 2K) picked up the Loganville pitching win by retiring the final six outs. He shut down the Canes’ sixth following a sac bunt with a pair of strikeouts. Bonner and Eastin coaxed back-to-back walks to open the Purple Hurricanes’ sixth inning. Daniel singled to load the bases before Rothschild doubled into left field. Daniel scored all the way from first when the Loganville left fielder made an error and Rothschild ended up at third base. Three pitches later, Hank Smith reached on an infield single sending Rothschild to the plate for a 4-4 tie. Loganville scored what would be their game-winning run in the bottom of that same sixth inning. Sherman Johnson singled, Christian Donaldson doubled with one out, and Johnson scored when Jaylen Jones groundout out. Cartersville starting pitcher Ryan Johnson (5 IP, 5R, 4ER, 8H, 1BB, 4K) suffered the Game 1 pitching loss. Phillip Schiltz (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1K) retired the final three outs for the Hurricanes. Daniel finished with two hits in the opening game. Rothschild (double, 2 RBIs), Smith (RBI), and Blake Sutton added one hit apiece. Cartersville (32-7) and Loganville (31-9) will play a winner-take-all game Monday night with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
