Woodland surges past Cartersville; Adairsville, Cass earn region wins


A late inning rally lifted Woodland to a Region 7-5A win Tuesday night over Cartersville while Adairsville split its region doubleheader with Bremen and Cass held on to defeat Hiram.


 

Late inning surge lifts Woodland past Cartersville

The Woodland Lady Cats scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning at Cartersville Tuesday night for a come-from-behind 12-11 Region 7-5A win over the Lady Canes.


The go-ahead hit in the seventh inning for Woodland was a three-run double off the bat of shortstop Cambrie Carrington. She finished with two hits and six RBIs.


All of Woodland’s runs came in just two frames. The Wildcats trailed 4-0 when they scored seven times in the top of the third inning. They then fell behind 11-7 before posting the five-spot in the seventh.


Jordan Hammonds (2 RBIs), Karmen Zeferino (RBI), Elizabeth Hartsfield (double, RBI), Alana Carnes (RBI), Bailey Sakacsi, Kamryn Smith, and Haley Collum added one hit each for the Lady Cats.


Peyton Dorn (2.2 IP, 2R, 1ER, 1H, 3BB, 1K) snagged the pitching win in relief by closing out the final eight outs in the circle. Collum (4 IP, 6R, 5ER, 6H, 2BB, 5K) started for Woodland. Ashlyn Baines (0.1 IP, 3R, 1ER, 0H, 3BB) also pitched.


Kiley Arnold (4.2 IP, 5R, 1ER, 3H, 6BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for Cartersville in relief. Ava Perkins (2.1 IP, 5ER, 3H, 5BB, 1K) started in the circle for the Hurricanes with McKinley Chada (0.0 IP, 2ER, 1H, 1BB) also pitching in middle relief.


Cartersville catcher Jordan Bishop had two hits including a home run and three RBIs to pace the Canes’ offense. Mikey Lewis also had two hits including one double with one RBI.


Elizabeth Nelson (RBI), Arnold, Perkins (2 RBIs), Chada (RBI), Reese Dumas, and Erin McCrary (double, RBI) contributed one hit each for Cartersville.


Cartersville (3-5-1, 2-1) hosts Cass in another Region 7-5A game Thursday at 5:55 p.m.


Woodland (5-5, 2-1) travels to Dalton Thursday for a 5:55 p.m. region matchup.


Lady Colonels hold on to edge Hornets

Cass softball built a 7-0 lead in the first two innings at home Tuesday night against Hiram and then held off the Hornets for a 7-6 Region 7-5A win at the Cass High Athletic Complex.


Alexis Woods had two hits at the plate and picked up the pitching victory for the Lady Colonels with 5-2/3 innings of work in the circle. She allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and four walks while fanning four.


Hiram (3-3, 0-3) threatened down the stretch with three runs in the fourth inning and four more in the sixth. A pair of Cass infield errors in the top of the seventh put the potential go-ahead runs on base for the Hornets before Colonels’ reliever Emma Gibson slammed the door with two groundouts and a fly out.


Gibson, who produced one hit on offense, earned a save by closing out the final four outs in the circle. She did not yield a run and gave up just one base hit.


Braelyn Franklin also had two hits for Cass including one RBI. Reese Howard finished with one hit and two RBIs. Ansley Hight drove in a run with a double and Haylee Dishmon contributed one hit and one RBI.


Cass (5-3, 2-1) plays at Cartersville Thursday at 5:55 p.m. and will have two games Saturday at North Paulding in the Allatoona Buc Bash.


Tigers split region opening doubleheader


Brie Patterson had three hits including a home run and three RBIs Tuesday night as the Lady Tigers split a Region 6-AAA doubleheader with visiting Bremen.

The Lady Tigers scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning Tuesday evening, then held off visiting Bremen down the stretch for an 11-8 Region 6-AAA win in the first of two games.

Bremen threatened late with eight runs across the final four innings, but Adairsville reliever Jordan Clay (1 IP, 2R, 1ER, 3H) was able to close out the final frame to secure the Tigers’ win.


Jenna Young had three hits including two RBIs to help lead the Adairsville offense. Brie Patterson followed with two hits including a home run and two RBIs. Taylor Evans also had two hits — both doubles with one RBI.


Megan Gregory (4.1 IP, 4ER, 4H, 4BB, 9K), who was the starting and winning pitcher for Adairsville, homered with two RBIs. Annalee Morris (2 RBIs), McKenzie Pullum, and Kelsey Gleason added one hit each for the Lady Tigers.


Chelsea Bates (1.2 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H, 2K) pitched in the fifth and sixth innings in middle relief.


In Game 2, Bremen turned the tables to win 11-1 in six innings.

The Blue Devils posted five runs in the third inning, two in the fifth, and added four insurance runs in the top of the sixth for their 11-run total.


The lone Adairsville run crossed in the fifth inning.


Halle Chason had two hits for Adairsville including one double in the loss.


Patterson (RBI), Young, Gregory (double), Pullum, and Morris added one hit each for the Lady Tigers.


Clay (3.1 IP, 5R, 1ER, 2H, 3BB, 1K) made the Game 2 start in the circle for Adairsville and was tagged with the pitching loss. Gregory (2 IP, 3R, 2ER, 2H, 2BB, 2K) and Bates (0.2 IP, 3R, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) also pitched for the Tigers.


Adairsville (5-4-1, 1-1) hosts Ringgold Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
